I was dating a girl in the late 80's...She entered a radio station contest titled "why i want to see Styx with my special one"....She WON!!! We were driven from Little Rock Arkansas to the pyramid in Memphis in a chauffeured limousine...Given a steak dinner and taken to the Styx concert.....Anter the show we were taken back stage and met the band.......One of the best times of my live!!!!!

Always brilliant. After John Curulewski left the band, Tommy Shaw was hired into it, partly because he could sing the high harmonies to this song. Hats off to John Panozzo for the rapid-fire drums. P.S. they’re just “Styx,” no “The” at the beginning.

Tommy Shaw Rocks!
If you saw the episode of Daryl's House with Tommy Shaw as the guest, Tommy is warming up and Daryl said something like "dude, you have the highest natural voice I've ever heard. I can get there, but it's falsetto". Tommy said "yeah, if I warm up, I can hit some s**t!".

This was Styx's first big hit, in 1973. You've sampled their 70s stuff as well as their more showy, operatic 80s stuff, but there are a few you haven't touched on yet. "Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man)" is a classic, as is "Lorelei", "Don't Let It End", and "Show Me the Way". If you want to hear some of the group's solo stuff, you can do "Desert Moon" by Dennis DeYoung, or "Girls With Guns" by Tommy Shaw.
agree, "Fooling Yourself" goes hard and is hugely underrated IMO. an uplifting motivational song.

“Lorelei” is another great Styx song in a similar style to lady
Jay's face when they kicked into gear was priceless, probably the same reaction I had when I first heard it. This was their first big hit, such a total banger classic. I had the pleasure of seeing them live. They rocked so hard, the consummate arena band. So many great songs for you to check out, Blue Collar Man, Renegade, The Grand Illusion, Suite Madame Blue, Too Much Time On My Hands, the list goes on. Keep on the Styx train, you won't regret it!
About the same time, 3 different songs titled “Lady” came out…Styx’s version, Lionel Ritchie/Kenny Rogers version, and Little Rivers Band’s. All different, yet all awesome :)

'Return to Pooh Corner' by Kenny Loggins would be a great song for the girls. It reached #25 on the Adult Contemporary charts and came from his first children's album of the same name.
Styx ROCKS Guys. They’re like the American version of Queen. I’ve seen them live tons of times. Amazing live band.
Dennis DeYoung wrote this song in 1972, but Styx' record company rejected it for their first album, which was released that year. It was included on their second album, Styx II, in 1973 and released as a single, but it went nowhere. According to DeYoung, radio stations didn't know how to classify it, since it started slow and then picked up.
It was only through the efforts of a very persistent DJ on WLS in Chicago (the band's hometown) that the song got its due. Determined to make it a hit, he played the song every night at 8 p.m., until it caught on. It did, and other stations added it to their playlists (when DeYoung first heard it on the radio, he choked on his dinner he was so excited).
It wasn't until March 1975 that the song reached its chart peak of #6, giving them their breakout hit.
This was the first song Dennis DeYoung wrote and sang on his own that made it onto a record. The first Styx album had just two songs written by band members; from that point forward they wrote their own original songs, with DeYoung a primary songwriter.
Styx was signed to a small record label called Wooden Nickel when they first released this song in 1973. Styx later signed a major-label deal with A&M records, but the master of "Lady" was never released to A&M by Wooden Nickel. Styx had to re-record it in 1995 to get it on their Greatest Hits CD.

This song builds with each verse. From keyboard and finger cymbals, add light rhythm guitar and lyrical bass. Then drums, strong bass and guitar. Then the snare drum drives, the added distorted rhythm guitar and finally the lead guitar. Similar to "Bolero". Styx was great in concert. ☮💛🎶
Dennis de Young is a criminally under-rated vocalist, one of the greats of rock IMHO, thanks for the reaction
Lady was Styx's first hit. Most people were introduced to the band by this song.
Originally performed on an electric piano, Dennis found an acoustic piano at the recording studio. After a try, he switched to the acoustic for the recording. The rest is history. Remained at Number 2 for 2 weeks. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
Still my favorite Styx song after all these years.
This was a massive AM radio Top 40 hit spring of 1975. I was in 8th grade. End of school year vibe. Everywhere you went, this tune was playing on someone's car radio or transitor radio at the beach. First released in '73 to a smaller regional market, but then re-released in '75 nation wide. That's when it became a hit.
"Yellow Submarine" by the Beatles was actually originally written with kids in mind. Paul's always loved kids and now of course he has grandkids he dotes on. "Octopus' Garden" by the Beatles is a Ringo song that would be fine for kids as well. Paul's band Wings did a version of "Mary Had a Little Lamb" that's really fun. His first born, Mary, liked hearing her name in a song. If you are looking for straight up kids' songs there is a classic by The Irish Rovers called "The Unicorn" which I bet your daughters would enjoy. I loved it myself as a kid and really still do.
Ahhhh "The Unicorn" ... written by Shel Silverstein, in his book Where the Sidewalk Ends... and can't forget the version that Agnes did on "Mrs. Brown's Boys".... a show which is definitely NOT kid friendly... but funny!!!!!!!!!!

Most of these threads end up talking about groups and songs not the main topic of the reaction. If you take the time to notice, there are several comments answering the kid friendly song question, rather than talking about Styx.
I was seventeen when I was a backup band for Styx in 1977/1978 with a crowd of over 5,000
When they first released Lady in 1973 it wasn't a hit and didn't become one until a program director randomly picked it up and started playing it. It went to number 6 in 1975. Dennis DeYoung said he was close to going back to teaching. He said he knew how close they were to complete failure and it made a big impression. This song was one that many of us wanted the guy we were dating to play for us. You asked for songs that women would love. You had a number of people ask for you to respond to Adam Lambert singing Believe to Cher at The Kennedy Center Honors. His version literally blows Cher's out of the water and you can see Cher wiping away tears during the performance. For me I really enjoy his song On the Moon performed from his home with just a guitar player accompanying him. I didn't really know much about him until I ran across the Believe video on UA-cam last year and was so amazed and yes teary. I looked up more songs from him and found not only did he have 4 albums but he also is the front man for Queen and has been for 11 years and they're talking about touring the US in 2023. My favorite all-time band!!! He also has been a judge for singing contests in Australia and the UK. The guy has one of the best voices I have ever heard. I saw him live this past October and everyone around was saying Wow! His voice vibrates through you and the notes he hits! I met women that flew in to Vegas from Australia, Belgium, Japan and the UK and many other countries and from all over the US to just see his mini Ghost Hunt tour and attend all 3 shows. It was incredible and I plan on going next year and attending more than one of his shows...he was that good!

If you grew up in Chicago in 1973, this song received massive airplay by their hometown boys. Always think of that last note ".... Ladayyyyy" followed by "... Super CFL".

Guys…this is the song that brought Styx national radio exposure and began their rise to stardom.

"Suite Madame Blue" is a great one as well.
This was their first song on the radio. This is where the ball started rolling.
Two giant hits you haven't hit from them yet are "Fooling Yourself" and "Blue Collar Man". "Boat on the River" is good too if you want to hear them go acoustic. And "Show Me The Way" has a nice spiritual vibe.
I was a teenager when this came out and it was on the radio constantly for a long time before it became a regular staple for KSHE-95 in St Louis. I've seen Styx probably more than a half dozen times since the mid 70's. They've always been a big Midwest touring band. This was their first radio hit from their 2nd album. Cant believe it's been over 50 years and people are still listening and digging it! Music is life!

I saw this band in concert in 1981. It was an incredible show. My fondest memory is of the entire audience singing along with this song. So special.

This is the song that would propell Styx to stardom. When it first came out in '73, it got Tones of attention and deservedly so. Still one of their best songs ever.

This was the first song Dennis ever wrote for his wife, Suzanne Feusi. They will celebrate their 53rd Anniversary in January.
(Who gets married in January? In CHICAGO?? Must be true love…)
It's also the song that made their career. Styx (not "The Styx", Amber) had released four albums on Wooden Nickel records, a small Chicago record label that wasn't exactly lying about how worthless they were. Then one night, Jim Smith, a DJ for WLS-AM in Chicago, heard the song on the jukebox in a pizza place, and decided to play it on his radio show, which was heard in most of the country (since Chicago is centrally located and WLS had a powerful transmitter). Next thing Dennis and the group knew, this song from three albums previous was a hit (eventually reaching #6 on the charts) and they had a new record deal with A&M Records, which was a LOT bigger than Wooden Nickel.
Since you've covered this and "Babe", your next Dennis love song should be "Lorelai". You'll love that, too.

Another song from relatively early on that features that sort of piano work is "Prelude #12/Suite Madame Blue", the song Dennis wrote for the Bicentennial. And a family-friendly affirmative song of his would be "I'm Okay".
(This is not to diminish the contributions of Tommy Shaw and James Young as songwriters and vocalists, but as I've noticed before, Tommy mostly writes about bad times [in a hard-rocking way] and James has an acerbic take on life, so that's not quite what you're requesting.
That said, you've done exactly ZERO of James Young's songs, so anytime you want to tackle "Miss America", "Midnight Ride", or "The Great White Hope", please do so. And, as always, the live versions of "Half-Penny, Two-Penny/A.D. 1958" (a James song that transitions into a Dennis song) are fantastic)

Great reaction guys! STYX still tours and sounds amazing! And unlike most bands of that era the original DNA is still intact. Dennis is no longer there but Lawrence sounds fantastic and is incredibly talented and entertaining, John Panozzo passed away but Todd Sucherman is playing drums and he might be the best drummer in the business. Vocally they still harmonize beautifully and Tommy Shaw hasn't lost a thing....still sings like he did in the day. If you get the chance....go see them... you will have a great rockin' night!!!
YES! I have seen them with and without Dennis. I just saw them this past summer and it's a fact that Tommy Shaw hasn't lost a thing! 😉 Crystal Ball is a must.
So far the best Styx show I saw after Dennis left was one of his solo shows.

Styx was the first band I saw in concert for the "Grand Illusion" tour. It was great and I saw them a few more times. They have a ton of good songs you guys would love.

LOVE all of your STYX reactions! Styx has something for everybody...hard rock, ballads, prog, pop, folk, international and don't be surprised if they give you multiple styles within one song! That is part of their trademark. Great vocals, soaring guitars, great instrumentation, catchy melodies, epic harmonies and a great message that inspires. If you want to get more girls on the channel, since you've already reacted to "Babe" and "Best of Times", I'd recommend "Crystal Ball", "Paradise", "First Time", "Don't Let It End", and "Love At First Sight".

@@123lenny135 Yup, seen it. Perhaps their best track, just not one of their "romantic" tracks which is what I was referring to.
Alway felt that Tommy Shaw was the true star of this band. He wrote some of their biggest hits, had an exceptional singing voice and could more than hold his own on the guitar. I saw them once after Dennis left the band and they didn't miss a beat.
Of course, this was before Tommy joined the group.

Tommy is a virtuoso guitarist but you've also not listened to Dennis play piano just as good just different instrument
Dennis DeYoung made the band successful. Six of their Top 10 hits were sung by Dennis. Babe was their only #1 hit on the Billboard Top 100. Even Mr. Roboto hit #3.
DeYoung founded the band They were all responsible for making the original band a success. Tommy was a phenom guitarist that saved a tour when the original lead player quit on tour. He actually saved the band. You might wanna look that up before you show total ignorance

Styx was my first concert with Grand Illusion tour and also went to their Paradise Theatre tour 😎🇨🇦
First time I saw them live they started with this song. The power on stage went out but not the theaters PA. The band left but Dennis stayed on and asked if he should keep singing. We all yelled yes and he sang the first verse acapella. Then the power came back, the rest of the guys came on, they joined him where he was and finished the song. It was great.
This song is often credited as the first power ballad. I can't say for sure if that is true but it is certainly among the first
I think The Carpenters song Goodbye to Love may have actually been the first power ballad.

I was one of many Chicagoland high schoolers that heard Styx in concert at school either for free or a couple of bucks. I heard Lady back in 1972/73 and Then and 2 years later I saw them Play at my College when it was their first big hit. I love this song, and them.

I love this song. It's one of my favorites from Styx. A few more suggestions that you both haven't heard yet would be: "Blue Collar Man", "Lorelei" and "The Grand Illusion". For some suggestions for your daughters to hear, I'd definitely go with Journey, Chicago, Toto, Bryan Adams, Phil Collins, The Moody Blues. Bring a little Country to it as well with Dolly Parton, Reba McEntire, Shania Twain, Josh Turner. Since they're girls you can bring them in for Female Friday with some Heart, Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Linda Ronstadt, Bette Midler. 😎👍
Styx was relatively unknown when I was a freshman in college. They had to rerelease the first album with Lady on it. Fortunately, the second time around it became a smash hit.
I worked at a small town radio station then, we got the promo 45 on the Wodden Nickle label. We played it for a few months then WLS in Chicago played it and said it was brand new...well all of at the radio station had a good laugh because we knew we had beat them at playing it.

Styx has always been one of my favorite bands and they were the first I saw in concert. Their sound and lyrics were quite unique for their time.
John Panozzo was one of my favorite drummers. Sadly he's been gone almost 30 years. But dude was great. As a drummer, I learned a lot by listening to him play.

Oh and I thought I would add another remark about Lady.
The triumphant ending to that song is what's known as a " Bolero " build up. Jeff Beck used that on his own personal " Becks Bolero " from his first solo album " Truth. " You guys should hear that. It's an absolute
instrumental beauty.
"Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man)" is a great song, but my favorite Styx song is "Show Me the Way" - it's a brand new side of them: a heartfelt plea for guidance in a fallen world. It's truly a beautiful song!

Dennis DeYoung is vocalist/keyboards. Band started in 1972 - another great band from Chicago. He wrote this song in 1972, but was included on their 2nd album in 1973 and released as a single. A beautiful and strong love ballad. He also wrote the song "Babe" in 1979 as a birthday present for his wife. Hope that you listen/react to that song too. Quite a few good songs from this group.

Oh wow, I haven't listened to Styx in years. Used to love them in the 70s and 80s. I'm 55 now. Wow, this really brings back some memories.
Styx is in the Prog relm with Rush, Yes, Boston, Kansas, Pink Floyd and Queen. It was a great time to listen to the radio in your car going to wherever . . .
Styx was my first concert. I had just turned 13. Lady was their lone hit at the time. It was a great show in a small auditorium. Probably seen over 100 concerts since but that one holds a special place.

I grew up in the 70's about 2 hours from Chicago(Where STYX is from). Back then, there was no cable, internet, or vcrs, so very limited. What me and my friends would do is listen to WLS-AM on my short wave Panasonic. . They would play all of the current stuff and kept us up to speed. Anyway, one day, I heard this song,"Lady" come on and we were like,"Who is that?". After they played the song, told us they were Styx, a local Chicago band with Wooden Nickel records. At the time, no one knew who they were, but WLS ended up playing the heck out of the song because of listener requests.

The term that Amber is looking for about music going from quiet to loud, is "dynamic range". Many progressive rock bands, which early Styx started out as, have/use tons of dynamic range. I love bands who can play really quietly and either build up to, or just transition smoothly between loud and quiet moments like Styx does here... and on Come Sail Away.

This song, Styx in general, was everywhere in the 70s!!! I remember every boy in middle school had a Styx Jersey!
