I recently got a 460 smith and wesson and I gotta say I love it, I've been living up here for about 20 years now and this gun certainly has some authority to it, I'm young and dumb so I know not every one will want to deal with that sort of recoil currently saving up my money to get a Big Horn Armory Model 90 to pair with my revolver.
Make sure you take the revolver with you always because I have a friend that had the 454 casual rifle from rossi and it keep jamming rounds when needed thank god he was only hunting for deer he returned his back to rossi and got a full return for purchase and purchase a Henry now he has no more problems.
The only comment I have concerning masks ( though it's now a mute point) is that unless you're referring to very high end surgical masks, it's physically impossible to stop the spread of any virus by wearing a mask. The largest virus in existence is infinitely smaller than the smallest opening on virtually all masks. It's literally like trying to catch minnows in a bass net.
Just bought a Rossi .454 from Alaska, and I gotta say, it's one of the most beautiful and slickest rifles I've encountered, I reload .45 Colt and mainly got this for cowboy action but after holding it, working the lever, and testing the trigger pull, I would have no problem using it for everything, from hunting to home defense, I lost my leg and this rifle is lighter than my prosthetic, gotta find some .454 ammo now, great video
Thanks for watching Miles! Yes, I love mine as well, and when paired with my Taurus Raging Bull 454 Casull, it's quite a combo. I usually shoot 45 LC in mine for target practice. I have quite a bit of ammo loaded in 454 Casull, because you're right, it is challenging to come by at a decent price in good times; and next to impossible to find at all in current times. Are you in Alaska?
@@milesmanges same here in south Texas. I was going to say if you were in Alaska, I'm going up the last 2 weeks of September and we could have met up somewhere and I'd have given you some of my 454 loads... but unfortunately that can't happen.
Thank you for the fantastic information sir! I've been looking at getting a .454 Casull 5.5" Super Redhawk to have with me while hiking in Montana. I will certainly be checking out Barnes Bonecrusher ammunition thanks to your recommendations. Wishing you and your kin a happy holiday season.
Why more companies aren't offering lever guns in .454 is confusing. I've seen some Rossis on gunbroker, and they always go over $1,400. I am NOT paying that for any lever gun that doesn't already come with a pic rail or threaded muzzle. By, the way, I have the 8" raging hunter in .454 and I shoot 50-75 rds a day. A joy to shoot if your stance is good. Tip: Do Not lock elbows. Hold it light and let it rip. With a sig romeo 5 red dot, I can get 2-3" groups at 100yds with 240 hornady xtp. Incredible handguns!
I'm sorry you're having such issues finding the 454 lever actions. I agree with you, it should be a main-stay... but I guess it's not as sexy as 45-70. That's fantastic with your Raging Hunter. It is a pleasure to shoot - much better than a 44 MAG (at least to me) which makes no sense since the 454 is a more powerful round... lol!! You're definitely right about not locking the elbows!! 2-3" groups at 100 yards is quite impressive!! Is that from a rest or free hand? Have a Happy New Year Sir!! and thanks for watching the channel!!
@@thelonemoose4718 I find the .454 much sexier than the .45-70. And when coming out of a longer rifle barrel with much higher velocities, its nearing the same energy. But the bonus is its in a much smaller case, meaning you can carry twice the capacity. The group at 100 is rested on a vanguard bipod shooting stick. I may pop a Burris ontop and start reaching out to 150. Ppl need to appreciate the 454 casull. At 100 yds out of a handgun, it has more energy than a 44mag does at the muzzle. Taking the Raging Hunter coyote hunting soon 😉
Good video, I've been thinking about getting a carbine to go along with my Freedom Arm's model 83 .454 Casull. The rifle that you have there looks like a very good choice. Thank you for sharing your video, and your reloading knowledge, it's very much appreciated. 😀👍
I have the Freedom Arms model 83 .454 Casull (field grade) and the exact Rossi in this video and it's a great combo. The Rossi doesn't have near the fit and finish of the Freedom Arms pistol, but I'm glad I have both. My Rossi is pretty accurate at 100 yards and I wouldn't hesitate to stretch it out to 150 or 200 yards, but that would be the max for me. Pick up a Rossi if you can find one, you won't regret it.
My carry of many years is a Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8 barrel in .45 Colt. My hand load is a Nosler 300 grain partition pushed to 1,100-1,200 fps. The rifle,a Marlin 1895 classic in 45-70 with Leupold 1.5x 4x20 Pig plex reticle. I recently bought a Rossi R92 .454 Casull. I like having 10 rounds of 45-70 power on tap. I won't get a revolver in .454 Casull. A man needs to know his limits.
Thanks for watching and the comments Ralph!! I have a Rossi 45-70 lever action, which is highly effective, but not a lot of fun to shoot for practice. I do like my 454 Casull lever action for both it's power, and far less punishment to my shoulder!! lol... like you, I do have to know my limitations. My 454 revolver is a Taurus Raging Hunter. I think it's like a 5" or so barrel, and the barrel is ported. That really goes a long way to tame the recoil. I have a Taurus Raging Hunter in 44 Mag with a 6.5" barrel, also ported, and that thing just plain HURTS to shoot. I'll be making my big move to Alaska this spring/summer. If you happen to live in, or will be in AK, reach out to me and we'll figure a way to meet up (depending on where you are obviously) and you can try out my Taurus if you like. Take care Ralph!!
Mark, that's how I am with 44 Magnum. I just do not like that caliber! I had a bad experience with it when I was in my early 20's, and have had both a revolver and lever action rifle in 44 Mag in recent years. I ended up selling both to a friend of my son. Not every caliber or handgun is cut out for everyone. I hope at some point you find a pistol that feels comfortable in your hand, and has a manageable recoil. I true enjoy recreational shooting and target practice. Thanks for your comment sir!
I have the same 454 Casull Rossi 92 except the one I own has factory HiViz sights instead of the buckhorn type. I just loaded 10 .45 long colt rounds via the loading tube. Then, after I unloaded the 92 Rossi, I loaded the same 10 .45 long colt rounds via the loading port on the side of the receiver. My side loading port is 100% functional....its not just for looks. My 454 Casull 92 Rossi will only hold 9 rounds of 454 Casull. The 454 Casull rounds will load either way as well.
You would be amazed how effective those C02 boat air horns are on all large animals. The 150DB high pitch blast is more painful to a bear than pepper spray or bullets.
Thanks Weedeater!! I like to have "matched pair sets" of rifle and pistol. My most recent acquisition is .357 lever action rifle to match with 3 .357 revolvers.
Thanks David!! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and that it helped you with your reloading endeavors! I'm always open to thoughts, ideas, comments and constructive criticism! This is all about fun for me, and sharing what little I know with anyone who cares to watch. Stay Safe!!
I enjoyed the video. I have a rossi r92 in .357 mag i use for hog hunting mostly but that’s the bigger threat where I’m from (here in south Ga) i do look forward to getting go to Alaska to see some family that moved several years ago now & hopefully i can go hunting up there someday too. Again good video man. Keep it up.
Thanks Casey!! Alaska is a magical place!! Hopefully I make the big move next summer!! Keep watching, I'm in the process of posting several videos from spending 3 months up there this past summer.
Nice choice, I lived I SE AK for 8 years, carried super Redhawk Cassul 7.5” in a shoulder rig, and two speed loaders on my belt. People just need to carry what they are comfortable and confident carrying, and then shoot regularly to keep your skills up. I didn’t have to use it on a bear, but came close several times while hiking or fishing. Carried a BLR .325 WSM for hunting. Common sense is your best defense. If you ever smell something like nasty clothes left in a gym locker, just turn around and go back the way you came, maybe back up slowly for a bit with firearm in hand. If you come up on some freshly chewed salmon carcasses, leave carefully and slowly leave.
That's GREAT advice! Thank you!! So far on my trips up there I have not had any bear encounters, but I know it will happen one day. You are exactly correct about carrying what you're comfortable with, and practice... practice... practice!! I have a 44 Mag Taurus Raging Bull and I just don't like the feel of it when I shoot it, whereas I'm extremely comfortable with the 454 Casull! I'm impressed!! a .325 WSM!! I had thought about getting one of those...now is not a good time to try to get any type of firearm, everything is extremely short supply. I've got both a 300 Win Mag and a 338 Win Mag for hunting rifles. My son in Utah has my 300 WSM that he has spiced up and is using it for a 1000 yard rifle! I really liked that rifle, but he's having more fun with it than I ever could.
The loading gate is not just for looks although out of the box it doesn't function properly with a little tickling from a few files my dad made his Rossi 454 load smoothly through the loading gate
454 I have the original it is Absolutely Devastating powerful I once shot a Big Buck in the neck at30 yards he collapsed as if lighting had struck him he didn't even make a step at All like I said Devastating powerful the 454 I'm Hooked for Life.
Howdy Jeff! Thanks for the comment!! I'm envious that you've had the opportunity to try it out deer hunting. There are no deer in the part of Alaska where I'll be retiring - and I made the mistake of shipping mine up too early! I'd love to have it and do some deer hunting in WV at my cousins' place. Maybe another day... Good luck with yours!! I'm glad you're hooked for life!! Be safe my friend!!
Both are great calibers. I usually shoot 45 Long Colt in mine just for plinking and target practice. I also have a 45-70 which is a horse of a caliber!! Mine will be going up to AK with the trip in 3 weeks.
@@thelonemoose4718 she shoots my 45-70 reloads without issue, and i load them really stout. Pretty good for a skinny teenage girl. But shes used to shooting 12 gauge slugs so its no big deal for her. She even shoots my ruger 454 alaskan. The more thump something has, the more she loves shooting it
@@TietLung That's really cool that she loves the "thump" of the big guns! I load my 45-70 quite hot as well, and even with that big recoil pad you see in the photo and videos, it packs a punch! Thanks for sharing!!
So long as the gun has the appropriate strength (such as a 1892 Miroku/Winchester for example), you can hand-load a 45 colt to 44 magnum pressures and have a very powerful load for a 20" levergun without the need to deal with 454 Casull pressures and cost. The need for more is solved in a 45-70.
I have the Rossi R92 in 454, with blued barrel and receiver, I’ve taken a nice whitetail buck with it, he dropped right where I shot him. I shoot a 260 grain XTP hollow point in it. I also have a Thompson Center Pro Hunter in 460 S&W magnum.
Were you single loading the .45 Colt ammo? My buddy says his Rossi R92 454 won't feed the shorter rounds from the magazine tube reliably. Did you modify yours, or is his in need of a factory repair? Thank you!
@@thelonemoose4718 ah, well we have been light loading .454 Casull (using a fiber filler) for years so we can still use that for plinking, but Oh that beautiful Thump from the full house loads!!! Thank you again!
If I ever go to Alaska I would take my 45-70 with spire tip titanium an my 9mm with extreme penetrator. That spire tip titanium is a one shot through in through.
You can forget about getting a 454 Casull rifle anytime soon. Rossi (and Citadel, which is made in the Rossi factory) rifles have been unavailable since at least January 2020.
If you’ve got the cash BigHorn have amazing quality and look amazing. I’ve got the same stainless 454 as shown in this video. Factory Barnes ammo , 250 XPB WILL PASS CLEAR THROUGH A MOOSE BROADSIDE AT 75 yards. Three shots fired on the run. One shot from right to left another from left to right and a raking shot as the bull tried to get away. Only recovered the raking shot that went from last rib up along the spine and stoping in the neck. 90 something percent retention for sure. Very impressed. A hot 454 has similar energy to original pressure 45/70 load. And they do just fine . Now to settle on a bullet for deer , maybe 250 XTP?
Good choices for Alaska. Loads good with choices you made. These guys with autos in Alaska never went in some of those bogs. That country is hard on firearms. 45/70 I have is an marlin out of CT that comes factory ported. So I have a side gate to reload, personal don't like going in tube. And 44 with 240 & 340 works and 405 and 500 for 45/70. Holsters I like a cross draw so I can reach it with either hand.
Thanks for the comment Ted! I had never really given much thought to a cross draw holster for my 454... Hmmm.... I"ll have to check and see if Craft Holsters makes one for that model. If you haven't watched any of them, I do product reviews for Craft Holsters. I'm a big fan of leather holsters, and all of theirs are custom made. They make a good Alaskan Chest Holster. I'm working with them on one modification that I think would make it the perfect chest holster. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts, much appreciated!!
@@tedsemonis7905 Howdy Ted! My best ambidextrous activity is actually batting a baseball - I hit better left handed than right. I just bought a left-handed holster for my Colt King Cobra and am starting to "train" myself to draw left handed. Next will be training my brain to shoot with both eyes open with either hand! I wonder if that's even possible for a geriatric old brain??? LOL!!!
Not sure I would even mess with the hollow point bullets for bear protection. The hair and fat layers on a bear might make it mushroom prematurely before it penetrates deep enough. The 300 plus solid grainers are the way to go.
@@thelonemoose4718 I'm reloading 325 grain flat nose lead behind 25.5 grains of H110 for my .454. Haven't got a chance to run them thru a chrony yet. As soon as the weather warms up.
@@davidcudlip6587 Thanks for that info David! Please let me know how they test out! Most of my loading equipment is already up north... just waiting on me to get there and start having some fun!!
Is there sight mounts under the rear iron sight? I saw somewhere that there was and you can buy a picatinny rail specifically for it. Idk about this gun specifically though because some do and some don't.
Howdy Skyler! Honestly, I don't know. The 454 Casull's are up at the Alaska cabin and I'm back in TX. I'll try to remember to look when I go back up in August.
Hopefully you get to work loading the Rossi before the Bear starts charging from Texas... Henry rifles finally started providing the option for a side gate and rod; my Henry takes all day Sunday to load...
Mine is pretty easy to load... you just unscrew the rod from the top, drop the rounds down the tube, and screw the rod back in place... then I jack a round in the chamber, put it on safe, and carry it as needed.
Your Rossi should hold 9 rounds of 454 and 10 45 colt rounds in the tube. Knowing how hard that 454 kicks, there is no way I'd want to shoot that ammo in a pistol, a 45 colt +P is bad enough.
Good protection no doubt, my guide swears by pumps and semi, he says though rare, if caught off guard shot placement is virtually impossible. The crazy guy said the first time he was extremely lucky with his 454. Now, he puts out a wall of lead , I'm guessing. Nice weapons. I've heard there some Brazilian co. that makes great shotguns....Bazialtec or something. Don't know if there relates to Rossi or Taurus
I'll hang on to my Marlin .45/70 GBL while roaming Alaska wilds. i also have a S&W .44 mag in a chest holster if I don't feel like lugging the carbine around , maybe while hip deep in a salmon stream
Thanks for the comment Walter! I have a Taurus Raging Bull 44 Mag 6.5" barrel. It is also ported. Believe it or not, the recoil from the 44 MAG is worse than in my 454 Casull. I definitely agree with you on the chest holster while being in the salmon streams! Of course my motto is: If you have a fish on... and the bear wants the fish... cut the line! lol... Really, it is their world, we are just visitors to it...
I'm a big fan of the 10mm, but frankly the 10mm isn't in the same league as 454, not even close. 10mm can run with hot loads in a longer slide Glock up to 850lb ft or so. So we're talking maybe 41 mag levels. It's not even close to 44 mag, never mind approaching the mighty 454. The advantage the 10mm gives you is 15+1 in a relatively compact autoloader that weighs a LOT less than a Raging Bull or a Super Redhawk. So you could argue it's a "better" choice for bear defense only if you assume the 10mm is always going to be sufficient. Personally, I find that assumption a bit optimistic and that a true magnum revolver cartridge (44 mag or larger) is the real minimum for trustworthy bear and moose defense.
Good video and good luck in Alaska. Couple things, a 454 Casull is about 3 times the power of a 10mm so your right, It'll get the job done. My favorite black bear load is a Laser Cast 255gr. SWC bullet (hardcast lead) pushed by 30gr. of IMR 4227. (Anyone wanting to load this, work up carefully) It's a moderate load running at 1700 fps. from my 20" Stainless Rossi 92 and 1435 fps. from my 7.5" Ruger Super Redhawk and I do load my Rossi from the side gate no problem. If you don't mind, where did you get that speed loader ? Thanks.
Great info Ken!! Thanks!! I don't recall where I ordered that speed loader from... I'll have to go back through my records and see if I can figure it out. I'll let you know if I do. I'll save that load data for future reference too, if you don't mind!
I hope your trip went well. Being out during moose rut is one of the best times. I did not get a moose this year. Called one in within 10' or so but it was too young to be legal. There were 3 others but they would not come out. I got home and my wife tells me there were 3 bulls above our house 2 of which were sparring. Unfortunately the season was closed. I will do a winter hunt in the coming months. Thank you for the rant on wearing masks. I have lived in alaska for 20 years and my wife is from here. Neither of us can recall ever hearing about a person killed by a moose attack. Vehicle accidents perhaps? I do know someone that was kicked by one when they were walking to the school bus as a child. Bulls during rut can be aggressive when you call them in and i certainly would not want to get between a female and her calf. Bear attacks are not uncommon in the news during summer. I have had a number of up close encounters with black bears including being stalked by one. From experience i will say that the only way to stop a bear on the spot is a shot to the brain or spine. I shot one once through the heart and it ran full speed 20 or 30 feet. The vet i go to killed a griz with 2 shots from his 10mm. Took him 5 shots with his 454 because of poor shot placement. I always carry a 44 on my hip or a 444 lever gun. Both i load with 300grn hardcasts. I am encouraging a friend to get that 454 rifle to match his revolver.
I bought a 454 Taurus pistol about 20 plus years ago. About a year later I got a Rossi 454 lever gun. Mine is blued. I haven’t shot them for awhile about ten years, but the last time I shot them I handle the pistol okay but I had to quit on the lever after 3 shots. Kicked way too hard for me. Of course under an adrenal rush it would be okay. Side story, I have a friend with the same rifle and he got it second hand from a guy who bought it and only shot it once and put it up for sale. I think your model has a much thicker butt pad than mine.
I'm sorry to hear that you're having difficulties with recoil. I know mine has a really good recoil pad that makes it very tolerable to shoot the hotter 454 Casull rounds. You could also try shooting the 45 Long Colt rounds in it. They have a lot less recoil than the Casull rounds have. If you could find some hard cast lead bullets you will still get very good penetration; with much less recoil. You could also take yours to a gunsmith and have them fit a new, better recoil pad on yours; or, you could go to a Cabelas, Bass Pro Shops, or other gun stores. They may have slip-on recoil pads that will go on over your existing one, and that should help make the rifle more manageable. Just my thoughts...
If ya wanna go cheap walmart has a slip on limb saver for $20, i had to get one for my 12g to shoot 3in slugs if you wanna spend a little more Google recoil pads there are some great options to manage recoil that just replace your existing pad
@@back-woods GREAT info!! Thanks!! It has a pretty decent recoil pad built onto the rifle; however the idea of a Limbsaver for that price??? I'll check out Walmart today! Thank You!!!
Good afternoon John! Yes, the 44 Magnum is a good all around Alaska cartridge. It just does not work for me personally. I know it sounds crazy but it seemed like the 44 Mag Raging Bull that I had produced significantly more recoil than the 454 Casull, even though the 454 has more overall foot-pounds of energy.
@@thelonemoose4718 Very impressive (especially the No. 1 load). I'm only getting about 1,660 fps with a 250 gr. XTP bullet, and I have to use 35.5 gr. of H110 to achieve that velocity from my 7.5 inch barrel Ruger Super Redhawk.
Robert, I honestly do not know. I haven't looked under or removed the rear sight. Unfortunately I can't check it now since I'm in south Texas and it's in storage in Alaska. I'm sorry!!
Be interesting to know the fps is with those loads out of your rifle, they look like 6 in barrel velocities , my 45 colt p + out of my 20in henry loads match your casull loads listed here, good video!
Good morning! I've probably put 50 454 Casull rounds through the Rossi, and well over 200 rounds of hot 45 LC rounds through it. So far it has held up well to the pressures.

Good luck in your quest for a Rossi in the 454, I have been looking for a bit. I have seen a couple in the last yr but the prices were about 2 to 2.5 times what they sell new for. Hoping they put out a couple more this yr and get back in the swing of things so I can get one to match my Super Red Hawk.
Howdy Dave!! No, I'd never heard of it until you mentioned it. I'll look into that. I don't know that I'll be able to find any of that up here in Alaska.
WOW! I just looked them up and those look AWESOME!! It looks like Midway Supply has some in stock, so I'm going to order them and give them a try. Thanks Dave!!!
I want a 454 casull lever action. Im personally not that recoil sensitive unless uts something lousey with recoil like a 45-70 or a long action caliber like a 7mm rem mag or a 338 Lapua or even a 30-06 in a bolt gun. I plan to use my 454 as basically a do all gun option, i can take it to Alaska like you did. I can absolutely annihilate the feral hogs Texas has running rampant right now. And i dare say you could knock down a sasquatch with one. (If'n you believe in that sorta thing hahaha)
I have to agree with ya completely.... Although I do have a 45-70, a 7MM Rem Mag, a 338 Lapua, and a 270 Win (which is basically the same thing as a 30-06), I much prefer the recoil of the 454 Casull to those beasts! I'll even throw in a few others... 458 SOCOM, 450 Bushmaster, and 50 Beowulf. OK, so those are on AR-15 lowers, they still carry a heck of a whallop!!! In fact, I still have not shot the 50 yet... a buddy of mine in Utah has one, and he said after 6 shots his shoulder was bruised so badly he had to quit!! OUCH!! I have no doubt that the 454 would do a number on the hogs... unless you run into a Hogzilla - Sasquatch's little brother!! lol!!!! I've never had the opportunity to hunt feral hogs, I bet that would be a blast!! They don't have any of those up in Alaska... and I plan on making my big move next spring!!
@@thelonemoose4718 I've seen tracks of what I think was a hogzilla about 3 years ago. Never got to go after him unfortunately, covid shut everything down. Moose are mean as can be, but hogs down here can be 500 pounds of solid muscle and travel in packs of 30 or more. They've already hunted, killed and eaten several folks down in the Houston area.
@@ChargerusPrime what the heck do you do with the meat when you shoot the hogs??? Do you hunt them professionally? He was telling me about some of his scopes, night vision and infrared, that cost enormous amounts of money each!! Then I ran into a guy at Bed Bath and Beyond in San Marcos one day what was looking for the largest vacuum sealer they had. Why? For feral hog meat????? Really???? Since most of my toys are already up in Alaska, I think the most horse power I have on hand down here is 30-30... which I love dearly, but I don't know how that would do against Hogzilla!!!
@@thelonemoose4718 30-30 especially the modern cartridges will drop ANYTHING in North America within 100 yards. And no, I haven't been able to hunt them professionally and we get the meat tested for diseases. If they come back negative and safe, we cook em up and eat em. If you get a hog that eats or has been eating a lot of sugarcane, the meat will be very sweet it's absolutely delicious! And they use vacuum sealers to preserve and deep freeze the meat to my knowledge. I know a lot of professional hog hunters turn the pigs into the game wardens as they're dangerous nuisance animals that now do not require hunting licenses to kill and hunt. Some counties down here actually have bounties for feral pigs, I think it's $5 to $15 a tail depending on the county.
@@ChargerusPrime Well I certainly love my 30-30, and have taken a lot of deer in WV on my cousin's farm in past years. I bet that would be some sweet eatin' if they were sugar cane fed!! No I haven't Gus, but I will once I get situated up in Alaska! I live in a weird area. In TX, in order to be able to shoot or hunt on your own land you have to have a minimum of 10 acres; here I have 3.5. It was in my opinion expensive ( overpriced ), so instead I chose two Ruger New Model Super Blackhawks in 44 mag and replaced the grips with faux ivory . For home defense I had 44 special for 2 legged critters and 44 magnum for the 4 legged kind . The 44 mag DE was added because, single actions are slow to load . It would be faster to put a semi into action than to reload. I don't know if anyone had a 454 lever action rifle out at the time , otherwise I believe I would have taken that path . You Sir have bested me 😀.
I won't try claim to be expert at everything but I think personally a 357 magnum is under powered for Alaska. I did know moose was more dangerous then bear even. I mean moose are not very timid. The thing is a Alaska yukan moose species runs 30 miles a hour and males weigh 1200 to 1500 pounds. A female moose even is 700 pounds. I sure wouldn't want to be close to mama moose.
Howdy Brandon! True, however if it's what a person has available, then by all means go with it. They make some really powerful loads for 357 Magnum nowadays. If you want to see today's up close and personal interaction with 3 bull moose at my property, check out that video I just posted. And FYI, I did have my Colt King Cobra .357 Magnum with me at the time, and thankfully didn't have to use it. I was wishing I had put the 454 Casull in the truck instead. lol
Merry Christmas Alberto!! Thanks for watching! I have no problem carrying that 454 Casull through the alder thickets of Alaska. Another great "brush gun" caliber would be 45-70 if your should can handle it. The problem is that finding any lever action rifle in stock anywhere right now is almost impossible. My suggestion would be to go to the following online gun sellers and search their availability - you can sign up to be notified via email when they are available again: www.grabagun.com www.impactguns.com www.kygunco.com www.gunprime.com www.sportsmans.com If you find one you will order it through the seller and they will ship it to a local FFL dealer in your area who will facilitate the transfer.
Sorry Eric, the answer to that question is no. The 454 Casull, which has the same bullet diameter as the 45 Colt, but it generates a whole lot more pressure and power. Your best bet would be to get a 454 Casull lever action rifle. Then you can shoot both the 454 and 45 Colt in the same rifle
I had one of the first Rossi 454 rifles, I was not pleased at all, it fell apart, the tube loader was a different design than yours, half twist then you could pull tube, that failed after about 300 rounds and at times it would come out after I fired a round. , the barrel clamp near the front sight came loose, at the time no parts were available for repair, cycling of rounds jammed unless I used a round flat nosed bullet. Over all it was a substandard lever action 454.
WOW!! I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. So far (knock on good hard wood) I haven't had any issues with mine. Given what I want to use it for - bear protection - I certainly hope I don't. Thanks for the info as I'll keep an eye out for any of these issues developing. I really appreciate it!
Thanks Philip! I like the 20" as you get a little more velocity, thus more foot pounds of energy from the 20" barrel. If I need close-in support I have my Taurus Raging Bull 454 Casull.
Howdy! I have never loaded 460 S&W so I don't have any data readily available on the 460. Do you have either the Hornady or Speer reloading manuals? Those are my 2 primary references I use when developing loads. They will give you a good starting point. Both manuals are conservative with maximum loads compared to some other sources, but as I said, I usually start with them... then work up from there. I'm sorry I can't be of much more help! The other major consideration is what's available for powders and bullets. Right now I've already packed almost all of my gear and components away to ship to Alaska, so I haven't really been "shopping" for any materials recently. I have heard that things are pretty scarce. Basically I'd recommend this process: 1) Look in the manuals to see what bullets they make and pick 2 or 3 that look like they would accomplish your mission (I do not recommend going with the heaviest or the lightest to start with). Make a "shopping" list. Next see what primers are recommended (usually on the first page of the section for that caliber) and add to your list. Now, for the bullets you've selected from 2 sources pick 5 or 6 powders and add to your list. Once your list is complete (I like to do it on an Excel spreadsheet - but I'm a bit of a nerd!), start looking online - don't waste your time going to Bass Pro Shops, Cabelas, or Academy stores... even if they have anything, the overall selection is poor. I'd suggest looking at sites like Graf and Sons, MidwayUSA, Natchez Shooting Supply... or just Google the powders and bullets you have selected and see what comes up. Sorry I'm not much help!! Did you get one of those BFR's in 460??? I don't think my wrist could handle those... lol! Stay Safe my friend!!
@@thelonemoose4718 Thank you for the advice. I ended picking up the Hornady manual, Winchester primers and some IMR 4227 powder as listed. Soon I shall construct my first cartridge! Very exciting. The 460 isn’t as scary as people believe, the big S&W frame really handles the power. Cheers.
@@JTFU Just bought a 460 S&W 8.3/8" XVR. I am handloading 335 grain CPWNFPGC lead bullets with H110 fully loaded. It barks loud and kicks hard, make no mistake about that. But, the overall gun weight, proper grip, factory provided compensators, and solid stance, tends to neutralize most of it. It's also very accurate and shoots flat with a 100 yard zero. Given it's length and weight, it's surprisingly easy to access from a drop thigh tactical holster, and is fast becoming my favorite Big Bore Banger. Although it chambers a variety of .45 caliber rounds, I am, and would recommend only shooting .460 and .454 cartridges through it. Hopefully, people interested in the .460 S&W XVR have other handgun options designed and better suited for the shorter, lower velocity rounds. This thing is a big brother of a hammer, not a little brother's plinker. Hold on, and have at it!
Hi Alice!! Thanks for watching! I've seen that 45-70 revolver at a Cabelas store. I think that would just be way too much for me to handle. The 454 Casull is about at the top end of what I can handle accurately and enjoy shooting.
@@thelonemoose4718 I have a Ruger Alaskan in the 454 and I have a Magnum research revolver in the 4570 the 45-70 has less recoil than the 454 and on the plus side you can load it if your hand loading from wild to mild and have more bullet weights to choose from

Maybe you should look into a 450 Bushmaster. I believe Ruger makes one that is bold action and you could mount a scope on that. Or, you can get several large caliber AR-15 uppers, which is what I have... 450 BM, 458 SOCOM, 50 Beowulf. You can mount scopes on all of those.
The newer Rossi rifles can accept scope mounts or a picatiny rail. You just have to remove the rear sight. On mine I went with a pirating rail and a red dot. Was very easy to install and a red dot is about as fast as a peep sight
With 5 rounds, years of practice, and some heavy penetrations loads... if I can't take a bear down or turn it away in 5 shots, then the bear deserves a free meal!! lol.

That's really cool Rusty!! You've obviously stronger wrists than this old man does! Enjoy!!
Make sure you take the revolver with you always because I have a friend that had the 454 casual rifle from rossi and it keep jamming rounds when needed thank god he was only hunting for deer he returned his back to rossi and got a full return for purchase and purchase a Henry now he has no more problems.
Edward how long ago did he have trouble with the Rossi?
I never once loaded my 454 Rossi with the tube. It loads just fine from the side. It just has two options for loading-as the manual states. 😉
It gives you that Henry rifle option which is nice. Especially for unloading live ammo
I just got a brand new one today and it doesn't have the tube loading option, just has the side gate now.
@@davidseckman8604 Odd. the Knurled end of the feed tube has fine threads...
@firstjohn3123 mine doesn't have a knurled end, it's side gate load only. It was just bought new a couple months ago. So they must have changed it.
Sound, logical choices! Hard to beat that combination. Great , enjoyable video. Thanks
Thanks for your comment. I appreciate your watching the channel.

Thank you for the fantastic information sir! I've been looking at getting a .454 Casull 5.5" Super Redhawk to have with me while hiking in Montana. I will certainly be checking out Barnes Bonecrusher ammunition thanks to your recommendations. Wishing you and your kin a happy holiday season.
Thanks for the kind words! Happy Holidays to you and yours as well!!
I've got the 7.5" Super Redhawk 454. The recoil is violent and the noise is the loudest of any handgun I have ever shot.
Thank You every much and happy holidays to You as well.

You're quite welcome Barry!! Thanks for watching!!
The only handgun I have only fired once in my life and was done with it I put it right back down on the table it's such a violent recoil
Thank you for the link will look into it, I had a 4570 in the past .
You're quite welcome. Happy Holidays!!

@@thelonemoose4718 Cool
@@thelonemoose4718 Expensive, but the chest rig from Diamond D Leather in Wasilla, AK. Is excellent quality
Thanks G-5. My Raging Bull .454 Casull is my "go to" pistol in almost all bear/moose scenarios. It's just hard to beat!
OK Ken, that was too easy... lol. I ordered them from Diamond D Custom Leather. www.diamonddcustomleather.com
Great video, partner!
Thanks Dan!

Revolver.

OUCH!! I have no doubt that the 454 would do a number on the hogs... unless you run into a Hogzilla - Sasquatch's little brother!! lol!!!! @@thelonemoose4718 I've seen tracks of what I think was a hogzilla about 3 years ago. Never got to go after him unfortunately, covid shut everything down. I'll tell you, you're correct, hog hunting is so much fun! You just gotta be really mindful and don't get out of the bed of the truck.
No, unfortunately I don't have a working chronograph.
I was wishing I had put the 454 Casull in the truck instead. lol

Can a 45 Colt rifle be re chambered to 454 ?
Sorry Eric, the answer to that question is no. The 454 Casull, which has the same bullet diameter as the 45 Colt, but it generates a whole lot more pressure and power. Your best bet would be to get a 454 Casull lever action rifle. Then you can shoot both the 454 and 45 Colt in the same rifle
If you want to blow up the gun and possible die
Iwith long barrel power is upper than a 6” like raging bull 2000 ft lbs or more.....

New to reloading. I have a 460 S&W. any powder and bullet recommendations?
Cheers.

Just bought a 460 S&W 8.3/8" XVR.

I am free to think and express my thoughts as I see fit, and you have the freedom to choose not to view my channel if you find any part of my videos do not align with your belief systems. It is quite obvious by your nasty tone that trying to talk sense into you would be a waste of both of our time. Good luck in your future endeavors.
