    Interesting to get a view of Ireland's largest open-air industrial waste dump at Aughinish Alumina, where 40 million tonnes of bauxite residue is held back by those somewhat miniscule looking dykes. I sympathise with Cappagh Farmers Support Group and all those in the area who must suffer the effects of living under the cloud of dust particles this abomination emits. Indeed, if the unthinkable ever happened and these dykes failed, the entire Shannon Estuary would be destroyed for generations. Whether or not one thinks that it's worth the risk for the benefits of employment, I think the process of cleaning up this site should already be under way. Instead, our rather lax planning authorities have allowed the plant to expand their dumping area by 8 hectares, raising the height of the sludge mountain by 12m.

    Castlebar is to get a new freight terminal as well. Meanwhile, Sligo had its freight depot “mothballed” 15 or so years ago despite being twice as big a town as Castlebar and despite Sligo having a harbour. They also let a fairly new crane go to ruin and they also lifted the tracks around an old timber yard. Meanwhile, every day, trucks carrying timber leave the north west for other parts of the country despite the north west being completely unconnected by a motorway.

      @@dronehawk why no passenger

    • @dronehawk
      @dronehawk 4 дні тому

      @jM-ez7fq it's being built because Europe says any major port that can be practically connected by rail , must be connected by rail , so it's only being built to rail freight standard and signalling. Also , all the existing stations along the line are now private homes so any passenger services would require new stations to be built which wasn't in the planning or funding.

  • @radharcanna

    Very impressive. Why a single rail rather than a double? Probably to do with old bridges?

    • @yermanoffthetelly
      @yermanoffthetelly 5 днів тому

      It's going to be used for freight, to and from Foynes port (which is planned for a major upgrade) It doesn't need a double track, though it probably would be no harm to reserve the land in case plans ever changed in the future.

    • @odunadhaigh
      @odunadhaigh 5 днів тому

      Most of Ireland's rail network is single track, and on any priority list for doubling, Limerick to Foynes would be currently be very, very low down; it has not yet established any need for doubling. Lines such as the inter-city route: Cherryville Junction (where the Waterford line branches from the Cork-Dublin line) to Carlow or to Kilkenny City (to name but one example off the top of my head) would be much higher up in terms of priority.

    • @dronehawk
      @dronehawk 4 дні тому

      It was easy to get this through planning as they are only replacing like for like . Adding a second track would have huge engineering and environmental challenges , changing existing bridge structures and tearing up miles and miles of hedgerows to accommodate the second track. The underpass for the N69 would make double tracking unfeasible also.

    Why only a temporary siding ? Surely a few pass-by sidings would be needed ? & why doesn't the railway have sidings down to the quay side & the cranes ?? Maybe it'll be a bit of a white elephant if freight cannot be carried directly to ships & there'll be little commuter traffic unless stations are built closer to the city ?

    • @dronehawk
      @dronehawk 5 днів тому

      The temporary siding is only to park the rail transporter while its loading. I too don't understand why there's no passing loops at Ballingarrane or how the freight will get to the portside and what that freight will be. That's what makes this project so interesting. Im sure someone above my paygrade has this all worked out !

    • @odunadhaigh
      @odunadhaigh 5 днів тому

      @@dronehawk "or how the freight will get to the portside". I'd imagine that that's another part of the overall project. This will be within the estate of the Port of Foynes, and the configuration of such sidings would be determined by the port company in conjunction with its maritime customers.
