this song proves that no person is 100% passive you can push someone so far but when you cross that line its on and thats usually a dangerous person at that point
Tommy did NOT realize he had to fight sometimes to be a man. Tommy knows he must fight this time because he IS a man. The distinction is subtle, but important.
I love that this song shows that the two ideas of "you don't have to fight TO BE a man" and "sometimes you have to fight when you ARE a man" are not mutually exclusive. I think the best response to this I ever heard was "he always turned the other cheek until it wasn't his cheek to turn"
I love it when everyone agrees with the father's advice until the end. In country music, there is always a twist in every story telling song. Loved it.
His father's advice was "Walk away from trouble if you can" just so happens this was one you don't walk away from. You don't have to fight to be a man but some times you got to fight when you're a man. There are no contradictions.
@@gk5891 Right the lesson from the dad was right. Tommy just took the lesson from the dad farther than his dad said. Do not walk away all times but most of the time. Sometimes you have to fight. That corresponds to what his dad said.

@GrannyBoots the still brings me to tears also. This song came out when I was dealing with a lot of things in my life. I'm a HUGE Kenny Rogers fan ever since he came into the music scene. I TRULY do love the message of this song. Sad to say, it was still a lot of stigma in our society when it comes to rape and sexual assault. Another thing that I learned later on that people don't realize about this subject is why it happens. There less of a part to it that has to do with sex. Rape and sexual assault ISN'T REALLY about sex for the most part. IT IS however~about imposing your will upon somebody else AND controlling them. The statistics are now that one person will get assaulted in every 6 seconds. People have the perception that if you have a lot of skills that YOU SHOULD HAVE BEEN ABLE TO fight somebody off. THAT'S not always the truth~IF they get the jump on you. I AM someone who used to box and the underground circuit on Long Island & NYC when I was much younger AND I did Krav Maga. The first 3 seconds of any encounter will make OR break it. In a lot of cases I have learned that this decides whether you survive OR NOT. People really don't realize or maybe they don't want to understand it? But depending on the situation~even people who ARE normally tough fighters CAN get taken down by others. #RapeSurvivor

There's a fine balance between giving too much information and being honest about imperfection with your boys. Hopefully in the end we dads leave something positive for our boys to build on.

"PICK YOUR BATTLES." Not every circumstance requires a fight; better to walk away. When a major line is crossed and no other option left but to fight, then fine.
Thank you 💋🔥Coward of the County made my fav list when it came out. But The Gambler was my intro to Kenny Rogers as a pre-teen Northerner🤣😁I just love music🎶
I grew up on this song. Our neighbour was a DJ and every Sunday morning he would play Kenny Rogers, Jim Reeves, Loretta Lynn etc. I loved that time and miss it.
This song was really shocking when it first came out. I think no one is ever expecting it to take the turn it does. Kenny Rogers is such a story teller, have you ever done his song: "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town" wow, is that a powerful one and so unique, I have never heard another song tell a story like that one. I think you would like it a lot. Have a great day guys!
The thing so interesting about the Bee Gees was that in their heyday people either really liked them or really didn't. As the time has gone by they have not only maintained that loyal fan base but watched it grow on its own account with the nostalgia factor; more people are listening now in an attempt to regain and re-live those days way back when. While it is sad and terrible that two of the brothers have passed away, their contribution to the great music lives on, and we'll it should. Too Much Heaven? I think not.
They made a TV movie based on this song. When I was a kid, I didn't understand the "taking turns at Becky" part. I thought they just came over & slapped/beat her up. It wasn't until years later when I hear it again as an older teen that it clicked in my brain what really happened. Wait... WHAT?!?! OH HELL NO! I wanted to go kick some Gatlin boys' asses myself! OK, now you have to check out "Lucille" by Kenny Rogers... Another great story put to music. Kenny himself said it's a "great beer drinkin' sing-a-long song that everyone can join in". It's true, I first heard it as a kid & didn't really pay attention to the lyrics, but me & my friends would belt out the main chorus every time it played on the radio "You picked a fine time to..." That's all I'll say for now, so as not to give "spoilers" on what the song is about. Please check it out soon - you wont regret it, I promise.
My momma, my wife, and my little girl are 100% off limits to everyone! I'm a simple, peaceful, person except where my family is concerned. Any man worth his salt is going to be that way. My family is my life and I will sacrifice mine for them.
Its funny coz everyone who reacts on this song, they comment after the 1st chorus and then got shocked and changed their thought after that last last chorus last line 😅
this song proves that no person is 100% passive you can push someone so far but when you cross that line its on and thats usually a dangerous person at that point

Been watching you for a minute, but wow, what a reaction! Sorry you lost your father at such an early age. You two are such a breath of fresh air! You, should try his very first hit, Ruby! Peace from Northern Michigan.
Thank you for watching Gary
"PICK YOUR BATTLES." Not every circumstance requires a fight; better to walk away. When a major line is crossed and no other option left but to fight, then fine.
This song was made into a movie starring Kenny Rogers
This song is a road trip favorite! My mom and I know every word!!By the end you know who the real man is!!😊
Beautiful voice, beautiful human, thought-provoking song! 😊
1. Do : Ruben James and 2. Ruby don’t take your love to town 3. Love will turn you around by Kenny Rogers. Love me some Kenny Rogers.🩵🩵🩵
Shawn and Mel in 1981 Kenny Rodgers stared in the TV movie based on this song, And as always a great reaction 👊🏾👊🏾
Thank you Victor, we’ll check the movie out
This song was really shocking when it first came out.
I love how you both really listen to the lyrics!
Yes. This is a wonderful song. My favourite Kenny Rogers song is Desperado, originally by The Eagles.
Excellent song and story. Nobody delivers like Kenny. I had a feeling you were from B'more; you got that fam look.
