Rossi R92 454 Casull Function With Variety Of Ammo review

  • This is a shooting review of the Rossi 92 chambered in 454 Casull. I picked this up mainly to shoot 45 Colt without worrying about the pressure of the ammunition--like I need to with the much weaker action of my Uberti 1873. I wanted to check out several things I had heard about the rifle. First, some people online claimed that the safety would engage by itself which I never experienced. Second, some people online claimed that the 45 Colt would not cycle through the rifle. The only type of 45 Colt that didn't cycle were Magtech wadcutters that were significantly shorter than normal 45 Colt rounds. As such, I wouldn't blame the inability to cycle a niche round on the rifle or make more general statements about the gun. Third, the Marble sight is seemingly well thought of but be aware that the heaviest recoiling ammo can consistently knock the sight out of alignment.

FINALLY! been looking for a review of the rossi r92 in 454casull for weeks, i just bought one about a month back after 3 years of looking i found a 20" stainless at my LGS brand new $749.00, which i thought was a great price so i literally snatched it up and bought it on the spot! Close to 45-70 power but holds 10rds instead of 4 or 5, perfect hog hunters rifle. The hornady 240gr xtp out of the 20" barrel was chronographed at about 2300fps

$750 is an absolute steal right now, about half of what the stainless ones are going for on gunbroker. I got mine as a companion for my Ruger Alaskan, which has jumped from about $900 up to nearly $2000. It is crazy how much these types of guns are selling for right now.

It's been about 3 years since I found mine the same as yours. I passed one up stupidly 8 years prior to buying mine but I guess the wait was worth it. Mine was on consignment from a dude that bought guns but didn't shoot them any he wanted 275.00 for his and I almost broke my arms and legs trying to get it paid for fast enough.
With ammo the way it is I hope you reload and have had a chance to enjoy it. It is one of my favorite guns to shoot. In case you don't know if you remove the rear sight there are screws to mount a scope mount or picatiny rail. Rossi has mounts and so does noebulletmolds.com. also a good place to get high quality mold at a working man's price

@@biggunshandguns3687 wow $275 is a great price, i looked on gun broker this morning only 2 available $1600.00 and $1800.00 both used with wear marks. Yeah ammo is crazy high and hard to find for most odd ball calibers but i got lucky (one of the main reasons for me buying this gun) my local gun store has hornady 240gr xtp ($30 for 20rd) and magtec ($28 for 20rds) and they're always in stock, with them priced that cheap i haven't seen the need to start reloading for it

@@biggunshandguns3687 I actually don't reload. Perhaps the strangest thing about ammo prices is that I can find 45 Colt for about $40-$45 per box, the same as it was before the craziness while a box of 45 acp has jumped from about $18 a box online to $45 now. I don't see 454 ammo too often but when I do it is about the same as pre-panic pricing. Very weird.

  • @Prepare2Survive

Advertised velocity on ammo boxes might actually be when the ammo is shot from a handgun. Shooting it in a rifle can get you over 300 fps more velocity with calibers like this.

    • @ronquixote1739
      @ronquixote1739  3 роки тому

It was interesting to me that the recoil impulse increased with the stated velocity but that the one box that didn't list the velocity had the most ooomph, suggesting it had the highest velocity. I was really happy that the rifle fed with pretty much every type of 45 Colt and 454 Casull--except for the wadcutter type 45 Colt and I don't blame any rifle for not cycling that specialty load.

I bought one of the Puma 92's in 454 Casull almost 10 years ago, mine's stainless steel with a 20" barrel and I wouldn't trade it for a Winchester or Henry. The fit and finish is top notch, I like the flat sights instead of the buckhorns the new rifles have and it will cloverleaf 5 rounds of my handloads at 50 yards all day. I must have close to 1000 rounds through it by now and six deer to it's credit and it's never had a hiccup and is as smooth as butter, it's cycled anything I ever put in it although I've never tried wadcutters. It's favorite load is a Laser Cast 255gr. hardcast SWC with a moderate charge of IMR 4227 for around 1700 fps at the muzzle. Recoils not bad and and it just messes up anything it hits. It really gets brutal with the 240gr. Hornady's, from that 20" barrel in that 7 lb. rifle, my Chrony reads 2325 fps give or take and my handloads can push past that but why put the rifle through it ? You can go out shooting for an afternoon with my handcast 230gr. TC, powder coated bullets in 45 Colt or 454 brass with 5 grains of the right powder and bang steel for penny's, actually a nickel a round. That rifle is one you'd have to pry out of my hands.

Just picked up an R92 carbine in .357 and was rather impressed with the wood, as well as the fit and finish. There is a small gap between the stock at the top on the butt plate, but other than that it is very tight. Perhaps they have stepped up their game a little due to the bad reputation they had. Yeah, getting rid of the superfluous safety ASAP.

WOW when did these get so expensive? I've had one for 12ish years. I suppose all the straight wall deer hunting states and gun hording drove prices up. I removed the safety and put a peep sight in it's place, a lot handier than that flip up on the stock.

When the panic hit, gun companies responded by producing their best selling and/or highest margin guns--which meant they stopped making many/any lever guns and revolvers. They are now coming back but I suspect with inflation we won't see these type guns back in the $650 range again.

I bought one 18 years ago, was not happy with it, safety was sloppy, it fed 45 colts perfectly, 454s would jam with anything over a 240grn, the feed tube would twist loose after 4 or 5 shots, the ammo tube would also slide out from recoil, my gunsmith fabbed me a new coller to keep the tube from moving. The loading action was rough compared to a Henry..
Over all I give the rifle a 5.. would never buy one again...

    • @ronquixote1739

I'd heard of the safety issue but didn't experience it. I had also heard of the magazine tube shooting itself loose. Maybe BrazTech fixed the safety issues when they moved to the screw in magazine tubes? I haven't had any issues with 454 ammunition regardless of the grain.

If the recoil didn't cause the rear sight to partially fold the actual sight picture would be fine. Welcome to hyperinflation! You're right that a Rossi gun with a $1000 list price SHOULD be several hundred less than that. It isn't, though. I found a Ruger Alaskan for $1000 - about $150-$200 higher than it should have been - but they have been going for nearly $2000 on gunbroker. It is very strange that revolvers and lever guns have seen demand driven spikes in prices while ARs are still about the same price range--never mind that our overlords in DC aren't babbling about banning revolvers and lever guns.
