Cold Steel Outdoorsman: A Tanto Suitable for the Field?

- Giving this one a proper Mike's Medium-Large Martial Knife Exploration Journey treatment, since my first attempt way back when wasn't very good. Hopefully I've gotten better at this, and it gave me the opportunity to test this knife against some others in my impact and durability gauntlet.
Well you may indeed be slightly mad but no more than the rest of us .Thank you for your time and effort ,you have and continue to give me a great education on the blades you have featured and have given me a lot to think about when adding a new blade to my collection .This was yet another blade I have been wondering about over the years and your opinion on it as a whole will be why I get one and try it out for myself . Your confident no nonsense but friendly presentation style makes you a pleasure to listen too and learn from so I hope you keep it up for a long time or at least as long as you enjoy making these programmes .

LOL Michael, the Outdoorsman is gorgeous, no doubts at all; those sheaths are another matter. I used my CS Tuff Lite to add some gimping to a few sheaths, mostly Kydex but some must have been secure ex as the knife would not even cut cheese after that; whoops. I was shocked at first at just how dull the Tuff Lite had become, then I remembered the CS Dull-O-Matic edge killers they include free with some knives. It's okay though, the new owners of CS seem determined to ruin what remains of Lynn's legacy. I just picked up a long handled warrior wakizashi, the box had a GSM LLC label as the sender/seller, and it was basically a poorly finished parts kit shipped with less than needed packing as the tsuba was protruding from the shipping carton and showed that it had been doing so all the way from Texas. The assembled sword would not even begin to enter the saya, the habaki was not fitting inside and everything imaginable was loose. I also saw that I was not alone with this level of quality by reading the feedback. Well, been at this long enough to know how to fix things, and took the roughness and a couple of visible rolls off of the edge. Why did I not call CS CS? No point in doing that, looking at the feedback, I saw that nothing had changed since the last time I needed help from Cold Steel, so was not interested in dealing with their Customer Disservice department yet again. Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of Cold Steel, but have learned that as far as warranty or adjustments are concerned, I am on my own since the move to Texas. I am starting to wonder though, is CS farming out some production to Bud-K?
Great video Mike, thank you for bringing the matter of those Cold Steel sheaths dulling their blades. That's been a deal breaker for me for a while now. I like that knife but, if I do get one, it'll have a proper Kydex sheath to go with it!

A few weeks ago I received my Joker Nomad. I like bushcraft knives and tactical ones. The nomad surprised me very much: not only is it a very good bushcraft beast, it surprisingly feels light and it balances like a real fighting knife.
Perhaps a interview about the Spanish Joker Nomad?

This is long but I had to explain since I'm a Cold Steel follower.
Sorry to say, I couldn't afford the real thing. I ordered a knock-off from WISH for around $40. What I got was surprising. It wasn't the 6" blade of Cold Steel but a 7-1/2" blade of solid VG-1 steel (says Sai Mai, but there is no line showing). This blade also has the stamp "made in Japan" on it, clearly a lie. It is not hollow ground but saber ground more like the cheap 4116 version that I adore. The bevels are perfect and the blade laser straight. It didn't come with the bad plastic sheath, but a real leather sheath identical to the tanto style from CS ages ago. However, I'm not fond of the way it attaches to a belt. After I resharpened it, the blade slices everything (including my hand when I slipped putting only a tiny bit of pressure on it). I hacked, cut, sliced, and even did the dropping tomato cut with it. (I don't baton knives. That's what a tomahawk or hatchet is for.) It didn't let me down once. I purchased another from the same person and got the same knife again. I wasn't after the CS logo but the style of blade and cheapness. I can buy three to the CS one. If it breaks doing something not supposed to be done, I have another.
I had seen and held one of the true CS versions, but the blade didn't have good bevels or even a good line for the Sai Mai. I hate to say it, but it felt cheap even with a good fit of the hardware to the blade and it was made in 2023. CS quality has gone down a lot.

I have a Turkish blade I got from my mother in law. Wood handle with wolf head at the end. Large clip point, high scandi grind. That blade is remarkable in many ways. Mostly it’s cutting ability and the damage the clip point does to a lot of things. It is a partial full width tang like many of my Japanese blades.
I will recomend you, the Fox Ryu. It has a scaloped micarta grip and a tanto blade and a pointy "pommel" great grip,no hollow grind. Designed by a Japanese knife designer. And it comes with a KYDEX sheat😄👌🏻 it's a great knife that works for everything,martial included,very included. And it has the Niolox tool steel at 59-61HRC. I really love that steel. It comes in all black and in green micarta and acid treated blade i think it is,looks great,even better in hand. But i also want this knife. Sat too much on the toilet as a kid and looked at cold steel knives catalogs. And as a hunter and outdoors man it would really fit my needs. And i allways thinks about knives and other things weaponwise. I have the master hunter in SanMai,it would also be great at selfdefence. But i have all the old models tanto SanMai steel knives. From the master tanto,who is very simular too this one. The magnum tanto ll, 7.5 inch blade, great knife and they have a hand guard. The magnum tanto IX 9 inch,ohh that is a nice one. And the magnum yanto XII 12 inch blade. It is not far a way from being a wakizashi sword. It is faster than most bowies and espesially in that lenght. Love it alot. And not a tanto,but i have the black bear classic, what a dangerous beauty it it. BUT i HATE the SHEATS. they are crap. And is glass filled nylon. Who in they're right mind puts glass in a sheat!!!

I got the Lite version for use outdoors but also as a knife to use while around water, fishing, canoeing and things like that. Love it's sheath for the Lite version, much more like a Mora sheath.
Their Lite knives are surprisingly good slicers. I really like them for food prep and general utility. I may get around to reviewing a few.
OUTDOORSMAN is another alternative to RECON TANTO or MASTER TANTO for me, but it is equipped with a common blade shape.
Some of cold steel knives are seconds all my cold steel that I buy are are straight razors only one was the recon tanto I have to use 800-1000 grit now it's a Laser good video when I receive a second I tend to use them for kitchen use or utility wise.
Please review the Prather War Bowie. You are gonna love it. Great fighting knife and philosophy behind the knife.
It's a very good looking blade design, and I was wanting one , it's questionable now although I still like it a lot,
but I will not be using any

Agreed. It just doesn't perform as well at bushcraft compared to a more dedicated knife design.

As much as I love Cold Steel, every fixed blade I have owned of theirs always dulls the edge because of the secure sheath and I ain’t shelling out $250-$400 for a leather sheath. 👺
many of the older made in Japan san maiIII knives came with quality leather sheaths, my original Outdoorsman did and I know many others did as well.
@@waveman0 I wonder if it’s worth it to call Cold Steel/GSM and just claim I have one of those older knives and need a new sheath 🤣.

Sharpen your knife with only a stone and never use a super fine stone or other to get a super fine polished edge, yes it will shave hair and slice paper but it will dull quickly in a kydex plastic sheath. Use only a double edged carborundum stone and you will achieve a field sharpness knife that stays sharper for longer.
my original made in-Japan Outdoorsman san maiIII (VG1 san mai) came with a quality leather sheath, which I am so glad of, for the money you pay these knives should come with a leather sheath.
I absolutely HATE securex sheaths! They all dull the blade. Other kydex riggs are no problem. Don't get it.
A friend of mine said it’s because they are glass material lined which sadly dulls the blade.
I will not be using them anymore & that's for sure. 👍
