When the east coast rains finally eased up, I headed our to snatch a quick overnight hike. At the western boundary of Mount Barney National Park, this route sees less traffic than the more famous nearby trails.
The trail is access via the Cleared Ridge carpark, at the end of a pretty rough 4wd track.
Unsurprisingly, the creeks were swollen and the bush was (very) overgrown, so that half the time was spent bush-bashing up the ridgeline to Montserrat lookout itself.
The campsite is just a few metres below the summit, which makes it easy to get up for the sunrise.

I hate how people overseas say Australia has no real mountains . They are not very big but we do have them . Mount Barney is definitely a pretty mountain .
awesome content mate, you have inspired me to give these local spots a go!
Awesome, thanks a lot. Hope you find this trail in better condition!
great video, thanks Ben. Looked pretty overgrown in some parts!
Thanks Jacqui! Yes it was my first time over that way but we'd had a lot of rain leading up to that weekend so I guess it isn't always that bad.
I enjoyed this one mate, wouldn’t mind checking it out for myself. I’m looking to do my first overnight hike soon was thinking Lower Portals but maybe just go to Mt Nebo.
Thanks! Yeah I'd do lower portals when it's warm and cool down with a swim!
The lower portals hike is surprisingly difficult, but the canyon at the end is amazing.
For an easier overnight hike I can recomment Mount Bithongabel on the Toolona circuit. COINCIDENTALLY I have a video on my channel about, but even so its a great first overnight hike in my opinion :)
Is it called Montserrat after the famous Catalan mountain? Serrated Mount..does it make sense?
I don't know if that's it but it would make sense - the mountain (Barney) viewed from here sort of looks like a serrated edge to me!
Ben, thanks for the video - what website did you get your track notes from?
Hey David, I made notes from Alltrails.
I think read the same directions so am glad I've seen you reality test it. Was it hard to find your way without a clear track?
Hey Brad. The navigation wasn’t too bad - the directions say that you follow the ridge up to the campsite so even without a clear trail to follow you sort of know where you have to go. The route I took down the other side (to the confluence) was slightly better defined so not too hard.
Just remember to wear trousers not shorts!
@@TheAdventurousBen yes I think I'll wear gaiters after watching this!
@@foxtonstreet I wish I had!
