Growing up in the eighties, I had no idea at the time how fortunate I was hearing this type of music all the time on a daily basis. Times have surely changed.
Add the decade of the 70s and you have a music soulmate
Absolutely.
You are so right!
As a South African i gotta point that this is our unofficial anthem. They play this at almost every event. Never gets old.
For sure! And you take us out of Africa and this will get us up dancing and singing at the top of our voices and missing home ❤
Wow 😊👍
And it never will get old. A timeless classic that has only gotten better with age.
Fellow saffa agrees wholeheartedly. There is no place like Africa....
This is some misleading
"Rosanna" and "Hold the Line" are two MUST DO Toto songs.
along with stop loving you.
Author nailed it... definitely the next two to do.
Hold the Line is such an underrated BANGER!! 🔥
Hold The Line. Absolutely have to knock that one out next.
I second that motion
That wasn’t a female voice, it was the lead singer on the Chorus. Great vocalist. Need to go down this rabbit hole with Toto, just fantastic musicians and band! And phenomenal huge songs!
ExactlY! It’s him alright!
I know, right? I was like "what female voice"? 😆
Yesss!!!
Yes, Bobby Kimball
Bobby Kimball, a Louisiana boy - like me.
Just love when youngins finally hear our music 🎶 😅
When this song was out, my youngest son was about 4 or 5 and I caught him walking around the house singing "I left my brains down in Africa". I laughed and under my breath I said "Apparently".
Now that is funny!!
@@mrsberdan 🤣
That’s hilarious 😂
Ha ha ha, most kids are morons, it's okay to laugh at them. It's only sad if they grow up to be morons. Then you know you failed them along the way.
@@LiberalsArePoop The good news is that he is now grown and a Physical therapist. He must have found his brains again.
Toto is a band of studio musicians who played on many of their contemporary's records and albums and this song is probably one of the most analyzed. There are many theories but in the end it is just good. The complexities are just the result of talented studio musicians playing together and having fun.
Toto was the studio band for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” album!
A few of them were in the backing band on the Grease soundtrack.
@@ZacCostilla Yea, Toto 4 (with Africa on it) won Album of the Year at the Grammys, they then delayed their tour to work on Thriller, which won the same award a year later. They even wrote Human Nature (one of the tracks on Thriller).
Wow I never knew that
@@ZacCostilla they were also the backing band for Boz Skags
Fun fact: Toto is the band playing the music for Michael Jackson on most of his early solo career recordings.
This is true
I didn’t know that, cool!
Same did not know that! Thanks for the info 👍 😀
Yes, news to me! And I'm 50 and a lifelong fan!😄
Not all Toto. But all these guys were big time session players that were highly daughter-in-law after especially when someone needed someone to come in to studio and lay down a guitar lick and solo. He would reach out to a few of these guys.
I love the line "I seek to cure what's deep inside, frightened of this thing that I've become". Deep.
Yeah, love it. The song is so beautiful!
I’m from New Zealand and worked in a Holiday Inn hotel in China in 1996 as the F&B Manager and I hired a Filipino band to play in the lounge bar who asked me to figure out the lyrics for this song so they could play it. It took me over an hour on my tape deck constantly replaying it to get the right lyrics. They knew I played guitar as a hobby so a few months later they asked me to and I played the last set with the band with my guitar for the first time ever in public nervous as hell. I also played and sang this song with them and the lead singer of that band is now my wife and we have four daughters who also all sing. I have it all on tape and it still freaks me out to watch lol
That is an amazing story.
Is this before or after the nba career?
💖👍
Lol! That’s so funny. Thank God for the lyrics option on this app. I’ve been singing the wrong lyrics since I was little! I always thought it was ‘I’d miss the rains down in Africa’ but apparently it’s ‘bless the rains’. I like miss better.
The high vocals at the end are not female. It's the lead vocalist Bobby Kimball. The dude with the stasche and the percussion instrument. Check out Hold The Line, Rosanna, Stop Loving you, Pamela
Exactly what's missing from all the covers!! Bobby's incredible voice!
Almost fell out of my chair laughing when they both mentioned the "female vocals" lmao.
That was Bobby all right! I scrolled down to see if anyone would clarify that. Hahaha!!
Yes. Those last 4 vids are a must to check out. They have several more. I have their best of on vhs.
@@zimjun7 as did I.
Everyone: Is it even possible to fit "Kilimanjaro", "Olympus", and "Serengeti" into one line of a song?
Toto: Sure, no problem!
I always thought that line was, “Kilimanjaro rising like Mt Everest over the Serengeti” LOL
It's a great line too
Ironically. Kilimanjaro is no where NEAR the Serengeti..lol
@@cmoeller3 yep i was under that wrong impression for a long time too, its actually Tsavo national park but Serengeti is like 200miles away so i give them a pass ;p
Its torture but I love them for it
Jeff Porcaro is their drummer, and he is on everyone’s “best ever” list.
Listen to “Rosanna” and pay particular attention to the drums. The beat was actually dubbed “the Rosanna shuffle” and there is a UA-cam video where Porcaro describes how he composed it. It’s pretty famous and there are darn few drummers who can pull it off.
Sadly, Porcaro has expired and thrown off this mortal coil. RIP.
RIP Geoff
Not trying to be combative but I have only seen him on a few beat ever list.
This is a Perfect example of the 80’s, not my “sound’ but can’t deny the talent and composition. Still played in public spaces and that is the mark of a great artist.
Also the song Rosanna is about the lead singer's at the time girlfriend actress Rosanna Arquette. You might know her better as the brother of actor David Arquette from the Scream movies and he was married to actress Courtney Cox.
If you decide to react to it I would suggest the live version. Post Porcaro, but the new drummer nails it.
A little long, but it will definitely quench your piano Jones.
ua-cam.com/video/S-CXfoveDFw/v-deo.html
Jeff Porcaro died in a bizarre gardening incident too, a common risk facing drummers.
he's in a library. One of the most beautiful songs ever, period. But also a high point in the history of music videos, IMHO.
One of the most underrated bands in the history of contemporary music--this song and "Hold the Line" prove it beyond a doubt. Some of the best vocal work in any song. Period.
There's a reason Eddie Van Halen described them as top-to-bottom the greatest band in history, insofar as professionalism and quality of musicianship.
The “piano” is a synthesizer. The song is about his love of the continent.
I hate this video. It’s so distracting. Love the song.
@@sarahzentexas OK, noober.
@@sarahzentexas it's a reaction video. just listen to the song if you don't want to hear people talking
@@eleven-hopper I think he was taling about the music video itself.
Ok I wanted to say synthesizer but I wasn't 100% sure so I guessed Electric Organ.
If you want more piano you need to react to Bruce Hornsby and the range "the way it is". 95% chance you will recognize the basic piano part because a rapper sampled it. It may be the best piano riff of all time.
Totally concur. I've been waiting for them to get to that song.
I love Bruce Hornsby & The Range. So many awesome songs…
Yassss!!! How do you love piano and not reacted to Bruce Hornsby?! Valley Road or That’s Just the Way it Is.
Yes, it's a beautiful song. And after you do "That's Just the Way It Is" please do "Mandolin Rain".
I agree! Bruce Hornsby is at the top of brilliantly talented pianist list with Billy Joel and Elton John!
These guys played on nearly everything that was recorded in L.A., from the late 70s, and into the 90s. A little album called Thriller, for example. But they've had a huge career as a band of their own as well.
Silk Degrees, too!
Steve Lukather is an almost unknown guitar god. His credits are unreal.
These were the guys everyone and I mean everyone, wanted to play on their albums.
Wrote and performed the soundtrack for the movie “Dune” in 1984
I see “Africa,” I click. I feel like it’s just one of the quintessential songs from my childhood that nearly everyone from my generation likes. I think I have it on almost every road trip playlist I make 😅
Hold the line was just as big , And way more rocky released in 1978
This song is a love song with a little bit of a stalking feel LOL.
These guys are top session musicians (have played on many artist's songs) and this is a group they formed to do some of their own music. You'll note how incredibly tight their sound is and how impeccably produced it is. This is likely their best record. The drummer Jeff Porcaro passed at age 38 from a heart attack.
"According to popular myth, at the first recording sessions, in order to distinguish their own demo tapes from other bands' in the studio, Jeff Porcaro wrote the word "Toto" on them. In the early 1980s, band members told the press that the band was named after Toto the dog from The Wizard of Oz.
After the completion of the first album, the band and record were still unnamed. David Hungate, after viewing the name on the demo tapes, explained to the group that the Latin words "in toto" translated to "all-encompassing." Because the band members played on so many records and so many musical genres, they adopted the name "Toto" as their own."
So they became Toto, as in "We're not just playing for Kansas any more?" 😉
Wow cool guys…I never knew that 😊
David Hungate was originally a Jazz bassist. He was in the famous college jazz ensemble One O'Clock Lab Band (@ Univ of North Texas)
“Hold The Line” is another great song by Toto
And, wont hold you back now followed by Chicagos love me tomorrow you'll be on a cloud....
@@marieaug9322 Yes!!!
99 is a great one as well.
This song never gets old! 🙂🎶🎸💕
I wish I could say the same about myself. I was 11 when this song came out. :)
There are also some really wonderful covers of this song. Choir,Choir,Choir and Perpetuum Jazzile, both on YT.
This song still gives me goosebumps after all these years. Good music never gets old 🎵🎶 🎸
Toto was a super group of session musicians, they were impeccable. The late great Jeff Pocoro is widely regarded as one of the best percussionists ever. Top 5 up there with Buddy Rich, Neil Peart and such. They were always amazing at vocal harmonies. You need to do Rosanna, and maybe Hold the Line by them. BTW, they use a synthesizer keyboard for all those cool 'piano' sounds. Love the vibe you two put to appreciating music.
Was that a glockenspiel used alongside the synth, or was everything synth?
The lyrics are mainly by David Paich - the keyboard player. He had two experiences which combined to become the inspiration for the song - as a child, he attended a Catholic school, where he met several missionaries to the continent: their descriptions of the preciousness of the rains became the chorus lyric "I bless the rains down in Africa." Paich later had watched a documentary on Africa, and seen photos and video of the suffering that a drought-stricken continent suffered - and this developed a heart for a place he had never been. The song describes this as a love - perhaps even a romance - of a man for a continent (the "she" referred to throughout the song.) Drummer Steve Porcaro says "A white boy is trying to write a song on Africa, but since he's never been there, he can only tell what he's seen on TV or remembers in the past."The band didn't really expect much from the song - it was a significant departure from their usual sound - but it made quite an impact on the listeners, hitting #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the video has over 694 million UA-cam views :-)
Thanks for this!
“ Rosanna” and “ Hold The Line” are a must. Once you discover TOTO it’s extremely easy to have their music ready on repeat. There is no better sound then real musicians playing real instruments. The talent and hard work required to reach this level of sound just can’t be underestimated.
Their greatest album hits is the best!!!
The singer with the higher voice singing the chorus, is Bobby Kimball. He sings lead on " Hold The Line " and mostly on
" Rosanna ". Bobby is from my hometown Vinton, Louisiana. and is a family friend.
The musicians played on Michael Jackson's " Thriller ".
Didn't know he was from Louisiana. I'm from alexandria Louisiana
@@seanvidrine5348 cool. He was born in Orange, Texas. We don't have a hospital in our small town of Vinton. Vinton is in Southwest Louisiana about 4 miles from Texas.

Like so many of the other songs here, It's hard to overstate what a MONSTER hit this was. It was ALL OVER top 40 radio. For years.
Have loved this band since their original was released , they have so many amazing songs , they are all brilliant musicians , totally brilliant
I’ve heard this song hundreds of times, and I still get goosebumps every time I hear the chorus. Those vocal harmonies are just WOW. The entire song is a masterpiece.
There are no females in Toto or backing Toto, that was the lead singer.
This song was very popular when I was in 6th grade. I loved it and still do. Toto is a GREAT group, their song "Rosanna" "Love Isn't Always on Time", "I'll Be Over You" and my favorite "I Won't Hold you Back"
"Rosanna" is about Rosanna Arquette ( her famous siblings are John and Patricia Arquette)
I also heard Eddie Money's song "Shakin" is about Rosanna Arquette, but that could be rumor. At any rate Rosanna left an impression. Lol
Also check out "Hold the Line" and "Georgy Porgy" from there Debut Album.
"Love Isn't Always on Time" is actually called "Hold the Line", but it's Toto's banging-est song.
@@Shrykespeare Ugh you are right, the title wouldn't come to me!
@@EricZ1982 Thanks for using the correct title, I didn't think it sounded but it wouldn't come to me!
Ah, you made me feel old saying you were in sixth grade. I saw them on tour when this came out. They were amazing!!!
These guys where were very sophisticated and talented at the time. Everything sounds like right on spot. Nice pick by you Rob SQ!
You just hit a goldmine. Toto is one of the best popular bands in music history. Super talented and creative people. I was your age when they hit and my musical horizons were expanding with the times. They are transcendent. You simply can't get enough Toto. They were made for the playlist. Really needed that song right now. Much love from California.
I'm having a hard time believing that there are any adults in America outside of the Amish community who have never heard this song.
LMFAO...
Lmao 😂
Yes 🙌 indeed
🤣🤣
agreed!
This song was just an all out smash in the 80's. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing it playing on radios, elevator music, grocery stores, everywhere.
I lived in Africa for over 35 years... and it's impact stays with you forever. My heart will never leave Africa. Great song choice, guys.
We have a saying in Africa…. Once your heart has beat to the drums of Africa, Africa’s drums will be forever in your heart.
@@brynngerson3524 Beautifully put, Brynn. That's exactly how I feel about Africa. Take care.
Same, nairobi Kenya.
I was fortunate enough to live for many years in The Gambia, West Africa. Like yourself my hearts still there.
Toto's guitarist, Steve Lukather, is also one of the most prolific session guitarists, having played on way over 1,000 albums for a wide range of notable artists including Michael Jackson, Chicago, Aretha Franklin, and Richard Marx. Jay needs to listen to his solo at the end of Lionel Ritchie's Running with the Night. Incomparable.
Also Jeff and Steve Porcaro worked with a lot of artists in session work.
Jeff worked with Steely Dan, Eric Clapton Boz Scaggs, Christopher Cross,Miles Davis, Pink Floyd,Paul Mcartney, Michael McDonald,Elton John , Diana Ross and may more
One of the last albums he worked on before his death was with Dire Straits and his drums feature heavy on the song "Calling Elvis"
ua-cam.com/video/BUavFsfbFv8/v-deo.html
Listen to Back On The Road from the album Faces from Earth,Wind and Fire
I watched an interview with Eddie Van Halen where he was asked what it felt like to be the world's greatest guitarist. Eddie laughed and said, "You would have to ask Steve Lukather that question".
Shoot, Steve's solo in Rosanna is a prime example of how to actually compose a guitar solo..
Steve did the Guitar riff's for Thriller, he even wanted to do the solo for Beat It. But when he heard Eddie Van Halen was going to do it, he fanboyed himself.
What you are hearing along with the piano is a "Kalimba" (sometimes called a finger organ) It is used in a lot of the early songs by Earth Wind & Fire (Murice White) Songs like Devotion, Reasons, Fantasy, Kalimba Story and others
A Yamaha GS 1 imitation of a kalimba
I'm 56 years old, so I've been listening to music for a while now. Honestly, I think that this is my favorite song of all time. I don't know why I love it so much. It just sounds so dang cool. The music along with the harmony of the voices gives me chills to this day, at a point in my life when I don't get near as many "chills" as I used to. Something about this song makes me feel adventurous and brave.
When I hear it in public unexpectedly I get very emotional.
I am one year older then you. It is because we were late teens when we first heard it. Very beautiful yet melancholy. There was NOTHING that sounded like it at the time. Incredible arrangement and vocals. Truly a masterpiece of the 80s and frankly one of the finest songs in decades.
Hi Keith, I just left a comment and request. Then I started to read other comments.
I’m 64 so I understand your comments all to well. I enjoy watching reactions because I know there isn’t much real music these day’s and we understand the power of the Radio. I just get a warm fuzzy watching youngster’s hearing what we heard on the radio on our way to the store. Thank goodness we have UA-cam that provides what you and I lived and heard every day. I also love this couples vibe. I believe they are genuine. I’d be willing to bet you and I get these same little fuzzies when we watch a reaction from these youngsters. My sister (two years older) and I had a really cool, young babysitter. Without our parents knowing, she bought three tickets to the Beatles concert in Detroit I believe it was their ’64 tour. Our baby sitter kind of conned our parents into going out that night and we were going to stay the night at her house. That was not uncommon so no red flags there. I was only six and kind of had some anxiety just because of fan rage. We (sister) and I would sit on our living room floor and listen to a transistor radio waiting for a BEATLES tune to come up. Our Mother took notice and bought us the “Meet the Beatles” album. We wore this album out.
It was a magical time and we got to live it. Don’t know about you but I feel blessed to have been brought up in this time. I would not change my age if it meant I wouldn’t be brought up at that same time frame. ✌️to you and yours.
Sincerely,
Charlie in AZ 🌵🌵
PS: don’t know if you’ve seen the video I requested RS to listen to.
ToTo tribute to George Harrison’s While My Guitar Gently Weeps, if not, you owe it to yourself. Let me know what you think. ✌️
Its a tough call but this is on the shortest of short lists of the single greatest songs of all time in my humble opinion.
The “female vocals” are the lead singer who isn’t singing the verses on this song. He’s not female 😃. Toto was like an all-star band of the greatest LA session musicians of the late 70s/early 80s. Masters of their craft, but lacking in the art department imo. I wouldn’t worry too much about the meaning of this one. This band is all over Michael Jackson’s Thriller album and the keyboard player wrote the song Human Nature. Check out Rosanna and Hold The Line for other Toto classics.
Yep. No female vocals.
Salute to Mr. Bobby Kimball... The main vocalist on this song is David Paich, who was also one of the band's keyboard players.
I was a little confused about them mentioning female vocals. Haha.
Totally agree! Here's Rosanna: ua-cam.com/video/qmOLtTGvsbM/v-deo.html
and Hold The Line: ua-cam.com/video/htgr3pvBr-I/v-deo.html
Oops, a fan of The Bee Gees and can’t recognize a falsetto? For this shame, for shame! 🤣🤣🤣
Dorothy: "I miss Kansas."
Toto: "I miss the rains down in Africa."
Kansas: Carry on my wayward child.
Good one 🤣
You know why there are no vampires in Africa? They bless the rains down there.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! Good one! (Dorothy and Toto joke)
Rosanna MUST be next - The drummer is one of the best EVER.
Jeff Pocaro! It was a sad that he died so young in 1992
Hold the line is much better.
When you create a half time shuffle and it's so famous it gets named after the song... Yeah. You've done okay.
Yes, please react to Rosanna by Toto.
Also, a totally epic song, Boston - Foreplay/Longtime.
“Rosanna” features the “Rosanna Shuffle” - a drum cadence that was written by Jeff Porcaro, their original drummer, one of the best in the business. Sadly he isn’t with us anymore.
I love this song. Beyond the lyrics, It really captures the exciting and mysterious elements of Africa and romances its unique beauty.
When Toto first formed, a good portion of the band was made up of 3 brothers - the Porcaro brothers! Jeff (Drummer), Steve (Keyboardist and Singer), and Mike Porcaro (Bassist). Jeff died early in life back in 1992, but not before laying down many good tracks with his drumming skills. Mike died from ALS in 2015. He had a long career as a Bassist - touring with Toto, Boz Scaggs, and Seals and Crofts. Steve Porcaro is the last surviving Porcaro brother. He wrote the song "Human Nature" for Michael Jackson. He was also a session musician for the band Yes, and Jefferson Airplane.
Nice rundown of the bros. life/careers. I was lucky enough to attend high school with them.
We all got pretty damn excited when Jeff got hired by Steely Dan in 1973, they were one of our favorite bands! Including Jeffs! Are you kidding me!
Got to watch Jeff play with SD and meet/hang with the band. My weekend with SD, a cherished memory. Today, 4/1 is Jeff's Birthday! 70!
Great reaction, guys! Btw, there's no female vocal - that was Bobby Kimball's amazing vocals. Other Toto songs: "Hold The Line"; "Georgy Porgy"; "Roseanna"; "Without Your Love." This band had three lead vocalists.
“Africa” is a legendary song. Another memorable song about Africa is Enya’s great “Storms in Africa.” Enya has many gorgeous songs, including Book of Days and Orinoco Flow. When you hear them, you will remember them forever.
Two more great Enya songs are 'Only Time' and 'Caribbean Blue.'
She’s a must for female Friday
Toto was a group of exceptional musicians. So many people wanted them to play in their songs. Here's a great Toto song for Amber: "I Won't Hold You Back." Amazing ballad!!! Jay will love it, too. The piano is absolutely beautiful!!!!!!!!!!
super group.
Yes, and I'll Be Over You is another great ballad of theirs too!
Be sure to check out "Can't Stop Loving You"
Agreed, I won't hold you back is one of my favorites
Literally never gets old. I've heard it thousands of times since the 80s and it's always a fresh song, every time. Will remain an absolute classic for all time.
When it came out, I thought and still think they are singing about the continent, Africa. I've heard from so many people that once you visit, it stays with you and makes you yearn to return. I watch another channel that you might enjoy, it's wild earth. They take you on an actual safari in several different African parks. It's absolutely wonderful! My favorite animals have changed from elephants to the hyenas of Djuma. Once you see the babies, they will become your favorite too. Oh, and it is family oriented. They encourage the younger viewers to ask questions and they answer them. :)
Man, you kids make me appreciate my old albums so much more. Y'all re-inspire my love for music. Thank y'all so much for bringing joy back to my life.
✌️🙂
This album won 7 GRAMMY awards. It is stellar.
It's weird because it was "Rosanna" that got all the accolades back in the day but "Africa" is far more remembered today.
Got to do "Roseanna" next, it has SO many different sounds it will blow you away!
Ahhhh a song about a prostitute and the singer's love for her.
Oh what a great song and it has horns.
Just checking we are taking about the one by the Police, and not the other one that's not the same in any way.
"I'll Be Over You"
I love this song. This is one of the most beautiful songs ever. Everything here are off the charts from the lyrics, vocal and harmony. Huge Toto fan here.
The songs you guys review, in their time, we're the absolute best that those times had to offer. "Africa?" Toto? " They were great, and then they put out " Africa. " It stopped people in their tracks. The drums, the chorus. Jesus! When I finally got to Africa I did what I promised myself, I stood in a street corner and yelled "I blessed the rains down in Africa."
Toto IV, a great album. Listen to “Roseanna” sometime, the other big hit from this album. This song is so well known and beloved, kind of like ELO’s Mr. Blue Sky.
Yes yes indeed! Roseanna has one of THE greatest guitar solos!
You might also like some late seventies/early eighties Genesis, songs like "Follow You, Follow Me" (1978), "Turn It On Again" (1980), and "Abacab" (1981), maybe also some Peter Gabriel from the same period ("Games Without Frontiers" and "I Don't Remember" from 1980), maybe too Tears for Fears' 1981 hit "Change." This 1982 Toto song brought to my mind all that because this song would have flowed right into or out of those ones on the radio at the time.
Steve Lukather is the guitarist, and he is criminally underrated, riffs and interesting lead/solo phrasing !
This was a massive hit worldwide. Just a great song, with a lovely chorus.
Subhanallah Indah nya era masa ini... 90's... Subhanallah...
More Toto songs: "Hold the Line"; "I'll Supply the Love"; "Rockmaker"'; "Manuela Run"; "Rosanna"; "Pamela"
You left out a couple of favourites of mine: 99 and Stranger in Town (a very underrated tune)
99 is a great song. Hold the line also and Rosanna.
I won't hold you back
Gypsy train and I will remember.
"I'll Supply The Love" and "Manuela Run" are two of my favorites!
This song brings back so many memories. Played keys in a band during my high school years in the 80's. Rosanna and Africa were two of the songs we covered. You should definitely check out some other Toto songs.
This is quintessential '80s synth-pop; the music that defined a generation.
Toto was a band that got their start as studio musicians who became a band on their own. Very gifted musicians. Toto IV was their best album, which included this song, Africa, Rosanna(apparently about Rosanna Arquett), I Won’t Hold You Back( my personal fav), Waiting for Your Love( also a fav), Good forYou, no bad song on that album. Great rabbit hole to dive down into
This is my favorite song of all time. I love rock, metal, hip hop, rap, every genre. But this. This is my favorite song in history. I love this song so much.
Great group, one of their iconic hits and one of the biggest hits in pop history. ." Hold the line" is my favourite. I think they played a lot of the music on the Michael Jackson. album "Thriller"..
This is one of the best pieces of music ever recorded. Incredible song, and the choice of instruments is phenomenal.
Try Christopher Cross Sailing for another piece of absolute amazing music.
I love Toto! "Africa" remains a classic after 40 years. I've played it hundreds of times in my life, and it still rocks. Other great Toto songs include "Hold the Line", "Rosanna", "Pamela", and "Animal".
The vocals at the end that you thought were female were actually the vocals of Bobby Kimball their lead vocalist with the bushy mustache. The song was about how the people would go out to pray that God would bless the rains for the crops that year.
One of those amazing with multiple members along the years and ever changing lead singers from one song to the next, incredibly talented.
Meaning of “Africa” by Toto. “Africa” is a song recorded by the rock band Toto. The lyrics of “Africa” capture the quandary of a guy who must choose between his two loves - the continent of Africa and girl he finds therein.
Well, according to David Paich, the song is inspired by when he was in Catholic school as a boy, they had brought in priests who had done missionary work in Africa. I think the conflict in the song is meant to be over the work they were sent to do over their love for the continent and what they'd found there. One fun fact is that the rest of the group didn't like the song, it almost got cut from the album.
🎵 “I bless the rains down in Africa…” 🎶 Love this song!
I always thought they sang "I missed the rains down in Africa"
@@diegosuarez1563 A lot of people thought that too. :)
"Georgy Porgy", "English Eyes", "99" and "Hold The Line" are all great songs by this band!
My absolute favorite song.
I saw Toto 3 years ago. this song was so big they would stop the music and the whole crowd would sing the chorus..It was so fun and they still sounded great!
We saw them a few weeks ago open for Journey. I loved the jam section they did at the end where Jospeh would have the crowd repeat after him
In 2015, David Paich explained that the song is about a man's love of a continent, Africa, rather than just a personal romance with the lyrics based on a late night documentary of african suffering.and plight. the sound WAS a keyboard a synthesizer a Yamaha CS-80, a polyphonic analog synthesizer, to be specific which was introduced to paich by . Steve Porcaro, the band's synth player, they basically wrote the song around the synth and created what became the songs iconic opening run
I still like the fan theory that it's about a guy who was turned into a werewolf and is searching for a cure in Africa.
@@aimeerisch4059 Me too thats one of my personal faves =^_^=
From what I’ve read and heard about this song (not any musical expert here) that Paich wrote this song after seeing a news story on TV about Africa. If I’m remembering correctly, the song is about a missionary in Africa and is torn between the love of his work and love for a woman. The first verse lets us know she’s flying there for him.
Toto's sound is so cool! You should listen to "Hold The Line", "I Won't Hold You Back", "Rosanna", "Georgy Porgy", "I'll Supply The Love" and "I'll Be Over You". Toto's musicianship is tops.
This song is still popular on the radio, 40 years after it hit No 1 in the US charts (and went 8x platinum)
I'm going to see Toto for the first time at the end of the month at the famous Hollywood Bowl and fully expect to be singing this one at the end of the concert at the top of my lungs with 20,000 of my close personal friendd 😊❤❤❤
You two, if you loved the harmonies and soaring vocals in this, and when you have listened to Journey, you really ought to try “Kyrie” by the band Mr. Mister. I just checked, very few have reacted to that song. Total 80s vibe. Fantastic vocals and harmonies. Bonus, when you find out what the lyrics for that song really mean, it is totally your scene! Do it! Mr. Mister, Kyrie!
Kyrie is my favorite song by Mr. Mister!
oooohhhh yessss
Thank you for the recommendation! I had never heard it and I LOVED it!
Fantastic song!! Would make a great reaction!
The piano was a synthesizer. A piano-type keyboard that controls electronic circuits. Very big beginning in the late 70s and now almost any song you hear in modern music has synths in it. They’re capable of a huge range of sounds, from mimicking other instruments to totally new sounds created from scratch.
Right on! Finally some Toto...”Hold The Line” and “Rosanna” next. It’s a synthesizer Amber.
Yesss, "Hold the Line" is soooo goood. 100% this should be the next Toto song
Yes, both of these! Especially, hold the line
Hell Yes Hold The Line is a straight banger!!!
One of my favorite songs ever! The song is really about wanting to visit Africa, a place he loves but has never visited. The instrument you're talking about is a synth (synthesizer), basically an off shoot of an electric keyboard. And actually, the female harmonies you mentioned are the lead singer in falsetto! Just a little bit of what makes this song incredible!
I've heard two stories of what the song is about. One: It's a novelty song about a guy who is a werewolf. "Frightened of this thing I've become ". Two: It's about cunnilingus. "Rains down in Africa " is a euphemism for wet p@$$y.
The plethora of songs you guys supposedly haven't heard before blows me away! Have you two been living a sheltered life under a rock all these years?! The amazing music you've missed throughout your life!!!
Toto... I won't Hold You Back. Has one of the most beautiful guitar solos of all time and is simply just a gorgeous song. ❤
I love love love the vocal harmonies in this song. And I never noticed that very cool bass lick at the end! I'm no Toto expert but I'm good with voices, and I'm pretty sure that was a guy - the lead singer - singing the high ad libs at the end.
Other great TOTO songs - "I Won't Hold You Back", "Rosanna" & "Hold The Line".
The instrumental solo was done with a computerized keyboard, aka "synthesizer." They can be programmed to sound like many different instruments. (Even a standard piano!)
Yup!
yep it's a synthesizer
80s staple for most groups
The 80s was the age of the synthesizer.
One of my favorite songs of all time! I'm 47 years old now. This brings me back to a time when I realized in my little "9 year old life" that there was so much more to life and music.. I can't explain it really.. My cousin Kathy, who was a teenager, would play this and I'd melt. I was a pop fan and Toto expanded my universe. So deeply! 💕🕊
Heard in a documentary that 'Africa' is the world's most mathematically perfect song. True or not, it's a beautiful song, vocally and musically.
Underrated band…a group of studio musicians who became a real winner. They had plenty of hits you would like….
Underrated? This song won seven grammies!
An amazing band , and a dreamy escaping song to the mysterious African continent. Just amazing.
Great orchestration, with a lot African folk vibes combined with western sound. Love from Greece guys.
They named their band after Dorothy's dog. It had nothing to do with some translation between languages.
@@keithbrown7685 Oh, is that so? That's an info . Thanks.
Toto is singing about discovering the truth about and falling in love with the Continent of Africa.
it was fun watching you guys review this old tune. thanks a bunch. big, big hugs from all of us to you! hope you can feel it.
Toto has made so many great songs over the years.
After You´ve Gone, All The Tears, Bottom Of Your Soul, Don´t Chain My Heart, I Will Remember, Kingdom Of Desire, Mysterious Ways, Spanish Steps Of Rome, The Little Things, The Road Goes On, just to name a few.
Midnight Oil’s song….. “Beds Are Burning”
An Australian group from 1987 who’s music found its way to us .
A band who thought that equality should be of utmost importance….
Loved this song back in 1987..and still do….
Toto were a brilliant band who wrote several classics. Great musicians
You've made me so very happy. Blood, Sweat and Tears. Do that one!
David Clayton Thomas. You’ll love his voice.
This is one of my favorite songs in the late 70s i was stationed in Germany 1976-1979 always played it over there wild bill
Don't see how that's possible since it didn't come out til 82.
Worked in 6 countries in Africa a while back... best time I ever had and the best people i ever met.... there's a piece of my heart will always belong there 💙
