Farmall Serial Numbers Explained - What They Mean & What Year is My Tractor
I have been wanting a fast hitch for my m for years, I just haven't found one close to me for cheap, nice job!
Thanks it’s a very good setup now we just need to make it look a little better
Pretty neat but serial number 5 off the line sold an hour from here for 3500$ is all
Unfortunately it’s still just a farmall M to most people So it was tractor fbk506?
@@DrRust I’m wrong I looked up the auction history, just shy of 6500$ and 505 serial number
Thanks for checking that for me I’ll add it to my list that’s the lowest number I’ve seen yet I heard a rumor that 501 is still around
Thank you I have an M 147310 XJ I know it a 1947 Don't know XJ stands for It's a gas engine the XJ is clear as a bell Take care
I have sn 7897 but it has been assembled from several different tractors I belive the motor is out of a 45 or 47 the o and q look real similar and the front bolster is the later casting
Interesting at least I can add it to the list I’m making
About 12 years ago I found an m&w 9 speed for it now looking for a m&w live hydraulic pump
I have a super H would like add power steering how did you hook up to the main hydraulic pump?
You need a priority valve to split the flow to the torque motor
Have one located in WI. Is there a way to DM you more info?
Message me on Facebook I’m Dr. Rust on there
@@DrRust didnt seem to work. mine is the ser. num. 8371 I switched user accounts. my tractor literally has every difference you point out in your video including the spacer behind the light bar. I was told the manifold was different with the distillate and needed to be changed when switching to gas only. But you would know more about that than I would
You don’t have to change it but it would make more power with a gas manifold
Thanks for this. I have been playing whackamole on my tractor that was running fine but shut off while I was brush hogging. Replacing the ignition got it running twice. I did that because the headlights not working made me think it must be the ignition. Then I replace the igniton again which worked twice again. Traced the power and found the aftermarket Ammeter (I assume installed when the prior owner switched from a generator to an alternator). Bypassing the ammeter got it to turn over again but its not starting. From your video I took the coil cable off the distributor and I am not seeing a spark. Took the coil out and I'm getting no ohm reading or continuity so I ordered a new coil. Hopefully tomorrow I can finally get the tractor going again.
I’m glad I could help hopefully that does it
What would you take for it
I don’t plan to sell it
In my opinion a 4 cylinder shouldn't have any bigger pipe than 3in to sound good, and the smaller ones, no bigger than 2½in.
You’re probably but right that’s how this one came to us
How does your brakes work on this one? I have one with the 3 bolt disk on it like yours. Mine are worn out , and the replacement disk are over $100⁰⁰ each. So that's over $400⁰⁰ to redo them.
This one only had a disc on the left side for some reason and I didn’t notice it until after I sold it lol but both worked well you couldn’t tell a difference other than the band needed adjusting on the right side
I had one of these. Didn't know it was rare. 5th gear was slow , that's why I got rid of it.
Interesting I don’t think I’ve heard of a slow 5th gear set
It has live hydraulic now.
No but it’s got a live power steering pump that looks like a live hydraulic pump
THANK-YOU! Excellent... saved me a lot of grief... I appreciate your information. BTW- My '41 M starter has only two bolts. I followed the same process...loosened both bolts enough to move the starter back 3/4-inch, shook it around, re installed the starter, and Voila'! Perfect. Now I can spread the manure.
I’m glad I could help
If you want to keep your tractor original then put in a second 6V battery and a starting relay. One battery to run the ignition system and the other for starting. Remember that the starting battery will drop down to around 4v especially when cold. The ignition battery stays at 6V and gives a good spark. A spark booster could also be added for starting. This is why 7V coils and starting resistors were fitted to 12V systems in cars.
A-PLUS!
We're is part 2

Excellent video Dr. RUST and nice see how long others do in !
Excellent video Dr. Rust :). also think get run not bad turns idle screw till engine has no back fire also choke on and if don't cure New Holland or Ford Tractor Dealership should have Carb plus gasket or brand new or rebuilt one's in stock ! Also think what happened to Transmission looks like someone forget push clutch pedal in then engage PTO to just tried PTO byself and high idle too ! My dad did that to his 1963 McCormick International B414 Loader tractor Desiel on PTO gear and lever part lucky got nice good condition 1963 McCormick International B414 Loader I found was in home area in 1994 tractor got engine rebuild and whole good condition tractor rebuilt it up too! Nice $1.000 bucks and had lots parts fix my dad tractor up with all good parts ! Lots tractor when scrap up and not worth fix back then ! Also good condition one save me buy all new parts some impossible get anymore to and nice find in Desiel not Gas engine ones !
Interesting break. They normally kind of split length wise.😮
I’m really thinking the pto shifter took it out
Throw away that Amazon/Ebay carb and get a original. They are known to be junk right out of the box. They always run too lean.
I wondered about that we actually have to go pick up a second one soon it has a original carburetor
You can get parts for those tractors easy
Show that Ford all your Cornpopper stuff. It'll come around quick! Blessings Coupling is probably broke!
The first tractor I ever drove! ❤ The sound!
That's cool except I wouldn't want that exhaust in my face
I’m not a big fan of the exhaust either
@@DrRust mine all have 4ft of pipe... stacks 😂 usually straight pipes
Looks cared for many years
I hate that when it gets in 2 gears at once. Then you have to screw around with it. The farmalls I own that don't do that. much have lower hours use, or something.
Excellent video Dr. RUST Vroom Vroom :) !
Coming up in the world, eh! I like turbo whistles myself. And the puff that goes with them when you gouge on it.
It actually belongs to a friend of mine but I definitely like it but they are just so expensive if I could find a good deal on one maybe
@@DrRust I was wonding since it was out of your character sort of to me anyway. We both like the old stuff just fine. Blessings
I really liked the power shift and I love how it sounds But the size and cost of repairs kills it for me I still love my M’s and my Molines
@@DrRust Anybody can run a new one. You got to have common sense and experience to run an old one and keep it going.
Excellent video Dr. RUST on John Deere A of 2 cylinders motor gas of Johnny Pop they nickname!
Can't beat that lope. Blessings
Absolutely
Awesome. Now that you have a low compression engine, any desire to start testing alternative fuels? Maybe 1/2 Gas, 1/4 Diesel, and 1/4 used oil?
It’s actually my buddies tractor but we have messed around with it a little on used oil a little we hope to put it in the field soon and try more alternative fuels If we do I’ll definitely film it
You can definitely run 50/50 if you run d21 plugs just not on a super heavy load and you have to keep it hot the hotter the better
I feel like the slow speed of that era of John Deere could take advantage of that slow burn of heavy oiled fuels. I’m sure if your M could be made to function on 3/4 motor oil, a two cylinder would likely be able to match that performance, and perhaps excel under those conditions.
Yes Deere definitely works well with a slow burning fuel on the 2 cylinders They sold tons of multi fuel tractors because of it
Got to start it on gas and get it hot then switch over to alternative fuel? Where is your 2nd fuel tank? I don’t see it.
That’s a Deere lover sound
Is that your tractor? How did you find it
It’s not mine I just saw it at a show If you google it there’s some good articles on it
@@DrRust it’s very rare to hear about prototype Farmal tractors some ended up at University of Madison, Wisconsin, agricultural department and some ended up at auction Minnesota Cokato or litchfield think or some somewhere near there auction yard. Thank you for showing that Tractor. I really enjoyed seeing it. Yes, I grew up on a farm.
All M's are just scrap iron.
Why do you say that?
The M was the worst mistake international ever made according to the engineers that developed it.
Where did you hear that?
From the engineers themselves.
Rubbish one of the best tractors ever built
Just keep a good balancer on it. Do some DIY oil cooler lines. Make sure the pump timing is a tad advanced. do a hx35 with 6.5 manifolds and such if you want to turbo it. Slap a decent lift pump on it. Intercooler not really necessary. Don’t put a 6.5 GM-x turbo on it. With that gearing you will be missing out on the highway and have too high drive pressure. The mechanical IP’s take a little crack of the throttle to pop right off. DS4 fires with no throttle. I wouldn’t do half the mods you mentioned. That thing will run forever if you just leave it alone. Even N/A it can be a lot of fun. Just advance the timing a hare and get her breathing free. Set of straight pipes and a cold air intake. They are most happy when not tampered with. I had an 82 k20 all original and it ran awesome. 3.73 gears. I lifted it, put a H1c/H1E hybrid turbo on it and cranked the fuel. It was fun but I appreciated it more as original. I also had a 82 c10, again, true survivor. Bone stock and it ran good with a J code intake and bump of the fuel screw. I couldn’t leave well enough alone and dropped a complete 92 mechanical 6.5 in it that I freshened all up internally. Man that thing had boat loads of torque. I had a gm3 turbo and it suffered on the highway. Now I have a 95 k2500 burban with optimizer, hx35 16cm non gated, and 4.10s. It pulls very well all the way to the top. It will hit 18psi but I never let it eat like that for long. I have a low mile 93 6.5 setup and running on a stand for if I ever need it. My 4l80 shifts early too in the 95. If I ever have ds4 issues I will put the mechanical stuff from the 93 on the 95 and sort out a standalone controller for the 4l80. Or full manual valve body would be fun. I have an absolute love affair with these old GM diesels. So under rated. Just can’t be scared to turn a wrench.
I agree with you my buddy actually gave me a Hx35 and I bought a slightly used set of Bosch marine injectors with those and a f code 6.5 intake it runs very good na
I've got 7567
That’s so cool where is it located? mine came from north of Indianapolis I always wondered if consecutive numbers went to the same area
Mine was found at Knightstown Ind. It's at Shelbyville Ind now where are you at. Mines got wide front
Mine was actually in Muncie so pretty close really now It’s west of Plainfield that’s so cool they probably rode the same train car from Chicago maybe even came from the same dealer 84 years ago only to be reconnected by the internet Is it a Ih factory wide front or a aftermarket?
IH.
Might have to get them back together someday
IH is a beast! 💯 😊😊 farmall baby!!!
Badass!
My grandfather had an M with a hand clutch. When I would tell others about it they said it was a TA. The hand clutch lever looked exactly like a TA handle on MTA. Only found out a few years ago it was a M&W add on. Grandfather sold that tractor on late sixties.
That’s cool I have a tractor with a shuttle transmission and the guy I got it from though it was a t/a
❤️💔
This video is amazing. Most incredible is knowing that Wisconsin site exists! Amazing for looking through for hours. Thanks for helping me understanding the S & J in my serial number and finding out my 300 was built in February. Cheers.
Thanks I put a lot of research into it and that site is definitely amazing I’ve spent lots of time on it
Just so you know, don't crank it like that. It can kickback on you. And bream your arm or wrist
What does the recess in the top plate mean
Just that it’s a early tractor I don’t know why they did it like that
There’s just nothing like the sound of an M!
Absolutely
Yes, They are/were a good tractor. If it was Green it would have a much, much higher Value even though the Green one is no better if even a match for the Supper M.
Check coolant
Yes I can’t believe I missed that part
That tractor sounds sweet
I think it’s going to be a really strong runner after a tuneup
@@DrRust gas burner?
@@DrRust dang it thought you were the Massey fergesun channel...they dont have much of a tractor if you ask me
Yes it’s gas I don’t know much about masseys
@@DrRust I have 2 m's and a 100,plan on going through them in the near future
My gas 1950 H has a shutter, which I always thought was normal until I just last month got a Super M and it had no shutter. I was going to look to install it until I got some manuals for it and I read what you're saying, that they aren't for gas engines. So now I'm surprised our H (we've had it since new) has the shutter.
Squatch253 said in one of his videos that the shutters were optional on the gas w4 I would bet that applies to Ms and Hs also or it’s possible they were installed by the dealer. Do you live in a colder climate?
@@DrRust Yeah up in New England, so that could be it.
Probably
❤no 403 diesel or g 4cyl diesel engine
They did try a 403d but it didn’t go well So they built the 425 diesel 6 cylinder in 1954 in the GTB D and only built like 850 of them then in 55 they switched to the GB D with the big fenders
Is that 613,000 miles or 61,300.0 miles I thought the orange was a decimal of a mile please let me know because I’m looking at a squarebody that the odometer says 250,000 or 25,000
All pre 88 square body’s are 5 digit plus a .1 so 99,999.9 is the max they can read So my truck showed 61k but I think that was the 3 time around because they roll over back to 00
