Chef's Harvest Farm
United States
Приєднався 10 лис 2019
I'm a former Executive Chef who quit my job to start a farm in my suburban backyard in Knoxville Tennessee.
I started gardening in my backyard to grow food to cook in my home kitchen for my wife and I. It didn't take long before I had way more produce than we could consume. So I started bringing coolers full of my produce to my job and selling it to the other employee's. I started selling to restaurants, and in May of 2022 I went to my first farmers market. After my second farmers market I quit my job and haven't looked back since.
Chef’s Harvest Farm is a profitable, No-till Urban Farm Which uses Organic practice. I specialize in high-quality salad mix and root vegetables. As well as seasonal vegetables such as Cherry Tomatoes, European Cucumbers, Herbs, Hardneck Garlic, and Ginger.
If you're interested in gardening, small scale farming, or cooking. Please subscribe and follow along as I document the progress of my farm with educational and instructional videos.

My question is, does not the soul get depleted? You are planting in same soil over and over again for years... do you just amend it?
@@sarahubert130 I just add more compost and I use cover crops
If you dump the residue of your cover crop into your walkways, won't weeds grow into it, defeating the purpose of the wood chips? You'd probably be better tilling it in or chopping and dropping it on top of the actual bed so it can feed the soil? But if you are worried about the seeds, just solarize the bed then plant on top of it, or lay a thick layer of compost and/or other mulch before planting?
Absolutely not! Watch this video and maybe you’ll understand my process a little better 👊 ua-cam.com/video/QL7uFaYtrWo/v-deo.htmlsi=tGioj65K_CU_qP5f
@@chefsharvestfarm Okay, I will. Just found you and everything else you said made sense...
@ this one might explain it better TERMINATE WINTER RYE COVER CROPS WITH THIS HACK! ua-cam.com/video/evXb_rnR81c/v-deo.html but basically as long as it’s terminated before it forms viable seed. It’s impossible to cause weeds…
@@chefsharvestfarm Okay, saw it got it. Close to what I was thinking, except no tilling or chop-and-dropping, instead you are leaving the cover crop in place and knocking it down over the soil to smother weeds before tarping and then planting on top with compost. I misheard you at some point and thought you had said you were going to chop and drop the cover crop on top of your woodchips.
@ exactly 👍 with the winter killed. I prepped the bed before I planted it. So if winter does kill it I probably will just rake it into the walkways.
HOW is that so weed free!!! Wow!
It’s easy with proper no till management 👊 thanks for watching 🙏
kinda new to your channel. i have seen some other videos in the past. great content. i also live in TN and also in similar growing zone. i live near dale hollow lake so 6b 7a. curious if have a video some steps how i can get going with our 5 acre homestead. now i mean the stuff with the grants and such. and to help get my ducks in a row with the AG so i can be approved for organic such. i do have fruit trees going. and berry plants. i have around 24 different species of berry plants and fruit trees. but we also wanna be able to expand the garden and get selling some foods local more often. we do can and sell jellies already and other canned goods that can sell under the food freedom act in TN for cottage foods. i dont really have a lot of $ and have invested into my home improvement business to get insurance and all that. but work has been slow and tight on funds. but am looking to sell my little boat to help fund the homesteading and profitable garden. i keep feeling like i hit a brick wall in research on the steps to follow correctly to make sure AG says yes lol.
Sounds awesome! I will do a video soon about how I’ve funded everything! But honestly all I did was walk into my county USDA office and start asking questions. I had no clue what I was even asking for. But fast forward several years and I’m on the NRCS Subcommittee to the board of directors. You don’t need to do any research or even know what you’re asking for. There’s people sitting in those offices waiting for someone like you to walk through the door. Best of luck 👊
That is beautiful. Here in Canada, everything is gone, except kale and peppers; it's very cold now. I love your garden. Thanks for sharing
Thank you 🙏 I wish it would get cold and everything would just die here 🤣 I’m ready for a break! Thanks for tagging along 🙏

Thanks for checking it out! 🙏
What is the actual footprint of your garden? It looks larger than a 1/4th acre to me. Also, can you please tell me how your farm is designated legally? Is it an LLC or something else? I've been market gardening as a side hustle on leased land for like 11 years and I finally found a farmhouse on a couple of acres I think I can afford and I need some help on how to proceed.
It’s probably less than 1/4 acre. But it’s right around that. The entire property is exactly 1 acre including house, front yard etc. and yes I have a single member LLC. I’ll be doing a video soon which will include how I structured the business and funded it. Hopefully it helps 👊
@@chefsharvestfarm Thanks so much bro. The house I found is USDA eligible. Trying to convince the only rich relative I have to cosign, haha.
@ nice! You should go to the USDA office and ask for the FSA department. They help farmers who can’t get traditional loans.

For years I also had the problem with growing Sellerie from seeds. But now I have a simply method, and it worked much better than hoped: Take some deeper trays, and fill them till 1 inch from the top. I use old washed meet trays from grocery for it. Must have holes in the bottom to drain water. Sprinkle the Sellerie seeds on top of the soil. press them softly on the soil. Water it very good, but with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the water. That is needed so that no mold will grow. Now cover that in a few layers of transparent kitchen plastic, so that air and moist stay inside but also light gets in. Find a place with much light and temperature between 64°F and 68°F. Sellerie needs cooler temps to germinate. Once enough germinated (10 to 14 days) just remove the plastic and keep it moist. You do not even need to separate them, they can grow pretty big in the tray. Just water them heavy before planting. They are tough guys, no problem with carefully ripping the root apart. I only had a few with sunburn, because I stupidly had chosen the hottest day of the year to transplant them. :D
Thanks for the tips! 🙏 I might try from seed this year again! I like to think I’m a better grower now then I was last time I tried 🤣
I'm always impressed by your accomplishments.
Thanks Jim 🙏

Hey Chef. Greencover seed is where it’s at. I use their warm season soil builder mix and cool season soil builder mix faithfully every year. I have 14 acres that I do a soil building rotation every other year and it has made a HUGE difference in my soils condition and fertility. Thanks for the tip on cover cropping my containers and raised beds. I usually cover my raised beds with leaf mulch, but I’d rather compost that. Cover cropping makes perfect sense. 👍🏽
Wow! That’s awesome! Yeah, I’m super excited about the green cover mixes! I’m using the cool season soil builder mix right now (not too confident winter will actually kill it) but definitely looking forward to trying the warm season mix next year. I always hated inoculating the seed! Definitely looking forward to the results!
@@chefsharvestfarmNo. winter is not going to kill the barley grass, clovers and the brassicas. The flax. sunflowers and other annuals yes. Fair warning the warm season soil builder will get extremely tall. So you will probably need to terminate probably around waist high or sooner. But what it does to the soil is amazingly awesome the very first year. I’m doing several acres, so I let mine go so the sunn hemp can keep pumping nitrogen in the soil, break compaction and the millets feed the wildlife. It’s mid November in Maryland and the sunn hemp and sorghum sudan grass is 12’ tall and still green. I will disc it down when frost kills it and follow behind it with winter rye. Anywho, keep pumping out those videos brother. And happy holidays to you if we don’t chat before. 🤜 Here’s to a crispy live 2025. 🥂
@ thanks man! I was thinking, I’d probably be better off to plant the warm season mix in fall in my climate. Then it might actually winter kill. Yeah those big crops I generally crimp and then tarp to kill it which works good on my scale. thanks man! I appreciate your encouragement 👊
Good tour. Yep, winters coming. I have winter rye planted in all the garden beds and collected a lot of shredded leaves. All the lawn and garden equipment is put up for the winter and the snow blower is at the ready. I hate the cold 'n snow, but like the break from outdoor chores (double edged sword I guess). 😊
Thanks Mike 🙏 I am ready for a break too! I’ve barely taken a day off in 10 years. Definitely gonna try and take a little time off this winter.
@@chefsharvestfarm Take a break - you've deserved it (and then some) !!! 👍

Great video! Will you be growing still in the high tunnels throughout the winter?
Thank you 🙏 I’ll harvest what’s in there in the next week or two probably. Then I’ll get them prepared for January planting. I find nothing grows well until the hours of daylight start getting longer.
I'm new to watching your channel enjoyed the information today. Question where can I buy the cover roller at time: 6:57? I need some of these. Thank you!
Thank you! I happy you’re here 🙏 I bought this one off Amazon for like $200. The handle broke once and I replaced it. But if I could do it again I would probably go to a local pool company and see if they have a heavy duty one. It’s kind of challenging to know the quality when shopping online.
