I remember the old 283's and maybe truck blocks (it's been a LONG time) and they were STRONG! 4-speed mains and a 2-speed rear. And the 366's and 427's. I put the old G.M. v-8's in the same box with the 'L' head Briggs engines. Hard to kill. Ypou'll get it, popping and all. God Bless!
The intake has to be a 78/79 vintage. Judging by the lack of disturbed grease I would say you probably have the worst sbc you can get. The heads and valve train in those era motors were horrid…….cheap castings, soft cams. They were just not the everlasting motors that their predecessors were, not bad, just had bugs. I hope for your sake that someone put a cam in it already way back in the 80’s. It will run, I hope that these hints aren’t you problem
I am glad that you got it running, but I loved listening to the starter when you were cranking it over. Great sound!
