The first time it was sung, it just let you know that people didn't think he would stand up for himself, and that he wouldn't fight back. The second time it was sung, it let you know that nobody thought that way about Tommy anymore, that they now knew that Tommy could be pushed to the point of violence, but that it took serious provocation. What the Gatlin boys did to Becky, they did in private, where nobody could see, but when Tommy confronted them, he confronted all of them at once in a public place, and at least once, said why he was confronting them. Tommy was ready to have his defeat seen, so long as he was seen getting justice for what had been done to Becky.
