Narawntapu - Trail Running at the Beach!
I love nothing more than the Tassie winter!
After a quick stop for some pastries, we headed up to Narawntapu National Park on Tasmania's north coast for a little weekend adventure. We'd planned to start at Spring Lawn and run right around to Badger beach and back but my sore foot and low pain threshold turned us around shortly after Copper Cove. Still a great morning out in a beautiful part of the world though!

Exploring Cradle Mountain - Dove Lake
Переглядів 33928 днів тому
Now that it's mid-summer and baking here in Brisbane, I'm finally getting around to finishing a bunch of videos I made last winter in Tasmania. For my annual birthday hike, we set off around Dove Lake then climbed up to the cradle 'face track' via Lake Wilkes. From there we circled around over Hanson's Peak and back to the carpark, all in rather enchanting winter conditions.

It's finally time to stop training and start racing. Well, 'racing' is a bit of a stretch but technically it's a race so I'll allow it. Enjoy the stunning surrounds and fun vibe of the Ultra Trail Kosciuszko (50km)!

Having (only just) ticked of my first Ultra (UTA 50) earlier this year, I've decided to knuckle down and implement a slightly more structured training plan for my next event in November - The Kosci 50 by UTMB. So I got Chat GPT to whip me up a schedule and now I have 9 weeks to implement it and hopefully have a stronger, less painful race!

Hiking the TMB while UTMB is on!

Last September we traveled to France to trek the iconic TMB (Tour du Mont Blanc) route. Well, mostly anyway, We actually did a self-guided shortened version that the tour operator calls 'TMB Highlights' - apparently this means you get to hike all of the best bits, and shorten the trip by taking a couple of busses along the way. www.thenaturaladventure.com/tours/france/tour-du-mont-blanc-highlig...

My 2nd trail race, first of this distance and first time trying to film it! Part of the Ultra Trail Koscioszko event (actually the shortest race in it), the 27km course runs up the Thredbo valley before climbing to the 1937 metre Eagles nest. From there it's a punishing descent straight back down the hill to the finish line at Friday Flat. Details of the event are here: kosciuszko.utmb.world
Fastpacking the Cooloola Great Walk in 2.5 Days

2 years ago I hiked the CGW from South to North. After hurting my feet on day 1, they didn't really recover and I spent most of the rest of the trip pushing along with a sort of grim determination. I decided that 'sometime' I'd come back and see if I could do it better. And now is that time. Going from North to South this time (so I could stay at my preferred campsites mostly) I ran/walked/shuf...
Australian Hiking - Mount Greville - "Swimming In Our Own Filth"

For reasons unknown even to ourselves, Luke and I headed down to Mount Greville in the middle of an Aussie heatwave. The hike is beautiful, passing through lush forest, deep gorges and some classic Australian bush while featuring expansive views around the scenic rim. Just a word of advice - do it in Winter!

My first hike up to 'the Steamers' in Main Range National Park was rather ill-fated. With my trusty tracker Rob I headed out to do an easy overnight circuit only to find the upper reaches of the trail virtually impassable due to widespread growth of Gympie Gympie - the 'Stinging Tree' that can be quite dangerous due to the massive amount of pain it can inflict at the slightest touch. Nice work mate , can’t wait to do this one 😊
Enjoy! There are some great spots up there.
How did you only have 6 kg? Where is your tent? Where’s your sleeping bag? Where is your food and water?
I have some pretty light gear. Osmo 1p tent: ~850g Macpac sleeping bag ~450g Thermarest (3/4 size) ~500g Tiny stove ~50g 1kg water - I only carried 1L of water at a time (as I knew there water at each campsite). Maybe 1.5kg food (a couple of freeze dried dinners plus muesli bars etc) You can see in the video I wore the same clothes the whole way and just had 1 change of clothes for night time plus some extra socks. Oh and a lightweight puffer which doesn't weigh much and also doubles as a pillow for sleeping. I didn't take any rain gear as the forecast was generally good and it wasn't cold so I knew even if I got wet it would just be uncomfortable rather than dangerous. I Made the video just with my phone so no extra cameras or anything, and just a small power bank that had just enough capacity for 2 - 3 recharges of the phone. A pretty minimal first aid kit. And not much else! For a longer hike, or in different weather the pack weight would have to go up but in these conditions I judged anything else to be unnecessary!
Did you end up using your poles? 😊
Yeah, mostly on the long descent to the valley, and the first part of the climb back out.
@TheAdventurousBen cool. I'm considering getting some myself
@ defo worth it depending on the course IMO.

Awesome work! Doing my first 25km trail run in March.
Nice one and good luck!
Haha, just watched your UTMB 50 vid and saw you had also done the Pamir. (I rode it on my way from UK to Aus) good video and brought back memories. Thanks
Haha wow that’s great. Just looked at your channel and saw the ‘10 highest peaks’ vid. I went and did the ‘16’ (over 2 days) down there last year too 😅.
Thanks mate, good to see a true account of your day. Want to do this in 2026, long road to getting fit
Thanks mate. Spend a bit of time on the stairmaster and you’ll be ok I’m sure 🤣
Thanks for sharing your race with us. I was driving one of the shuttle buses in the morning and evening. Next year hope to run too.
Thanks for shuttling! That’s an early start. Oh and good luck for next year.
Congrats Ben! I did the 30 was epic!
Thank you, and congrats on the 30!
Great video mate!

Great overview of your adventure. I particularly agree your view on the descent from eagles nest; hideous and yet kinda essential for the experience!

That rock you sat on at 8:57 was a god send to me! Outstanding race mate!
Thank you! I think it saved a lot of runners.
Congrats!
Thanks 🙏
Loved the updates! Very relatable to us 'weekend warriors'! All the best for the race!
@@rivermax82 thanks!
You got this! Thanks for sharing your journey so far :)
🙏 Thank you!
Awesome stuff mate! like you i started my trail running journey kind of recently, doing the 27 kosci last year as well, hated it so much im doing the 50 this year. Wish you all the best in your preperation and your run!. Keen to see where your journey takes you!
Thanks mate. I typed a response to this 2 weeks ago and apparently didn’t hit ‘send’ - how did you go yesterday?
@ I finished which was a win, had a small surgery two weeks ago so it was looking like I wasn’t going to be able to take part, but I got the all clear from my gp on Wednesday. I think the two weeks in bed took its toll though as something on my knee went on the way up dead horse gap. From there it was a long slow waddle to the finish. Felt good not get over the line though. How did your day go for you?
Oh wow yeah not an ideal situation. Well done for overcoming it and getting it done. As for me - everything went pretty well. Didn’t get the time I wanted (not even close 😅) but didn’t have any big issues or anything. We 50k runners got the best of the weather too!
@@TheAdventurousBen Oh thursday was a great wasnt it haha, a few friends had done either the 100 or the miler and they looked like drowned rats coming over the finish. happy you had an enjoyable race mate! looking forward to your next one 💪
30km without cramps sounds like a big win. Bodes well for race day. I've never tried Tailwind. Is it mostly sugary carbs?
Yes on the sugary carbs. And thanks I’m happy with the progress!
Nice to see you adapt and be flexible with your training. If I was you, I wouldn't bother posting anything about weight, it has almost no bearing to your training or these videos.
@@joshg6et98 thanks. You’re right it’s one of those things that seems important until you realise that it just isn’t 🤷♂️
@TheAdventurousBen Yeah man, weight always fluctuates unless you're really focusing on it, which almost nobody is. Training like you are is much more important and you're doing really well. Looking forward to seeing your improvement.
I slept in a shipping container once that had a big padded church pew in it. I wedged a big rod in the door so I couldn't be locked in & slept on the church pew. Super comfy.
That’s a good fun! Excellent 😅
Certainly sounds like the long run was a tough session! I had a couple of questions/comments. (I am no expert so feel free to ignore) 1. Are you using HR or HR Zones to gauge the intensity of the session? I have found it much easier to get through training blocks and managing fatigue as it is all built into the HR. As you fatigue you will have to slow down to keep your HR in range. You are still getting the workout but reduce the risk of overtraining. This has been a game changer for me! I have been able to significantly increase my mileage and time on feet without any injuries compared to previous years where I would just go by 'feel'. I have been doing the MAF style training and now combining that with 80/20 (80% Z2 and 20% higher intensity). 2. For the Leg Gym sessions have you thought about doing them on the same day you run. I have heard a few Ultra runners recently say they now do their Leg days in the Gym on the same day as their tempo run (ie Run in the AM and Gym in the PM). This can allow similar volume of training but with an extra recovery day for the legs. Anyways keep up the good work!
Hey sorry I’m so late on this one. 1. Yes I have my zones set up on my Garmin watch and am good at sticking to it at least early on in a run. I do often aim to maintain the pace towards the end though which can bump me into zone 3 for example. Basically I could do better at this. 2. It hadn’t occurred to me but I think it’s a great idea. I’m going to see if I can work this into my routine over summer!
Oh and thank you 🙏
Glad you are ok!
@@diwu7632 thank you! 🙏
Great video, how scary/technical woukd you say the scrambling sections are
There's only one section: ua-cam.com/video/Xm9Wsaa3Dfw/v-deo.html that has "real" exposure and some other parts where it feels a bit airy. If you're comfortable with scrambl-ey terrain and have a head for heights I'd think it's fine overall though.
Good luck! How often are you planning on posting your videos? I am curious to see how you plan unfolds.
Thank you 🙏 I’m posting the next one this week and will be each 2 weeks from here on. Already learned a few things in the first two weeks too ;)
@@TheAdventurousBen Awesome, looking forward to it. I am also in Brissy and starting on my Ultra journey. Did the Guzzler 50km this year and am going to aim for the 100 next year.
Good luck with the training. I think we have a few things in common, not least of all being middle aged 😅 I've already run my one ultra for this year, but I've since been using ChatGPT to write my training plans for some shorter road races.
Be careful trying to lose weight and gain performance this close to your race, the two are generally mutually exclusive training goals. Concentrate on good diet, injury prevention and getting the kms in. If you lose weight that's fine and a nice byproduct. Oh and remember to KICK ASS.
Thank you! 🙏
Are gaiters needed for mt barney
Not on the usual trails. Probably yes if you're planning one of the less frequently traveled routes though as they can get overgrown.
Thank you
Outstanding effort mate. Well done. 😃
@@BlackshacksBushcraft thank you 🙏
Is it called Montserrat after the famous Catalan mountain? Serrated Mount..does it make sense?
I don't know if that's it but it would make sense - the mountain (Barney) viewed from here sort of looks like a serrated edge to me!
Nice video thanks! Good to see more info on local bushwalks.
Good stuff I was there doing my 2nd 100 & ,well I finished & will try again next year not to finish at 1am into Sunday.
Nice one! I’d call any finish at that distance a pretty big win 💪
Nice one. 50k is not to be sniffed at or sniffed up either. Maybe I'll join you for the next one. Maybe...
Thanks - see you there!
Nice job. Kinda surprised with the congestion, I started in the last group and we had no stopping this year - a touch slow crossing one of the water crossings in the deep gully, but otherwise only stopping to catch the view or wish for a new set of legs.
Nice ride, I"ll check it out one day,,,,,,,soon.
That looks so peaceful i have to do it. Were there many people on the tracks?
I've been up the SE ridge twice now and didn't see many other either time. You can expect a few people on or near the summit and on the South (peasants) ridge though.
Awesome stuff dude! Balls of steel. Which alltrails map did you use (if you used one?)
Thank you! Ah I didn't use a route but I did have a route description from some website - sorry I can't remember where I got it now.

Great run. I also did 27km it was good to see the run again through a runners eyes
Nice, well done us!
What size fastpack did you use?
It’s the 30L
Awesome I'm looking at the new 40L. What tent/sleeping bag did you stuff into the 30L.
@@benchambers1974 I reckon the 40 would be the go for anything longer than this but the nice thing about these is the adaptability of the roll-top (can be larger or smaller depending on your load). I’m using a Nemo Hornet 1p, Macpac firefly 200 and a half-sized thermarest.
Thanks Ben! I'm looking for a 40l pack that has a running vest style shoulder harness system. There's a few more on the market these days.
Enjoyed yr vid mate, would've appreciated insights on the more practical aspects of the hike, such as water sources, info on camp site setup & tips on 'not what to do'. cheers
