I was around 14 when this magic happened. This song was played all over the World. I remember the day of 28th of March of 1996, like over 6.000 radio stations all over the planet, played the song simultaneously at 10:15am. It has been the biggest moment of unification that I ever lived in my life. Something that is just utopia, a dream at the day of today... I'm so glad that I'm coming from that era. Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie materialized a masterpiece that night in L.A. This song has been made for charity. A support to Africa.
This is probably the greatest musical collaboration that has ever happened and we will never see its like again. After nearly 4 decades this song still brings me to tears. It was such a labor of love, but more than that it was SUCH an important project. In the mid-1980s a terrible famine was ravaging Ethiopia and people were dying by the thousands. By the time it finally ended over a million people had died. Those images, especially the ones of the sick and emaciated children, have never left me. It was absolutely heartbreaking. This project raised over $60 million for famine relief and this song is still earning money. Again, I doubt we will ever see a collaboration of this magnitude again. Artists today are simply too superficial and self-absorbed. Every single singer involved in this project was an absolute legend and I’m glad I was alive to experience it.
I never tire of this song or watching reactors watching this for the first time.❤ I remember when this was first played on MTV, I had to beg my mom to stay up for this. She did too and thanked me after. I'll never forget that moment. ❤❤❤
I have to turn in my '80's card...I missed Al Jarreau, Pointer Sisters, Smokey Robinson and James Ingram. I called Lindsey Buckingham as the person from Fleetwood Mac.
I was a teen at the time so I didn't get how big this was!! The Amazing artists came together for ONE song that mattered!! It is one of my favorite songs now, several years later!! I love it!!
Yes but the documentary shows that not all of them followed that rule. Even Ray Charles was quoted as saying "Why am I here?" Heck, why do you think Micheal Jackson didn't play Live Aid? Because his management told him "Don't do this, it's bad publicity!"

It was a big hoopla for when it was preparing to come out and everybody was so excited and couldn’t wait. When it came out, I was blown away! They have one goal in mind and that was to make this song! It was so awesome! I’m so happy that y’all had the reaction that you did last night and then they wonderful reaction y’all had today actually watching it! Love you guys! See you on the next live broadcast!

Never get tired of seeing people's reaction to this. Mel, I think the lady you thought was Whitney might have been Sheila E. "the Queen of Percussion", she's an awesome singer and drummer!

Amazing collaboration. I am old enough to recognise almost everyone of them except for a few since I was more into rock. Have you seen the British version that came prior to this one? Bob Geldof was the initial creator this whole project, artists for Africa. You must see that one. This is my 80s, everything lol
I watched this when I was 10 years....the greatest artists together. Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote this song. Love when Michael/Diana ross sing...but my favourite is Springsteen/Stevie wonder part...and Ray Charles.....gave so much soul & funk.
There was a time in HISTORY where the WORLD CARED and HELPED NEIGHBORING COUNTRY...Those TIMES ARE ALL GONE...I'm just GLAD I was able to SEE and EXPERIENCE the GREATNESS IN ONE ROOM...
Now you need to react to the song that inspired them to make We Are The World. Do They Know It's Christmas. Band Aid. George Michael, Boy George, Jodi Whatley, Elton John, Paul McCartney and many other British artists came together for this one.
Yes!!! People forget THAT song started it all. It wasn't Quincy Jones' idea to gather artists for Ethiopian famine it was Bob Geldoff with Do They Know Its Christmas. And frankly, that song had more staying power because you still hear on the radio
"We Are the World" is a charity single originally recorded by the supergroup USA for Africa in 1985. It was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian for the album We Are the World. With sales in excess of 20 million copies, it is the eighth-best-selling physical single of all time. Also, at the beginning, you were wondering about the signatures, and yes, all those singers signed their names. I don't know where that cloth is located, but I'm sure it's worth a pretty penny, as some of those singers have passed on up to now. This was done after the AMA (American Music Awards) show and since they were there anyway for the Awards, then they all gathered together and did this. Arrangement Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner and Billy Joel sing the first verse; Michael Jackson and Diana Ross sing the first chorus; Dionne Warwick (Whitney Houston's Aunt), Willie Nelson and Al Jarreau sing the second verse; Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry and Daryl Hall sing the second chorus; Jackson, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, and Kim Carnes sing the bridge. "We Are the World" concludes with Bob Dylan and Ray Charles singing a full chorus, Wonder and Springsteen duetting, and ad libs from Charles and Ingram. The structure is said to "create a sense of continuous surprise and emotional buildup". The following people sang in the chorus: Dan Aykroyd, Harry Belafonte, Lindsey Buckingham, Mario Cipollina, Johnny Colla, Sheila E., Bob Geldof, Bill Gibson, Chris Hayes, Sean Hopper, Jackie Jackson, La Toya Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Randy Jackson, Tito Jackson, Waylon Jennings, Bette Midler, John Oates, Jeffrey Osborne, Anita Pointer, June Pointer, Ruth Pointer, and Smokey Robinson. Directed by Quincy Jones.
The reason why everyone was so humble and united was because Quincy Jones set the tone. He had a sign over the door that said “leave your egos at the door.“ And all of these stars took the time to come record this after the Grammys that evening.
Everybody always has that face when Cindy Lauper jumps in for her solo the second time. NOBODY realizes that she has some real pipes on her! Everybody just thought you was like some little pop singer but no she really has some range in her voice.
Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote this song together. Everyone that took part should be listed below at the end. There’s so much star power on that stage it’s ridiculous!!
They recorded this song right after the grammies so that's how they got all the stars at the same time, otherwise this wouldn't have had so many stars in it. They did it after the brits actually did it first with the amazing song DO THEY KNOW ITS CHRISTMAS. They actually got all the British singers to get together to record the song magically. They all showed up just from the goodness of their hearts after being invited by Bob Geldolf ( and friends ). You should check it out. It's amazing. Other countries started doing the same after the UK started it, including the song TEARS ARE NOT ENOUGH by Canadian singers and of course USA FOR AFRICA too. My favorite part is when Steve Perry from JOURNEY sings THERE'S A CHOICE WE'RE MAKING, WE'RE SAVING OUR OWN LIVES. In a room full of amazing singers, he stood out the most in just a few seconds ( and he wasn't even one of my favorite singers before this lol) . Thanks for the great reaction and keep smiling 🤘 🙂
There was also another one performed by popular latinx singers of that time (Julio Iglesias, Jose Feliciano, etc:) they called themselves "Vocas Unidas", and the song was called "Cantere Canteras", it's on youtube.
Only Michael Jackson had enough juice n star power to get the best artists of that time period (the 80s) and get them all on the same song n donate all of the profits to Africa. Michael Jackson was a once in a lifetime phenom
Back in 1984, this song was HUGE. Produced by the great Quincy Jones. There was a sign at the entrance of the studio that said, “check your ego at the door“
Bob Geldof was there (he is in the chorus). He was the originator of this idea (see “ Band Aid”) and he did the concert that Queen has the famous set in He was at this but left because he couldn’t believe how obnoxious/diva some of the US singer were behaving. Upset over the food; upset over who got to sing what; upset over amount of camera time (Michael). He left midway through the shoot
@Vern Sherris well, Quincy had some pretty Diva habits in f his own but the song turned out great. Prince refused to sing unless he could do it from his own studio. Steve Perry’s manager didn’t want him to do it - the song wasn’t rock n roll enough - thankfully Steve overruled him. Haha. I always wonders how Dan Akroyd got in there
@Vern Sherris I don’t doubt that 1) European New Wave era = 1/2 vagina right there, 2) over dramatic in all the interviews I ever saw. So I agree with you on that, but it doesn’t change what the artists on video were acting the same.
The original BandAid idea originated the idea for a record to raise money for Africa started in the UK in around 1984, by Bob Gendolf of the group The Boomtown Rats. Live Aid recorded a song with multiple groups and singers, singing a song to raise money. This was to go towards the Ethiopian Famine of the time. They also staged an all-day concert that was recorded in several countries, including the US to raise extra funds. Thirty years later in 2014, they released the song again with a fresh set of musicians to please the younger audiences, raising a lot more money in the process. The song was 'Do They Know it's Chrismas' , 1985 and 2014 versions are available on UA-cam.
Please react to Better Be Good To Me by Tina Turner..its amazing! I know yall will love it 😀 thanks for all of the videos friends. Blessings to you both 🤘✌
Website is still online! "In 35 years, USA for Africa has raised more than $100,000,000 to help alleviate poverty in Africa and the United States." That's badass 🌹
I cried seeing some of these artists that are no longer with us cause I really miss them!!! Just imagine getting all of the huge superstars and just let them be themselves but coming together for charity work!!!!!!! It raised soooo much money compared to how much it would be in today's money!!!! It would of been astronomical

What a great memory to have of your mother!
As a child of the 80s, I could give you an accounting of everyone in this song lol! Great choice ❤
Same!
This song came out when I was in 6th grade... I'm very proud to see it taking another tour. Alot of us in this country have LOST the meaning. Love you
I have to turn in my '80's card...I missed Al Jarreau, Pointer Sisters, Smokey Robinson and James Ingram. I called Lindsey Buckingham as the person from Fleetwood Mac.
I was a teen at the time so I didn't get how big this was!! The Amazing artists came together for ONE song that mattered!! It is one of my favorite songs now, several years later!! I love it!!
The greatest collab of all time. You can't help but get emotional when you watch the video or just hearing the song. Loved the reaction alot.😀🙏
Bruce Springsteen does that to everyone lol his voice has so much power
They were told to leave their egos at the door. 80's greats. MJ and Lionel wrote this.
Yes but the documentary shows that not all of them followed that rule. Even Ray Charles was quoted as saying "Why am I here?"
Heck, why do you think Micheal Jackson didn't play Live Aid? Because his management told him "Don't do this, it's bad publicity!"
@@RastaSaiyaman I saw an interview with Bob Geldof where he said they didn’t want MJ there so it didn’t turn into ‘the Michael Jackson show’ full of screaming fans and distract from the purpose of the event.
@@RastaSaiyaman Yeh , you can't bring in that many performances in one room and expect then to totally change their personalities lol. Now, when I ask "Why am I here?" at my age, I really DON'T know where I am lol
@@RastaSaiyaman good thing that he didn't, they really messed it up at live aid, they sounded terrible doing this song live , was a shame too , was really looking forward to it live .
Written by Lionel and Michael. 3rd singer "who is he?" Paul Simon, originally of Simon and Garfunkle later a solo career. So moving to this day!!!! All coming together for a cause.
You have Bob Dylan, Michael Jackson, Steve Perry, Cindy Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Ray Charles, Diana Ross, Tina Turner, and more, and you feel they are squeezin' their souls on every word and every verse...
Raised right! I love seeing people know more artists and not only Michael Jackson
This is such a classic and with artists that did so much for the music world.
I’m from Stockholm Sweden and when I was younger in school we used to sing this in music assembly in the early 2000s
Love your reaction ⭐️
I’ve seen this a million times!! Always emotional cuz I was raising kids in this era of legends! Amazing! All reactors get a huge smile on their face when MJ shows up!! MICHAEL!!! Love Tina Turner my fav female vocalist!! 💖⭐️💫✨
That was the time when stars came down from the sky and help a humanity in need. The most important and meaningful song and colaboration of all time. I'm glad and thankful it happened when I was a kid, in the 80's, the best time ever!!!

Never forget when this first aired. Amazing - simply Amazing!
I watched this 100 times, and Bruce Springsteen surprises me every time, with how powerful and raspy his voice is!
Still got my 7 inch vinyl record of this great song that still sounds brilliant ❤️ love your reaction when you saw Michael Jackson
me too
Lord, if we could have that kind of unity and care for each other today, well it would just be amazing.
It would have been amazing if we’d had it in the 80s, too!
I don’t know why but for some reason I thought they had. But then I try and rack this ole’ brain of mine and it collides with maybe it was it was the redo of Woodstock. Anyway it would be nice. LOL !!!
@@sherryarflin726 😁
This could never happen today sadly. NO egos would be left at the door. Too many egos and not enough talent
Omeomi, sadly enough I think you’d be right. 😁😁
This song brings back so many memories I remember when it first came out .The way things are now in 2024 we have to remind ourselves that we are the World.
When I requested this song last night I had no idea that y’all would do a reaction today. I am so happy that y’all did! I remember when this song came out. It was a big hoopla for when it was preparing to come out and everybody was so excited and couldn’t wait. When it came out, I was blown away! I recently saw a documentary of how they made this and brought it all together. I cried during it. All of those “famous“ people didn’t act like they were all of that. They have one goal in mind and that was to make this song! It was so awesome! I’m so happy that y’all had the reaction that you did last night and then they wonderful reaction y’all had today actually watching it! Love you guys! See you on the next live broadcast!
❤️❤️❤️
Still love this song! And seeing all these great performers makes me feel old 😁
Thx for reacting!🎶🎤💜
This is how versatile our top 40 was back in the day- so much versatility- It’s been sad there was a sign on the door before going g in- “Leave your ego at the door.” This blew us away back in the day for sure! ❤️🙌🏻🤎🤍👍✌️
Never get tired of seeing people's reaction to this. Mel, I think the lady you thought was Whitney might have been Sheila E. "the Queen of Percussion", she's an awesome singer and drummer!
Yes, Whitney was not there. That is a shame.
It was definitely Sheila E. Which begs the question, where was Prince? He was huge at this time. But I'd think he was someone who wouldn't leave his ego at the door.
@@jog8483 he was asked to be on this track, and initially was open to it, but had requested a separate room for recording because he didn't want to be in the same vicinity as MJ - I'm sure you're aware of their little rivalry they had going on. His request was denied, so he pulled out of this project
We just thought we would get these kind of collaborations all the time after this. Boy were we wrong. Once in a lifetime experience. Hadn't listened or watched this since I was a kid.
Oh my oh my. I get very emotional at this. All of my favorite artists. Michael Jackson. I love him a lot. All the others too. Such a beautiful song w/ a purpose.
A timeless musical masterpiece that definitely hits different and still brings tears to this day. You could never get a room full of legends like that ever again, RIP to those gone before us.
One of the best reactions to this song - and I've seen them all! You look so happy - keep it up!
I always get chills when Ray Charles starts singing. So much talent in that room
RC is the godfather of all pop music!
Same here with Ray, but James Ingram just does it for me & gives me the chills(his voice is just so smooth like butter)probably the most...next to Michael of course! But so much talent here and they all get me in my feels every single time and I'm so glad there are so many reactors out there reacting to this AND 💕 LOVING IT! Great message, great memories and great, great superstars ⭐
Along with new generations now getting to experience it and appreciate it like those of us who were there when it first came out, is so awesome 👍♥️
@shannon2022 👍 Stevie with Bruce, and James belting it out towards the end always brings out those goosebumps!
I always did , always will Love Cindy ... and all others too ... Ray and Stevie / Bruce on top is more than you can wish for , Ray Charles is sill the King of Lion
I was a young teen when this came out, I’m 53 now and get teary eyed everytime I watch this, so amazing & impactful.
Thank you so much for this reaction. I am 55 and this was huge when I was a teen. The first time I saw this it brought me to tears and it still does . The message in this song is so powerful. We should all love on another
I was a kid when this happened. Still a powerful song to hear. You won't see anything like this again. Next big colab like this from that era would be Band-Aid about Christmas.
sorry Andrew band aid 84 this song 85 but thanks to all the artists for helping the children midge and bob where the brains than concert live aid happened
@@bryanparker5048 sorry for what? I didn't say anything out of place.

100%,This was the Best collaboration between any artists in History!!!! Beautiful...❤
I'm 54, I'll never forget this song and time. I miss our America.
Amazing collaboration. I am old enough to recognise almost everyone of them except for a few since I was more into rock. Have you seen the British version that came prior to this one? Bob Geldof was the initial creator this whole project, artists for Africa. You must see that one. This is my 80s, everything lol
A stage full of Legends ♥️♥️♥️
I watched this when I was 10 years....the greatest artists together. Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie wrote this song. Love when Michael/Diana ross sing...but my favourite is Springsteen/Stevie wonder part...and Ray Charles.....gave so much soul & funk.
There was a time in HISTORY where the WORLD CARED and HELPED NEIGHBORING COUNTRY...Those TIMES ARE ALL GONE...I'm just GLAD I was able to SEE and EXPERIENCE the GREATNESS IN ONE ROOM...
so much talent in that room. I remember when this came out. Amazing
Love to see this .How much talent in one room you will never see this again that's when we we loved each other not hate love the good old days.
Arrangement
Lionel Richie, Stevie Wonder, Paul Simon, Kenny Rogers, James Ingram, Tina Turner and Billy Joel sing the first verse;
Michael Jackson and Diana Ross sing the first chorus;
Dionne Warwick (Whitney Houston's Aunt), Willie Nelson and Al Jarreau sing the second verse;
Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Loggins, Steve Perry and Daryl Hall sing the second chorus;
Jackson, Huey Lewis, Cyndi Lauper, and Kim Carnes sing the bridge.
"We Are the World" concludes with Bob Dylan and Ray Charles singing a full chorus,
Wonder and Springsteen duetting, and ad libs from Charles and Ingram. The structure is said to "create a sense of continuous surprise and emotional buildup".
The following people sang in the chorus:
Dan Aykroyd, Harry Belafonte, Lindsey Buckingham, Mario Cipollina, Johnny Colla, Sheila E., Bob Geldof, Bill Gibson, Chris Hayes, Sean Hopper, Jackie Jackson, La Toya Jackson, Marlon Jackson, Randy Jackson, Tito Jackson, Waylon Jennings, Bette Midler, John Oates, Jeffrey Osborne, Anita Pointer, June Pointer, Ruth Pointer, and Smokey Robinson.
Directed by Quincy Jones.
This is what greatness sounds and looks like when this is the true power of what music is and what music should be used for
Absolutely👍
I remember when they did this. All the proceeds went to help feed the hungry in Africa.
Great reaction guys. I'm an old Englishman and remember this when it was released. Legends, each and every one of them. Great American artists
Is one my favourite musics of all these years we are the world i love this music so much and i love this vídeo thanks guys i love it.
I agree!!! Steve ABSOLUTELY KILLS IT in only a couple of seconds!
There was also another one performed by popular latinx singers of that time (Julio Iglesias, Jose Feliciano, etc:) they called themselves "Vocas Unidas", and the song was called "Cantere Canteras", it's on youtube.
Steve arrived at 4:21. I noticed THE VOICE made u 2 recognize. Angelic voice from the the heavens.
Only Michael Jackson had enough juice n star power to get the best artists of that time period (the 80s) and get them all on the same song n donate all of the profits to Africa. Michael Jackson was a once in a lifetime phenom
R.I.P To All those stars that aren't among us on earth any more...They are never forgotten in our hearts
Yayyy! So glad you're reacting to this!
It's absolutely epic.
Back in 1984, this song was HUGE. Produced by the great Quincy Jones. There was a sign at the entrance of the studio that said, “check your ego at the door“
4:07 -- *JEEEESUUUUSSS!!* Bruce Springsteen and his voice! ... WOOOW!! 👀(chills down my spine)
Wish we could see something like that again.
I love in the last part Bruce Springsteen sings….u actually see tears
Love it . This is example of American spirit. We need it back a.s.a.p!!!!!
Paul Simon from Simon and Garfunkel is the guy you didn’t recognize.
Las mejores voces de los 80 y 90....pasaran siglos y no habrán otras....
Another collaboration for charity is That's What Friends Are For with Dionne Warwick, Stevie Wonder, Elton John and Gladys Knight.
YEs another forgotten gem.
Would Love To See This Generation do this Again
JEFF HEALEY CAN YOU SEE THE LIGHT 😎🤘🏻
This was written and produced by MJ and Quincy jones.
An amazing time to be alive.
So sad that Bob Dylan gets overlooked. One of the top 5 artitsts there
Spread love , joy and peace 😎👍✨
Bob Geldof was there (he is in the chorus). He was the originator of this idea (see “ Band Aid”) and he did the concert that Queen has the famous set in
He was at this but left because he couldn’t believe how obnoxious/diva some of the US singer were behaving. Upset over the food; upset over who got to sing what; upset over amount of camera time (Michael). He left midway through the shoot
Thats interesting. Whats the source?
@@SteveA308 multiple books and even the video of the make of - Lionel Richie talks about it
@Vern Sherris you can see, all the shots of Michael, he is alone. Bob thought it was too diva for a video about starving children
Blessings to you both 🤘✌
This song sold over 20 million copies and raised over $75 million dollars for Africa. It was a privilege for me to donate to this cause.
Website is still online!
"In 35 years, USA for Africa has raised more than $100,000,000 to help alleviate poverty in Africa and the United States."
That's badass 🌹
I cried seeing some of these artists that are no longer with us cause I really miss them!!! Just imagine getting all of the huge superstars and just let them be themselves but coming together for charity work!!!!!!! It raised soooo much money compared to how much it would be in today's money!!!! It would of been astronomical
Rip to all the legends here who passed away I'm 43 and still get chills from the first time I heard this as a kid
It's almost unbelievable that they were able to get this many artists in one room. So much talent.
