All new J40 sporty, Have they gone a step to far?
I almost didn't upload this one? The brand new J40 was a sports cruiser we were all waiting for but I recon they have gone way too far with this J40 sailboat. This is a bit of a rant and I should imagine I won't be getting an invite to test sail this one?

Many of you have followed us from the beginning and know this channel was created to follow our search for a boat to take us around the world. Oh Yeah, give a Woman her heavy machinery and watch what she can Do!!! Really like the rendering and colour. Leigh I'd be making those boulders a garden feature even perhaps a small waterfall into a largish fish pond, somewhere u can play with ur remote control boats 🤣😂 Wow you've both done amazing work, and I know what it's like Maxine and I built our own home from the ground up. I look at it now and just smile, thinking wow we built this. Love this side of u too, in ur cool work outfit😎. Hope u all have the best Xmas and get spoilt rotten, especially Aby, and maybe 2025 you'll get the yacht of ur dreams. Lots love, respect💙🏳️🌈
Haven’t seen this video before but had to lol at @19.06 you comments about noise from the engine rooms. I too was shocked at the literally unbearable noise in the aft cabins when the engine is running. Imagine spending €2,000,000 or thereabouts and damaging your hearing whilst trying to sleep! Similarly @20.45 and the lack of hand-holds and safety rails coming down from the flybridge in heavy weather. Big high stainless rails inboard, but nothing outboard? That said, no big deal because if you can afford to buy a boat like this, you can afford to buy the extra stainless and you can afford to soundproof the engine rooms.
Love the honesty! Hard to come by these days..
Side note Sailing Sweet Ruca are a really nice Couple, but not a channel in line with my type of Sailing, and this was really brought home by them being forced to anchor outside the Reef of a Pacific island lagoon, because the Draft of their boat was way too deep to let them Sail in. All of my prior Classic Sailboats have had close to a 4 foot Draft, loved the heavily built Bilge Keel Sailboats, and particularly my friend ‘Crasher’ Steve’s Macwester 25, which was the first Comfortable Sailboat I Crewed on, and that thing was as tougher than an outside Toilet, and even survived Steve ignoring instructions that the final buoy marking where to turn to Port to avoid the Rocks going fast in an inflowing Tide, had him crashing the Boat at full speed into the Rocks, such that the Mast with a loud audible Twang went forward, as did the boat until it left the rocks, none of the standing rigging Broke, no water came in below, and we waited until the boat dried out to check for damage, and there were just small gelcoat hips in each keel, which I fixed before the tide came n. That’s how Crasher got his nickname, and if it was possible to embed it in a Sandbar Crasher would embed it in a Sandbar. Great guy though, other than being a Sailing incompetent. A genius with Horses and making Money though, he was a self made millionaire three times, and three wives ended up swell off, when a million was still a lot of money. I would have gone anywhere on that tough as old boots Macwester though, talk about a boat to inspire Confidence. The only thing it needed was a major upgrade in Engine power, as the Dolphin two stroke inboard totally Sucked. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍🎄❤️⛵️
PPS. Yep 2.2 mtr Draft Way too deep for me, but you may have noticed that I have pretty much Surrendered Big Time for a 5 foot Draft and an ICW friendly Mast height to get a very Comfortable Live Aboard Catalina 42/44 of 5 or 6 series production which buggers right up my plans of Continuing to get into Estuaries and up navigable Rivers, which has been a real passion of mine. Ah well, Sacrifices and compromises have to be made, even if glumly, until the right boxes to tick start appearing on Construction Option Lists I suppose. Final Live Aboard Boat being a Motor Cruiser can recover the Fun of that, with no Draft or Mast height problems to worry about, plus Canal (which I usually find claustrophobic) Route through France and down to the Med Though I have done that a few times by Motorbike, may have me getting there by Michael of Sailing Gently Channel, could well have me doing his Gentle Sailing Route to the Med, along the Coasts of France, Spain, and Portugal, which should be just as wonderful a trip, as it is by Sailboat. That route is so popular, it is now in its 12th Edition. The poor guy broke his leg, a week before he was due to fly out post Hurricane Season to his Beneteau Oceanis 323 which this season he kept in Martinique. But he is back on board now, and faces the soon arriving mending leg insufferable itching, and he may not have the usual relief of a knitting needle to scratch inside his plaster cast with. I am presently going through Similar with the New skin starting to appear, mostly on my left leg and foot, and the itching after I apply the Epaderm moisturiser is indescribable. In very good news, my heart efficiency is now stable and my kidney efficiency has gone up from 26% to 30% and as my kidney efficiency sister says, we must be doing something right. 😅😅😅 Have a Great Christmas, and best of luck flipping your house, it looks lovely, and a lot like a Mid Wales Traditional Farm House, but as France was part of Britain back around then, perhaps not that Surprising 😅 👍🌟❤️⛵️🎄

Unfortunately that's boat ownership, sometimes there are a lot of sacrifices and to many compromises but hey it's a great lifestyle that only a few get to discover. Well worth it I think.
Firstly, thanks for another boat tour. Secondly, Merry Chrimbo to you and yours. Lastly, it's so refreshing to see and hear someone be completely open and honest on a review. If a manufacturer is cutting corners on build, then call them out on it. Its not just about money, it's also people's lives.
Happy you liked it and a happy Christmas to you and yours as well. I feel it's time in my reviews to be a little more open and honest about what I see and think of the yachts. Nothing disrespectful but anything we believe you should know or see we are going to put out there.
PS. Great Tour, and very well said by the Way, that is a hell of a lot of money for a 40 foot Sailboat. While NOT a Racing Sailboat, I can get a far Superior Cruising Catalina 425 Brand New unused 2023 model for close to 200,000 dollars less than that believe it or not, which is fully kitted out and ready to go,and if it is still available when my Piggybank finally fills back up, I will expect an even lower price to snap their hands off, even with a 5 Foot Draft, and ICW friendly Mast Height. I will be forced to suffer in Comfort thanks very much, or a similar discount on the Catalina 445.Tough Choice. Expect similar discounts on Unsold 2024/2025 model 426 and 446 Sailboats as well frankly. All those models, plus if big enough the 380 based models are extremely well performing excellent Live aboard Sailboats. The 385 for example can be had with I think a 4 ft 8 inch Draft plus ICW friendly Mast Height, but unfortunately I really need a bigger Sailboat. All with nice Curvy in all the right places and Beamy ish hulls, and not sure about engine options with the 380 class, but larger have very nice larger engine options, for example 57 hp Yanmar option with the 425 and direct drive. Any Anchor will fit on the Bowsprit too. Great leak proof Standing Rigging Deck fittings, and so much good stuff built up from years of Customer feedback.I think I have finally found a Sailboat that I can live Comfortably with, though access into and out of places I would like to go - into estuaries and up Rivers is pretty much Ruled Out - still, can’t win them all,and all Compromises are very easy to live with, a bit better than usual tankage, a water desalinator takes care of extra needs, good enough beam for adequate Solar , decent Northern Lights Generator - not dodgy Fischer Panda, so looking after batteries to keep them in tip top Condition is no problem and a shocking amount of other well designed very good liveaboard Stuff along with it, and all to an outstanding build standard. To be honest, Only a Beneteau Oceanis comes close and for less Mondy. Is the extra for a Catalina worth it as some Ask ? Well if you are very careful about when you buy an overbought unsold model after the launch of a new model year, that new unused Catalina might just cost you less, for a much better long term live aboard Sailboat ? It’s the little but highly intelligent features that rapidly mount up, such as the Chain plates accessibility, the bowsprit that can handle pretty much any anchor, plus a second one, and the large chain locker, really nice galley that is secure to use under way, I like the forward Pullman berth with the heads and shower forward, and an ok with the Day head being a set head in the Tropics, just get a Wand Shower Head for it and with a nice pumpy soap Dispenser and a micro fiber hand towel, you have a hygienic Bidet setup for the Tropics, and easy wash and dry towels system for them to dry off on the side rails, even without a Washing Machine.I know, I’ve Rabbited on again, but it is a bit exciting to finally find a Sailboat that I can live with, even if I have to make a few Sacrifices in the places I would really like to get to with one, and I still have the 4 foot Draft Island Packet 349 in Second place to fall ack on if needed, but the Catalina pips it. Merry Christmas To All. Bob. ❤️⛵️🎄
I can't wait for the day you eventually get your boat, Bob, it will be all the Christmases in one.
Hi Ladies. I forget the name of the Channel on UA-cam now, but the Owners of a J45 took theirs successfully around Cape Horn, and when in the Pacific took on a Catamaran in a Race and I was Cheering them on as they Comfortably won that Race. 😅 Other than that though, tbh Sailboats like this are so diametrically opposite my kind of Sailboat, such that it wouldn’t be fair to comment that there isn’t anything on this Sailboat, no matter how well built and equipped it might be, other than hoping it is available with a Yanmar inboard diesel, for much better global availability of Spares. Volvo seriously need to get their act together in that regard frankly and I actually like their engines, but even though Volvo spares are chronically overpriced, at least make them easily globally available? I ❤ their Saildrives too, so it is more than a bit sad really, as you need to go to at least the 80 hp Yanmar, to get Anna’s good ZF Saildrive, though to be fair the often unmentioned problem Cone issue with Yanmar Saildrives did receive a significant Upgrade kit fix several years ago now, so owners need to check whether the Upgrade Fix has been done to theirs, or has been already applied to new Saildrives. Too much silence has surrounded this issue frankly. Usual moan over, so a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to All. Bob.🤔🌟🌟🌟👍❤️⛵️🎄🎄🎄
I know who you mean, superb sailboat and great sailors to.
Thank you for your honesty... I agree with you 100%... maybe it's a bit unfair to be so harsh without having been on the water but to be honest I don't think there would be any big surprises on the water either.
It was a little hard but it was a boat we were expecting a lot from being the history and DNA of J,boats but was so sadly disappointed. I would love to get out on the water with one of these and be shown that once again they have in fact built a great boat, but I can't see that happening.
I swear all my favorite youtubers wind up doing a house build/reno eventually. best of luck!
Great video, what makes your reviews stand out, is they are authentic, and because you don’t bullshit. Many other reviews out there are more like sales videos. I get the impression that the boats in the 35-40ft range seem to have adequate kitchen / lounge space, but where they fall short is the bedrooms. However, a 40ft catamaran has more than enough space. I’d be interested to see your perspective on cat Vs monohul 👍
Ok, I will think on that as it's a great subject on which I think we can stir up a bit of a debate.
Hi! I follow a couple who's going on a circumnavigation on the route I find more interesting: throught Patagonia. They're americans and sail a J46 with a few years. Their backround is regatta sailing. It's great to see how one understand the other's moves, they a very fine tuned sailing couple. It is a pleasure to see how their boat navigates. On Cape Horn it reminded me of my crazy sailing days on a Laser under heavy weather in Búzios. great fun, fast, wind on the face, water splashing - but they were on a 46 foot very stable boat. Beautiful! J Boats left an impression on me due to "Sweet Ruca". I find this J 40 a somewhat strange boat. I believe it must be a nice sailing one, due to J's DNA. But lacks a definition, a reason to exist. It''s a mutant in the middle of the transformation. It has dual helm but it's not that wide. The hull look a mix of an older project with a renewd interior. The single bathroom is very small. Ok, it's a day regatta sail boat, one can say. But its kitchen and saloon go in the other direction. And it has a nav table! Anything that tries to be everything ends up being nothing. Seems to be the case here. And that price!! You're perfectly right! Wow! I'd prefer a well defined Halberg Rassy 340 - or a bigger used one - to this without a blink of the eyes. It's an american boat. Maybe in America they like specs this way and have money to spend on it. But I'm with you: this is the most nonsense boat ever on this channel! A VERY Merry Christmas to you all, have a great family time and Happy Holidays!
Damn, thanks for putting me Straight, I was sure Sweet Ruca was a J45 lol Brain Fart time again 🤣 Merry Christmas. Bob.👍🌟❤️⛵️🎄

That's it exactly, you hit the nail on the head it is trying to be too many things at once.
Bravo. I admire reviewers who are not afraid to give honest reviews- it makes your enthusiasm for boats such as the Moodys and Garcias more meaningful. I sail the J/105 and J/35c all the time, so love J Boats, but this J/40 doesn't do much for me. You are right to compare it to the Dehler- I've been able to sail the Dehler 38 SQ recently and it's a great boat. The J/40 is also weirdly heavy for a racing boat- fully a 1000# heavier than the old Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 40.
Glad you liked it, I was so excited to get on this boat, as a fan of J boats I was expecting big things. Well, it's sad to say but it was a big let down and I know Toby's test sail went well, they were getting boat speed slightly faster than wind speed (downwind I might add with a lot of canvas) but that's nothing new with J boats. We have been invited to test the RM1080 in February/March 2025, we can't wait as we know the shipyard has made a few little changes.
I'm in Virginia, U.S.A.🎉 it's a great vessel, I'm stoked😮

@@brownnoise357 well depending upon budget it will likely have an aluminum hull, but you never know. A shipyard was supposed to be sending us another deal this week, once again they have let us down. We will be talking about this an a few videos next year when we know what we can get away with saying legally without getting sued. We are not impressed and would like to let everyone know why.
@ I really keep having an issue getting a boat with a Shallow enough Draft, but I think Selden can provide me with a short enough Air Draft Mast. The Texas Catalina Agents, bless them, just can’t seem to get their heads around that the result will be a not Very Fast Boat, when with the right Sails, it will be plenty fast enough for Cruising. So to help them, I told them to look at Sam Holmes’s Channel latest video, of him Sailing up the Gambia River, and then to imagine if Power lines were saving right over the channel in the River. Not that I would ever seek to Sailing up West African River mind, my Doctor of Tropical Diseases Specialist Uncle ran a Health Clinic there for years, and was even worse than China for incubating Really Nasty Diseases. Sam has a very Shallow Draft Sailboat as well, but is way too Suicidal for me to keep Subscribing to his channel due to taking way too many Stupid Risks - I think he is after a Darwin Award tbh.☹️ It is looking like a choice between an Island Packet IP 349 with a 4 foot Draft, or a Catalina 426 with a 5 foot Draft Maybe the earlier 425. 445, if there are deals around. There is a heck of a lot to like about Catalina’s- Solidly built, well designed, and very comfortable boats as they pay a lot of attention to their Customers feedback. On an issue totally unrelated to Sailing, I have had to Cross a really big line as a first step, in an extremely important Constitutional Matter by communicating with the Head of the UK Supreme Court. Depending on how he Reacts, I may have to cross increasingly serious lines as well, so I may end up getting bumped off. The Barrister I was a Constitutional Researcher for got bumped off, and if I hadn’t been so Superfit when my GP started giving me prescriptions for Meds that gave me life Threatening Side effects, I would be dead already, confirmed by the Cardiologist who took a detailed look,at every Prescription I had been given for over 25 years, and not a single one should have been prescribed for me. I am actually ok with it, having been on the other side so often with Near Death Experiences, but didn’t want to come back, yet kept being sent back, so no worries really.Sorry for just blurting that out, but just in case I suddenly just disappear it’s a chance to Wish you every Success and long, happy, and prosperous lives and plenty of good Sailing. If it proves to be as effective as expected, then even I may be tempted back to participate in Sailboat Racing, admittedly not a strong Temptation, but the remaining Community will probably be a much nicer Community for Sailboat Racers to be a part of, as well as by default, a much Safer one as well. Remember, the Alabama Race Organisers, due to the Severity of the Storm Forecast to hit the area of the Race, Cancelled it, but thanks to the extreme lobbying of Sailing Club Members and Club Officials pressured the Organisers to go ahead with the Race, which resulted in Boats lost and People Dead. These are exactly the same type of juvenile and irresponsible people I walked away from Sailboat Racing at a brisk pace after the 1979 Fastnet Race Tragedy, and they are largely indirectly Responsible for every Sailboat Race Tragedy since then, in my honest opinion . How do we fix this Attitude Problem in people who have had some sort of Responsible Adult Bypass Otherwise, without Strictly laying down a Rules procedure to Snare them and facilitate excluding them ? 🤔 Bob.👍❤️⛵️
Marvellous! - your commentary, is so special! I love your coverage, thank you
Glad you enjoy it!
What an impressive yacht! Great to see the Oceanchef XL Induction cooker installed beautifully in the galley too!
We agree!
I like the pegasus 50 better but I'm an ex racer
I’m not sure if I misunderstood, but do you have a clear view outside when sitting down at the table? Ps: Bord-a-bord had a smaller version (46) some years back, so this is a tried concept. Love your work, please give us a tour of the facilities if you get any chance!
Ziehe nächstes mal Handschuhe an, dass man diese idiotischen Tätowierungen nicht ertragen muss.
It will not hust to add prices in description as soon as you know it [;o/
@@ericseidel4940 I know but I had this one wrong, it was well optioned out and discounted for the show. I didn’t want to mislead anyone.
Great alternative for the jeanneau 349/350 and Oceanis 34.1
@@FrankNolf m’y thoughts exactly.
PS. the old Rule of Thumb 1 horsepower of inboard engine per foot of boat length turned out to be totally inadequate, and 2 hp per foot actually turned out to be about right. See the Beneteau Oceanis with either the 100 hp or 110 hp inboard diesels for Confirmation. It is always better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. Good Torgue at low rpm = good propulsion with the right prop, and very decent fuel economy with it. Bob who loves good Diesel Engines. ❤
@@brownnoise357 someone who agrees with me about having more power, it’s an option I would always go for is a bigger engine.
Damn, this Maxus 35 is the biggest Sailboat they Build - so Far - very disappointing decent headroom for a 35 at 1.99 mtrs, good minimum Draft at 1.5 mtrs, awful engine power at 29 hp though = noisy Vibrating 3 cylinder Yanmar. the 4 cylinder 45 hp Yanmar for me is barely acceptable, and the 57 hp much more acceptable, but just wouldn't fit in I suspect. They could do a Fantastic job with say a 43 foot Sailboat in my honest opinion, and likely could sell a heck of a lot of them Globally with a Shoal Draft worthy of the Name, and still at 1.5 mtr Draft. I doubt one would get off the Drawing board and into Production fast enough for me though. 😢 Bob. 👍🌟🌟🌟♥️⛵️
@@brownnoise357 we will have to see what they come up with in the future.
They are a really good yard, build great boats - both power and Sail, and do indeed hold out a lot of promise for the future.Bob. 👍
PS. I was bloody lucky with my last Sailboat, which was badly underpowered when I needed it, but it was a new 22 hp engine, literally just run in by me, with a well matched Prop and spotlessly clean bottom paint with slippery antifouling, and when we got to the big Wave at the end of the Tidal Rip, she just had enough power to climb through it, or someone up there was yanking on the Mast to pull the boat Clear. She actually needed at least a 45 hp motor imho. Still being the first one to survive one of their regular attacks will do me. 👍🌟⛵️
PS. An explanation behind what caused me to attempt to come up with a solution to the not healthy elements involved in Sailboat Racing, was the introduction by Raymarine of the Sailpoint mode and the Alpha Performance Display, which I pointed out to them would likely Result in people running a Sailboat constantly at 100% Stress Loadings, and I suggested that they Create Customisable dedicated Cruising and Voyaging Menu Choices, so that much Safer Stress loadings percentages can be chosen. Because as is, the only value is to SailboatRacers. I just heard back from Raymarine, they get my point, and said all of the necessary settings can be edited to what is needed, and I expect it will take a while for Suitable Menu choices with simple settings adjustments to appear. I have tried to always keep stress loadings to 80% Maximum, but not infrequently, and particularly when off multiple headlands with multiple Acceleration zones slamming from Varying directions, things can rapidly become difficult to manage on a boat with an underpowered inboard engine, and trying to cope with Hank on Sails and classic slab Reefing, plus in such places, turbulent Water conditions such as Overfalls have led to hours of discomfort waiting for Slack water while anchored up with sails down and only relived by Frequent Mugs of hot OXO or Tea and Coffee, plus lots of Cigarettes. 🤣🤣🤣 Best Wishes. Bob. PS. Hopefully you all have a Very Merry Christmas.❤️🎄 🎄🎄🎄🎄
Any plans for a 40+ foot hull?
@@johnadams7402 Not sure as yet, I believe they will see how this does on the market. I think though if the did decide to produce a 40 it would be well received if it is built as well as their existing boat’s.
@SVTONICBoatWives It's a great looking boat. And from your video it seems to be of high quality and well thought out. Thanks for your time.
Nice review. Love this boat. I wouldn’t change anything on this design. Love it.
@@patrickjohn2990 Thank you, I am glad you liked it.
Nice job. That said if you blindfolded me and dropped me on this boat w/o reference to its manufacturer I would be hard pressed to tell the difference from the so called production boats. I may have missed it but didn't see any basic pricing? Ikea interior which seems to be the standard. Forget Teak heavy expensive and impossible to source for a host of reasons. Pretty boat none the less.
@@ebenmarsh9880 Happy you liked it.
Insta-love. This certainly doesn't have the cheaper look of a production boat, and the svelte shape has most of the amenities of a 45 thoughtfully arranged into 35'. Brilliant layout, and great tour. Thanks for showing us something off the beaten path. This is very impressive.
@@someguy9440 Glad you liked it and we have a few more unique boats coming up over the next few weeks.
Actual glass is premium. But is it really? When I replaced the windows in my yacht, choice was hardened tinted safety glass or Perspex (Polycarbonate) or Acrylic. There was less than 10% price difference in each type of material. I was told by our local boat window company that the differences / Pro's and Cons are: Glass doesn't scratch - but it can shatter. Polycarbonate bends and is flexible (so not suited to horizontal hatches) and is 36 times stronger than glass This is the stuff you make bullet proof windows out of. Acrylic is quite rigid, 14 times stronger than glass, has more tint options and is suited to horizontal hatches as it does not flex. Acrylic is hard to polish if it gets scratched.
@@mostlysailingnz Interesting perspective on the window material, I know when looking for our boat we have considered different options because of the destinations we want to explore and the fact they will be on an Aluminum boat.
Grt walk through again. Thank u. T DS looks massive. Grab handles everywhere. Don't mind t v berth. I like that its only one mattress, not 3. 🍻
@@woody4269 Thank you, I liked it and really think it makes a great alternative to other boats on the market.
Very impressive boat! It doesn't feel small at all except that it only has one head. But it's definitely not built for throwing big parties so it really doesn't matter.
@@constantineding8700 I was surprised by how spacious it felt considering the size, it looks fun and well built.
Thanks for reviewing this Boat. It has to be the Same Company I did a Deep Dive into, and Contacted years ago after seeing a Motor Cruiser Reviwed by Nick Burnham of a very comfortable and impressive boat, from a Company that has been building a lot of Boats for a long time. Shortly after my Mother's Death, I was attempting to get my Father Back Afloat in a Boat, to do things with him, like taking him Down Michael of Sailing Gently Channel's Wonderful Gentle Coastal Route down to the Med, or the French Canal Route to get there. Unfortunately, the Boat Nick Reviewed was only available with a single inboard Diesel Engine, and, for me, twin Diwsels are essential for the Marine Environment. They said they would let me know when a Twin Diesel model was available, and years later, I received an email informing me that they now made exactly what we had been looking for, mbut by then, Dad was already in a Care Home, and any thoughts of such Trips with him, had missed the opportunity. I think it may well be time to get in touch with them again, to see what Sailboat options they now have available. Thanks again for this Tour, seems they have kept their high standards. 🤔 Best Wishes. Bob. 👍🌟🌟🌟♥️⛵️
Very nice coverage.
@@Dean_W-Cdn thank you
I think it’s funny how she says “I don’t know if Tobey has done this one yet” and we know exactly who that is. Cool boat, I like the cockpit and the swim platform. The V berth isn’t designed for long term cruising lol
Her name is Sarah 😀
@@DefaultUser61 As it happens Toby did test this exact boat for the cruiser of the year award, I was just having a little fun with him. Still I am happy you liked the boat and your right about the V berth but it would be fun trying.
I would have done something different with the front berth. Not really practical for anything other than cheese 🧀 as is.. Otherwise nice boat.
Disagree. I lived in a vee-berth for a few years and it's just fine if you sleep feet-to-bow. The bonus is that you'll never get thrown out your bunk if you do take a wave on the beam. I've been a landlubber for going on 10 years now but I miss the cozy feeling of getting tucked into a nice vee berth with a good book and a reading lamp. Even in a bumpy anchorage I never thought it was that bad on my 30 footer w/ full keel.
Unusual starting price for sure .. 😂
@@desfarrell909 I thought so too.
