I am with you on that Bob 41, to small the over 50’s to big. I think it would be possible to single hand but she is better for a couple or small family.
Great review - as always. I've always liked these Moody DS (a little different to most). However , Can anyone tell me what the little pilot house yacht off to Port is ?? About 9:30 into vid when showing Port winches. It looks great for 1 old man 😊
Incredible boat and lovely tour, as usual. Not very sporting with the sheeting angles and such, but that's not really what this boat is about. This feels truly like a hybrid yacht between powerboat style side decks with those beautifully high and secure coamings, the full beam raised and split salon, and the impressive twin mirrored guest cabins aft of the owners suite. I think I would stick with the extra seating to port minus the interior helm station. With all the controls and plotters being wireless and fully remote these days, there's not much need to dedicate limited space to occasional use functions. Looks plenty secure to sit through watch in warmth and comfort - just incredible. Gotta love all those time-out lockers sprinkled throughout the boat. x-)
It’s funny that you have pointed out how similar it is to a motor boat, a good friend of mine has a coastal trawler, he pointed out that if we took the tall stick of it and just had one helm it would be almost a carbon copy of his boat.
@@SVTONICBoatWives Yes the salon and those sidedecks give me flashbacks to an old Chris-Craft I once owned. The cool thing with this Moody is that instead of tanks and twin V8s lying below the salon, you have two staterooms! I think it's difficult to overstate what an achievement in engineering marvel this is. You have all the interior space, displacement, and convenience of yesteryear's motorsailers but this boat looks like it will actually sail well on all points, maybe even in lighter airs with a code zero or a gennaker.
I'm a fan of Moody's well designed DS concept. Being a bit old school I'd have a nav station there, so one doesn't get distracted on passages/night watches. I don't know how it is to do maintenance inside that "engine room" concerning space. It seems nice, but on wide angle even my bedroom look enormous :) If it has a shaft instead of a saildrive, I'd say it's an interesting "more accessible" option to my dream boat, the Amel 50. I like the Moodys to as you say a well designed sailboat, but at this price point we are in the realm of other brands as you rightly pointed out. The engine space is as big as it looks on camera and I was impressed with how well it was setup. I am like you via the navigation system and would opt for a nav screen, autopilot and electronic throttle control forward, and yet I know I would still do all my watches mostly in the cockpit.
Great video. I love this boat. I might go for the proper nav station. Curious what people think… is this too much boat for trade winds sailing? Is it more of a North Sea and high latitude boat?
I do understand the modern way of navigating by iPads etc but for me as an older out of date sailor brought up in the 60s/70s way of boating I would always want a dedicated nav station with room for peer charts and lots of gismos around me. Makes me feel like I am still the skipper/navigator and happy as a pig in sh** . It should also be an area where other peoples crap is not allowed so you don't have to fight for space to work in. Shame on people to bother going to a boat show just to vandalise stuff. Great video always clearly explained and good points noted.
Glad you enjoyed the tour, I will add that I like to still use paper charts on longer passages and an almanac when around local coastal water’s. But I am slowly moving towards a new way of organizing on a sailboat, nope who am I kidding give me a full on nav desk and office space as I like to see it now any day. :)
This is a very good attempt at making a mono into a cat as far as possible of course!! However It makes you wonder if the designers have actually ever done an offshore bluewater passage in foul weather? the last place you want to be is out on the stern lol. But I'd go hide in that lovely salon most the time anyway tbh. Overall an excellent design and I only wish this came out 10 years ago so I could afford one 2nd hand. love your style so subscribed :-)
Interesting and nice boat but... can you imagine doing your laundry with your washing machine located down below the cockpit lazarette? Very unpractical location!!!
Just looking at your new August 2024 Tour of this Sailboat, and for some reason it's showing up on my Samsung TV, but is not showing on my Samsung Tablet, and several things have Struck me about the moody DS 48 - Thanks to that Wonderful Protected Cockpit, and the great Volume Headspace internally, the Moody is probably the Only Henuine Deck Saloom Sailboat, that can really Cut it in the Tropics, and that is being greatly assisted by the Shading Overhangs and the Sizing of the Windows being reasonably affordable to replace, if they suffer from Delamination from UV Exposure ! Impressive- As an aside, Delzmination from UV damage kills the majority of Flexible Solar Panels within 2 years. I like the layout, which appears to have been greatly improved over the original DS 48, which seemed to require you being a Contortionist to be able to get into important maintenance areas, and I really like the biggest inboard Diesel Engine option, and think engine mechanical backup is a sensible option. Great Tour of a nice new boat, that is another Catamaran Destroyer imho. But - There's always a but- I personally still prefer the Mopdy DS 43, now that I know I can get a Cusfom Lead Wing Keel for it, that will definitely work for a Dradt of 4 feet 6 inches, and I can't get that Draft with the 48, which has a Shallow Draft of 1.8 mtrs at about 6 foot. For some people that doesnt matter of course, but for me it rules out getting into and out of far too many places, and I think I'd be stuck with about the same draft, even with a Custom Lead Wing Keel - I figure it to be 44 ft to 45 fft OAL would be the maximum that can make a Custom Lead Wing Keel Work Well with such a reduced Draft tbh. The DS 43 can also be made to work really well with a Short in Mast Furling Main, to get under ICW Bridge heights and Such, with a Compensating Boom Length, which will help keep Sail forces lower down on the boat as well, and encourage early Reefing. This DS 48 is a great Sailboat if you are happy with the limitations imho. Best Wishes, and Big Thank You for the New Tour. Bob. 🤔🌟🌟🌟👍❤️
I am old enough to remember the Angus Primrose designed Moody yachts when the new high volumn boats were introduced. The first time that I was aboard a Moody 33 at Earls Court I was amazed at the volumn, although I might still have had a Folkboat at the time. Mind you, back then a forty footer was virtually a Superyacht, how time have changed. Yes please, I could spend a few months aboard this new "Moody" Let them give you one for a test on the salty stuff, that would be interesting.👍
We would love to have a few days with this DS48 to see what she is like to live with. When we were growing up back in the late eighties our family had a 40 and you are right we felt like millionaires in the marina. How things have changed.
The people getting into your video, seemingly purposefully, and staring into the camera, are the only annoying thing. Your content is good. 😂❤ I say, and I’ll die on this hill, that if you need a washer/dryer on your sailboat, you’re wearing far too much clothing and need to head south until your butter melts and clothes become unnecessary. Clothing on a sailboat 🙄 😂
The only time you need clothes is arriving at the marina, but a washing machine can come in handy from time to time we find it’s the most efficient way to wash the dog. Glad you enjoyed the videos.
How do you get to the end of the boom at sea when there is a big gap in the top, ? I did a big trip on a 54 . It's not user friendly at all , owner sold it shortly afterwards .
@@SVTONICBoatWives if an issue , to get to the zip, check for chafe , single line reefing isn't as practical as they make out, tie a securing line round the boom , but you have a big hole in the roof, great living space , stiff Hanse hull,
@@davidwarnes5158 I like single line reefing but you are right sometimes it can be a pain when you are trying to tidy everything up in the bag. I have a friend who owned a Hanse 55 and sold it for a Garcia 52, he would talk at great lengths about the hull of his Hanse.
It's nice, but considering what Sirius fits into their 40DS it doesn't seem like a great use of space. Engine room access seems... poor. And I'm fine with no wheel in the saloon, but a display at the little nav station would be nice. They should have flush mounted one into the table top.
A dedicated nav station makes no sense these days, unless you really have too much space. Even if you don't like your equipment to be portable, you can set up adjustable screens that go over the table when you need to use them.
if bluetooth and wifi are good enough for sam holmes, it's good enough for me. you wouldn't want margaritas getting spilled on your expensive raymarine chart plotters
Sam Holmes is an exceptional sailor and yes the thought of spilling anything on a chart table is bad enough, we always have a no food, liquid rule around nav electronics so no big deal now where did I leave my GnT.
We visited this boat at Boot Düsseldorf, too. It's not worth the 1.4 million. Cheap materials and poor workmanship. We were shocked to see what the once good brand "Moody" has become, namely nothing better than all the other production boats around. What a shame.
Making boats bigger by making them wider & taller just isnt smart. Waterline length is speed. Increasimg beam increases righting moment but it increases drag just as much and increases weight more. Plus the motion in a seaway gets worse and there is much further to fall when heeled. Shortt wide boats are hard on the helm & autopilot. Sailing loads - and therefore crew loads - are increased. These boats are ok in sheltered water and moderate wind, but are less than ideal in the ocean. Plus Hanse's extremely dubious build quality......
Tip of the day. You are going to have to stop saying "obviously" 6 times in the first 90 seconds this time it starts getting pretty irritating which spoils a good video and I usually end up turning the sound off.🤨
