    I love Dr. Fung! His videos started me on my journey two years ago through fasting to get rid of snacking. I then continued onto to a Keto diet, then onto Carnivore. Eleven months into Carnivore I am continuing to fast 16 to 18 hours every day. I now am weighing what I did in high school (at age 63). I feel like I have my life back. If it wasn’t for Dr. Fung and all the Keto and Carnivore influencers out there, I have doubts I would be where I am today. It’s never too late to start taking control of your health. Thank you for interviewing Dr. Fung!

      I don't follow influencers. The word makes me almost cringe. If by that you mean knowledgeable people like Dr Jason Fung, Dr Anthony Chaffee, then we're talking about health care professionals not influencers.

      I experienced this today. I ate my last meal between 4 5 PM. I walked 8 miles before the sun came up. Played pickleball from 9 to eleven thirty. After I showered. I just wasn't hungry. Forgot I drank a small Gatorade at PB. Ordered unsweetened electrolyte powder tomorrow. But I didn't eat until 2. Ate dinner at 5. I'll be good until tomorrow afternoon. I do no set times. I eat when I'm hungry. But in a 4 5 hour window. It just works out that way.

    I fasted for two weeks and had blood work done at the end of the second week. My Glucose went from 115 to 80. My triglycerides dropped over 100 to ~162; however, my cholesterol shot through the roof and now my doctor's nurse, who I have never spoken to, recommended a prescription for statins based this single situation. I'm slated for another test in a few months, but no way am I going on statins when the non-fasting test done less than a month earlier (higher triglycerides, higher glucose since I ate protein 3 hours before the test, much lower total chol + LDL and higher HDL) less than a month prior. I think the problem is doctors these days don't really know how the body works, don't have the latest study data in their purview, and don't know their individual patient's situations. They just look at numbers and make decisions based on the data in front of them without contextual awareness.

    • @mariad1151

    • @LauraB.335
      @LauraB.335 9 місяців тому +21

      Dr. Ken Berry says if you’re getting a blood test, to only fast for 12-14 hours beforehand, so don’t do an extended fast, because it can mess with all sorts of numbers.
      And you’re right about doctors not knowing how the body works or the big picture. First off, Dr. Berry talks about LDL in lower carb/keto/carnivore people where 1/3 decreases, 1/3 stays the same, and 1/3 increases. I’ve also heard Drs (maybe Ovadia or Bikman) talk about how statins are useless, except for maybe people who have already had a heart attack, and research is saying that higher cholesterol is protective, especially as one gets older. Not to mention, what is high is determined by mostly unhealthy people eating a SAD, so that could very well differ quite a bit in those eating lower carb. Also, I forget who said it, but I remember one doc saying statins address the wrong part of cholesterol if you’re trying to prevent heart attacks, and that the drug companies manipulated the numbers to make it seems as if they’re more effective than they are.

    • @ekondigg6751
      @ekondigg6751 9 місяців тому +27

      If someone has been fasting, or is LC/keto/carnivore, then they are in fat-burning mode. What the lab measures for cholesterol is actually lipoprotein nutrient transporters that also contain cholesterol. When in fat-burning mode, fat is packaged into LDL by the liver as a fuel source for your cells. So it's completely normal that in fat-burning mode LDL production goes high. If you want to get a lower measurement, just go out of fat-burning mode before the next test by eating a couple of high-carb meals the day before. Your body will switch to carb-burning mode so the liver will reduce LDL production and your doctor will be happy with the resultant lab test.

      I'm not a scientist, but it seems to make sense that your cholesterol/fats went up while fasting. If you are bringing fat out of the cells for energy, which happens while you are while fasting, is it surprising that there is more cholesterol being shuttled about?

    I started intermittent fasting 133 days ago after viewing several videos of Dr Fung. I have dropped from 196 lbs to 169lbs. My triglycerides went down from 370 to 80. My fasting blood sugar dropped from 112 to 98. My A1C dropped from 6.2 to 5.7. I have been doing a 16:8 IF regiment. I made subtle changes in terms of what I am eating such as using Stevia Select vs Splenda and using Prymal coffee creamer vs Coffeemate creamer. Those changes in the morning for coffee has decreased my insulin response I believe. I am 5’5” and am a busy physical therapist. I feel so much better and think I stopped the progression of becoming a type 2 diabetic. I can not thank Dr Fung enough for helping me understand how and why IF works. I am now empowered to change my health and well being and hopefully can be a motivator for my patients I work with.

This started changing because of urbanisation during the 20th century. Fun fact from our part of the world: one was never supposed to go outside before eating a little something as it was believed that it brings diseases, death and misfortune if you hear birdsong with an empty stomach. This was because the migrating birds were believed to spend the winter in the underworld.

    I have been following and reading everything from Dr Fung since 2013. I’ve been fasting at least 18:6 since 2013. In the beginning I was about 15# overweight and had an A1C of 6.0. I initially lost the weight by doing OMAD and lowered my A1C to 5.6. I am also a menopausal woman at 64 now so was going through the change back then. Fasting has become a lifestyle for me but my A1C has crept back up to 6.2 without the weight gain. I’m almost too thin now and am having difficulty lowering the glucose without losing too much weight. I exercise 30m a day. Low carb is really difficult. I’m stressing myself out trying to feed my family and lower my carbs at the same time. Can you give me any advice? If I fast until 1:00 each day and stops eating at 6:00 how low carb do I have to go? I am wearing a CGM right now and if I eat a high carb it will spike and stay there for a few hours so I know that I am not very insulin sensitive. Everyone is so focused on the weight loss aspect and I am here in the minority and can’t find any answers.

    Thanks Dr. Westman for challenging Dr. Fung on this issue. I understood what you were trying to do, and I read his whole book The obesity code, because I'm dealing with I believe hyperinsolemia and excessively overweight. I didn't have an issue with my sugar, but blood pressure was the issue, and a lot of inflammation, and water retention. So I knew something was wrong, I do think the carb count is still important to be mindful of, along with intermittent fasting so to speak, because it does count what you eat during the times you are feasting, and I get fasting is good to keep your insulin down, but when it's raised, what you're eating is super important.

    I first saw dr Jason Fung in 2018 when I started to fast. I was basically looking on any information how to do it, how long and how to break longer fasts. I follow him and bought his book The Cancer Code. I started carnivore back then because eggs are best foods to break longer fasts safely, recently I found Dr Westman and love his approach and professionalism and also the fact that he lives in North Carolina. My daughter bought small property in NC and we love it!

    I’ve been looking into fasting and trying out OMAD for a while. I have an inbody scale so I’m interested is seeing what the results will be over the next few weeks.
    I’m near Toronto and love Jason Fung. The early Christians/Jews fasted 2 days per week from sundown to sundown the next day. Isaish 58:8 says our health will quickly be restored with fasting

      Interesting
      Is it dry fasting? Because it is very similar to the Islamic fast,
      I am fasting our Islamic fast on monday and thursday from sundown to sunset,a dry fast of course we have two meals one at sunset and the other we can skip it if we want (before sundown)
      and I am getting good results my numbers are becoming more normal.

      @rozagalaway3278 Christian here who follows Christ. Our fasts are complete/dry fasts sunset to sunset I generally fast twice a week.
      When I was dry fasting for surgery, when it was put back I was told that I could have some black coffee the doctor was very surprised when I told him that I was perfectly okay with continuing the dry fast because I do so a minimum of once per week, though usually twice.

    Nice to see you again Amy. I signed up for the wait list. I think I could use support to stick to keto. Been straying with sweets and starches. And sure there are things in my life I'd like to change or achieve but have not been successful changing them yet. So don't think I am putting health as my focus to avoid them since health is important too. Just frustrated on many levels and sugar and starch are easy to get and a quick short term fix.

    Great biological information. However, he misses the addiction aspect. Food addiction is linked to a dopamine link to the process of eating. The addiction bypasses the biological switches such as ghrelin and leptin. Food addiction is associated with the experience. The taste, texture, and emotional links to food that soothes negative emotions such as depression, loneliness, etc.

    I generally fast intermittently on my carnivore diet (a large steak & eggs lunch generally) - Carnivore Diet leaders recommend to eat enough meat until you're satiated - These habits will (at least) [1] Lead you towards your optimised weight (from either direction); & [2] Improve your general metabolism & microbiome. At 58, I have lost ~26kg (from 130 to 104) with daily/moderate exercise in 4 months, on this diet. I had also been fasting whole days twice per week (Mon+Fri), but recently I've changed to (Thu+Fri) - A ~70hour fast! Perhaps this measure is too severe for this podcast, but reason is to experience autophagy benefits, which is supposed to kick in after 48 hours. 🐄

    I am concerned about fasting times in the elderly after hearing Dr. Donald Layman on with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon. He believes that the elderly (and I am 71) should not fast for periods longer than 24 hours and eat 4 meals a day because our weight loss may likely include lean muscle mass which will be hard to gain back. I lost weight quickly on keto when I first started 4 years ago but the amount included lean muscle mass which I could not afford to lose and it's taken time and work to regain it.
    There needs to be more emphasis about what are appropriate fasting periods for the elderly as well as the importance of protein for us rather than just weight loss.

      I am not able to fast because I used to starve myself. I would be too hungry if I had to fast. I've lost a lot of weight on carnivore and gotton off one diabetes tablets without fasting. I would encourage elderly people to eat more meat, and go low carb then fast a lot. Or at least they need to be monitored by doctors. You don't want falls, you don't want cracked heads from low blood pressure from fasting.

      I'm no doctor but the idea of eating 4 meals a day.... doesn't that, according to this video, mean you are going to keep your insulin levels high? Also, I think at the end of the day the question isn't about fat or protein, it's about eating nutrient dense whole foods and listening to your body.

    • @iss8504
      @iss8504 9 місяців тому +5

      The elderly generally don't eat enough protein period. TRE is better for them but they might just benefit from more protein and then doing some resistance training. If no resistance training, you lose muscle because your body sees no need for it.
      If older people eat enough protein amd lift weights rhey can build muscle. A lady at our gym looks fantastic, she is 70 and has the best arma of any woman of any age in there. She does IF too. Use it lose it, but you have to fees it protein.

Protein powder, creatine monohydrate etc. I'm happy with 16/8 IF which gives you most of the benefits. I'll occasionally do a 24 hour fast if I feel my body needs a reset. These docs give great advice but you have to do what's right for you.

    My doc, also from Toronto, is completely ignorant about reversing T2 diabetes, keto or low carb, and even intermittent fasting. More education is needed for docs on this critical subject. Just prescribing drugs without tackling the underlying disease does not solve the problem. I've been learning from Dr. Fung for 2-3 years now and do OMAD and IF, with great results. I also strength train fasted. This collab was really useful and fun to listen to. Dr Fung recommends max 50g of carbs/day..interesting.
