  • Making the difficult decision about which of my lever guns would be the last to give up. Tough choice to make with all these wonderful Winchesters, Marlins, etc.
    Remember, value, rarity, ammo expense, beauty, history, etc. are not part of the criteria in these videos. It's just what do I think would be the best all-around choice for all the types of shooting I might WANT to do or NEED to do now and in the future.

    My great grandfathers lever action 30-30 Winchester that he bought out of the Sears and Roebucks catalog was the envy of my father and uncles for them growing up, so when my great grandfather passed it down to me before I could even walk, they were all a little sour. I still love shooting that rifle and it is one of my most prized possessions. Beautiful firearm

Now I'm here watching videos on the Henry rifles before his funeral and before I pick it up from my grandmother. It's bittersweet as this will forever be connected as a memory of my grandfather. For where I live, what I hunt and needs of security, the last lever I would give up would be a 44 mag or 357 mag. I could keep a favorite revolver for the same ammo, with versatility of two cartridges each and feel like I have all the bases covered. Plus I reload for both. A purely practical answer, as I'm not getting rid of my levers!

    • @theZombieAdrift
      @theZombieAdrift 2 роки тому +3

      Bingo, that was my thoughts as well. Guide gun length lever, and a roughly revolver chambered in the same, probably 44 mag for me for the extra spice - versatility unmatched imo - SHTF setup, hunting, defense, ammo availability and size/weight - only thing I'd consider otherwise might be a straight up guide gun, just because I love me some. 45-70 gov

But if i would need to choose a gun for selfdefence for example i would probably choose a more modern gun but i mean they do their job so if you like them and want one not only to shoot on the range you can be sure it is not neccesarely a bad choise.

    • @Albatross0913
      @Albatross0913 2 роки тому +6

      @@kuessebrama what matters for self-defense doesnt depend so much on what hun you're using as it does on how familiar you are with it. If you spend your time training with a .357 lever action and dont know your way around an AR-15 the lever action is going to be a much better choice for you. It's all about how well you've trained with your weapon of choice. I personally have a .357 SA for my home defense and I know my way around that gun than I do my sister's S&W for example. Self-defense is all about training.

    Hello. Me again.
    I have an old Sears Ted Williams 30-30 (a Winchester lever gun) that I got to replace a pre 64 44 magnum Winchester carbine that I had loaned to a classmate back in 1974. Ten years ago, he sent this rifle, made in 1959, as a replacement. It is pristine and a tack driver out to 200 yards. Original iron sights, no scope, of course, as the top eject doesn't work well with scopes.
    I have to admit, though, that my favorite lever gun is a Browning BLR 82, with a 4 round box magazine in .308 Winchester. 24 inch barrel, wonderfully smooth and strong action using a rack and pinion system to operate the bolt. It is the closest thing to a Winchester model 95 this side of heaven, and is supremely accurate. I got this rifle as a Christmas present in 1983 and it is a work of the gunmakers art.
    I wouldn't give up either rifle.

    The only problem I see with a lever gun in .45 LC is the anemic rim on the cartridge. That narrow rim is the reason Winchester never made a repeater in that caliber. That is the primary reason for the 44-40 or 44WCF cartridge. Had the .45LC been acceptable, Winchester would have made rifles in that caliber, including the Model 92., in the 19th century.
    Yeah, I know that the modern brass case is less likely to tear off the base of the cartridge on ejection, but the original .45 Colt casing was certainly prone to it.

    The Marlin 1894 and the 45 Colt are both classics and perfect in a lever action rifle or carbine. They are great for cowboy action shooting, plinking, hunting, and self defense. You can also add a Ruger Vaquero or Blackhawk in 45 Colt for a sidearm!

    It is amazing that you speak of loading issues in 357 lever guns. I have found the same difficulties in the SASS world. The 44s and 45s never have such difficulties … smooth as butter; but, the 357s are another story.
    My 1873 is specific to cartridge length, yes; but, slicker than me. My 92 is the same.
    We have had feed problems with Marlins; however, they don’t like 44 Special; but feed when loaded in 44 Mag cases (not a problem with the 92s.

    i picked that one too!! amateur here, never shot a lever action gun, but i carefully watched how you were shooting with it, carefully listened to your descriptions, and compared your insights with my visuals or what i was witnessing. you were basically "throwing" the bullets in it so no jamming or spring being too tight and no finger pinching (i really like that), not as long and lumbering, doesn't look as heavy actually light looking, not much kickback at all, lever action was smooth, bout the right size/very manueverable , versatile with the ammo, and you were hitting every target with it (no misses) which probably means more accurate. looks to be very fun,,,,, be perfect for playing "the rifleman". lol.

    I had a Winchester Miroku producted 405 Win chambered Model 95 ... and I sold it to pay bills about 8 years ago. Breaks my heart. I also had a pre-60 plebian model 94 in 30 WCF and it too was sacrificed. Ditton for a Marlin cowboy in 45 Colt, Marlin "Texan" 35 Rem converted to 356 Win, and many others.... I have recently been rebuilding my collection and now have three Rossi 94R's in 357 mag, 44 mag and 45 colt and I did manage to keep a 60's production Win 94 that I worked on replacing the barrel and furniture and re-cutting the chamber to 30-30 AI. It has a crescent butt plate and half octagonal/half round 24" barrel and is fitted with a Marble's fully adjustable tang sight. Great gun albeit a little rough finished due to my home gun smithing. But it's a shooter and I still have it. So I guess that's the one I kept...

    • @allenlindsey1175

      You just opened my eyes up to a entirely different world of lever actions.
      I had never heard of a "miroku" and Winchester rifle.
      Immediately I was Uhmazid....cause this last design from J.M.Browning addressed the issue that keeps 99% of all lever guns shooting accurately.
      Believe it or not the traditional way that lever guns hold their ammo in the tube creates changing barely resonace...which promotes different vibrations on the rounds..
      Each time a round leaves the tube the harmonics on the barrel change which leads to high speed wobbles.
      Having the rounds in a bottom magizine solves this issue.
      Anyway Thanks for telling me about this.

    Big bullet, plenty of stopping power, very common, and even in pistols, nice & manageable to shoot.
    And I've noticed in .45 pistols, REALLY good long range accuracy. That big bullet floats really nice at longer range.
    .45 lc has a ton of versatility.
