If you do fight Sif without the DLC, he’ll think you’re just an invader, trespassing his masters grave, and he’ll do anything to protect it.
Once you save him in the Abyss and kill Manus, once you enter the arena, Sif will think again you’re a trespasser, but once he sniffs you and gets your scent, even then he remembers that you were the one that saved him and fought Manus. Knowing that you need the Covenant of Artorias to fight the Four Kings, he lets out a mournful howl, unwillingly picks up his masters sword and prepares to test you to see if you’re ready.
Its amazing how Dark Souls can tell a story without words.

Why would he kill you or risk to be killed himself, just to 'test' you?
No, he wants to stop you. Prevent that anyone interferes with the abyss, so it won't spread again and that no one might suffer the same fate as Artorias, who met his bitter end there, completley consumed by the void and hollowed out. It deeply saddens him, but if he has to kill you to prevent you from treading this path, it's worth it to him and the right thing to do.

I like to think that, once Sif realizes it's you, the person who saved them, they're no longer defending Artorias's grave for the sheer sake of defending it, Sif knows you have no bad intentions, but they want to keep you from the ring so you don't risk meeting the same fate that Artorias did.

I always think of it as humanity from other unlucky bastards who were not worthy to take the ring from Sif. Just like the rats in the depths, he also needs to feed. Humans and hollows are just the most willing to risk themselves to enter the domain he protects.

Artorias is not Sif's master, he's Sif's friend and companion.
It's because I rescued him in the DLC. You can find him just before you fight the last boss. So if you rescue him before you've done this fight, the cutscene will be this one because he recognises you. Artorias' armour makes no difference. He only fights you to stop you getting the Abyss Walker ring and facing the same fate that Artorias did. It's very sad really.

That's why I ended up dying to Sif about six or seven times. Once the limping starts I had to just step away and ask "Seriously? They're really gonna force me to kill this poor creature? There's no other way?"

@@IHateYTIdentifiers in its defense, I had to look up how to jump in order to beat the Bed of Chaos, so sometimes a tutorial like that is necessary.
@@MWilmott yeaaah I'm calling bullshit. how tf did you get to bed of chaos without knowing how to jump ? Blighttown alone makes you do couple of jumps. Also, you don't need to jump against bed of chaos, it's just a simple drop.
@@stansarecancer2175 when I began my very first playthrough, my best friend told me "Get the Master Key as your gift. You have to have the Master Key." Because of that, I was able to skip most of Blighttown and went straight to fighting Quelaag without fighting that big toothy dragon thing whose name I forget. Never learned to jump in Blighttown because I never encountered those points where jumping was required.
@@MWilmott tbh I'm still having a hard time buying it because even after beating Quelaag (and bell gargoyles) you still need to go through at least Sen's Fortress and Anor Lando before going to Bed of chaos, both of which require some jumping. But I suppose stranger things have happened.

Tbh I think the fact that I was a Sorcerer and used Hidden Body to sneak past the archers in Anor Londo and the Electro-snakes in Sen's Fortress had a lot to do with the fact that I never had to jump prior to Bed of Chaos, but I assure you that I'm telling the truth when I say my dumbass never learned to lift my legs off the ground.
Nobody ever talks about how the chosen undead reaches out to comfort sif and she pulls away. That's the part that always gets me.
Chosen Undead is the sweetest MC! Except for maybe the Ashen One comforting the cleric girl outside the Seigward lift. lol

I unlocked this alternate cutscene, Actually Sif don't want to fight you because she remember you saved her from the abyss, so sad I cry when I watch this cutscene :'(
Yeah, but she also doesn't want to fight you if you don't unlock the cutscene. She wants to protect you, to prevent you from falling like Artorias did. She also recognizes that you are undead, meaning she only has one way to stop you: to fight.

Just now fought Sif right after defeating Manus together, this scene broke my whole heart and I was crying through the entire fight. This was my first time playing the dlc and I had no idea this was going to happen, my entire being is overcome with sorrow
I didn't know this scene existed. Really though, it just irritates me rather than making it seem sad, because we have no reason to believe that we HAVE to kill Sif to get the covenant, and yet he still fights you after showing that he recognizes you and doesn't actually want to kill you.

He wanted to be with his master and he saw you (the one who saved Sif and also relased artorias trapped soul from his corrupted body) defeating him as a good way to end his saddend fate. Technically you set him free twice.
honestly I always thought that he recognized the danger of the abyss, seeing what it did to his master and wanted to prevent the player from being corrupted like Artorias, even if it meant killing you himself

he is stricken because he smells his masters scent on you. he probably assumes that you fought his corrupt body or is reminded of artoisus sacrifice to save sif.
See this boss is still one of the most difficult soul bosses because the tears in your eyes makes it harder to see and move around
Did this fight recently with the extended cutscene, I did enough damage to make him limp and that just made it all the sadder seeing him hobble around and fall over trying desperately to stop what happened to Artorias happening to you...
One thing I noticed about sif is that as a boss fight, he/she breaks the convention of bosses getting harder as they are getting killed. Sif actually grows weaker as you defeat her/him.
They aren't some otherworldly being or a man who's trained years for the ultimate fight, they're just a beeg doggo trying to respect their dead owner... :(
I think the first reply might have a point. The human spirit is a powerful thing (and the monster spirit, I guess). Sif, while a strong and loyal doggo, is still just a dog. When she’s hurting, she gets weak. When humans are hurt, they can get weak, but they can also get pissed or resolute and kick into final gear to beat you.
When sif takes her paw off you the theme plays for a second, that just makes it even more sad...

im probably over thinking this but is there significance to Sif swinging the sword into a left handed holding position since it was artorias sword and he held it in his left hand and having its own special move set, hence Sif holding it as if left handed, as for significance or using the sword in its proper way. or im just over thinking it but when he pulls the sword out and swings it to the other side seems like its pointing to something
In lore artorias taught his moveset to sif so yeah your pretty much right

+EPR89 his right arm was broken sooo. And he uses his left hand when fighting you in the dlc. Notice how is other arm is just lanky sitting there. Well that was his shield arm whih im guessing broke from trying to protect sif when he was a puppy. And when you hold the sword from the dlc in your left hand it has a special moveset

So yeah, if any arm was broken, it was his shield am. The shield arm is generally not the dominant one.
And you cannot hold a weapon in your left hand. You can use it in one hand or in two, and petty much all weapons have special move-sets for two handed use. None of the variations of Artorias sword (normal, cursed or Abyss) have a "special" move-set for two handed use.
EPR89 If he is not left handed, then explain why Sif specifically switches the sword to the left. why in Darksouls 2 his sword has a special moveset when in the left hand. The only thing going for the idea of him being right-handed is when you fight him, and in that it's obvious his left arm is broken. If your dominant arm is broken you switch to your other arm. I'd like you to explain to me how it makes sense for him to be right handed?
One thing the rest of the games never recreated was the sorrow and mourning that fills us whenever we defeat a boss and learn more about them. Sif was a prime example, a majestic wolf who only wanted to protect us from the Abyss. Then there's Ceaseless Discharge, who sat quietly, watching over the corpse of his sister and their fallen home. Quelaag, guarding her sister who had taken in large amounts of poison and toxin to protect those under her care. Kirk was similar, he only wanted to collect Humanity to heal her suffering. This is why only the first game had so many Prepare to Cry videos dedicated to the bosses. Because they were consumed and used by the desperate attempts of those wielding the Lord Souls to further the Age of Fire.

Ben Glaser I feel like Gehrman In Bloodborne did as well as other bosses like Gasgoine and Lady Maria once you knew the lore, as well as a few others like Ebrietas. I will agree the DS2 mostly failed in that regard and that the Soul Of Cinder is the only one is DS3

One thing I’d like to point out is the chosen undead tries to reach out to sif as if to pet or try to calm him down. That shows that neither of them want to fight each other

Understanding the story always makes my eyes, tear up with this.
I like how the player character doesn't react aggressively and tries to reach out to Sif as a way to console them.
Gives a bit more flair to an otherwise blank slate you sort of project yourself onto.

I beat the game and dlc so i knew about sif and artorias, but have never seen this cutscene before. I actually cried a bit when sif let out that sad howl. Dark souls truly is a legendary game

Utsuho Reiuji That happens when someone kindles the bonfire you have last rested at. You can get over your limit that way. My personal highest was having 17 flasks at a bonfire I had only kindled once.
I noticed it too. At 2:32, he went from 19 to 20 Estus flasks. I only played the first Dark Souls on the 360, and have limited PvP / online experience with it. This led me to think that it comes from rating messages, but I'm not sure.

He can't just give it to you. He watched his best friend be overcome by the darkness, and he's protecting the grave and the covenant. He's honor bound and more than anything he's protecting you from the same fate as his friend.

Sif is the one boss that I always feel bad about killing. Doesn't matter if I'm playing as a stone-cold thief and murderer; when it comes to Sif, I always cry. Just recently picked back up the game after half a year, and this fight hit harder than usual; didn't help that my dog I've had for over half my life died a few weeks ago. RIP good doggos.

if you do the abyss walker dlc befor the sif fight when you go to fight him reconizes your scent as the one that set him free and is saddend yo fight you and.he does not go all out like he normalie would
