Fasting is a great way to optimize your health, and it’s more approachable than you might think. It is a free tool that activates all the systems in your body to protect you, heal you, and help you live longer. Fasting can help to reduce inflammation, brain fog, and insulin resistance. It can also increase energy and bone density and activate autophagy, which is the process of cleaning out damaged cells.
In this episode of my new Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about the many benefits of fasting. We also talk about the different types of fasting so you can determine if one is right for you.

Now that says a lot about fasting. I’m all over it!!!
I started fasting April 26, 2023. As of today I lost 88 pounds. It was the best thing I ever did fasting healed my lymphedema I can walk again I was feeling 90 and now I feel 40 amazing!! I fast for 17 hours a day. Most of the time I’m sleeping and sometimes longer when I need healing. It’s amazing.
I highly recommend fasting
Very interested to learn of the fasting methodology you employed to help reduce your lymphedema?
I also struggle from having lymphedema when I eat fatty or salty foods my leg swells extremely bad but when I fast I seen a huge difference in my leg with the swelling going down
What is ur window? How many meals and what did u eat? I started as well...on Tuesday... today is my 3rd day... but I also started a kind of diet. So tomorrow is veggie day.

Fasting is super biblical. I love how science just proves the Living Word
At age 60 I looked 70. Age spots on my face and body, 50 pounds overweight, sick with high blood pressure, pre-diabetic, gout, joint pain… Now at age 65 after 3 years of low carb/Keto with intermittent fasting and fasting days, I look 50-55 years old. I lost 50 pounds and am down to a 32” waist, at 6’0” and I am now at 180 pounds. She lost 35 lbs. We totally cleared out our fridge and pantry, getting rid of all processed foods and oils. We use only coconut, avocado, olive and MCT oils, collagen powder, some supplements, like cod liver oil, and a variety of D, K, E, B- Complex… No more bread, pasta, or high starch vegetables. We buy whole natural foods and enjoy cooking healthy and wholesome meals. I do the cooking. We feel good and exercise regularly, and our sexuality has skyrocketed.
How do you do this when your a fussy eating all your life. I’ve been trying to fast for 17 hours. And I struggle. I also have a job as a baker! How do you do it ?
@@blc1960 You educate yourself by learning all that you can on the right foods, recipes, choices…and what are the wrong foods and choices. Clean out your house of all the bad foods, oils, condiments, flour, sugar… Don’t eat out unless you know the food is appropriate for low carb and is quality, like a good steak with asparagus and some cauliflower… You have to devote yourself entirely. It not just fasting. Intermittent fasting is the next important step after replacing the foodstuffs. Once you are eating right and skipping the one meal so that you only eat super healthy for 6-8 hours, allowing for 16-18 hours of fasting in between, you will have made a big leap. The whole, healthy food you eat, fills you up faster, and satiates you longer. Watch UA-cam videos by Dr. Fong and Dr. Mark Hyman and others. You either believe that you can do it and do have the strength, or you don’t. About the bakery, I cook delicious dishes for the week on fasting days or during my fasting hours.

How did you do it?
@@LuluTheMiniMuse you can do it if you have a will and patience
@@LuluTheMiniMuseAt the beginning of my intermittent fasting ,it was just 16 hours ,then 18 hours. But,I have finally determined to do 23 hours and I am very adapted to it right now. I eat healthy food like mackerel, eggs, avocados, extra olive oil, olives, organic, unpasteurized, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, and vegetables( tomatoes and cucumbers are my best veggies)and I drink black tea with no sugar or artificial sweeteners. Right now ,I consume virgin ,organic coconut oil( I add it to my black tea). Healthy oils like extra olive oil and virgin, organic coconut oil make me satiated for a long time. I sometimes eat cheese and nuts like walnuts, Brazil nuts ,pecan and macadamia nuts. I don't want to cheese and nuts every day becuase they are trigger foods. I really overonsume them without stopping. I don't eat bread ,wheat products, rice of any type, no grains in my diet, no starchy vegetables like potatoes or any vegetables growing underground, no sugar of any type ,no artificial sweeteners, and no fruits .

Cholesterol dropped from 139 to 114 with the first 4 fasting, now it’s 88. Triglycerides dropped from 95 to 43 .
But what amazed the doctor the most was my ALT : 8 months ago the doctor asked if I drink often because my liver was showing some damage, since I don’t drink he diagnosed me with non alcoholic fatty liver, ALT was 31 and dropped to 17 .!!!!
All that with no medication, only water fasting

I'm currently on day 65 of a 100 day juice fast. I'm a avid faster, who has lost over 120lbs, healed my heart disease, fatty liver disease, arthritis and hormone imbalance. I had a stroke at 31yrs old, and was told I would need to take medication for the rest of my life. I take no pharmaceutical drugs, only herbs. Fasting has literally saved my life.
I would love to hear more about your journey. What kind of fasting did you do?
Thank you so much. I started fasting about 3years ago. I was desperate as my health was going downhill fast. My first juice fast was 3 days, and i felt so sick with the mucous coming out, I went for 7 days. After the first fast I was hooked.
I juice every single day and eat a high raw plantbased diet. I've completed 7, 14, 21, 36 and 64 day fast, and every single time the benefits and the healing my body does is amazing. So I have adopted biblical fasting so what that means is I prey while fasting and I just thank God for everything I have or if I have a problem or a health issue I prey while fasting that is a way to deny yourself to God and put him first and he will answer your prayers so what I do for example is maybe my dinner is at 7 then done eating by 8 so from 8 pm with no snacks untill noon next day so there is 16 hrs so then at noon I will have a lil lunch then fast again untill dinner at 7 pm so that is a total of 22 hrs fasting and preying and once you get into this type of habit just watch how your body heals itself and just watch how God will work in your life and heal you from things you are suffering from, God bless all who reads and adopts this Amen

I went on the 16/8 restricted eating fast and eliminated pancakes, cake, cookies, donuts and chocolate milk and just started eating healthy and lost weight scary fast. 25 pounds in 50 days. It was unbelievable. From 195 to 170LB. My target weight was 168. What I weighed during my college years. It was not a struggle at all. With 16/8 fasting I was just never that hungry so losing weight was easy for me.
What did you eat during the 8 hour window?
Just went back to the way I ate as a kid. The way my parents fed me. I'm 61 years old. No junk food cuz we never had any around when I was a kid. I just ate 3 square meals a day. One plate of food at each meal with an infasis on getting my protein and fiber requirements. Just ate from all the food groups. Simple as that.
And I ate simple so I can keep track of how many calories I consumed. It's hard to do that if you're eating casseroles, pizza, take out ect. So, best to cook at home. Resistance training is helpful as well but probably didn't affect my weight loss.
"The smartest doctor in the room is your own body", because everyone's body is different. "Don't let your ideology trample over your biology." Brilliant, Dr Hymen!
Completing day 6 of fasting. I don't have a specific number of days as a goal. I've never been this emotionally and spiritually fit. Working to listen to my body and the Holy Spirit as to when to break my fast. Been practicing OMAD and lo-carb/carnivore way of eating for a long time.
It seems to be the wisest move to practice fasting, I know this from learning to fast starting when I was 17. The first thing I noticed was my mental clarity and a lot of Gods peace, fasting is a strange thing because you can rest but in the spiritual and physical realm you are advancing at light speed.

As part of my 15-year fasting journey, in my early 60s I discovered that beginning my fast after the 6pm meal, by the time I wake up the next morning I'm already 12 hours into my 72 hours fast. Fasting is a mind game and I am happier knowing I only miss 2 full days of food - by the third day I eat dinner and break the fast - usually with a clear zucchini soup. I appreciate Dr. Hyman repeating that we need to listen to our bodies and do what works for us... we learn the hacks along the way. Bon chance!
I have started keto diet for a month now and I’ve dropped 10 lbs. I also quit coffee and I have solved sleeping problems. I woke up fresh in the morning. No more fatigue and joint pain I used to struggle with. Only eat home cook whole food.. strictly no sugar and carb.
I started fasting in early July, and lifting weights on a moderate basis. I'm down 30 pounds. Still have a ways to go to get back to where i was in my 20's, but more than half way there. Eating better - no crap has also helped big time. 👊👊

Truck drivers have had an industry systematically trying to kill us with addicted food culture! Lack of available food sources, and new food products being tested on our addictions, have turned living out here on the road sickening! Fasting has saved my life, saved me money, and could save lives of truckers all over this country! It's clearly the only protocol that works, and prevents addiction, helps with focus, sleep deeper, and keeps us off medication!

It's perfect for truckers and yes truck stops are so loaded with junk and energy products it's like they are actually trying to kill you

Two weeks down and we’re excited about this clean lifestyle!
Been doing 36 hour fast for the past three months and I've never felt better.
16 hours is easy. Snacking and eating all the time puts a strain on your digestive system. People that eat a few times a day, whole foods. No processed. I am 68 and my friends are all slim, eat hearty soups in winter, more salads in summer and keep it simple. No snacks, its a waste of time.
I have found that 16 hours is easily achievable with about a week's acclimation (for me). We eat whole foods in our home, always have....but regrettably I have a terrible sweet tooth which I'm trying to pull out with both hands. I have found that IF helps quell those pangs. So much good/bad advice out there...finding one's own sweet spot (v. sweet tooth!) is key. Not all bodies react to same diet.
I have been on various fasting regimes for 4 years now. it is a transition thing as I am now only eating either once or twice a week. i.e. 3 days of eating every 2 weeks (Fasting 5/4/5). Whole real foods. Zero 'processed' unless I do it myself. I feel great, tonnes of energy, I exercise (cycling), I walk, I sleep well. Constant nose breathing. Cold showers daily (sometimes 2 on exercise days). Zero hygiene products i.e No soap, no shampoo, no deoderant, I brush my teeth with water. Zero bad breath, no body odour. I only change my clothes once per week, they never smell. I have a hot bath once a week/fortnight with epson salts. Weight stable, no cravings, never hungry. Planning and preparing my food on eating days is a joy. Grass Fed meat nose to tail, fish, eggs, organic veg and fruits, do my own fermenting, make my own yogurt. Zero pastuerised products. All dairy is based on raw milk. Home made Bone Broth and Kvass. Combination of Water (Structured & Blessed), coffee and green tea on fasting days. Life is a breeze and remarkably calm and stress free even though I still encounter challenging situations which in the past would cause varying degrees of distress.
😛😁😆

I’m curious as to why you don’t change your clothes more than once a week?

@@User-ph6edIntermittent fasting. It's better to eat one huge meal per day then take small meals or like a snack for the rest of the day. I choose leafy greens, fruits or a detox drink for my snacks especially when I suddenly snack on a slice of cake, cupcake, cookie or brownie or ice cream. I think it's depends on what has been eating because someone obese cannot just directly go to fasting...they have to make a gradual process...
Growing up in Africa, this was a lifestyle. We were not poor. We were made to think we were poor for not always eating, and having no desire or access to processed foods. No wonder we were really sick. I looked so you and still do when I moved to the USA, I was surprised how much older and bigger people looked.
Just for those who doubt the efficacy of this regive - I started a 16/8 regime at 60 and had a cyst on my thyroid and struggled to walk upstairs as my knees were inflamed. I now have no cyst as per my latest 63 years scan and can run up the stairs. I eat a `'no fur`' diet - so fish and fowl but no fur and no processed meats and lots of vegetables and some potatoes and corn wraps. I love these videos and believe this fasting keto idea may not cure cancer but certainly helps manage it to keep me away from hospitals and white coats that exist, In my humble opinion, more as a profit driven business than health buiding business. I practice OMAD for 4 months. Have lost 60lbs. I swim 30 min every other day. Miraculous. A1C went from 11 to 5 blood pressure went from 140/90 to 112/62. More energy. Sharper mind. It is the fountain of youtu
What time do I eat omad diet
4pm
I have never done a long-term fast successfully. By the 2nd day, I'll crush. At 77y/o, I just completed a successful 15-day water fast. Key to success was having ketones on board before starting the fast to have fuel on board to use immediately.
Dr Hyman you are just great. Love your vids and personality too I can't help but have a BIG Smile when I watch you.. Your enthusiasm and smile is contagious. God Bless you good man
I generally fast 18/6, 5 days a week low,low carb( guess it's dirty keto lol) Every now and then I do 24 or 40 hr fasts.
This was a lovely informative podcast! 50 hours and going - 24-48 was like walking on The Valleys of shadows of death 💀 I would say even spiritually. 48 onwards it’s a piece of cake
Thank you Dr Hyman. We get educated from your videos to help us to live better and healthier. Your video is very informative, simple, and easy to follow. All my respect and appreciation 💕
Started 2 years a go at 56, i do intermitent fasting 12-14 hrs everyday. Now i am 32, body fat 15℅, visceral fat level 9 (metabolically).
Amazing you got 24 years younger!!.yalza...yalza...yalza that's incredible!!
You would know what he's talking about if you did keto.
Dr. Hyman has got to be one of the most knowledgeable men I know on health. The man is absolutely awesome…
Great holistic podcast!!! Fasting is a game-changer. Cutting out carbs for part of the week or month is critical (below 20g). So helpful to get this information from a well researched well-educated and authentic approach! ❤🎉
Oh my. This is 100% the most comprehensive solid, well presented information ever. Thank you thank you.
really informative guest, but the host was also extremely effective ! Thank you!
Fasting has changed my life!!! Getting your labwork done 💃💃💃
Great interview!Thank you so much! ❤️
Love fasting, 12 hours, 36, 42 whenever I need to. Also Ketogenic diet. NO SUGAR- SUCROSE ETC. 68 FEEL GREAT.
One year now. Intermittent fasting improved my peace of mind and health. My struggle is to eat enough quality protein. The amount of grams of protein required a day to build muscle seems high to me.
Fasting is much easier and effective if you begin as a fat adapted fat burner from a very low carb/keto way of eating.
Agreed! When i eat a lot of carbs, I feel hungry the entire time i’m fasting. Cutting out much of my carbs, much easier.
So by eating carbs also can we do fast?
And reverse diabetics?
Thank you so much Doctor ❤️ I'm starting my fast Monday a 7days fast to lower my high blood pressure and more
Love fasting, I found when I started I was always thinking of time, know I can go threw my day and not worry when will I eat. It’s just amazing how I have healed myself from always thinking of food. I try explain to friend how I choice to live. They think I am nuts yet I look at them and release,no not all.
definitely beneficial oms. for the menopausal symptoms. No hot flashes after few days of fasting.
Best video I've seen. Thank you!
Thank you for a wonderful discussion with lots of insights on the subject. 👍👍👏👏👏
I have been doing this for quite some time now 2 years. Then I didn't do it again for weeks after that. Now I've learned it. And it has become normal for me. Now it has become my lifestyle.
Love it. I do 72 hour fasts every month and 20:4 intermittent fasting the rest of the time. Also, Dr. Mark is a fox.
I do the 20:4 but not the 72 - way to go, God bless.
Lol
Agreed! He is a sexy doc
Ewwwww no.
Just what I needed to hear this morning ..Thank you
I’ve been pulling off 14-16hr dry fasts with easy chances of going longer while being active(on the clock💰, push-ups, squats, jumping jacks mainly, nothing intense), it really does depend on your body & how you utilize & train it
What’s good w a dry fast??
Great video, Mark! Keep up the good work you're doing; you've helped me so much! : )
Mark seems like a very knowledgeable friendly guy. I would be fortunate if he was my doctor.
I restarted my fasting regimen yesterday. I am planning to go on a 72 hour fast every week for the first 3 months, and sustain the fasting with a monk fast (36 hours) after the first 3 months. I need to kick start my metabolic processes with fasting. When I stopped fasting, I put on weight, lost energy and motivation and became terribly lazy. I used to be very fit back in the day, now have every bad thing under the sun from white hair to belly fat. Hopefully it all reverses soon!
I fast 7 days a week-
I eat from 7-10 pm.
I stay away from sugars but will undulge occasionally.
I drink seltzers, black coffee and water during day.
Dinner includes a good size meat, vegetable (low carb dinner) i will still eat carbs but very minimal.
After dinner, i will eat 2 apple, a cup of suflower seeds and 1 cup of almond, cashews or high proetien snack. I was 220 now iam 182. I am also highly active 16k steps a day. And fairly muscular now
Great content, I should try this. Thanks for sharing.
Great content Dr Hyman. I do 23-1 and sometimes 22-2 depending on how fast or how slow I eat. I also do a 2 day water fast on Saturdays and Sundays. I feel AMAZING!
How much do you weigh and how often do you exercise?
Do you get hair loss?
NoIĺĺ
Same I do 22 hour fasts regularly. Feel Fantastic. Abs come out faster and more muscle all over my body.

Thank you so much for such great video! Very interesting and helpful information!
Thank you Dr. Hyman. I'm getting to understand more with your helpful videos and books
Thanks for your fantastic work done! Learnt so much from your program!
Thank you Dr Hyman. I started wit intermittent fasting and manage the 18/4 easily the first week. Only ate lunch and dinner. Next week I will try one meal only. I am 79 and have a lot of health problems. The most painful one is poly myalgia and fibro myalgia. I am also borderline diabetic and too fat. 18 years ago I juice fasted for 62 days to fight cancer. FASTING should not be a problem for me.
One year later … how are you doing??
how are u now?
@@janesworld1577I was going to ask exactly the same question. Sadly, it appears not too good. Hope I'm wrong
Thank you Sir/Madam for sharing. Could you give me the details of juice fasting you did, how you started off eating normal again after the fasting ended. I would appreciate other tips based on your experience in doing the juice fasting. Please let me know exactly what juice. Did you completely avoid eating solid food for 62 days? Thank you Sir/Madam. Looking forward to receiving your reply
brilliant stuff that works. thank you very much!
Thank you Dr . Your advice snd education is so inspiring and reminds us to value our health more . I noted you Saying that everyones metabolism is different , therefore each of us must know and find out what our metabolism is. What are the steps to define or find out what my metabolism is or rate is? Thank you
Dr. Hyman should have elaborated in detail regarding the process of autophagy that occurs during fasting. Dr. Yoshinori Ohsumi won the Nobel Prize in 2016 for Medicine or Physiology for uncovering the mechanisms and functioning of the process of autophagy which is triggered by and accelerates during fasting. Dr. Ohsumi discovered that our body has an intrinsic native intelligence inextricably intertwined in our DNA that instructs the body, among other things, to heal itself and maintain health. The natural process of autophagy is central to and a key biological process that makes fasting so effective and powerful in fixing and reversing many ailments especially during prolonged fasts.
I loved this interview. Cheers… I’ll try to change my lifestyle immediately. 😀
I have been doing 18 hr fasts weekdays for several months now and I’m back to my high school weight…but what really helped me to stick to this was the Life Fasting Timer app …it was definitely a game changer for me .I’m working up to the 72 hour fast to trigger Autophagy to eliminate inflammation 🤞🤞
Wow.. Knowledge..just hit me over the head... Amazing!! I appreciate the information.🧠💪🏿✨
Excellent discussion.
Fasting has been a game changer for me, I’m experiencing a new level of wellness.
Classic! whole playlist is worth listening. Thankyou so much.
THANK GOODNESS FOR VIDEOS LIKE THIS! A great mindset for learning: REMEMBER The brain learns by repetition.....so learning OR DOING something new means the brain doesn't know..."YET". And therefore learning something you don't know is just 'UNFAMILIAR". The repetition will make the brain comfortable. But 1st its good to rewire how the brain sees learning something new.
So SAY THIS TO YOURSELF: "This is hard to do or Learning something new is hard"
Then hum ABC song this accomplishing to things its a distraction and whimsical gives a feel good vibe.
Repeat 3x's(this literally will start to detach the "hard concept" cause you keep interrupting the pattern
More advanced results: think of something you failed to do and so didn't try anymore doing....say to self "such and such was hard and I can't do it, it made me feel (fill in the blank). Then hum ABC song (3x's)
If you do this now it will motivate you because the brain will stop automatically giving that message that things you don't know are hard to do.
Wonderful episode 🙏🏻✨🌹
you are a very important human being. a light in the dark . God bless you
Wonderful feedback here from the world,Thank you so much, giving me hope in a dark January
Great , thanks for this one .
I eat one meal a day.
24 hour fast once a week.
72 hour fast once a month.
Do you still have energy?
Bravo
Hyman explicitly advises AGAINST OMAD
Love fasting. I've just retired from fighting pro mma , but still do grappling comps , to keep fit and sharp . But for years I was over training and body was in bits , bad knees carpal tunnel lower back pains, since I start fasting a couple years ago, all my pains have gone and my energy is great again. I do 24 hour every Monday and 16-8 Tuesday till Saturday, I've done 36 hours and the odd 78 hours . I have day off Sunday and if I need one or two days off in the week I do . Today I'm starting the one meal a day , giving it a go for 7 days. Going to be hard eating all my calories in just one hour 😂 Lets see my results in a week . But I will do fasting always now , I try all different ones see what's working best . But my energy off the 3 day fast was brilliant, I was happy for days ,like I was high on something 😂😂 If I could go back I would of done fasting all through my fighting career , no energy crashes, from all the carbs I got told u need for energy, thats not true, I have some much energy now I don't really eat carbs much, have them with my cheat meals now
I'm 60, and have always been thin, fit and have a high metabolism. I'm in good health, exercise daily and take no prescription drugs. I stopped eating dairy last year because of a prostate cancer diagnosis. I eat a fairly low carb diet. I try to fast 14 hours. I'm constantly hungry and lose weight if I don't eat some carbs. I'm glad Dr. Hyman doesn't promote a one-size-fit's-all diet.
if yoyre constantly hungry your not doing something right. You may need more healthy fats in your diet. olive oil, nuts, coconut oil, fish, etc. glad to geE stopping dairy helped with your prostate cancer! That's amazing. Stopping dairy is very hard!
@@boromirofmiddleearth557 They advise cutting dairy but don't know if it helped. Will go back shortly for follow-up.
@@boromirofmiddleearth557 i hear what you’re saying, it’s conventional wisdom but not applicable to everyone. I have the same problem as mentioned above, especially when training (cycling) hard. As my body approaches its set point, the hunger is only satiated by carbs, if only temporarily.
Family member has same. Docs are not saying cut out anything. Hope your well. Update on any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Great content! Thank you
