@SVTONICBoatWives every time I research a yacht, I find a new requirement to add to my list. If the Sirius DS 35 or 40 came in aluminum, it would be a perfect yacht for me. The Ovni 370 and Garcia 45 are also near perfect.
      1. Ability to singlehand, all lines aft
      2. Ability to beach / shallow draft, swing centerfold
      3. Easy access to all systems and redundancy at that
      4. Separate shower room/area
      5. In mast or in boom furling if only to make it significantly easier
Am I allowed to go on? :) aluminum is my top choice for structural integrity to weight ratio and safety. I would also prefer multiple sources of energy generation and independence. I think it's time I whip out the ol' excel list I've been making 😁

@@SVTONICBoatWives Vital for me- a Shallow Draft, ideally 4ft 6 inches, but as close as possible to 5ft I don't lose access to too many places, Wide Beam with Hard Chine, but with a good below waterline Design matched with a moderate displacement for comfort, A non linear very secure glaaley for safe and secure use underway. Two Dry Heads with sit down Showers. absolutely Vital for protecting Sailcloth from horrific and rapid Sailcloth and Stitching damage, and not just in the Tropics is - In Mast Furling. It is looking ascthough I am going to havecto pay for a new Mast and suitable Standing Rigging to be ablecto getvthis on my next boat as gettingvwhat I need is very rare as not have classic Masts. A KISS principles Sloop Rig with an Aft Cockpit. It looks like I'm going to have to get an experimental Furling Main built, which could take a few attempts to get Right. Post Purchase add ons important for me, are secure handholds above and below deck, An Oversized inboard Diesel Engine, preferably Yanmar Direct Drive - Volvo parts are chronically overpriced so I refuse to reward Volvo for that, plus Yanmar parts Globally are much easier to get. Plus good engines deserve good propellers, and I haven't tested a Flexofold Prop yet. I really Like Oversized Genuine Lewmar Delta Anchors on the end of all high quality triple Galvanised chain, especially how mine performed in a pretty extreme Tornado Storm, so I'm sticking with them tbh. No timber o Deck foot and knee friendly Non slip Only, and white forvthe Tropics. Bridge height friendly Mast taking into account a 6 db gain Shakespeare VHF aerial on the end of low loss cable all the way to the Radio below deck, with proper waterproof connections, for maximum range. A Furling Gennaker for Downwind, and a 140 to 150 % Furling Triradial Genoa with 3 reinforced Reefing Points with Telltales and Offshore construction, or a Reaching Furling Code Zero - depends on chat with Sailmaker.. For the routes I am planning on using, a Watermaker is pretty much an essential tbh. I have never had, nor needed a bow thruster, then it dawned in me, they are like having an emergency backup steering, so why not, as I like ackups. LED lighting saves a lot of power ? Siderail mounted Gas BBQ seems sensible while at Anchor, Pretty nuch default are Spray hood, I India for sun and rain shelter, and onnecting to the Aft Cockpit Arch for help shelter. Have a full I dependent Survey Done if you get a secondhand boat to start off on the right foot, and don't forget to get engine oil tested fairly regularly. Try to have annual haulouts as well so very thorough checks can be carried out. The Convenience of very thorough checks was why I really lo Ed a friend's Macwester 25 Bilge Keel and his estuary Mooring which Dried out onto Clean Sand, as he was forever having Boating I cidents die to not paying attention, so we had to wait for low tide and sky out, to thoroughly inspect his Hull with a Torch, before heading to the Pub, with a how the hell did that not do far worse damage frequently going through our minds. He was a lovely guy, ex Merchant Navy, thought he knew enough, but was bloody Clueless about Sailboats. Still , is Little Mac kept him Sane while his parents were going through end of Life Difficulties, plus upstream to his mooring on the Estuary was a cracking place to be, plus an easy walk to the Pub. A major Win, in other Words. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍❤️

      My wife and my list:
      (1) Lines to the helm: halyards, furls, outhauls and reefs should be lines that come back to the cockpit. Powered winches are fine, but you shouldn't have to rely on hydraulic or high voltage systems except for windlasses and (potential) thrusters.
      (2) Ability to protect/canvass the helm: we sail twelve months a year in the Pacific Northwest, where it hovers just above freezing Nov-Mar and only gets to room temperature on the water July-Sept. Need to be able to protect the helm from wind and rain, either through canvass, dodger, a storm helm, or all of the above.
      (3) Handholds: boat should have robust handholds getting out of the cockpit and then running forward to at least the mast if not further. This also means good mounts for jack lines.
      (4) Bright salon: whether "deck salon" or not, PacNW winters are gloomy so we need to make the most of the available light. Big windows, preferably at eye level, and 360 degrees views preferred.
      (5) Storage, storage, storage: a tidy boat is a less stressful boat to sail. A place for everything and everything in its place. Too many "Category A" boats offer only perfunctory storage in the galley and staterooms, much less generally.

Hi! Nice to see you and Sarah reviewing boats together! Good for a second and important point of view!
Getting crazy here, lots of work! And haven't won the lottery yet... But still trying :)
What a lovely boa, a mini Garcia! Does its have insulation all around, like the Garcias? A very safe aluminium boat. Seas are getting filled with "objects". A few months ago a boat that was going to Africa sank due to hitting "something" at night. Unfortunately the owner died but the other three managed to survive and were rescued a few hours later. So, stronger boats are becoming a must for blue water, I guess. And this one's really interesting.
I'd fit it with more freezer space, a/c and heater system and chart plotter on the protected cockpit area.
A factory visit is a very good idea! Promise I'll be more frequent again. Love your reviews! See you on the next, all the best!

    • @SVTONICBoatWives

Great to see you back and busy, yes all the Ovni ranges are fully insulated to a high level it's done differently but just as good. It's really great to see you two interact, definitely adds to the review! As far as the boat goes, it's a fantastic boat and comes well equipped for about $600K. However, the fridge seems small and the cold storage space is in general limited. I've seen people put an additional freezer in the aft starboard work area but then I'm not sure if this leaves enough space for a generator.

Great tour! A really thoughtful use of 39 feet. I routinely get to sail a Nauticat 39, and this strikes me as a modern, aluminum riff on the same concept. As with all 36-39' boats, the cabins really seem built for skinny French persons and not big Americans such as myself. It would be tempting to remove the big sail locker in the front and the lazarette in the back to maximize the staterooms, but then where would you store stuff beyond the workroom?
By all means do the factory tour!!! My biggest beef with Alubat, Boreal and Grand Large (Allures/Garcia) is that they make amazing boats but their websites have nowhere near as much information as some of the high end GRP boatbuilders such as Hallberg-Rassy or Oyster. Eager to know more!

    • @SVTONICBoatWives

I haven't yet had the chance to sail on a Nauticat so I can't compare except from images on the interweb, but if we get to Inapolise sometime I might get my toes wet on one so looking forward to that. For us or what I would advise is to just remove one of the lockers ie in the cabin you would use as yours so, to gain the extra space and leave the other, it's a compromise but that's boats and as for big Americans I'm a short arss so everyone is big to me. 😁😂
You are spot on about their websites and I know Alubat will be doing something about theirs in the future but at the moment I believe they are mega-focused on the two new launches coming soon, Ovni 490 and the Ovni cat, so I hope they will catch up soon. Allures I know will be working on theirs as well, I am not allowed to say sorry my hands are tied but big changes in the future.🤐🤐

@SVTONICBoatWives Oh wow, as I was researching Boreal and other aluminum yachts, I was reading that the wait times were ballooning to about 5 years. I am planning to treat her as a liveaboard and eventually a circumnavigation. I grew up sailing an O'Day with the folks, would prefer an aluminum vessel for safety, security and capability.
Curious - what are your thoughts on fit and finish versus the Garcia Expedition 45? Or even the Boreal? These two brands seem to go above and beyond in marketing how robust their metal thickness is, their wood work, etc. Would you say that the Ovni is more spartan by that standard?
The 370 strikes me as a perfect size for a liveaboard and for a singlehanding eventually. You think there's enough space to provision for a few months off the grid? Sorry for so many questions - I'll eventually email Ron at AlubatAmericas to get more details but additional POVs never hurt :)
Looking forward to the next vids!

Absolutely do a factory tour. Very interested in this boat. One point to cover: What is the actual advantage from welding top to hull first and making furniture to fit through gangway? They talk this point a lot. Is it just better access to weld, making more and better welds? Why is building interior and fitting into hull, THEN welding deck on "less good"? That and more. Go to factory.

PPS.Cork insulation works brilliantly try, though can be a bloody nightmare to install. I had aheat loss problem with a Kounge wall with a Stairwellon the other side of itin my PenthouseApartment, with the Wall icing up inside in Winter, even with a Storage heater against that wall, so decided to Cork Tile it. Problem 🤔 :
    - The Tile instructions were to unpack all of the Tiles and spread them out to acclimatise for a few Days. Result - Ever Tile Ended Up a Different Size. It took me over two weeks to Trim and fit the Tiles into a Satisfactory Result, and the entire time I was off my Trolley with the Adhesive Fumes. That Wall did look so good though, when I sold the place I had a few people involved in a Price War, so it paid off. Re this boat, I think I'm liking the sound of the 43 tbh. Best Wishes. Bob. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍❤️

It sounds like a labour of love with that wall. I have a question for you and I can't give too much away (signed an NDA) To keep things simple on a battery system for say a 45ft boat changing out Standard lead battery for Gell, as we would be waiting for a sodium system in the future not lithium. Installation is to be done in the UK as we have to keep it secret wink, wink, anyone you might recommend as every company I know is French.

@@SVTONICBoatWives tbh, I'm designing around a Core Bank 1 of batteries that are high quality 4500 cycle AGM- and for which there is the weight advantage of helping to counterbalance the Aft Co kpit Solar Arch and about 1 Kw of Solar Panels- Bank size of about 800 ah - if kept above an 80% State of Charge ( so 160 amps available to cover the hours of Darknesx power needs), then those 4500 Cycles Flatline and never decrease, so barring Lightning Strikes or similar accidents, the Service Life should be in the region of 30 plus years. Lesser quality AGM Batteries should receive similar benefits from being Properly Treated. Which brings us to Battery Bank 2. Finally, there are Lifepo4 Batteries capable of achieving a Similar Service Life by NOT following Battery Manufacturer Treatment Recommendations. The Batteries are made by Li Time and Power Queen, and they are tested to charge and Discharge per artery at 100 amps per hour - which means the internals are up to requirements, and will benefit massively by being Treated Nuch Better. so, say a Bank of three Li Time Plus properly wired up for load Sharing, and kept up above a 50% State of Charge, will retain their Recharge Cycles, and must ne er be Rapid Charged - keep the charge rate at about 0.15 C, where C= the total capacity of the Battery Bank, and thanks to the new groundbreaking BMS in these Batteries, their Service Life should be greatly extended. Purpose of Bank 2 Lifepo4 Battery Bank ? via DC to DC hanging, keeping Bank one topped up and back to 100% Capacity, plus DC to DC Charging doung the same for Engine Start, Anchor Windlass, and Bowthruster Batteries. - oh and Generator start Battery if you have a generator ( I like backups) so keeping every Battery very happy and long lived. Perspective - extremely major advances are needed in Battery technology to have the needed storage Energy Density to be able to fulfill the rather silly promises that are being made for Battery Powered Energy Sources, such as for EV's and Marine power sources. Try finding something that can compete with Gasoline, let alone Diesel Fuel - both of which can be successfully made Synthetically from Renewable Sources, at extremely Low cost - actually fractions of a penny a gallon, and a few pence per gallon if Natural Gas is bought in as feedstock, and the technology to do it, is already available off the Shelf for a fraction of the Cost of Wind and Solar Farms - which can't even recover the Energy used to make, Deliver, and install them. The closest they can get to Breaking Even is in Trade Wind Areas and the Tropics. The nice thing with AGM lead Batteries is low maintenance, and Genhinely 100% Recycleable. Lithium ? I have very strong doubts - but if we can make them last long enough Safely, things should improve rapidly enough ? I was offered a Test Lifepo4 Battery Bank for extended Service Life Testing by Ampere Time, but there wasn't enough honest information around at the time to accept the offer, though they did provide some essential basic facts, such as don't Rapid Charge and don't Deep Discharge, which did provide a useful Headstart. Today, I can confidently fit a 3 battery Bank of about 750 ah, as a management Bank dedicated to maintaining all other Batteries, plus powering a portable induction hob to save on Propane Cooking Gas, for initial Cooking Temperature being reached - only a Charcoal BBQ can beat Lripane for Cooking imho, and I have cooked with it for over 40 years. Synthetic Propane can also be made from Renewable feedstock by the way. Drinking to a bright future for long overdue New Battery Technology. Bob. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍❤️

We are working with a shipyard to build our next boat which will be spending the first 2-3 seasons around the UK, Artic and the tropics, she is a 45ft mono with most of what we need onboard. Update on the Wahl Clippers / Trimmers from Ebay UK Wahl store- this is an improvement on my previous one, it is smaller, more ergonomic fit in the hand, plus the charger plug in is easier. much reduced number of combs in the kit however, that is OK, as there's enough for what is needed without lots of combs being easy to lose, hence the great price of £16 . Happy that they are continuing with the non fire hazard Nimh battery too. Verdict so far a Bargain.👍 Bob.

PS. Yep the construction of the 430 seriously impressed me, but living with a 370 changed a bit to suit me - Selden Mast with in Mast Furling and 40 foot Air Draft, plus switching out the underpowered Nanni for a 45 hp 4 cylinder Yanmar Shaft Drive instead plus a Solid Aft Cockpit Arch should take around 900 Watts of Solar plus Davits, and workshop area = enough space for batteries /o drive Fans and a portable Air Con Unit with Ddhumidifier. 125 amp alternator should help things along a Lot. I need at least a few years of intensively using that drop keel system, to build up enough confidence to go for the430. Lifting /Drop Keels may be ok today, but they a solutely scared the Crap out of everyone I knew if used on anything bigger than a Sailing Dinghy. For a Sraft of Just over 3 foot on its Shallowest setting, I think I'm prepared to test one out with an Atlantic Crossing, and though the comfort rating is a bit misleading, as much depends on how you Sail the Boat, the number when considered against the Displacement indicates a probably Comfortable Crossing, and side bo us, the damned thing is Termite Proof ! 👍❤️
