If anyone is considering an electric fence to keep ground hogs, rabbits, deer and squirrels out, consider getting a dachshund or 2. They were bred to protect gardens and will naturally do it. They are very good at chasing away most wildlife , even underground pests.
Taking care of a dog is a huge commitment of both time and money… setting up an electric fence takes half a day and you never need to do anything again… dogs require daily care… that would be a poor recommendation for most people in my opinion…
@chefsharvestfarm To each their own, I guess I just like dogs, and it's a historically proven method. If you don't want to worry about pets and like messing around with more modern solutions, then yeah, definitely. Especially if you want to be able to leave for a couple weeks at a time. I'm mostly speaking to the normal homesteader who tend to have chickens and other livestock that require far more attention than a dog or 2 that most people get anyway for companionship.
@ sure by all means, if you want all the responsibility that comes with dogs. And a solution that’s only effective when the dogs are present. I’m all about efficiency, maximizing profitability, and minimizing labor. Your suggestion doesn’t check any of those boxes for me in my context.
@chefsharvestfarm you literally have a dog....Also you aren't a homesteader so you don't understand. Also these things called kids exist, i get you dont have them, but objectively the majority of farmers/homesteaders do. Like I said I'm not saying this for you. I grew up on family farms in North Carolina and after I left the military I worked on several in Texas. I have never in my life meet a farmer that doesn't have a dog. My point is get a dog that works for you if you are going to get one, not the other way around. That's being efficient.
👍👍Awesome video Chef Mikey!!! I'm just a home gardener with 14 beds on about 3000 sq.ft. BUT I've had the passion for over 50 of my 70 years. I was a cook in local area restaurants in 'a past life' but the low pay drove me to factory work where I worked for over 35 years. So the restaurant work and the garden passion draws me to you and your channel. Keep up the good work in both the gardens and the channel! 😊
When my hubs retired from the military after 28 years and 23 moves, we finally bought and moved to a home where I could put in a garden. When Covid lockdowns happened, it gave me a lot of time to really get serious about figuring out what to do. I am just now buttoning up everything for the winter. We have mulched the last of our tree leaves and I am optimistically looking forward to the spring. I really understand the anguish of losing your carefully crafted soil. Hello from Ireland. Just came across your video, very enjoyable indeed and will be watching loads more!! I live in rural Ireland and have a garden but expanding it for next year. I would love to do what you do but due to a car accident over 20 years ago its debilitating, bending is an absolutely killer and some days i cant near walk. I'm trying to get to no dig (till) next year and hopefully will have way more success than this year (back problems from the accident really hindered me for weeks at a time). I got a 40ft polycarbonate tunnel (hoophouse) but it grew mostly weeds this year 😂, still have tomatoes in it though. I also have peat soil which is very challenging to work with, trying to keep the moisture in! But hope to get a load of well rotted manure off my cousin which will help greatly 😊
That’s awesome! Wishing you the best 🙏 I just pay people to do all the bending over work. And generally speaking I find if I can get 2 people plus myself to do tasks like harvest carrots it’s not so hard on anyone. We harvest about $2000 worth of carrots in 4 hours and I paid 2 people $15/hr. So for $120 in labor all the carrots got harvested and I mostly just stood there with a hose and washed them. If you can manage people well it doesn’t have to be so physically demanding. I also find people willing to work in exchange for veggies!
I use the Protek (I think they only sell one brand) it’s the 15 mil with 6” drip emitters and .25 gallons per hour. And I rarely throw any out. It lasts for years for sure 👍
amazing story. im wanting to follow your foot steps. ive got bermuda grass i think. it survives me tarping after a month. ive got to try your method with the cover crop. do you have a recommended minimum time frame for each process when it comes to your order of tarping, cover crop, crimp & re-tarp, then lay compost to make the beds at the end? im going to find some heat tolerant lettuces & see if i can grow them successfully, long term. then ill be more confident to start selling it.
Ha! Nope! I probably won’t grow it anymore. It was a real good farmers market crop for me because people would buy it for juicing and I could charge $4/head. But now I’m mostly selling to restaurants and they don’t really care about fancy celery because they’re just using it for soups and stocks.
Generally speaking I do not use any amendments. I just use compost and cover crops. But the compost I buy is very well balanced and manure based. But sometimes if I’m not applying fresh compost I will use the neversink blend dry amendments which I purchase from seven springs farm supply out of Virginia.
Less than 1 acre. Each garden is about a quarter acre. But I have a new plot at the leased property that is tarped. I’m going to build beds with a bcs then cover crop it. So I’ll be lucky to get it into production for fall 2025. But at that point it will be like 3/4 of an acre probably.

If you can manage people well it doesn’t have to be so physically demanding. I also find people willing to work in exchange for veggies!
Looks awesome bro
Appreciate it!👊

Excellent, educational video. Thank you for sharing. What and how do you grow in the winter?
Thank you 🙏 mostly just lettuce arugula and spinach in the winter.
Keep up the great work, and keep hustlin baby! :))

Hey Chef! Just wondering what dripline you are using from dripdepot - is it driptape with prepunched holes? Ty in advanced!
I use the Protek (I think they only sell one brand) it’s the 15 mil with 6” drip emitters and .25 gallons per hour. And I rarely throw any out. It lasts for years for sure 👍
Awesome Great Job!! 🤩
Thank you! 😁
I love it! 😀

Great video!

amazing story. im wanting to follow your foot steps. ive got bermuda grass i think. it survives me tarping after a month. ive got to try your method with the cover crop. do you have a recommended minimum time frame for each process when it comes to your order of tarping, cover crop, crimp & re-tarp, then lay compost to make the beds at the end? im going to find some heat tolerant lettuces & see if i can grow them successfully, long term. then ill be more confident to start selling it.
Thank you 🙏 check out this video. I think it has the info you’re looking for ua-cam.com/video/QL7uFaYtrWo/v-deo.htmlsi=yNl0bBNUJLEWd4xb

Hi ok great video
Thank you 🙏 Hi 👋 thanks for dropping a comment! I appreciate it 🙏
Mikey, I saw that your celery plug source closed, do you have another source you can recommend?
Ha! Nope! I probably won’t grow it anymore. It was a real good farmers market crop for me because people would buy it for juicing and I could charge $4/head. But now I’m mostly selling to restaurants and they don’t really care about fancy celery because they’re just using it for soups and stocks.
Mary Jane at end of video, creme da la creme!!!
@@QuiChiYang2 yeah buddy 🙌
What did you use for your cover crop?
I’ve used everything imaginable over the years. But if you’re looking for a recommendation check out greencover.com/
What amendments do you use in your no till compost beds
Generally speaking I do not use any amendments. I just use compost and cover crops. But the compost I buy is very well balanced and manure based. But sometimes if I’m not applying fresh compost I will use the neversink blend dry amendments which I purchase from seven springs farm supply out of Virginia.
@ awesome my man! Thanks for the info 🙏 you’re killing it!
@ heck yeah! Thanks Chef 🙏
So how many acres total are you farming now including the leased land?
Less than 1 acre. Each garden is about a quarter acre. But I have a new plot at the leased property that is tarped. I’m going to build beds with a bcs then cover crop it. So I’ll be lucky to get it into production for fall 2025. But at that point it will be like 3/4 of an acre probably.
You ARE a HUSTLER,BABY!!!

hey, how much do you make growing that weed ?
Never sold any 🤣🤣🤣 I just consume it. I pretty much make it all into edibles.
@@chefsharvestfarm can you do a piece how you make into edibles ? Thanks man !!!
@ I don’t know. I’d like to find out. I’d love to make those types of videos but I don’t want to end up in UA-cam jail 🤣
@@onefamilys4299 chef Mikey, don’t risk your legal enterprise by beating your drum. Keep it down low! It’s not good to risk everything. Just release the need to pump that storyline.
