You HAVE to fight him to progress through the Game.
There's guilt but there's also joy. Sif is with his master now, way I see it, Sif wanted to see if you are worthy enough to travel the abyss, he fights valiantly, you prove your worthy, he dies peacefully knowing you will be safe, and he will be with his master soon.
After I get the ring during first playthrough each consecutive Ng+ I don't kill him.

I'm playing Dark Souls for the first time after watching a livestream of the game. I didn't pay attention to how Sif handled the sword at the time, but now knowing that Artorias was left handed, I realized that when Sif picks up the sword, she flips it around so the blade is on her left side.
Sif fights left handed because Artorias fought left handed.

Artorias actually lost to manus because of sif funilly enough his arm was shattered blocking a blow meant for sif and he had to give up the shield to protect sif meaning he fought against the abyss with 1 hand and no shield.

Yup, and his shield is arguably the best in the game, able to tank hits from the toughest bosses with enough stamina. Artorias would have obliterated us if he hadn't abandoned his shield to save Sif. Granted, he would have probably beat Manus beforehand.

Artorias is the ultimate badass to me, not only does he beat the ass of every undead that comes his way the first time he fights them.
he does it fucking handicapped, doing flips, spins & shit with an entire broken arm.

Damn it. I was hoping there was a way to complete the game without hurting Sif. I actually stopped playing 2/3 through the battle when she starts limping and making sloppy attempts at attacking. I haven’t played since… My wife and I rescue dogs (and have been for the past 15 years). We currently have 9 in our home as of writing this. 2 Belgian Malinois (1 male, 1 female), A German Shepherd (female), A Rhodesian Ridgeback (male), 2 Pit Bulls (both female), A boxer (male), An ebony Chow Chow (female) and a Presa Canario (male). Both of the Belgians are “retired” military dogs and the Shepherd came from the PA State Police. I know it sounds sappy, but the bond between a human and their dog can run deeper than family ties ever could. The thought of Sif guarding her owner’s resting place was such a display of loyalty and love that I literally couldn’t find it in myself to harm her. I guess I’ll never finish the game because even if it is just a game, I can’t bring myself to do it. I could care less about humans because they can protect themselves, communicate, etc., but dogs can’t. I’d let 100 people die to save my dogs and I’ve already witnessed that my dogs are willing to give their lives for me. We had an idiotic methhead attempt to break into our home at 02:15 just after Christmas. He did he make it in through the window, but was immediately met by roughly 1,000 pounds of pissed off dogs. He reportedly needed 328 stitches and remained in hospital for 2 weeks due to his injuries. The asshole stabbed my Malinois 7 times, but she never even whimpered and absolutely refused to let go of the intruder. I apologize for the lengthy comment, I got a little worked up thinking back to the initial encounter with Sif.
Hope your dogs are safe especially the one that got stabbed.

@Jackson Bauer, if you are playing the game on PC, perhaps you could try a save editor or some kind of mod that allows you to get the ring you are supposed to get after fighting Sif? I am not familiar with those, but I'm pretty sure it can be done. You have a beautiful soul! Love and respect to you and your beloved ones from México.

But why is sif holding Artorias sword in the protection circle when he was still alive and fighting us with it before... this Sword have like 5 or 6 different variants and i love the weapon
Artorias was dead. The DLC happened a long time ago and you kill him There. Sif was at Artorias's grave and that sword is his sword. So no Artorias wasn't Alice when you fight Sif. Also Sif is a girl

I'm at my first playthough.
After the bell gargoyles I didn't know were to go so I kinda just rushed the darkroot garden and beat the butterfly and sif. Now I get this recommended to me and I feel bad, lol.
I mean the chasm of the abyss is kinda an endgame DLC. So I'm pretty sure it's super tough to just stumble upon this without looking how to in the first place.
If I remember right if you hold artorias' sword in the left hand it's more powerful or grants some sort of special move, I forget which it is.

Sif wasn't going to let you because Sif knew that you might get corrupted by the abyss
She is trying to protect you. She watched Artorias succumb to the Abyss and become a twisted, tormented, shell of his former self. She knows that if you take the ring, you'll put yourself in the same position, and you could become an even more powerful puppet for the abyss than Artorias was. Not only does she not want that to happen to you, but she's also protecting the world from the abyss the only way that she can. Sif is a good girl, she is best doggo.

In all honesty this makes sense. As he remembers you saving him in the abyss and obviously capable enough to survive. I think Sif should be confident in the undead returning there again.
Man Sif’s story is so depressing, she really only wanted to prevent what happened to Artorias from happening to anyone else :-(
When I first played the DLC, Sif actually saved me during the Manus fight. I felt extra horrible when I finally had to fight him. Definitely the most depressing and moving moment in any game for me.

And for unlock the Dukes Archives I need kill the 4 kings. And need the covenant of Artorias for kill the 4 kings, and finally I need kill Sif to get the Covenant of Artorias
@@pedrozoia5426 I'm not sure what to say back when I was playing it I knew of some way bypassing that but I can't for the life of me remember it was probably with glitchs
But Sif chose to fight even after realizing you saved him - he probably would have let you get the item you needed if he realized it was necessary to beat the abyss
Or maybe he realized and was trying to stop you from meeting the same fate as his master, either way his loyalty to Artorias comes first

Damn, i've been playing this game for over five years now and i never knew about this! Thanks for sharing, i can't believe i never discovered this. I always felt bad during that fight and wished their had been some way to avoid it, now i see you can't exactly do that but you CAN ally with him so this is awesome news, again thanks for sharing.
I think artorias tried to block a attack and it broke his arm forcing him to use his off hand
I love how in every souls game basically, you fight these legendary heroes and stuff, but you only win because they are nerfed as shit, artorias got his main hand broken, malenia in elden ring is basically dead, made mostly of prosthesis and being consumed by scarlet rot which caused her to become blind, gwyn at the end of ds1 is not nearly as strong as he was when he took down the dragons, etc.
Artorias is the one that kills me the most. Wish we could get curb stomped by prime Artorias just once

Knight Artorias is an absolute chad, he is the embodiment of "yeah, im actually using my weak hand and im still kicking your ass"
so you have to first rescue him in the dlc then fight him in the game to get the alternate cutscene? am already on ng+ i had saved him and summoned him in the fight against manus but in ng+ the cutscene didn't play
Did you save/summon him in ng+? The actions you take in ng have no effect on ng+ so if you do the steps in ng then fight sif again in ng+ you won’t get the cutscene. You would have to do the dlc in ng+ as well before you fight him.

Obviously it has to be in the same playthrough.. otherwise you could just fight the soul of cinder immediately after starting NG+.. (because you already got rung the bells, got the Lord vessel, and beat the other boss souls in your previous playthrough).
Btw "Sif" is an Arabic word it means "Sword".
The reason Sif wanted to kill you still was not because he didn't like you but in fact he wanted to save you because he thought you would go to the abyss and get consumed by the darkness....just like Artorias. He didn't want you to suffer the same fate Artorias did, the howl he did was basically telling you to forgive him. I'm sorry that I added additional feels to this 😢
Well, someone saved him as a pup sacrificing himself. Now you killed him and then you realize he was only fighting you to prevent you from reaching the same fate.
Dark souls in general pulls A LOT of inspiration from the manga Berserk. Maybe a little TOO much. Artorious being one of the biggest inspirations. The parallels between him and Guts are almost identical. Man fights tooth and nail against the darkness and loses an arm trying to protect someone they love. Also Artorious’s armor and the Berserk armor share a a lot of similarities as well..

Having to kill Sif is the worst thing the devs have ever done (and they've done some really terrible things to my emotional well being, especially in DS2)
@TheGhostInitiative hmmm... considering artorias using his left arm against darkness is interesting. Left hand was considered to be linked to darkness/evil, as left in latin means Sinister.
Fun fact, you get this cutscene regardless of whether or not you do that bullcrap. I have never seen any other cutscene aside from this one, you need only to have the DLC installed. So idk why people are calling this an alternate scene when it isn't at all.

I really really hate that they didn't just make the boss fight get skipped. It makes no sense. It's like they were afraid people would be upset you couldn't get Sif's soul. But it would be so much better in every way if he just gave you the abyss ring and then left.

Awesome video, 5 years later and it's still useful. I was trying to find Sif because I kept getting demolished by Manus and none of the wiki guides actually said or showed where s/he was. Turns out i didn't need her tho as I kept dying even if i did summon him in and I was able to beat Manus by myself
When I read “how to save Sif” I was thinking that there is a way to save doggo but I remember it’s Dark Souls
I just thought about it but, If you decide to become a darkwraith you cannot get this cutscene (unless ng+) You need to place the lordvessel on alter to unlock duke's for DLC pendant but you also need the abysswalker ring to go down to kaathe to place the vessel.
If you agree with frampt instead and place it, kaathe never appears. It's cannon, darkwraiths are too evil to be emotional!
Yup. I have a couple friends that I replay souls with like once a year and they never play it outside of that co-op run. The most recent time one of them wanted to try the sif cutscene for the first time and the other one wanted to become a darkwraith for the first time. I was like “sorry boys, but if you want to do everything together, then one of you is not getting what you want” lol

My eyes started to get watery after sif limping. After the battle, i bow down properly and put my original starting game weapon among the sword. I bow down for the last time and warp. Then i stop playing like a month after that.
Will always be the saddest story I ever seen in Dark Souls. Poor Sif knew you, respected you too. Sif didn't want to kill you.... but Sif also couldn't let you pass... not without a fight.

It could be his arm broke therefore he had to choose between the shield and the sword. Since the sword is more valuable in the long run he probably left it with sif to guard sif and the shield.

Sif played a major role in allowing me to take out Manus in one attempt. If I could have skipped the boss, I would have. After the DLC bosses, Sif felt more like an execution than a boss, and I just made sure to end it quickly.

- Heartlessly murders Sif not knowing anything about the lore
- Watches the detailed lore on UA-cam
- Takes a break from the game and goes to the church
- Adopts a husky
- Opens the game again
- Reaches Sif
- Doesn't initiate the fight
- Leaves the game forever

That's it! I'm not gonna fight him anymore! Instead I'll use Darkshell to get the ring, anything to keep Big Boi alive!
really wish you could skip this boss fight if you do go through the trouble of the DLC before fighting Sif, hes not really that hard of a boss and doesnt give you much other then the abyss ring, i just think they could have made it so the wolf just drops the ring when it recognizes you then stays there for the rest of the game
