  • My first hike up to 'the Steamers' in Main Range National Park was rather ill-fated. With my trusty tracker Rob I headed out to do an easy overnight circuit only to find the upper reaches of the trail virtually impassable due to widespread growth of Gympie Gympie - the 'Stinging Tree' that can be quite dangerous due to the massive amount of pain it can inflict at the slightest touch.
Aaaaannd... I touched it. Ouch. Luckily just a couple of fingers but it stopped me in my tracks for a few minutes and took hours to subside.
We tried to find a way around but everywhere we looked, we found more G.G, eventually making the decision to just go home instead!
Might have another crack at this one in the cooler months - perhaps with a decent pair of gardening gloves...

Gympie Gympie... did you know it's nickname isn't stinging tree? it's suicide plant. Apparently the pain can last for months, and can be triggered by touching and cold water, oh well, their is nothing wrong with realizing that the southern Gympie Gympie colony is a place to avoid. Great video also!

Didn’t know but I can believe it! I got off pretty lucky, could have been a whole hand, arm or whatever…

Hello Ben I have failed the steamers walk before it's difficult to navigate. I finally found the way though after a couple of attempts let me know if you would like a guide.
