    Ok, I finally have my handle on a hardware set up that really works well. I've wanted to tell people about it & this video seem like the right place to share. Props to the video creators, for you have inspired me - Thank you.
    I have:
    Roland JD-XI
    Roland SP-808
    Behringer Model D
    Behringer Pro-1
    Behringer Crave
    Behringer TD-3
    Behringer Wasp (arriving Friday😁)
    Ok, now the JD has a 4-part sequencer, using MIDI channels 1 for synth, 2 for synth, 3 for synth & 10 for drums. These are predetermined & cannot be changed. So now with Behringers MIDI connected & internal JD synth (channels 1 - 3) volumes turned down, I can now sequence the Behringers till the cows come home. I can even dial in the JD's synth sounds, all while using the JD for drums.
    Now here's the kicker. The JD's drum track only goes up so far on the actual keyboard - the last 11 notes on the keyboard are not assigned any sounds. I hook my SP-808 to channel 10, set the starting trigger on the 808 to the first key that has no assigned sound & there you have it. I can also sequence the 808.
    Happy days.
    So out of the combined gear, I can get 11 'tracks' at once, if you will:
    3 outboard synths.
    3 internal synths (playing the same notes as the outboard gear, mind you).
    1 drum track.
    4 samples (polyphony of the 808).
    Whew.
    Can't wait for my WASP. It sounds great in this video.

      dude if you are still active I'd love to chat about controlling the JDXI with some behringer desktop synths. I have a JDXI and was looking to get a set up like the one in the video so I could use the JD-XI synthesiser
      does it work for step record and real time or only real time?

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  3 місяці тому

      I assume you are talking about the sequencer? This one is only in real time. So it is great for creative experimenting. But for recall, it isn’t great since if you bump a knob, everything will be out of whack.

    What about poly chaining those? That would be cool to hear.

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  2 роки тому +2

      To use them polyphonically? Well, you can make 2 units duophonic and assign a midi channel to each unit. One for the low notes and one for the higher. (Not sure if that is what you meant)

    • @MichaelJ023
      @MichaelJ023 2 роки тому +2

      Todd Urban No, seriously, it’s a feature built in to the unit! Check the manual. It shows how to set each device in poly chain mode. You can poly chain up to 16 devices using the same midi channel. Once you configure the devices to poly chain, the first device in the poly chain gets the first note, if you play a second note at the same time it goes to the next device down the chain. I’ve seen it done with 3 to 4 model D’s. It would be cool to hear it done with two different devices.

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  2 роки тому +2

      Ah, yes! Thanks for pointing that out. That would be a nice second followup video. Maybe I’ll do it as a short social media feature and post the link here.

    Great video thank you.
    I’ve just purchased a Wasp, but I’m having trouble setting it up in Logic Pro X.
    I’m also using an Akai MPK Mini and a Clarett+2Pre Interface.
    At the moment I have the Wasp and the Akai plugged into the Mac via individual USB A to B cables. Logic is recognising the two devices. I can use the Akai to create notes as normal, but the Wasp isn’t activated with any sound, even when the recognised track for the Wasp is selected in Logic .
    I’m guessing there’s a simple error in the way that I’ve connected the two devices and presumably I need some midi cables too. However, the Akai only has one USB input on the back and a ‘Sustain’ input/output. So I’m unsure how and what sort of connection I need between the Akai (to create a note/sound) and the Wasp (to start manipulating that sound) within Logic?
    Probably very basic, but I’m new to connecting hardware to my set up.
    Hope that makes sense 😊
    Thank you.

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  Рік тому +1

      You will need to select the appropriate MIDI channel in logic to transmit to the synth. (Also you need to make sure the switches on the back of the synth match the MIDI channel - check the manual for that) If I remember correctly, my video reviews how to do this about half way through. Double check it, as I think it should have you covered. Once you get it setup, you should be in good shape and can save those settings as a session template in Logic.

    Great! A question, i have a Roland PCR-800 Midi Controller, and a WASP. The WASP works with all the Midi 5 pin keyboards, even the classics?

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  9 місяців тому

      MIDI is midi, so yes. But you’ll need an adapter to go from a standard MIDI pin connector to a mini jack on the Wasp. I can’t remember but think that might have been included. If not, they can’t be more than $5.

      @@ToddUrban ah, because the controller is a little old, right? I tried to configure MIDI Channel in the Edirol Keyboard and the MIDI in the wasp, but i don't receive response from the keyboard, i don't understand the MIDI channel selector in the Wasp :(

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  9 місяців тому

      @dgpsartscrafts strange. I know the dip switches determine what channel to receive MIDI. I would need to check the manual to find out more. I would have thought any controller could send MIDI to the WASP. Maybe someone else can comment here who knows more.

      Thanks for watching. As you see in the video, there are basically 3 options. Either have a MIDI keyboard, use a hardware sequencer, or use your DAW to send MIDI. But alone, you really cannot take advantage of the full product beside generating noise or self oscillation.

    Thank you for this info, love the setup! quick question - my Wasp is operating well with my Keystep midi controller but I can't seem to get it to respond to the pitch bend or mod wheel. I've tested the wheels with a VST and they work, and I've seen comments online that the Wasp cannot receive pitch bend via midi. Have you had any success using the pitch or mod wheel with the wasp? Thanks again!

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  2 місяці тому

      Pitch cannot be controlled remotely on the WASP. You need to use the physical knob on the unit. As for mod wheel, if you can output CC and input it it can be assignable, But for most MIDI controllers, I don’t believe this will work.

    At 1:19 you connect your controller via midi to the wasp and then through to the model d. I want to do this myself so I can combine the two synths or just lower the volume on one when I only need one. I think it will allow me to keep everything plugged in and ready to go when i need it. however when i select my controller in my DAW I dont get any sound. the only way i get audio is when i select one of the synths via usb but that stops me from using the one that is not selected. Do I need both of synths to be connected Via USB or can i get sound from both with just one selected?

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  2 роки тому

      Hi. I hope I understand what you are asking. You are going to need two USB cables coming from your computer going to each module. Then you will need to set a different MIDI channel for each module (unless you want them both playing the same thing) and you will also need to set the midi channel on the switches on the back of the unit. (Check the manual for how to do that).
      This is a cool setup, as it allows you to keep both plugged in as you mention. Then you can turn the volume up or down as needed either in the DAW or on the physical module. Hope that help! 😃

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  2 роки тому

      Of course, at 1:19 I’m using midi cables and not USB. In that case, I’m just running from one controller to the module and then thru to the second module so they both receive the same note, gate, etc. So that’s a different setup and use case.

    At 00:55 you advise about connecting the audio out. How did you have the audio out of these TWO synths connected for this video?

    • @ToddUrban
      @ToddUrban  2 роки тому +1

      Good point. I wanted to cover this, but didn’t want to get too long either. For my examples, I ran everything into 2 different channels on an Apollo X4. When I use these types of modules live, I tend to take my Soundcraft Notepad so that I can have a small mixer mix the 2 lines and then send them out to the house or a monitor. It is also nice to have the 2 volume controls right next to each other on a small mixer. (Not that they are that difficult to find on the desktop synths, but you can make sure not to clip the preamps of your external mixer)
      Hope that helps!
