  • These days, we hear a lot about fasting. Intermittent fasting, time-restricted eating, and water fasting are just some of the many terms being thrown around in support of better health. And we can’t forget about the high-fat, ketogenic, and low-carb approaches that are gaining in popularity as well. Which one is best? What does it all mean for our longevity, brain health, and overall wellness? My guest on this week’s episode of The Doctor’s Farmacy is here to sift through the terminology and confusion around fasting.
    Dr. Valter Longo is internationally recognized as a leader in the field of aging studies and related diseases. Known as a “Guru of Longevity,” Dr. Longo is currently Professor of Biogerontology and Biological Sciences and Director of the Institute of Longevity of the School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, as well as Director of the Oncology and Longevity Program at IFOM in Milan. He is also the Scientific Director of the Create Cures Foundation and the Valter Longo Foundation. Valter is the author of an extraordinary new book, The Longevity Diet. The culmination of 25 years of research on aging, nutrition, and disease across the globe, it provides an easy-to-understand, accessible and implementable road map to living well longer through improved nutrition.

      @@Farlig69 Hey, good for you. I take a similar approach. Usually do OMAD but when water fasting I always aim for 3 days minimum and usually end up doing 3-5. Once I got a little carried away and didn't stop until day 22. Really didn't intend to go that long but as it turned out was very beneficial because it totally resolved a chronic skin condition. Enjoy the journey. Best regards!

      Not sure which videos you’ve been watching? He promotes animal, protein and animal fat. 100% of these longevity experts are vegan. Why is that? It’s because of science. Dr. Longo‘s diet is 100% vegan. Dr. David Sinclair, who is arguably the most prominent anti-aging expert in the history of humankind is vegan. He changed his diet to vegan, in the last few years after a preponderance of evidence against animal proteins and fats.

    After fasting the stomach shrinks a bit. When one restarts eating, he/she will get full with less food than before (in addition to reaching satisfaction and satiety with the simpler wholesomer foods than before due to taste buds reset). If one fasts twice a year, the reset of stomach size and taste buds becomes regular, so portion control is no longer necessary. Therefore, eating becomes more natural and satisfying because at that point no one has to experience mental anguish over portion control or stress about trying to estimate an 80% fullness point.

    • @Ritalie
      @Ritalie 3 роки тому +11

      @@Scottlp2 Dry fasting forces the fat to be converted into water. The fat in our body can actually be dissolved and turned into water, and this means, all the stored toxins in the fat, including pesticides, heavy metals, halides like bromine, drugs, are released from the body. Sweating, and dry fasting, both force toxins out of the fat cells. When you sweat a lot without drinking water, the body will begin releasing stored liquid reserves, along with all the toxins. Not drinking water is very important for short term detoxing. For long term fasting, it's obviously not practical. Sauna use, sweating, and dry fasting, can be combined for rapid detoxing. This is covered in a book called "Clear Body Clear Mind." Niacin (not fake niacin) dramatically accelerates the release of the toxins in the fat cells, which is why it causes flushing. The flushing goes away over time.

In seven months I had lost 40 Lbs along with the Diabetes type 2 and improved cognitive ability. Now, after five years of sedentary life (no fasting nor exercise) I've gained everything back (the 40 lbs + diabetes type 2), but feeling much worst than before. After my chemo experience with Cisplatin which so destroyed my GI tract, and having learned about the power of fasting I think that I could have just fasted and not had that poison injected directly into my bloodstream every week. This was forced fasting, being unable to keep down much food. I lost 33lbs in the seven weeks. I had stage 4 neck cancer and was put on simultaneous radiotherapy and chemotherapy. My Dr could not tell me how effective the addition of chemo was but estimated from "meta-anlayses" around 20% relative improvement in outcome. Had I known then what I know now, I would not have taken the poison, but just stopped eating for the 7 weeks, maybe sticking to supplements and broth. I find it hard to accept that having toxic platinum circulating in the body is a good idea, when you get so many benefits from just not eating.

    I have followed Longo since his work on mice with E.A.E in 2016 amazed me. At first, I had many credibility concerns about his FMD. I have spent countless hours studying his work on fasting, as well as Keto strategies and can now state I believe he is an extraordinary genius and long term (5-7 days) fasting(either Prolon FMD or a variation) is an extremely powerful healing modality, particularly for all things immune system related. In addition, it is wonderful for reducing risks of most common diseases. I have done five FMD's including a few small adjustments (somewhat less calories and less carbs as a % of calories, with terrific results! Thanks for the interview.

      @@rich3435 I allow myself 600 calories daily. Most importantly, only 10% or so can be protein in order to maximize "autophagy". Otherwise, minimal sugar and roughly 45% carbs and 45% healthy fats.
      Lower carb fruits(berries), simple soups (vegetable) and avocado is what I usually eat. Hope this helps.

      🤠We are living in the wild west of nutrional science. Nutrion has been more or less just a tool for government and the now the food industries just to sell s**t they call food! Almost everything we eat causes some kind of stress on our bodies and fasting is the best way to balance out the stress and help us live longer! Fasting mimicking is the next best thing and there are a lot of different ways to do a fasting mimicking diet. Do your own research and pick what fits you go for it!🤠

    I wanted to purchase his book for ages now and still hesitated for some reason. after this interview I did it straight away and it IS THE BEST PURCHASE IVE MADE SO FAR. Its not only informational but very stylish read full of interesting facts about Italian lifestyle that radiates wellness. I also greatly enjoyed the part where Longo describes how he was ridiculed at uni when he wanted to do biochem when he was a musician at that point. And look at him now! (as a struggling physician I found that part inspirational) Furthermore I LOVE how he is different to all of these Keto/paleo/drgundry/blabla gurus, because he purely speaks from scientific point objectively describing the facts without biased opinion. For those who critique the prolon fasting kits - funds going to charity and so does the book sales:)

      I don’t pay any attention to how much protein or carbs that I eat, when you feel great when you wake up you just know that your diet is working great for you. I also weigh myself everyday just to make sure I stay on track and if my weight does start to creep up I make small changes, if at 19 you are already thinking about staying in great shape and feeling great as you age then you are most likely going to have a healthy life without illness.

I’ve done over 36 hours now and I haven’t had one muscle cramp (they used to be really bad) when I water fasted. I did add a little bit of potassium and salt. I also had magnesium over the last three days. It really was wonderful not to get those terrible cramps. by about day 2, I was 4.3 in ketones. Being in ketosis kept my sugar from going down too low. It went down to 3.5 mmol per litre- 63 American. I didn’t have any symptoms so that was great I just feel weak, of course, and tired, but not hypoglycemic.
