Really enjoyed coming along on your road trip. Great vid. I so want to visit Portland and Seattle now! I think some of your images demonstrate the frustration I have with this camera. I love it, but the hit rate of getting successfully sharp and nicely exposed images is just too low for me so I found myself using the Instax printer more. Course it's not quite as fun but I'm longing for Fuji to produce a Sq camera with a decent lens, then I would use a lot more instax film.

Apart from a few weird design choices (no lighten/darken for close up and infinity mode) this is absolutely the best analog Square format camera Fuji has made. I don't understand why they always dumb down their follow up releases. Look at the latest Wide camera: it can do less than the Instax 100 from 25 years ago!

Of all film stock, Monochrome has to be my go-to. I've used Ferrania P33 twice (tho' not developed it) Most of my D & P uses Ilford film & chemicals - HP4, FP4, Ortho. The 160 ISO is very good. Cameras, I have Nikon bodies: FM, FA, F3 & F4(S); lenses: 24, 28, 35 - all F2's AI-S'; 85 F1.4 AI-S, 105 F2.5 AI - non built-in hood, & two 50mm's - F1.2 & 1.4, respectively. I concur that P33 is (also) on the pricier end of the market, but might I suggest Rollei Retro 400s from Analogue Wonderland; at £7.00 GBP (close on to $9.00 US) it's infinitely more affordable & seriously delivers; I enclose a link below if this piques your interest: analoguewonderland.co.uk/products/rollei-retro-400s-film-35mm-b-w-iso-400?variant=7491903356988&currency=GBP&tw_source=google&tw_adid=&tw_campaign=16528144236&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwnK60BhA9EiwAmpHZw5mnu5KUf6unLs1t8dg8FGMVp0ysLCDTfqX49vCICaci9LxuRsa83xoCMiAQAvD_BwE Wonderful presentation, thank you, Best, Andrew.

Cannot say I am a fan of this film stock - it's very washed out - little in the way of vibrancy or saturation, & for the fiscal outlay, unjustifiable; however, I did like your compositions. In regard to the 'locals', they do come across as rather parochial. Remember, you need no excuse to (re)visit the UK or Republic Of Ireland - generally, we tend to be a warmer bunch. Straightforward, no-nonsense overview - thank you ! P.S. Who's the band playing the initial music ?

I own one of these but I just don't use it as much these days. I picked up an SQ20 hybrid, and now I don't have to scan my Instax anymore. I did a lot of side-by-side testing and the end result Instax frames are essentially identical.

Very well made and entertaining video. Instax square pics you took look fab. What would you say your “hit” rate was from all you took (exposure/focus wise)? I would use Instax square but I’m too much in love with my sx70 sonar even though it’s twice the price per shot and film needs looking after for consistent results.

    • @Eclectachrome

Thank you!! It was high! Exposure and focus, the camera nailed for most shots, there were very few that didn’t come out great…or that I didn’t like…but this is after getting used to the camera and knowing what works and what doesn’t, the sonar sounds fun though!! When it hits it hits ❤️

As a 35mm SLR user for years I now use 20 year old digicams and they are fun and challenging to use for street photography. @@Eclectachromewell done. I received only a few hours ago the same camera. If you want to know the date, look at the serial number. Online you'll find a chart which gives a good idea. I think this Rolleiflex 1953/4 is no different from the expensive 2.8mm. You have to compensate for that. So what? I think the choice of film is key. 100 iso for very fine grain, low contrast high key or 400 for more blacks and drama. I'm nervous. Used to have a Yashica 124 mat a Rolleiflex imitation, but then got sucked into digital with Nikons, Canon, then Sony. But the concentrated image in the dark square? Incomparable. I just know it after years of too many too thoughtless shots.

Congratulations! with your Rolleiflex MX. The Rolleiflex is perhaps the most significant camera ever. It was the go-to camera for professional photographers from the time it came out in 1929 until the 1970s. You should not be disappointed that it is not an aperture 2.8 lens. In the old days, the aperture 3.5 models were known to be the best lenses, whether it was Zeiss Tessar, Planer, or like your Schneider Xenotar (or Xenar?). The camera, and especially the lens, is way better than the Seagull and is worth all the money, to me it sounds like a really good buy.
