You don't have to fight to be a man, but sometimes you do have to fight when you are a man. Pretty much explained healthy masculinity in a song. And you're right. You should fortify your mind and body to be there for those you love. This is the way, my man.
"But you could've heard a pin drop when Tommy stopped and locked the door." Probably heard this song a thousand times but this line still gets me. "The Gambler" is hands down my favorite Kenny Rogers song for painting a mood and state of mind and "Ruby" from his First Edition days for its gut wrenching poignancy.
One of my favorite pastimes is watching Men react to this song because when they get to the chorus they always pause and say it is so true you don't have to fight to be a man. Then they listen to the next chorus and I love watching the transformation. One of the beautiful thing about men is they have an inner cape. It's what I've always described it to my family... My husband and I have five sons. Men just have this line you don't cross and when you do they get fire their eyes and it almost always involves hurting women or children. I personally believe it is a gift of God and it's beautiful to behold
My husband started karate at 14 years old just to channel his energy. When I met him at 23 years old, he was a 3rd degree black belt instructor. He has also become proficient in Krav Maga. We grew up in the Southern USA and are both expert marksmen, but he still feels hand to hand combat is a necessary skill. With you having daughters, he would definitely approve. He took down a home invader when we lived in Miami with one kick.
This is a classic!!!!! I am 44 and have listened to this song for as long as I can remember 🙂 I love watching ya'll being willing to branch out to other genres!
Kenny has several great story songs like this. "The Gambler' & 'A fine time to leave me Lucille' are perfect examples. For a beautiful song, check out 'Lady' or 'Through the years'. He is also a GOAT of country. One of my earliest encounters with country. He actually used to be in a pop group in the 60's called 'The first edition'. He has some great duets with Dolly Parton too.
You are just a good human - good father- good husband ❤ I so enjoy watching you. Thank you. Kenny Rogers is amazing! He is my childhood! Riding in the backseat of my dad’s car. Listening to Kenny Rogers. Great memories.
I love me some Kenny Rogers 😉 reminds me of the old days playing records with my DAD R.I.P. 🥺❤️🩹DAD & KENNY 🎶that’s why I always say music is life Because it holds power to connect to one’s soul & memories 🥹😂🤔 with lyrics & melodies country music is amazing !!! 🎶🎶🎶
Kenny Rogers recorded a Lionel Richie written song "Lady" that made Lionel Richie (All Night Long, Hello) question his sanity. He did two duets with our queen Dolly Parton (the single of the year "Islands in the Stream" and my favorite "Can't Make Old Friends"). He was the Gambler in song and film. He was Brewster in Six Pack, a film that featured his "Love Will Turn You Around" as its theme song. Later in his career, he camem out with "The Greatest", which brings emotion to anyone who has had a young child and "Buy me a Rose", which makes every woman want their husband to HEAR the lyrics!
My dad always told me don’t come home all battered from a fight and let me find out you started it. If someone starts a fight and they show you that they’re not gonna let you walk away if you have a chance, put them down and keep them down But always try to walk away because it doesn’t mean you’re man because you had a fight.
This is a great song!!!! One of his later songs that is an INCREDIBLE story telling, is called "The Greatest". Its about a little boy playing baseball...... you will LOVE it!!
Great Reaction Video...... This was also turned into a "Made for TV" movie in 1981, with Kenny playing the Uncle (same person singing the song)... The moral or take away from the story...... You can only be nice for so long, and everyone has to find their line/limit.......
Sebs, I'm the youngest of five siblings (they always save the best for last 😂). My first Kenny Rogers concert was ~1984. I picked a huge bouquet of yellow daffodils from the woods around our house and gave them to Kenny on stage. It was a GREAT night and the girls and I had a great time!
It's great that young people are being introduced to some of the greatest songs of my time. This song was popular when I was a teen. Great lesson. Great story. Great music. Brings back loads of memories 🥲
I grew up, just down the river of Detroit Michigan, so I listen to a little bit of everything. I got Motown, rock ‘n’ roll, funk, R&B & blues from my dad and country music from my mom. You need to check out Kenny Rogers on stage with Lionel Richie. They were best of friends and Lionell actually wrote some music for Kenny.
This is one of my FAVORITE songs. I'm a bigger guy, but always tried to avoid physical violence, because I didn't know how I'd react, whether I'd be able to hold back when enraged. Found out my Grandfather evidently nicknamed me correctly, by calling me his "Baby Polar Bear", when I was pushed beyond my limit.
For another good storytelling/life lesson song check out his song The Gambler. Then for something completely different check out his song with The New Edition called "Just Stopped in to See What Condition My Condition Is In" to hear some psychedelic rock Kenny Rogers.
You've commented on the storytelling - and for sure Kenny was a master artist. But he also had one of the smoothest soulful voices ever. He was an amazing performer, singer-songwriter, and good actor too. My mom was in love with kenny -my whole life I grew up with him. I've seen him live 3 times. And his music crossed over different genres - he's wasn't just country - he was top 40 and adult contemporary. Just a true artist beloved across generations and genres. Other songs by Kenny with a great story feel that you would love: The Greatest, Lucille, Ruby, The Last Ten Years, 20 Years Ago, and my personal favorite "Love Will Turn You Around".
Kenny Rogers was a true legend! This is my favorite song of his own besides Three Gambler. And "yellow" means coward, in case you didn't know since this is an old song about an older time! Also, you missed a small but important part of the second verse, before he went to see the Gatlin boys. So maybe go back and give it a listen again. It changes things a bit!
You’re reactions are so authentic…I was a metal head in high school, and my wife introduced me to country. They are the best story tellers. I’m glad you found them. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
You may be recalling Kenny Rogers from "Lady", written by his great friend Lionel Richie when Lionel was with the Commodores. There is a wonderful video of Kenny and Lionel singing the song together late in Kenny's life. BTW, have you reacted to any of the classic R&B, Funk, Soul, etc. (e.g. Commodores)? If not, there is an extraordinary world of music to explore there.
Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career. He was a great story teller in many of his songs like "Coward Of The County" & "The Gambler". He had so many hits "Lucille", "Lady", "Through the Years", "She Believes In Me" etc. He did a lot of duets such as with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer", with Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight" & with Dolly Parton "Islands In The Stream". He also did quite a few duets with Dottie West.
I grew up listening to all types of music but country has always been my favorite. Kenny Rogers is someone I have loved since I was young! So glad you got to check him out!!
I was always a backdown kinda guy until the right circumstance happened and I realized I had more power in my hands than I needed. Before I knew it I had to stop hitting a man bc of my consciousness coming back.
One of my favorites, for sure. And as a young kid, Islands in the Stream was my favorite song for a long time - even before I ever understood the lyrics.
Lionel Richie wrote a song called Lady for Kenny Rogers. They were together and Kenny kept trying to sing the song but he wasn't satisfied with how it sounded. Then Kenny's wife came in. He sang the song to her and it was perfect.
They made a TV movie based on this song. When I was a kid, I didn't understand the "taking turns at Becky" part. I thought they just came over & slapped/beat her up. It wasn't until years later when I hear it again as an older teen that it clicked in my brain what really happened. Wait... WHAT?!?! OH HELL NO! I wanted to go kick some Gatlin boys' asses myself! OK, now you have to check out "Lucille" by Kenny Rogers... Another great story put to music. Kenny himself said it's a "great beer drinkin' sing-a-long song that everyone can join in". It's true, I first heard it as a kid & didn't really pay attention to the lyrics, but me & my friends would belt out the main chorus every time it played on the radio "You picked a fine time to..." That's all I'll say for now, so as not to give "spoilers" on what the song is about. Please check it out soon - you wont regret it, I promise.
Yes, Becky was assaulted. No, no LEOs were called to deal with it. Tommy followed his Daddy's words even in this situation! You don't *have* to fight, but there are times when it's necessary anyway. Kenny's got a huge number of story songs to choose from! "The Gambler" is probably the best known, but "You Decorated My Life" and "Lucille" come close. Take your pick! Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton did several duets that are must-hear! "Islands in the Stream" is my top pick for you - a great love story sung by two of country's most loved singers.
As a dad and husband, I’m 100% with you! Great catch with the key changes! Also love the “fricks”! Definitely reminding me of my time that I lived in Logan, UT in 2000 😆
Kenny was in a movie featuring this story and another one, the Gambler.. Kenny also did great duets. One of my favorites was with Lionel Richie singing Lady.
Found you tonight while watching election polls. Going on 6 hours. LOL. I have enjoyed your commentary. I commend you on becoming U S citizen. I am the mom of a Marine who came home with PRSD this has been on hard on all of us. I appreciate your respect for all our military hero’s. God bless your beautiful family.
Been Kenny fan for years and years and always sing along but not until now with you interpreting it in your way have I got into the story. Thank you. Love to you and family. Nana Karen. UK. x
I saw Kenny Rogers and the First Edition in 1973, two weeks after I graduated high school. (Yes, I’m old😂) I liked (and still do) rock from Beatles to AC/DC to Kiss to Metallica. Hated Country and Southern Rock but now I like it all. I particularly like to watch you discover Country. I heard you say on one of your videos that you probably didn’t like Country music because of peer pressure.I think that may have been the same for me. My favorite old Kenny Rogers songs were “Ruby, Don’t Take Your Love to Town,” “Lucille” and “Just Dropped In.” The last one reminds me of Cream or The Doors.
"The unforgivable sin is soft hitting. Hit not at all if it can be avoided, but never hit softly." Just a fun historical quote I like to observe, felt it fit here
This is actually my favorite Kenny Rogers song!! Very nice of some one like you to react to it considering how many times I've seen you react. You seem like a very good guy, and I hope that is always in your future
Kenny was an amazing person ,so talented. A voice that is unmistakable. You should see the movie by the same name. One of his last videos was with Home Free, Children Go Where I Send thee. Watch all the way to the end it is interesting what Kenny says.
Thank you so very much for this Seb's!!! I would ride in the car with my mom and dad when I was a kid and hear this song, didn't really know what it meant then. Not till a couple months ago, really, I was there a country mood and got the real meaning. I Grew up on country, and I could tell you every song from 1990 on back. However, I do not really get into the new country. I think they try to sell records by telling sad stories without the raw and real emotion. What I mean by that is, they are not really relating to their music. They are only telling a sad story, and that's OK. But like in the Jamie Johnson video, when you said, how can he possibly laugh at such a tragic situation. Well, it's because they lived it, and they had overcome all that tragedy. And they're singing about it. So that makes it really real. Personal and raw, like life!!!!! Much love to you all!!!!!!! ♥ ♥
I agree! I love the old stuff. Haven’t kept up on the new stuff like I did as a teen, but found some good new artists who write like the Kenny and others did. Cody Johnson (several singles like Human) and Hunter Hayes (Blue Sky album as a recent one) come to mind first for those types. No problem either way but I really appreciate the old school storytelling aspect so glad you enjoy it too!
Kenny was awesome. His story telling is so good. My Mum used to play his songs in the car, I used to know all the words to this song, and many other Kenny songs and would sing along.
I grew up listening to Kenny. I stood in line for 6 hours waiting for tickets to go on sale for one his concerts back in the early 80’s just so my dad could go. My favorite Kenny Rogers song is with Dolly Pardon, “Islands in the Stream”, written by the greatest singer/songwriter groups of all times, “The Bee Gees”. I hope that sometime in your reactions, people lead you down The Bee Gees trail. They had decades and decades of hits for themselves and those they wrote for others. Love your reactions so much. ❤️
To protect the weak and the innocent is the right reason for a man to fight. We women appreciate you when you do!
Kingdom of Heaven, Director's Cut, love you, you're welcome, lol
There is a distinction between "you don't have to fight TO be a man" and "sometimes, you have to fight WHEN you're a man."
Learning that is what manhood is about
This song was so popular back in the day they made a TV movie about it!
You don't have to fight to be a man, but sometimes you do have to fight when you are a man. Pretty much explained healthy masculinity in a song. And you're right. You should fortify your mind and body to be there for those you love. This is the way, my man.
U r wene
That was the theme of "The Quiet Man." Really worth a view
You don't protect a woman because she is weak. You protect her because she is important.
This is one of the songs I like to watch reactions to when I need my faith in humanity restored. Very rarely does a reactor not get it.
This is my favorite Kenny Rogers song. He is a legend.
When you hear "They took turns at Becky" it hits you like a freight train.
Agreed. Damn good story telling. There's a time and place to fight back.
Every single time. Best. line. ever.
Ruby is gut wrenching- great song
"Don't fight. But if you gotta fight. Win." Couldn't agree more.
Everyone always pauses this song at the same point before the song & the full message is revealed. Lol Great reaction.
His Live Version of “LADY” is Awesome:)
Yes it is..I love the version Kenny and Lionel sang Lady together
THIS was one of my favorite songs growing up. Yes, I was in 3rd grade. Absolutely amazing.
Fighting should be avoided whenever possible, but some things in life are worth fighting for.
I personally believe it is a gift of God and it's beautiful to behold
“Lady” by Kenny Rogers (live performance) is unbelievable!
RIP to Kenny. One of the best to ever do it on a country stage.
Two things all men fear: The sea in a storm and the anger of a peaceful man.
That and a woman's scorn
This is a classic!!!!! I am 44 and have listened to this song for as long as I can remember 🙂 I love watching ya'll being willing to branch out to other genres!
Im 36 and listened as long as I can remember also. And the line about 3 of them taking turns at Becky STILL shocks me sometimes.
One of my all time favorite songs. I wept hard when Kenny died.
This is my all-time favorite Kenny Rogers song. My dad used to sing and play it when I was little and I’ve loved it forever
Kenny has several great story songs like this. "The Gambler' & 'A fine time to leave me Lucille' are perfect examples. For a beautiful song, check out 'Lady' or 'Through the years'. Forgot the song, "The Greatest" ua-cam.com/video/ATQ5Tab3eXY/v-deo.html
@@virgbarger You're right. That is also a great song. Kenny has too many to choose from. Sebs would enjoy it too. You are correct. A Dad would.
Don't Fall in Love With A Dreamer is another great one!
@@virgbargerthe absolute best!!!!
I love you picked a fine time to leave me Lucille. 4 hungry kids and a crop in the field.
You are just a good human - good father- good husband ❤ I so enjoy watching you. Thank you.
Kenny Rogers is amazing! He is my childhood! Riding in the backseat of my dad’s car. Listening to Kenny Rogers. Great memories.

Trist song always makes me cry, his storytelling is so captivating😢
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE WATCHING TRUE REACTIONS TO THIS SONG ❤❤❤❤❤ And you didn't disappoint me! THANK YOU!
This is a great song!!!! One of his later songs that is an INCREDIBLE story telling, is called "The Greatest". Its about a little boy playing baseball...... you will LOVE it!!
Kenny Rogers is one of my all time favorite singers. I love his voice. His ability to tell a story in song is amazing.
I miss Kenny Rogers 💗💗💗💗
"Yellow" is a phrase from back in the day to refer to a man or person who was "chicken" or scared.. mostly used in terms of fighting.
Kenny Rogers one of the great story tellers in country music.
Great Reaction Video......
This was also turned into a "Made for TV" movie in 1981, with Kenny playing the Uncle (same person singing the song)...
The moral or take away from the story...... You can only be nice for so long, and everyone has to find their line/limit.......
One of the best stories of life.
Another great reaction! Kenny is a long road to go down and you will NOT be disappointed!
Ikr? This was popular when I was a kid so hearing people enjoy these songs now gets me.
This is one of my FAVORITE country songs and definitely top 3 of Kenny’s songs
You really need to do "LADY" by Kenny Rogers with your wife by your side. That would be an awesome reaction for you to do!
"Lady" is a song written by Lionel Richie and sung by his best friend Kenny Rogers.
Yeah, I guess us bigger guys have to be like that. When we fight someone will inevitably get hurt badly and I don't really want the consequences.
Yes! I’m so pumped to see you getting into the classics of country, true country music.
Other songs by Kenny with a great story feel that you would love:
The Greatest, Lucille, Ruby, The Last Ten Years, 20 Years Ago, and my personal favorite "Love Will Turn You Around".
You NEED to get more Kenny Rogers in your life.
This is a Fantastic song and story.
"The Gambler" is Awesome!😊❤ Thank you for sharing this with us.🎉
One of the Great songwriters. We have so many story tellers in Country Music. You have just scratched the service my friend.
Love your energy ✨️
Kenny Rogers was a true legend! This is my favorite song of his own besides Three Gambler. And "yellow" means coward, in case you didn't know since this is an old song about an older time! Also, you missed a small but important part of the second verse, before he went to see the Gatlin boys. So maybe go back and give it a listen again. It changes things a bit!
You’re reactions are so authentic…I was a metal head in high school, and my wife introduced me to country. They are the best story tellers. I’m glad you found them. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Gained a subscriber tonight. Listned to three of you videos including 3 wooden crosses. Your family's story is awesome. God bless you all.
You may be recalling Kenny Rogers from "Lady", written by his great friend Lionel Richie when Lionel was with the Commodores. Starlet brothers singing
Name on a wall
Amazing story and tribute to over 72,000 men and women. 1959-1977 years
Love Kenny Rogers music from when he was with the First Edition (60's-70's) to his solo career.
I remember The First Edition.
I'm old....lol.
Love the reactions my friend! Thank you 😊
This song became such a hit they made a movie of this song. Also did a great movie called SIXPACK all about family lessons. Awesome
Congrats on never being in a fight. Just remember the 90% rule. 90% of fighting is being willing. And 90% aren't willing 😮
I grew up listening to all types of music but country has always been my favorite. Kenny Rogers is someone I have loved since I was young! So glad you got to check him out!!
You would LOVE his song "The Greatest". So would your wife and daughter. It's a beautiful, simple song about perspective.
The Greatest is awesome!
Absolutely!
OMG I almost forgot about "The Greatest"
YES!!! As a family man you should listen to it together.
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Great song. Will be missed.
I was always a backdown kinda guy until the right circumstance happened and I realized I had more power in my hands than I needed. Before I knew it I had to stop hitting a man bc of my consciousness coming back.
Kenny and Dolly's LAST Duet together is AMAZING!! Talk about a great lyric!! It is called...You Can't Make Old Friends!! ENJOY
Try his Reuben James. Great singer, great story teller. I love your reactions
You need to go down the rabbit hole of Kenny Rodgers including when he was with the First Edition
Oh yes... I always loved RUBY DONT TAKE YOUR LOVE TO TOWN.
Red Sovine singing Giddy Up Go. Great story teller
Any song by Red will do
They made this into a movie in the 80’s. You should find the movie and watch it. Really good!!
Yeah, I luuuuuuv Kenny! Grew up listening to him and know every song. :)
Love to watch your walk through country music!
One of the nicest men i have had the pleasure to meet! He just laughed when i was star struck!
Love Kenny Rogers. Great story telling.🤠
As a dad and husband, I’m 100% with you! Great catch with the key changes!
Also love the “fricks”! Definitely reminding me of my time that I lived in Logan, UT in 2000 😆
The movie is amazing. I'm 400 years old and it used to play on TBS etc and had to buy it cause this story so sums it up and Kenny is an all timer
Haha! I knew as soon as I saw you were doing this song that you'd find the message right up your alley.
They made a movie from this song with Kenny Rogers and it’s amazing!
I’m really enjoying your journey in country music. Great work!
I KNEW YOU WOULD LOVE THIS SONG AND STORY!👍👍
Kenny was in a movie featuring this story and another one, the Gambler.. Kenny also did great duets. One of my favorites was with Lionel Richie singing Lady.
Kenny Rodgers was my cousin. Never wanted anything to do with family outside of his immediate family. Lovely person who lived a great life.
Are you on a treadmill? Multi tasking at its finest haha

Nana Karen. UK. x
I'll stop anytime for this man, my first love...I'm 71❤❤❤

great reaction...one of the best for this song that I have heard. IMO, your comments were spot on.
Kenny have alot of storytelling songs. Country has a way of getting to you.
The first concert I went to was Kenny. Fantastic singer.
Ooh, have you listened to "Lady" by Kenny? You should react to it with your beautiful wife! 🥰
It was written by Lionel Richie 💖🦋
This is actually my favorite Kenny Rogers song!! Very nice of some one like you to react to it considering how many times I've seen you react. You seem like a very good guy, and I hope that is always in your future
He is amazing!! Love kenny
Sebs your reaction to this one was the best!
@@cheyennemoore8380 thank you for the suggestions ✌️💚 I do like Jamey Johnson & Chris Stapleton ❤️
