🇬🇷 How I Retired at 48. My 10 Tips, Our Journey to Financial Independence.
I retired with my wife at 48 years old. This is how we did it, and what we learnt. Our 10 Tips for Retiring Early, from people who have actually done it! We now live in Greece and out time is our own,
There is no magic formula or get rich quick scheme. I am not a financial guru, and you should definitely seek qualified independent financial advice and not rely on mine and our experiences, but we have actually retired successfully, so perhaps or experiences on the journey to financial independence are of value.
The idea is simple, save money, invest in pensions and other assets, to deliver a secure independent financial income at an age before retirement, but how did we do that? In simplistic terms - saving, investing, working hard, maximising our potential and having a dream.
The core principles of our retirement plan can be broken down as follows:
1. Invest in a Pension ASAP!
2. The HOW - Investment Planning, Returns, Drawdown, Inflation.
3. Skills, Maximise your Income.
4. Minimise outgoings, tax, leverage debt.
5. Minimise risks, seek good Independent Financial Advice.
6. Diversify, Asset Type and globally!
7. Trap Door, a Safety Net.
This is our story to retiring at 48 years old.

I retired with $600k saved, and looking back, I realize I could’ve done things differently. Not saving enough, plus the impact of inflation and sequence of returns risk, makes me worry about outliving my savings, and it’s not something I can easily ignore. Not saying it’s the only way to go, but it’s something I think about

I'm approaching retirement and having a financial advisor has been helpful. I started investing later than most, so relying on compound interest from index funds or bonds alone wasn’t enough for me. Despite that, I’ve managed to do well and am on track to retire with around $5 million

    • @JacobsErick-u8r
      @JacobsErick-u8r 8 годин тому

Yeah, always good to plan for retirement when young. We all think we don’t have to worry about it until later but the fact is, the earlier you learn about financial literacy the better you can plan for it. With amount of savings, you could probably try different side projects to generate some extra income to stash more cash.

Congratulations! Saving and investing $5m by retirement is my financial goal. Since I started young, I have a lot more options to get there. Financial advisor might be something I will look at later in life but mainly to figure out how to pay my fair share of taxes without overpaying. The tax code is written for business owners, the more savvy you are, the more you can save. That’s the part that is more complex to me. Maybe even need an estate lawyer if you are in the millions range already to ensure I am building and passing generational wealth.

In short.... start speculating with any cash at your disposal, just before the central banks and monetary authorities of the western world decide to massively increase the money supply. In the uk 1997 the uk money supply wasn't even 800billion pounds. These days it's over 3 trillion and then some. How is the money supply increased ?by a massive increase in private lending mainly by the mortgage banks.....aided and abbeted these last 14 awful years by the bank of england which has rigged interest rates rock bottom. That's it folks. That's all you need do. Invent a time machine ....and speculate ....invest with as much debt as possible knowing that thru the next 30 yrs governments of the world will loosen the money taps soooooo much that will be so much money poured into shares and property....that you can't lose. Honest question.... Will zero percent rates ever return ? Are rocketing home prices of 10pc plus a year ever likely to return ? Will folks be able to do what they did in the late 90s and 2000s and borrow as much money as they like to load up with mortgage debt simply by lying about their income....like what happened even upto 2012 when the liar mortgage loans were finally abolished ? Hope Greece works out for you , but honestly can't help back think that anyone could have got rich over the last years since 97. Quantitive easing and zero per cent interest rate policies were designed to massively increase asset prices.... And make anyone that bought assets rich. But these days interest rates are no longer 0.5pc and Quantitive easing ended in 2022.

not really no, 10% flat rate for retirees. Yes everyone as a personal tax number, but that is also common across Europe, a UTR Number. they are talking about combining it with the ID number. 1 for all

Great tips. You reminded me of my mindset and journey. I agree with you that from an early age, you need that desire and a plan and see it through for say 30yrs. You also need self-discipline. I retired at 53 2 yrs ago. i never really saw the point of work it was just a vehicle for me to gain freedom asap. I live off passive income from dividend paying blue chips. I was lucky to understand the importance of isas and peps in the early days and have built up a tax-free income from close to a seven figure portfolio al the best 👌

The changed the rules in April so if you have residency, and pay taxes in Greece you are entitled to an AMKA, you may not get much for it, but is important to have, I got a free flu jab with it for example, but little else, but admin wise, having an AMKA is important.

I was absolutely clueless about what a Pension was. All I remembered was some vague memory from my childhood about a Maxwell guy and a pension scam so it stuck with me until I was almost 50 and I never considered them. I ended up opting out from my work pension when the auto enrolment came along. Now I understand them I recall my employer was offering to contribute 9%. As a result I don’t have a pension apart from the state one which I’ll get when I reach that age.

Better yet, learn it yourself. Investing is far less complicated than it seems, but he is correct. Find and advisor if you have substantial assets, find an advisor and hear out their advise. That is not to say take it, but hear them out. ALMOST all of them are too conservative and have the goal of never LOSING any money. That is recipe one for never making any real money. You can and SHOULD take charge of your own finances. It is FAR less difficult than it seems. We no longer live in the age of libraries and the Encyclopedia Britannica. The WHOLE WORLD of information is free to you. Go find it! You literally could have put 100% of you funds into the SPY ETF and made 25.18% on your money without paying a fee to an "ADVISOR". Okay, minus the fee for the ETF, which is 0.09%. Listen to him. You can do this. Take charge now.

Have a written plan, stick to it, and get a little lucky once in a while 🙂. Re. Financial advice. Don’t ever think that big reputable financial advisers will act in your interest. There is no replacement for self education and hard decisions. I was at the point where I wanted to invest a decent sum and contacted a number of reputable companies. Some big names. Half of them was trying to sell me products that were not suitable for me at outrageous commission. The other half just regurgitated the usual nonsense that gets you nowhere. London/UK is particularly bad.

I’m about to stop working in my mid-50’s. I have never been identified with any of my jobs, but didn’t have a plan to stop until I was 39, when i had a massive, traumatic life-changing experience. That put everything into focus and I made getting out of work early my #1 focus from then forward. I’m about to retire comfortably very soon, young enough to live the rest of my life on my own terms. I will say, people don’t need as much money as they think. I have over saved, really. I do value experiences and when i do buy things, i buy high quality. But i am not a consumer. If you’re the kind of person who equates a good life with a luxury life, you can’t do what i did.

Great video Andrew👍🏻 My husband and I live in OZ, we have been contributing to our pension (they call it Superannuation here) for past 10+ years but we are now wanting to step it up a gear so we can have a choice in years to come on WHEN we wish to retire. Right now we enjoy our work and I feel we are in our high earning years so we are going to make the most of it by avoiding that lifestyle creep and investing a good chunk😊 Happy 2025 from OZ🇦🇺🦘🐨

48 is frankly ridiculously early to retire. I am approaching 58 and considering paying off the mortgage and entering retirement in 2025 with a £900k SIPP portfolio after saving hard for 30 years as an IT consultant and living beneath my means. This will enable me to live modestly but decently. At 48 I still had a big mortgage to pay!! You seem like some kid of City whizz kid, a trader of some kind. In that position you could certainly have retired very early indeed, but it's not an option for 99% of the public.

I was in manufacturing- 1 grown up kid and the wife and I wanted to have options, that was it. Do stuff while we are healthy enough to, focus can be powerful when it comes to paying down mortgages etc.

Basically these guys have no kids so it’s not that impressive when you consider having a single child costs you around £200k during their life till 18 and they most likely wont be financially independent at that point anyway. 2 kids £400k and so on. Those are very conservative estimates. Pretty much anyone without kids can do early retirement as they should be able to save a ton of money over a 25 year career especially if married and both working

I decided to retire at 55 on a very modest income that most people would consider not enough. I had to do it because I couldn't stand the alternative. That was 5 years ago and everything's OK. I get my state pension at 67. I could have done with planning ahead when I was younger but I didnt and that's that. Well done for getting it right.

Once that comes through, my American husband and I plan to move to Greece for early retirement. We are strongly considering Kalamata at the moment. I would really go for kalamata, you need to research and drive around but there are some lovely areas in kalamata and it has a great vibe and all year around life, which is not guaranteed in Greece, the airport is close, and Athens is only 2 hours or so on a great road. Good luck with it!

Retiring to Greece is a cunning plan - no heating costs in winter. For those of us who haven't had a high flying corporate career, I'd recommend buying at least a hectare of land, plant an orchard and start a market garden, then you can at least be self sufficient in food, sell your surplus for extra income, plus it will keep you fit.
