Best song about Alien abduction ever!
And of course, once you hear the first part of the song, you have to finish it.
Lol
He went voluntarily
Lmao what are you talking about? 😅😅😅😅
@@charlesparker838 You never read the lyrics? Last verse of the song, "I thought that they were angels, But to my surprise, We climbed aboard their starship, We headed for the skies" Get it now?
Can you imagine growing up in a time where you turn on the radio and you basically hear. great songs all the Time with bands like Styx, Queen, scorpions and Boston and the list goes on and on. I’m old enough to have been able to listen to all of them and it was a really great time with really great music!
We totally lucked out and didn't know it. I'm 60 and 70's music is my favorite decade. 60's and 80's are full of great music also. My kids know and love this music too. I always say "I raised them right", lol. Have a good one!✌🎶
@@ageofaquarius6176 - our kids, ages 18 and 20 love the music too!
My son (age 21) wore his Styx shirt when he was deployed to the Middle East. He got a lot of comments that he was too young to know about Styx, but he said his mom raised him on Styx. I agree AgeofAquarius - we shared awesome music with our kids that we both can love and enjoy!
It was mostly crap then too. People only remember the good and forget the bad.
Yes, we saw the greatest music ever made: from 70s Rock, to 70s Country & 70s Funk to 80's Rock and then 90s Rap.
Rock died after Grunge Rap and Country have become produced Pop.
When you see someone in their 60’s, just know we had great music growing up.
Not just 60s, I'm in my mid-50s and there was never a bad song on the radio. Except Culture Club, that is. lol!
I’m 55, saw them Live @ The Seattle Center Coliseum in 1980 ! My 1st of many of the Rock Concerts I attended growing up ! I was 12 ! 😊
Agree 💯 %.
@@jodij6280 Culture club? they’re not that bad.
@@afoolsbabybear2266 Everyone has different tastes. When I first heard them I thought a girl was singing.
Dennis DeYoung is one of the most underrated vocalists in rock. Dude had pipes!
Still does! ❤
NO DOUBT !
One of my favorite singers…love Dennis’s voice. He can still sing too, being in his 70’s. ❤
@@kevinmcpherson4379 Well, he hasn't toured in years.
Agree, i think "Lady", is a really good show of his voice.
You HAVE to do "Renegade" he would love, and Babe she would love.
renegade definitely and grand illusion
Yes Renegade! Isabel steering you in the right direction.
styx lorelei IS amazing
Love to see Amber listen to babe
Lady
Styx named after the river that separates the lands of the living from the lands of the dead in Greek mythology. They spell it the way spelled in the Myths. Dennis DeYoung is incredible on a keyboard and an amazing vocalist.
Tommy Shaw was also part of Styx.
Enjoy
Blessed Be
Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
Have y'all seen this, about the River Styx, in an episode of "The Simpsons"?
ua-cam.com/video/gdnvOQBOjow/v-deo.html
Greek mythology. Love it, and Styx is one of my fave 80s soft rock bands.
Blessed Be
the new singer of Styx is Lawrence Gowan . listen his song from his solo career .. Criminal Mind . Strange Animal ... Moonlight desire .. 😎👍
Amber is clearly an old soul. She's been here many times before. She picks up on things (by her facial reaction) that defies her time and place. Role reversal: Jay is of the earth, but she is of the universe...
I'll say this, Amber is more timeless with her appreciations. Don't really truck with all that galactic stuff (sounds a bit hippie for this old punk rocker... all love still) but I think, materially, you're right. That said, Jay is wonderfully captivated by some things she isn't. Good pairing!
Amber will absolutely truly fall in love with Styx when she hears their song, "Babe." ✌️
This!!!!
Uh huh.
The song that broke up Styx.....I hated it..still do .
@@TheTempleOfBoomno one asked get lost idiot
This is a shortened version of the song that you listened to. That's why the transition from soft to hard seems so abrupt. Go back and listen to the studio version off of the album Grand Illusion.
I was waiting for the reaction to the bridge/breakdown. Never heard it without it.
If you don't this was pointless, FFS!
Agree. You missed the best part of the song-spacey ride.
And then listen to The Grand Illusion.
Or try return to paradise live in Chicago
"We definitely have to hear more of Styx" - I feel like that is a bit of an understatement :)
crystal ball is another great song
If you see this comment...
Listen to the album version because there is a big piece missing from this video...
an amazing synthesizer/keyboard work that musically emulates the sounds of when, according to the story, he "climbed aboard the starship and headed for the skys". They played the entire song with the synthesizer solo when I saw them live in Chicago and it was amazing.
Styx is definitely one of my best concert memories.
Second this. In case y'all come back around to this song - that keyboard solo is a cool breakdown in the middle
Yes! They are missing out! They would absolutely love the missing portion of this amazing song!
Is this the "Radio Edit"?
I agree, that keyboard part is integral to the song, I skipped back to the beginning of the vid because I missed hearing it, but its definitely an edit, it cuts out his vocal crescendo also.
I’m so bad because I like the song better without it 🤦♀️ Forgive me!
This song hits me hard everytime. My best friend died in a car crash at 27 years old. That transition doesn't make it any less emotional with those lyrics. That transition is the most emotional part.
Reflections in the waves spark my memory. Some happy, some sad. I think of childhood friends, and the dreams we had. We lived happily forever, or so the story goes, but somehow we missed out on the pot of gold. But we'll try best that we can to carry on.
A gathering of angels appeared above my head. They sang to me this song of hope, and this is what they said, they said
"Come sail away"
I really have a hard time keeping it together through this song. It really hits hard. It's a beautiful song.
Jordan: "I thought we were going to get into something a little heavier..."
Me: "Just wait."
You have to check out "Renegade" or "Lady" next time you do Styx.
I was thinking the same thing. Growing up, I quickly learned that it was Styx' trademark to start off with a slow ballad before slamming you back in your seat.
You would have though he learned his lesson when he did Free Bird...
Hahaha.... totally thought the same thing.
Completely agree with both those songs for their next Styx reactions... great choices
This was the short version. There's a great "cosmic" interlude in the full version that you missed out on.
Yes I was hoping this was the long version of the song instead!
yeah, seriously! it's one of the best parts of the song, right before the where the lyrics mention aliens! You should check out the 6 minute version.
Thank you. I thought something was missing. Totally forgot about the synth interlude. But it seemed kinda short. 😎
The single edit is even worse. It clocks at 3:12 and also removes the second verse.
@@xoxxobob61 same I was expecting to here it too
Can you imagine? I grew up in the 1970's/1980's. We had these fantastic songs coming out EVERY single week!
I was a teenager in the 80s, every time I turned on the radio there was nothing but great music.
I concur
Can you imagine when they played this song at the highschool dance and trying to dance to it? ;o]
me too! head phones and bunk beds
OMG! That is exactly how I listened. 😊
Simply put, this tune has two movements.
Can't be said enough: you gotta do the Styx song 'Renegade'.
and also Domo Arigato (Mr Roboto Album)
@@steveeverett1736 The song is called "Mr. Roboto".
@@steveeverett1736 yuck
Totally agree with you on Renegade. :)
Blue Collar Man also
Your next Styx song should be “Babe”
Ditto this!
Babe, I love you!
💯❤🤗
Babe is a bit pop. Not their best song.
THIS.
Amber's expression of shock halfway through the song was priceless! Totally caught off guard. I was like, "Wait for it...wait for it..."
Styx, Kansas, Boston, sounds of the late 70s and early 80s. Those where the days when one hit wonders were better than many of the "stars" of today.
Oh yes...they need to review "Dust In The Wind"! 🔥👍🏻🎶✨💕
Some good 70s music right here ,,,
Mid 70s ,... This is a 70s Party ,,
Bloody damn straight. I’m 60, and I know this music very well.
Sailing, Christopher Cross.
Cool Change, Little River Band.
Sundown, Gordon Lightfoot.
Baker Street, Gerry Rafferty.
Fire and Rain, James Taylor.
That would be a normal set of music on a soft rock station in the late 70's.
I didn't quite appreciate it as much at the time... I was into Yes, Pink Floyd and ELO.
“Renegade” and “Blue Collar Man” are a must. I think Jordan would really like these, it’s the heavier side of Styx, but not heavy enough that Amber wouldn’t like it 😉
Facts
I agree these to songs rock
Mr Roboto.
I was about to suggest Renegade! My fav Styx song and a nice contrast to the style of this one.
Forgot about Renegade. Yes its a must. Thanks you for reminding me!!!!
Try "Lady" - if Amber doesn't cry I will be surprised. The live one is okay, but please do the original studio, or 1995 re-recorded version. It is the most beautiful rock love song ever written and recorded. Lilting piano introduction that blows Come Sail Away "away" and then drops into the most harmonic thunderous chord riffs you can imagine. It just effin SOARS. Styx had a unique ability to make power chords angelic and doing it as part of a transition that made your jaw drop. No one else comes close.
Also "Babe"
Wow, I've really never been a big fan of this group, I've never heard anyone that had so much info...I was listening to ACDC, Van Halen, Journey....to many to count. This was a pretty good though 🙂
For a Dennis DeYoung song that moved me, I have to go with his solo release, 'Desert Moon'. I don't know if it's the nostalgia or the kind of touching music video that accompanied it on MTV but it got me 'right there'(tm)
@@rhondamcbath6279 I guess a group that gets you through most of the traumatic moments of adolescence can inspire a certain amount of passion - LOL. Here is a tip. Styx became REALLY big after the album Equinox came out. Equinox is just sublime. In addition to Lady, it has songs reflecting my comments and is the pinnacle of Styx's melodic creativity and achievement, IMHO. You might like; Lorelei, Mother Dear, Lonely Child, and and Suite Madame Blue (an absolute Opus). Headphones, headphones headphones, and do Suite Madame Blue last, lying on a bed, in the dark - LOL. Go for the full 14 year old experience. I have goosebumps writing this...........
Lady was Styx first hit
Best concert lineup I’ve been to- Styx, REO Speedwagon and Journey. Thank you life for letting me live in a time with music like this to grow up with. ❤️❤️❤️
Was that a Day on the Green at Oakland Coliseum?
WOW!!
I saw that lineup in Hartford in the early 2000’s awesome!
I was just typing that when I saw your entry. These 3 bands got all the radio play in the early 80s.
So very lucky ❤❤❤
This was not the full version of the song. Missing the synthesizer solo
This was the original radio version. Styx was always considered a progressive rock band. I consider them excellent! Their albums Grand Illusion and Pieces of Eight are their best. Try my favorite song of of pieces of eight ' queen of spades'!
Exactly! They missed the most interesting part of the song!
@@bgaona Yeah they did! I was disappointed 😞
I was hoping that this was going to have the keyboard interlude, but unfortunately...
Cornerstone was good too, and Crystal Ball is amazing.
I was only interested in their reaction to that part. lol
"Babe." You need to hear "Babe" by these guys. You'll love it just as much as this one, if not more. And for a more modern song from them, "Show Me the Way."
Show Me The Way is a great song. Not sure I'd consider it 'modern', it came out 31 years ago. They're still around, they just released a new album a couple of months ago.
@@jonlate4581 Jesus...
Had it been _that_ long? Good lord. I somehow got old.
I'm sure someone has already said this, but I will anyway. The thing where it starts slow/soft, and then hits you with that rock beat, is pretty much the definition of the power ballad. I love, love, love STYX!!!
Another example of the creativity of the musicians back then. We were so blessed to grow up with so much great music in the 60's, 70's and 80's.
Dennis DeYoung is the lead singer, Tommy Shaw is the guitarist. "Babe" and "Lady" are songs to listen and react to.
I always got confused Styx Lady with Little River Band Lady. Both sre awesome!
@@dianeorr8937 Don't forget the Kenny Rogers version.
@@marcmarc1967 - Kenny Roger's Lady was written by Lionel Richie.
Both excellent numbers!!!
Tommy Shaw also was a lead singer in the band. He wrote and sang Blue collar Man and I believe he sang renegade as well.
Check out the full album titled "The Grand Illusion".
Every track is pure gold
When they were at their most prog'y. If they'd have continued down that vein, it would have been so much better.
Yes!!!🙌🏼
I love that album. My Mom used to get incredibly angry at me for repeatedly singing along with it while wearing headphones. The grand illusion is still applicable today.
I bought the "Grand Illusion" album when I was around 18. I was amazed at how every song on the album was fantastic.
@@dougthompson5449 I was 17 I think, and it definitely stood out. It managed to be both progressive and incredibly listenable at the same time, which is difficult to do.
Oh, I just checked and I was 15 actually. Maybe I didn't really discover it for a couple years.
That slow build of song is something that seems to have been lost during the quest for radio play as artists strive to write 3 minute songs. So glad you got to enjoy this.
I'm so happy I grew up in the 70's and 80's. No bad songs (mostly, lol)!
You should definitely listen to the studio version. This is a shortened version without a really cool trippy interlude and an even more triumphant final verse.
Yep. That synthesizer solo is amazing, along with the string synth going through a phaser.
This is NOT a live version, just a single cut, made short for radio play.
If you weren’t expecting this ending then wait till you hear “Renegade”🤘🏼
"Fooling Yourself" is probably the best Styx tune for mental health.
My VERY first concert (at 15) was STYX the Grand Illusion Tour. Mom didn't want me there by myself at that age, so she bought 3 tickets, and went as my boyfriend and my Chaperone. She stayed up in the 4th row seats, while my boyfriend and I made our way down to the front against the board. At one point, Tommy Shaw knelt down in front of my boyfriend, and gave him an up-close and personal display, a real-time how-to of one of his exquisite guitar solos. Soon after that, Dennis DeYoung strode across the stage, and with a flourish, handed me one of the roses that had been tossed up on stage by fans. Tommy Shaw then gave my boyfriend a bit of a high-five, as we were lifted up over the crowd control barrier, and escorted off, stage-left, so we could easily return to our seats. STYX ended up being Mom's most favorite band of-all-time, and "Come Sail Away" is hands down her favorite song. She passed away Feb 9, 2022, just a few days short of her 89th birthday. She specifically requested to have "Come Sail Away" played at her Memorial. Not sure who's cooler... The band, or Mom...
I was wearing a Styx concert t-shirt when my wife and I got married, can't listen to a complete song without breaking down. My wife passed away last October.
Oh that is so sad.
We need eternal friends.
Always remember NEVER regret! Love and hope to you!
I am so sorry. You know that she is still with you. Watching over you.
So sorry for your loss I know it hurts but sail away and carry on !!!
Hang in there..Time makes it a little easier..The good memories will never die.
Styx is named after the river leading to the Afterlife Underworld in Greek Mythology.
"I thought that they were angels
But to my surprise
They climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies"
How lucky am I..from Elvis to Queen to Styx to Penatonix to Homefree and I'm 75 yrs.old!! Feel blessed.
The River Styx separates the realm of the living from the dead in old Greek mythology. This brings to mind a great song called "Don't Pay the Ferryman" by Chris de Burgh. Charon is the ferryman who takes the dead souls over for a coin in payment. Don't pay him until you get to the other side, the song warns.
also read once that Styx was the river of hate.
Wow I had completely forgotten about Don’t Pay the Ferryman. Great tune Thanks
@@vdoman I think it's the river of Hades not hate.
@@MrJoseph1227 I could be wrong. I do know about Charon and the ferryboat, but I thought I read somewhere bout 9 rivers in Hell, and that STYX was the river of hate..
Love Chris DeBurgh and Don’t pay the ferryman!!!!
I love how Amber didn’t close her eyes or sway and Rob didn’t move his head for a full minute into the song,. You both just stared at the video wide eyed, could tell how the song was grabbing you from the start. The advantage to knowing the songs though is knowing exactly when the transition is coming and watching your faces for the reaction at that moment!
For Rob and his love of piano someday try a lesser known/played Billy Joel song called Billy The Kid
Captain Jack, from the same album, would also be a good listen.
I'm so Glad Amber noticed that Line in particular , who's too say that they are not from this EARTH 🌎. 🎸🎶
I'm a GenX. I was born in 1968. We had bell bottoms and roller skates. Disco and rock. Michael Jackson (Thriller) and Styx. We lived in a generation where there was no bias, elections were fairly won, and there were only 2 genders. You guys had to be there to see it. It was a glorious time. Have fun and peace out.
"This isn't usual". There's nothing "usual" about the music of Styx. I've seen them in concert twice. Absolutely magical.
I saw Styx in concert years ago, I believe in Cincinnati, Ohio. Kansas opened for them
I saw them as a warm up band for Blue Oyster cult in the 70's. They were great.
I got to see Dennis Deyoung perform with the Jacksonville symphony. Magic.
Dennis Deyoung has the voice of an angel, but Tommy Shaw, the lead guitarist, also has an amazing voice!
I prefer Tommy, actually. He saved that band from oblivion.
@toronto daddy it's true. I love Dennis but he was into that whole Mr roboto crap.
Tommy had one of the most underrated voices in all rock... but he was a power house.
@toronto daddy Tommy has a MUCH better voice and is way more controlled than Dennis.
@toronto daddy - it's true. Their biggest hits came when Tommy joined the band.
I thought that they were angels. But to my surprise…..they climbed aboard their starship and headed for the skies 😂🤙🏻
"You, Babe" is great by Styx
After 1985 no human will ever know what it was to live for real and to listen to our music at that time. I am glad i know what music is.
That was a shorter 'radio' version. In the middle was a long instrumental. What is nice about Styx, is that there are three members that sing lead. You could not have started with a better song than 'Come Sail Away', but I would recommend 'Castle Walls', 'Crystal Ball', 'Babe' (their first major hit), 'Snowblind'....ah so many hits. Thank you for hitting Styx!
yeah, you guys haveeeeee to listen to the other version, that mid song instrumental they do is the besttt part of the song!
Definitely, I don't think I'd ever heard this short version. They always played the longer album version on classic rock radio when I heard this growing up. Very disappointing not to hear that instrumental, such a key part of the song. I vote for a another reaction to the proper version. You'll love it.
Styx is a very underrated band, got to see them in concert once, they were awesome!!
I seen them 3 x and they delivered every time
I've seen them too..one of the best concert I've been to..
@@mrflipvideodude 🙂
I never saw Styx in concert, but I once saw Dennis DeYoung. I can't remember most of the songs he did, but this was definitely one of them.
Styx. 1978. Hammersmith Odeon, London. Awesome show!!
Styx "the grand ilusion" one of the best albums of that era!!
Dennis DeYoung. One of the most beautiful voices.
For a “trippy” experience, as Amber would call it, they should listen to “Too Much Time On My Hands!”
definitely Too Much Time on My Hands. I was working at a record stores in one of my first jobs and I loved Styx. I'd also recommend stuff from the Police like: Don't Stand So Close to me , Synchronicity and Every Breathe You Take
Great choice- one of my favorites! Clever - tongue n cheek lyrics☺
"Show me the Way" is great song by Styx and with all the craziness in the world the message really holds up today.
This was the song I always listed to when we found out my then 14 year old son had cancer. It somehow helped me.
Amen. Makes me cry.
I always think of the Peter Frampton song from Frampton comes alive.
Love that song
That song helped me so much at a hard time in my life
Styx had many great songs, my favorite was one of their last "Show me the Way"
Two Styx songs that you’d probably most enjoy are “Lady” & “Renegade”.
"Man in the wilderness" "Castle Walls" "suite madame blue" are a must!!!
Three of my favorites! I like the way you think!
OK YOU GUYS.......FOR REAL.........WATCHING YOU GUYS IS LIKE REDISCOVERING THE MUSIC I HAVE LISTENED TO FOR 30 YEARS. YOU GUYS ROCK.....THANK YOU
Styx always makes me feel so happy!! Being a sailor, hearing it takes me back out on the boat with my crew!! The spelling of STYX comes from the mythological river in Greek mythology. You should listen to Mr. Roboto. By the way, the lead on "Come Sail Away" was sung by Dennis De Young Thank you for bringing us these great memories!!
“Fooling Yourself” is one of many great ones Styx recorded. Paradise Theater is a masterpiece of an album not to mention their earlier stuff
I was lucky enough to see Paradise Theater live.
There is a song from the album “Equinox” called “Lorelei”. This would be for Amber…
Lorelei was their second top 40 hit.
Yes one of my favorite Styx songs!!!
Great suggestion.
This is STYX there entire career is music like this
My brother and I are getting matching tattoos for our mom who passed away - the line "but we'll try, best as we can, to carry on"
This was my mom's favorite song ever *well, rivaled with Bob Segers turn the page*..... and we both have been singing it since we could speak. Can't wait to honor her that way
Love this song, and love Styx! Grew up listening to this group (blasting from my sister's stereo). They had so many great songs, including "Babe", "Too Much Time On My Hands", and "Mr. Roboto." FYI - Styx was a river in Greek mythology where the souls of the recently deceased were ferried to the underworld.
Yes... Babe!
Miss America too. I think he'll like that. JY let's loose on it.
I don't understand the love around here for Mr roboto. Absolute dreck in my opinion, and the nadir of Styx.
And, For the Record - You haven't done Styx until you've done " *_Renegade_* ".
I had the 45.
Absolutely must do Renegade.
Blue Collar Man - the hidden jewel on Renegade
Head banging before head banging was a thing!
Right!
I'm so glad I was born in 70 and grew up listening to this kind of music and still do! All of the songs by Styx are awesome
I just can't imagine anyone not knowing STYX and this song!
"Babe" and "Grand Illusion" are must listen to from Styx!
Please!! Not Babe!!! First of all that's my nickname and I cried enough when my girlfriend left me and this album came out and that song was a big hit!!! And I went to go see them live and sat there crying while they sang the song at the Forum in LA ...I don't need to hear it again!!! ... OK... I like a good cry too...
Right out of the 70's, time to reminisce. They have so many killer songs, a few of my favorites are Blue Collar Man, Renegade, and Crytal Ball. Music is food for the souls so bon appétit.
"Miss America"
"Man in the Wilderness"
"Suite Madam Blue"
"Lady"
"Lorelei"
"Half-Penny, Two-Penny"
@@centuryrox Yes, I should have put Lady up there.
Styx has several hit songs that start slow, then rock out latersuch as Come Sail Away, Suite Madame Blue.
Growing up in the 70s 80s turn on the radio hear all the classic music
Pianist and vocalist Dennis DeYoung has an incredible voice, and you absolutely have to give "Lady" a listen.
Also you gotta listen to Angry Young Man ( Fooling Yourself )
Although Dennis DeYoung is no longer with Styx, he still performs on his own. Styx is still making albums today and just started a new tour. Next try "Heavy Metal Poisoning" or "Grand Illusion" These are songs where they rock. "Babe" and "Lady" are by Dennis and to his wife, both are top 10 hits in their day. These are slow songs.
Lady starts out slow, but doesn't end that way.
I saw Dennis DeYoung in Palm Springs in 2006. He was magical.
Fun fact, Gowen, who was popular in the 80's is now the lead singer for Styx
Dennis de Young could tickle those ivory’s and sing like no one else! So glad to see young people getting into my era of music!
Dennis Deyoung ...pure brilliance
Indeed, the angels were ETs. Styx was "Ancient Aliens" before "Ancient Aliens." You gotta hear the full version with the trippy bridge. It teases the Big Reveal and makes for a more dramatic buildup. I generally like live versions, but this one doesn't do the song justice, and reactors always end up with it, so it's probably on top of the search results. ua-cam.com/video/eYCFrcCqh7Q/v-deo.html
Yes, I just commented about the cooler version. :)
SAD the picked this version, it is an edited single cut for short play on radio. Very sad they did not get the full song...
Yep, I was waiting for the full version of the song with the cool bridge too.
Yeah, you guys should listen to the studio version now. This version is only about half the song, there's a great instrumental section in the middle they cut out. Radio edits did that a lot with prog rock songs back in the day.
This is good but the full "Studio" version you will Absolutely love.
Hey Squad, there is a longer version of this song. So many memories from this time.
Yes, I wanted to see their reaction to that trippy synth break
Yes. In my many comments begging them to do this song, I actually mentioned they should do a lyric video instead of the official video, since the official video is the single version and cuts out the entire middle portion of the song where all the cool music is. Hopefully they'll listen to this song on their own outside the channel so they can hear it in its full version.
They need to hear the full version...
@@bsanderfer hearing this version you can't say you heard the song because it's not the same without the synths in the interlude.
@@evilvolts I agree with you. The single version butchers the song.
Saw Styx in 78. I got cig filters for ear plus (gun range trick) and still my ears were ringing 6PM the next day.
Rush without ear plugs came close. But the music was written for LOUD, that's where it all comes through "balanced".
"This isn't usual!" Truth.
Tommy Shaw is a great guitarist that doesn’t get enough credit. Grand Illusion great album
He's a great singer too
@toronto daddy it's all relative I guess. Who ye are comparing him to.
Tommy Shaw didn't even play guitar for his Styx audition. He was hired because he could sing JC's part in Lady.
For more Styx I would recommend two of their slightly longer epic songs - Castle Walls or Suite Madame Blue - you'll love either one of them
Yes! Those are good suggestions for a deeper dive into their music.
I'd go with several other songs off this album. Grand Illusion, Fooling Yourself or Miss America
@@melprophet1936 Thank you my friend !
Suite is probably my favorite Styx song.
I almost suggested Castle Walls since it's part of "The Grand Illusion" but figured I would start at the opening song
I am so glad you "caught" the best part "I thought that they were angels but to my surprise......."
Styx .. sweet madame blue
Dennis DeYoung is one of the GREATEST singers and writers EVER! Check out his last tour and it's still this good!!!
"Lady" and "Suite Madame Blue" are a couple of must listens.
"Lady" for sure.
having been to over 20 Styx Concerts.... I say to you Welcome Aboard.....
Absolutely love love Styx, i was born 1961, and am very lucky.
"Fooling Yourself" is a really satisfying Styx song; it's aged well. "Crystal Ball" highlights some beautiful guitar playing from Tommy Shaw.
The lead guitarist, Tommy Shaw, also sings lead vocals & wrote many of their songs. "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)", "Renegade", "Blue Collar Man", and "Boat On The River" (this one features a mandolin and accordian) are a few of my favorites by Shaw.
To me, Dennis wrote almost all of their top songs. There is no Styx without Dennis DeYoung.
Love boat on the river
@@Hollingsworth2781 I agree. Current Styx without DDY is just a cover band with bad botox. Bury the hatchet & get back together for the fans before it's too late.
I was around when they started, I grew up about 50 miles south of them. They actually played at my high school shortly after recording their very first album, and "Lady" was their first hit. Shaw may be a good guitar player, and yes, he wrote and sang some of their songs, but the sound that sent them to the top of the charts was Dennis DeYoung, plain and simple. And for you fans of Dennis, he is still singing and recording (although with the feud going on between Shaw and DeYoung, it's not likely they will ever get back together as a group). Matter of fact, look up one of Dennis' newest, "Isle of Misanthrope" here on You Tube. ;) (if you do listen, listen carefully to the very last line of the song, and watch the images on the screen, it references this exact song, Come Sail Away. ;) )
@@cattlejax Dennis a pain to work with, but he was the founding member of the bans, wrote most of their really big hits and is one of the more iconic singers in the business.
A lot of songs from back in the day had complex switch-ups and tempo changes, alternating lead singers, and other poetic and artistic touches. We didn't care if you could dance all the way through it because we danced like nobody was watching 🙂. The music was great (most of it, anyway) because the musicians cared about the stories and the songs. There's a lot of poetry in all those songs.
So well said. Yes!
Real musicians not just an image
Another GREAT Styx tune for you to listen to is Queen of Spades.
Styx's "Too much time on my hands" - one of my favorites, is a must listen. Also, I heard another group the other day you need to check out: Kansas - "Carry on wayward son", "Dust in the Wind" and "Point of no return".
"Dust in the Wind" is EPIC.
Kansas is wonderful.". "Dust in the Wind" a mystick song.
If you haven't watched the "Live at Darryl's House" with Tommy Shaw, give it a watch. They do Renegade and Too Much Time on My Hands, and both are well worth listening to.
Lead singer on this song is Dennis DeYoung, who is no longer with the group. Lawrence Gowan replaced him.
Dennis sang on some songs, the more ballad or Broadway type songs, while guitarist Tommy Shaw sang on others, the more rock songs.
Guitarist James 'JY' Young sang a couple.
Try Renegade or Too Much Time On My Hands next, which features Tommy on vocals.
Tommy was on Daryl's House. He can still get way up there. He's one of my all time faves
Love the info.. Amazing. Thank you!
@@laritownsend2527 I saw that, it was excellent.
@@dianeorr8937 You're Welcome.
Dennis was not all ballads or Broadway. He wrote 7 out 8 their top ten hits. Dennis is the reason Styx had any fame. Without Dennis writing Lady, Styx would have never received any national fame and that was with John Curulewski not Tommy Shaw. Those who put down Dennis put down Styx.
"God bless you, Eric Cartman"- Dennis De Young, 1996.
Mr. DeYoung has repeatedly credited this song's appearance in the 2nd season of South Park as what basically brought the band back into the public's focus. From 1983 to 1996, he had one inquiry into using Styx's music. After South Park, the floodgates opened.
He is so lucky, because she's so pretty.
Styx is an iconic band with a HUGE catalog! Dennis DeYoung (lead singer) has such a distinct voice! Classically trained! All of them are amazing musicians.
Yes indeed well put!
Agree!
Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw on guitar. Fabulous combo.
@@recoveringbaptist2749 💯
who's classically trained?
Lots of great Styx stuff out there - the albums "Grand Illusion " and "Pieces of Eight" are masterpieces. A very underappreciated song is "Snowblind", though they had a ton of hits. Dennis DeYoung was the lead there, though Tommy Shaw also sang lead on a lot of them, and Big Jim had some too. You can tell a difference between songs that Dennis wrote and those that Tommy wrote, they typically have different vibes, but it's all great!
Snowblind was a big radio hit in my area.
Totally agree about Snowblind!
Can't wait until you hear more Styx...Babe and Lady
We were all sitting here after Amber talking bout the angels with that big smirk on our faces just waiting for the next line. ;)
NO! "LADY" should be the next song. Great, great, great song.
