That reaction is the very reason I clicked on this video. I'm a 55 year old mostly white woman who fell head over heels in love with Kenny when I was 16. I found a version of this song with lyrics, then saw that Jamel had reacted to it. I knew "the moment" was coming, and Jamel, you did NOT let me down! The beauty of music is once it has been sung it belongs to. Everyone. Music brings people together. It always has and always will. Thank you for all you do.

Two good phrases for Tommy's type: "Beware the fury of a patient man." "Demons run when a good man goes to war." Also, to quote Eddie Griffin's grandpop: "Some people deserve a whole lotta leave alone."
This song always made me cry, even as a kid. I’m glad you reacted to this. I’m not a country music fan, but Kenny was always an exception. RIP Kenny! 😢
This was the first song of his that I heard. It is with his band The First Edition. I was in boarding school and the Vietnam war was a lived experience, as my cousins and so many boys were called up.
When I was a kid, Kenny Rogers' songs were my jam and that didn't change up until now. I still memorize every lyrics of his songs. Damn, I miss him so much. May he rest in peace. 💙😭
You're such a joyful person I can't imagine why anyone would bait you on here. Thank you for your videos, your openness to all genres of music, and appreciation for talent.
Grew up in the US Virgin Islands listening to this entire album. My grandma, mom and aunties who loved country music listened to this on Saturday mornings. Thanks for the review! ♥️💯🔥🇻🇮
This was one of my father's favorite songs....NO ONE, and I mean NO ONE was allowed to mess with his baby girl...but he was a soldier and he was stationed far away and bad things happened. Predators are everywhere.... Tommy couldn't be there to shield his wife and was traumatized...as was I when my dad was stationed elsewhere...my dad was small...5' 9" ...but he believed me...and "didn't turn the other cheek"...and proved he was a DAD!!!
Great play on words in the line "Everyone considered him the Coward of the County". In most of the song the verb "considered" refers to how the people thought of Tommy (the prevailing thinking at the time), but the last line the context changes such that "considered" means that they used to think of Tommy that way but no longer do. Great storytelling and subtle context shift in that line.
Sorry you have to deal with comments like that.. Though there'll always be someone to say crap like that when it comes to the internet. I, myself, am very thankful and appreciative that you sometimes react to country music.
I will leave you with the first part of a poem from Dr. Who: "Demons run when a good man goes to war, Night will fall and drown the sun, When a good man goes to war." Tommy was a good man and the Gatlin boys declared war by attacking Becky, they should have run for their lives from a good man going to war.
Kenny rogers was so popular and such a good balladeer that two of his songs were turned into made for tv movies. Between 1979 and 1994 6 movies were made in total 1 for Coward of the County and The Gambler series which had 5 films in total produced between 1979-1994 .
Ohhhhhhh I KNEW I'd seen coward of the county actually played out!!! No one knew what I was talking about since I was a kid, but I'd seen it, people looked at me weird, I started to think I'd heard the song so many times that I imagined the scenes lol
In addition to singing Love Will Turn You Around for his 1982 movie Six Pack, Kenny also performed the theme song "They Don't Make Them Like They Used To" for the box office hit movie Tough Guys in 1986. Tough Guys stared Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Eli Wallach, Charles Durning, Dana Carvey and Darlanne Fluegel. "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)" was featured in 1998 Big Lebowski. Kenny performed "Buy Me a Rose" on an episode of Touched By An Angel in 1998. Kenny performed theme song to his 1990 "Christmas In America" tv movie. And 50 years ago, Kenny and the First Edition had two songs featured in 1970 movie "Fools"

This has been my favorite Kenny Rogers song since I was young. It's not about the size of the dog in the fight; it's about the size of the fight in the dog. Be smart enough to know that it's stronger to walk away, but just because someone chooses to turn down a fight doesn't EVER mean they can't fight.
@@TexasMagnolia The writer was smart. The lyrics say "That crazy asian war", but that could be WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan. It's really timeless.

I'm 69 years old and everytime I hear this tune my eyes water oh brother oh what a tearjerker what a wonderful song to
This is what country has always been good at, and that's telling stories.
correction this is what kenny has always been good at..
Kenny Rogers was the definition of country music.
@@DonVaillancourt He was 70's "Pop Country-Nashville Sound" Country music. As far as Country music period, he couldnt have been more totally opposite. Its kind of funny that you consider him the Definition of Country Music. He couldnt have been more different. Hank Williams is the "Definition of Country Music".
@@1980bwc You're right. I'm thinking of all the country and new country stuff from back then that was popular and what you say does make sense.
@@DonVaillancourt agree 150%
I see this one got you, you looked like you were ready to go kick someone’s ass when you got to the part about them Gatlin boys. Thanks for the great reaction video.
I was too the first time I heard it and I was like 8

@@69smilex yeah it's actually really messed up and also I had no clue Kenny died 😭😥😰😢RIP PRESS F TO PAY RESPEK IN THE CHAT FOR THE LEGEND THAT WAS AND STILL IS EVEN AFTER DEATH KENNY ROGERS
I can’t imagine you having a mean bone in your body!! You’re such an inspiration to me!! You’re proof there is still good in this messed up world!!
I’m really sorry to hear that some of the commentators have used the n-word in here. That’s just absolutely horrible and I’m glad to see that you are strong and smart enough to just delete that crap. Keep rocking and rolling my friend.
👍🏾
Literally never seen a single commenter on here use the "n word." UA-cam usually automatically deletes such comments anyways. You sure you aren't just starting drama?
take the high road those jerks don;t you
Don't feel like u need to apologise for other people's ignorence
@@SoloTravelerOffTheBeatenPath I'm sure he deletes them.
THIS is how you do a reaction video.
Ken Hall 💯💯💯💯
Absolutely. The "Hell no!" is a classic!
I'm a 62 year old white man and it brings me so much pleasure to see younger generations of all cultures appreciate the music I grew up with.
Sitting here in Australia watching with tears in my eyes as this is one of my late father's favourite songs of all time and watching your reaction for when the song lyrics changed as I have heard it so many times
Love your channel - would love to see your reaction to Slim Dusty lights on the hill
😢😍
This Aussie lady watching it to.
Aussie here too. Love Slim and ‘Lights on the Hill’ one of my favourites. 🇦🇺
I remember SEPT 1979 like it was YESTURDAY I was 19 when this song came out,,,, Now im 60
Kenny Rogers was a legend! Will always remember him for his music and voice!
Two good phrases for Tommy's type:
"Beware the fury of a patient man."
"Demons run when a good man goes to war."
Also, to quote Eddie Griffin's grandpop: "Some people deserve a whole lotta leave alone."
"Tommy stopped and locked the door"---reminescent of The Bronx Tale "Now you's can't leave..."
That’s the image I get too 😊
Or, RUN "
This song always made me cry, even as a kid. I’m glad you reacted to this. I’m not a country music fan, but Kenny was always an exception. RIP Kenny! 😢
walk away from trouble if you can! Love your comments on that! the world would be a different place if we lived by this!
If you ever get the chance check out Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town
Also The Gambler
Love all his music
This was the first song of his that I heard. It is with his band The First Edition. I was in boarding school and the Vietnam war was a lived experience, as my cousins and so many boys were called up.
YES. Ruby, please.
That's First Generation before he went solo
When I was a kid, Kenny Rogers' songs were my jam and that didn't change up until now. I still memorize every lyrics of his songs. Damn, I miss him so much. May he rest in peace. 💙😭
Kenny Rogers was one of the best. This old woman believes everything you say. And you are adorable ❤️❤️
You're such a joyful person I can't imagine why anyone would bait you on here. Thank you for your videos, your openness to all genres of music, and appreciation for talent.
I love story songs and especially ones with a message. I have listened to this song since I was a kid
This particular number has always been my favorite.
That still brings a tear to my eye. I remember hearing this when I was too young to understand it. 40 years later and its still powerful.
Sometimes you gotta fight when you’re a man!! Rip!! Kenny Rogers ❤️Tennessee
There are some things worth fighting over in this life. Someone else's opinion of you isn't one of them.
USMCArchAngel03 Amen to that! And Thank you for your wisdom and service
Amen
#Truth brother
Damn straight. Perfectly written.
His reaction when it reaches verse 2 , gave me goosebumps , love this 💕
Grew up in the US Virgin Islands listening to this entire album. My grandma, mom and aunties who loved country music listened to this on Saturday mornings. Thanks for the review! ♥️💯🔥🇻🇮

Some beautiful women in the Virgin Islands
I always loved that one. My other favorite is Good men don't need rules. Today is not the day to find out why I have so many.
You're a great man Jamal! People talk when they are insecure. Don't pay any attention to them and keep on doing what who do 'cause you're great at it!
Edna Hatem Thank You🙏🏾
I love how someone named "Hatem" clearly doesn't! :-)
Kenny rogers was so popular and such a good balladeer that two of his songs were turned into made for tv movies. Between 1979 and 1994 6 movies were made in total 1 for Coward of the County and The Gambler series which had 5 films in total produced between 1979-1994 .
What about Six Pack? Love will turn you around
Ohhhhhhh I KNEW I'd seen coward of the county actually played out!!! No one knew what I was talking about since I was a kid, but I'd seen it, people looked at me weird, I started to think I'd heard the song so many times that I imagined the scenes lol
Rip Kenny , cried my eyes out the day he died and played all his songs
And 50 years ago, Kenny and the First Edition had two songs featured in 1970 movie "Fools"

i love you man. its weird how this song makes people feel
When I was growing up, Kenny Rogers was one of her favorite singers. This was always one of my favorites of his. Thank you for letting me listen to it again for the first time through you.
It breaks my heart that there are people like that in the world, my friend. I'm sorry that folks said things like that to you.
Keep doing what you do. I love watching people react to a song I grew up with. It's a rare mixture of nostalgia and discovery. It's joyous and it's what we need right now. You have no idea how you and other UA-cam reactors are helping the mental health of your viewers with these little doses of happiness.
There’s also a movie. Coward of the County. And Kenny plays in it. It’s an older movie. But it’s good.
Just watched it last night. Kenny was awesome in it. Watching the Gambler tonight.
@burnhuman_2 And so I found out today. I'm binge watching. On #3 right now!😊
I'm a huge Kenny Roger's fan and have been since I was a little girl. So, imagine my joy to find just recently your video reactions to his songs. Your responses have brought pure joy to my heart and I'm so glad for you that you have discovered his amazing talent! Please do me a favor and review my favorite Kenny ballad, Islands in the Stream, a duo with the wonderful Dolly Parton. :-)
I always love the way KR drops his volume when he sings "...you could of heard a pin drop, when Tommy stopped and locked the door"...sweet!
What I love about this song is that the story is there without it being graphic. That is what makes it excellent songwriting
Yes... inference is much more powerful than being too explicit!
He found the loophole in his daddy's words: "Walk away from trouble IF YOU CAN." Tommy found a situation he couldn't walk away from, because they would have just kept getting worse.
I love your reactions. They make me feel like there is still hope. Don't stop. You are great.
Man, I am loving this channel!! Your a genuine guy. And I love how open minded you are to all kinds of music!
UA-cam and their crazy ass recommendations....this time they nailed it! I literally was pumpin my fist at the way you reacted when Tommy locked that door! Instant subscribe!
This song is what happens when you combine perfect story telling with a perfect voice!
The Greatest is a great song once you hear it you'll know how up lifting of his music is
I've loved that song for many years, and I'm often reminded of the late Patrick Swayze in Roadhouse, teaching the bouncers... Be nice, until it's time not to be nice.
Keep up the good work, you're learning some wonderful music history unhindered by the usual peer pressure of what's "cool".
One of the better reviews of this song I've seen! 4:07 "Now I know what I just said." 4:53 "I dont know dad!" 4:58 _rubs cheeks_ "oooohoo!' Lol love that reaction.
Your my favorite & only reactions I truly appreciate. Your words always have a deeper understanding of music & people. Much love! (Glad to see that beautiful & soulful smile of yours.) it can brighten any day.
Lady is my favorite song by him but it makes me cry !
Another AWSOME story by Mr. Rogers!
God Bless and RIP Kenny!🙏🏽
This has been my favorite Kenny Rogers song since I was young.
It's not about the size of the dog in the fight; it's about the size of the fight in the dog.
Be smart enough to know that it's stronger to walk away, but just because someone chooses to turn down a fight doesn't EVER mean they can't fight.
You could’ve heard a pin drop when Tommy stopped and locked the door.
One of my favorite lines ever.
What a song, what a voice. One thing when you hear a KR song. You don't have to ask who it is. He was awesome. RIP. The great Kenny Rogers.
Gotta be one of my FAVORITE reactions you've done yet. Well done!!
"Lucille" was my dad's favorite by Kenny Rogers. It is powerful also.
Agree entirely right! Timeless music like this is to enjoyed by everyone... EVERYONE!
One of my favorite Kenny Rogers songs is his duet with Dolly: Islands in the Stream.
Written by the bee gees
I agree with Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town...pretty powerful for that time.
Barry Delano recorded during the Vietnam war, may be taken harshly today.
@@TexasMagnolia The writer was smart. The lyrics say "That crazy asian war", but that could be WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan. It's really timeless.
That was written by Mel Tillis. It is a depressing song, but the Statler brothers did a cover of it and turned it into an upbeat song.
Ten years ago, if you told this guy he’d be loving Kenny Rogers this much, he’d have called you crazy.
Yup. I knew you hadn’t heard this song/story when I first started watching. And I knew that you would understand that “sometimes you got to fight when you’re a man”. As soon as “Becky” was defiled. I’m with ya bro. But it’s really the emotions and storytelling that is Kenny Rodgers legacy. Well done. Yes. Someone else mentioned Ruben James as well and several others. RIP
Listen to what he said. You don’t have to fight to be a man but sometimes as a man you have to fight. It’s a great message. And thanks brother for making a reaction I’m a new subscriber
On my top ten of songs that impacted my life. I was born in 1968. This hit deep...then, now, always.
Another great, yet sad, "beer drinkin' story" he sings is Lucille... Another one with such a catchy chorus, that gets everyone singing along, just like in The Gambler & this song. :-)
I love loose will. Lol. Yep I still sing it that way when I'm drinking
Epic song, so neat to see someone appreciate it for the first time. I haven't heard it for a long time but it still gives me a chill and a tear.
This song brings tears to my eyes whenever I hear it.it has a strong message for all of us.
Oh, you're reaction to this one was priceless!!!
Check out "Just dropped in" to see what condition my condition was in. Great song.
My favorite song by him. When I heard he passed I listened to it right away. Most people don't know it's Kenny Rogers that sung it.
I tripped on a cloud and fell Eight Miles High,
I tore my mind on a jagged sky.
I just dropped in, to see what condition my condition is in
Yes!!!!!
Kenny Roger's and the first edition.
That song is Kenny Rogers before he was country
