Hardware Upgrades for Synths?!

- We call Crave, Model D, CAT WASP, Pro-1 and all the others „semi-modular“ synthesisers. They are fully fledged stand-alone Synthesizers. But they also integrate themselves into the big modular world of Eurorack. A couple of patch cables and a single module and you’re in!
It's very easy to upgrade and enhance the sounds and capabilities: give your Crave a second oscillator, change the filter on the Model D or enhance the Neutron with a sequencer. We start small in this video by adding only a single module.
You can find all synthesisers and modules on
www.behringer.com
Me “I don’t want to get addicted to modular synths.. ”.
Behringer: “come on! One module won’t get you hooked! All the cool kids are doing it”
5 years later...
Me “... and that’s how I ended up living under this bridge”
Our mothers warned us of this =~}
Hahaha
Good one
At least it wont be cold down there with all that analog warmth lmao
This is your brain... 🧠
This is your brain on modular. 🎛
Have any questions?
I just cant get over how expensive some of the cases are. How can a box with a PSU and rails cost 800 bucks..... Good job behringer for bring these prices down. Behringer is quickly becoming my favorite in the business.
It’s appalling how the boutique industry has taken advantage of that part to full extent. I get fancy woodworkers charging a lot, but some cases are just some metal in a press break and plastic moulding. A few voltage regulators and salvaged power supply from a quality audiophile stereo you can get for free on Craigslist will be better than most supplies which are using bargain bin Chinese switching modes in a rectangle cage to mimick the look of a linear supply. Behringer may be using cheap Chinese labor and some of their modules like the neutron have noticeable flaws and “cheapness” but it’s not about perfect mastering grade cjewman modules for everybody. These synths still sound great... and this is all coming from someone with $5000 worth of eurorack. I’m even tempted to get some of these...
Just build the psu yourself. The initial investment comes out around 120, but if you want to keep going. It can be pretty damn cheap. These companies really are ripping us off with these on the profit margin. They could be sold for half the price, and they'd still come out ahead.
@@FlockofSmeagles For sure. I built this one www.metatronicmods.com/store/p9/PSU-linear-eurorack.html
Worked out to about that cost and I'm super happy with it. My other linear supply I got from buying old Eurocard cages. Another find that keeps on giving. Rackmount 84HP case for like $30-60 on ebay. Or if you're a DIY case builder, they're built out of rack rails minus the strip (besides usually 2-4 m2.5 strips).
BEST SOCIAL MEDIA TEAM IN THE GAME.
Yeah i genuinely enjoy behringer vids
I’ve been combining the Crave and the Neutron. It gets really crazy with both VCAs interacting with each other.
Dude, I want to do this. Have any videos how youre doing this? Also, can you patch the Neutron to make the Crave a Paraphonic, is that just adding an extra oscillator?
Need more videos on how to use one synth, with another.
I am back in music after a 15+ year long hiatus. Back then Behringer was something I mostly avoided as a habit. Now, I must say that they have stepped up their game, and made it affordable for everyone to enjoy music making. Well done!
Behringer caught the hardware industry with it's pants down. Because this gear is so affordable, it will end up in the hands of people who only dreamed of owning lots of synsthesizers.
I just bought a Deep Mind 12.. Love it. But yeah you are totally right.
I've been curious about this stuff for years but the cost was a real barrier for me. Well now I've got my hands on it and I like it even more than I thought I would. I've got a Model D and a Neutron. I think I'm going to stop there for awhile and really get in to what I've got.
Truth!
people like me !
my Sweetwater Wishlist has modules(and a eurorack case) in it that will "augment" the sounds of my Neutron and MicroBrute......
Behringer to synths, what Sinclair was to computers. Setting more people on a path of self discovery.
Put some of your TC-Electronics FX stuff in the same case like your synths to create a great desktop or Eurorack FX Tool, that would be great!
We have been producing with conventional sequencers and MIDI clock, controlling ROMplers, analogs, and digital synths. We just bought a Behringer Monopoly. For the first time ever, we took the CV out of an analog drum machine and put into the CV in of the Monopoly. The drum machine was “clocking” the various filters of the Monopoly. Very cool. We will be using this technique to add modulating frequency sounds that are clocked via CV rather than MIDI, while manipulating parameters live during recording into our Protools DAW. This is freedom. Thank you Behringer!
Stereo out with effects would be a useful module to add on.
Yeah, because Behringer got all the effects of TC-Electronics.
Exactly, given that a mono synth on its own is only half of the audio equation, an affordable but well thought through desktop or Eurorack synth-dedicated stereo effects module or unit would be of huge interest to synthesists.
Like many, I've bought a Zoom ms70cdr guitar pedal which allows multiple effects to be stacked, but it's restricted by its pedal format. Mooer's Ocean Machine looks really interesting, but still seems primarily guitar-oriented.
I'd love to afford the Eventide and Strymon units (still pedals) but as well as being budget-shredding they're a bit cliche, leaving a real gap in the market sat begging for a company like Behringer to fill with something interesting above and more specifically 'synthy' and flexible than their own unstackable effects on their FX600 pedal.
Great work Dudes! Can’t wait to get my System 55 fixed filter - my first step to building the complete system, but for now a beautiful filter!❤️
I gotta get that Crave at some point , but as soon as you guys announced them , I was plotting to get a 110 osc. to boost my Microbrute . although maybe 2 birds 1 stone . Boost the Microbrute with a Crave .
Semi-Modular ; the new gateway drug
Good idea,.... i am gonna try this later today, as i was starting to route and intergrate more with gear for a while a couple of days or so from now.
Behringer is really killing it in the synth market. Really impressed.
My first synth arrived yesterday, Pro 1, and I am looking for the next module. Behringer did nice job!
Hallo Götz,
Vielen Dank für deine Videos.
Ich bin ein Fan von deinen Tutorials und Behringer kann froh sein dich im Team zu haben 👍
Du bist ein richtig guter Tutor 🙏
This is fire! I will have a great time with these ideas!
Some modular pieces and that eurorack will be awesome to get when they're out! I'm imagining pairing my Pro-1 with a neutron... And perhaps a Cat or modular when it drops.
Wow this is awesome!!!! I cant wait to watch. Thanks behringer!!!
I already own a Neutron.... And I'm waiting for these 100M modules !! :o)
same here except i still need the extra powered case/box
Me too, will buy another Neutron, Sys 55 and the amazing CAT.
Really good tutorial!👏👏 More stuff like this please😄
What's not to love about what Behringer is accomplishing these days. Well done you beautiful souls at Headquarters. 🙂😀😊👏👏👏🥳
Well, what is the accomplishment anyway? To be honest: Building a giant factory in China that mass produces other's inventions? Forgive me if I'm not impressed....
@@Bagatellamusic please do it then. And sell your products for the same price or cheaper. Only then I'll consider your statement valid
@@Bagatellamusic Other ppls inventions that were abandoned, so they revived them and had to redesign them to sound the same with different modern components.
@@Bagatellamusic You are forgiven to not be impressed, but only just. Behringer don't steal inventions. Each synth company puts together synths to their own liking, and I don't see any new tech or patents flying around - why? Because they are taking other peoples tech and building a synth with it. It is only the big Japanese companies that try to reinvent the wheel. By your standard we should only have one company selling electric "Fender style" guitars or one brand of saxophone. We should only have one company selling hatchback cars, one company selling pop-up toasters, and don't try and compete with Tesla, as that would be stealing!? Why is the world of music production different or why should it be treated different? Behringer also have a big legal team, and they already told you that we have these rules for good reason - free market and stop monopoly, duh! And that giant Chinese factory is making own parts that wasn't getting made, making good vintage kit more serviceable. While seriously opening up the market of electronic music production to the world. I could today put together a complex analogue synth setup including 18 Channel Mixer with FX; Drums, Lead, Bass and a couple of poly synths, and a couple of classic synths for less than £2,500. A couple of years ago you could have cost £15,000. And Behringer made that possible. I don't know who you are or what you do, but in my world that is really impressive. And I don't need anyone to follow their path, with the scale of what they are doing, well I just need them to continue being this impressive. What impresses you? Most impressive music company of the last 20 years, why? Mine is Behringer, reasons stated.
Just saying, don't call Behringer skilled innovators. Call them for what they are: skilled replicators...
I just like to use my grandmother with a separate ADSR, which controls the filter cutoff. There are many mir possibilities I could imagine, but right now this is the most important addition I would need for my current setup
Everything is coming together. Any plans on some spring reverb and analog delay 😉
Ooo, hoping for a space echo of sorts ;)
The new dreadbox nostalgia analog delay is awesome and affordable
they have an analog delay but its a guitar pedal
It sounds super great and is also a clone and absolutely amazing for 20€
@@albonymus1682 Link? Old or new Behringer?
@@alphanumeric1529 its called VD400 and i think its quite "new" maybe max 1-2 yrs or so?

(reverb is quite expensive but i dont know many englisch websites because im from austria and always order at thomann which is much cheaper)
They also have a nice DIgital delay, Overdrive clones, etc etc
LOVE this video--great ideas for connections!
Exactly what I was thinking yesterday! Get these filters for my synths and Gogo Gadgeto Synth!
More of these, please! Behringer will be featured in many marketing text books in the future, genius-level business moves in recent years
Fun video! And yes, now I'm definitely going to have to buy some modules for "the thinthethizer" :-)
Still learning the Crave, Wasp, and Vocoder...
Beautiful superfat sounds. The combination I would be most interested in is like the first example, adding an extra oscillator. Another thing I would like to try is splitting the wave, processing the resulting waveforms differently and then mixing them together. And of course trying out different types of filters.
Great job behringer I’ll sure buy a bunch of the modules
Odyssey MIDI linked to a Model D, with the Model D audio out played through the Odyssey's audio in. Gives you a 5 osc monster when the 2 synths are mixed, on which you can use the arp, sequencer, envelope, filter and effects. The Odyssey's pitch shift effect kind of allows you to do fat pad sounds.
I love adding any modulation modules, and FX.
I'll be trying the Neutron with my new modular set-up next week, can't wait to start experimenting...
The chip tune thing coming out of the Cat made me smile. The sound of the WASP made me sit up!
Pure evil, didn´t know i needed modules before.....
You are by far, my fave Behringer demo rep! I have two of your Model D synths, each in a custom cab, and now as yet a single Crave, soon to also be mounted in a custom cab. I want the dual ADSR module, but can find it for sale nowhere! I'd also be very interested for Behringer to re-imagine a clone of the original Korg SQ-10 sequencer, about the size of your Model D synths- I would buy 2! BTW, Behringer- not only do your semi-modulars "also integrate themselves into the big modular world of Eurorack", they also integrate with PAiA, Korg, and other non-Eurorack systems, just to be fair!
He makes it look so simple!
Great Job Behringer, the funk is back.💚💜💙💛❤
A remade Behringer BCR2000 would be a pretty cool upgrade for synths.
Oh my gosh, Götz, I didn't know you work for Behringer now! That's so cool!
...I think I know whom we'll have to thank for it if Behringer starts selling DIY-kits. :D
5:00 the A-Team intro 😁
And @ 2:29 the first two notes from the Terminator Theme
Thanks for the very informative video!
thumbs up for the c64 t-shirt, you guys need to bring a sid chip based synth to the game, change the filter and modulation options but the roar sid chip ooscilator is a thing of real beauty
Awesome the cat sounded like an 80s trim phone at the start 😉
adding the 110 or 112 to the Crave looks like a great idea and something I would like to do, but I probably need a power supply and case for them - right? (if so, what would be the cheapest option?)
Cre8 Audio either the Nifty case or nifty bundle gives you a ton of functionality not included anywhere else built into the case
The upgrade I am the most happy with on my system is the reverb tank. I use it for evrything but the kick and bass. It is not a very expensive upgrade, there are alot of options and it will soften any sound, making most patches sounding more "realistic" and adding ambience to patches that may sound a bit too stiff or digital.
BEHRINGER IS THE BEST THING HAPPENED TO ELECTRONIC MUSIC. PERIOD
Sold! Have the terrific MS1, I'll take the rest. 😉 Inspiring gear, bravo.
Arturia MiniBrute 2 linked to a Behringer Neutron does it for me! Same form factor, both the patch bays line up nicely together giving a 4 oscillator, 3 LFO monstersynth.
some controllers, two Neutrons, some S&Hs and a MI Clouds. you get a perfect drone machine to help reaching the Nirvana!
Yes, a Clouds clone ... as well as a Tiptop Audio Trigger Riot clone!
@@freeform144 its not 20 years and older , so i doubt behringer will remake those modules u can still buy
You forgot Maths or its Spanish cousin Befaco Rampage :)
@@pastoelio No reason they couldn't, considering all the MI stuff is open source. Plus let's be honest, if they kicked out Rings and Clouds and some others for just $100, people would be all over that.
@@SSquirrel1976 It's open source but not for profit?
Me: It's too complicated!
Behringer: Come on! Just one module...
First ones free . . . .
Me: "Dangit Behringer Is already gave you all of my money, what more do you want from me?"
Behringer: "Everything!!!!" *makes modular synths affordable and comprehensive*
Dude, this, for real lol
Great video!
Love the t-shirt!
Please play the rest of the A-team theme song! I use my Crave with the Korg Monotron Delay all the time for jamming, but not much for producing music in the studio since the Monotron is very noisy. I love to run the KB CV to other VCO's with a buffered mult and Envelope to the VCA's on my modular to make it very fat and beefy. Just de-tuning some VCO's a bit, or even tuning them to other octaves.
aw man. Commodore 64 shirt!
Exactly I want to combine, my Crave with modular 100 or 50
When can we buy that 4hp Power Supply? need it badly! Great videos!
Was planning on doing this exact thing with the crave
I would love to see some of the tc effect pedals translated to eurorack. I’d love to put a few of those in my rack
great. love the modular. but we need a limited edition of the MS1 in the same colourcheme of the modular. i will build me a big new behringer modul wall . they look and sounds awsome. 🙏
I have added loudness velocity and a dynamic filter opens via velocity on my model D by using an additional Midi interface from doepfer.... Because I could not wait for Behringer modular. But I have the Model D!
I've got a simple question having watched this video and before that David Spiers take on the CS80. What modules do I need to mimic The Beast?
Any chance you could make dedicated keyboard cases for things like the D, Cat, Pro-One, ect? Nothing big just something with a dedicated 2/3 octave keyboard and a case. Cheapest ones I can find are like $350 for handmade wooden ones.
I'd go for at least 49 or even better 61 Keys with Pitch and Mod Wheel, Velocity and Aftertouch. And I second that wish, as there is nothing really fitting to these synths. The quality of the odyssey keybed is pretty awesome just it's to short for a bunch of typical solo stuff. Behringer seems to have made some keyboard controllers in the past but seems they are not available anymore.
Patient Bear is patient. The go case is on the must buy list. Looking forward to rebuild a Mono/Poly on steroids, because unfortunately it´s not on B´s laundry list at the moment.... Well, meanwhile I gonna frankenstein that with a bunch of modules and hopefully yours are available at shopping time :D
Can't wait!
Collectively we are still waiting for the modules and the go racks.
So when and how much?
Cool tutorial.
Loved the video! That modular series looks awesome, can't wait to get a module.
PD: that filthy frank thumbnail lol
Love this !
Great stuff.Dont forget a dc coupled audiointerface.
Is there some web resource out there to easily explain patching of hardware in detail? Like for those with a couple synths, drum machine, sampler, midi controller, and audio interface. how does one figure out what plugs in to where to get it all working together? I read someone say their ruined their O-Coast by patching cables wrong and it fried the thing.
I am very impressed by this video, but every option he shows is intimidating because how is a person to know all those different cable connections to make?
Great T-shirt!!! C= for life.
I hope Behringer will enter the patch cable market, they are stupidly expensive for what they are. We’re going to need lots of them for all our Behringer modules. Stackable cables are especially expensive!!
Falling headfirst down the modular rabbit hole is all your fault, I bought a neutron and a modal d when they first came out, then I had to get more eurorack modules. I found one of the most useful modules to hook up to the neutron was the Ornament & Crime (O_c) module, it takes a while to get your head around it, but it really opened up lots of possibilities with the neutron.
The only combination I'm able to do right now is Odyssey and Model-D, and I simply do that over midi. However it's amazing being able to combine Moog and Arp sound so you can get real bass power similar to Stevie wonder sounds. And that for less than 1000 Euros. Having said that - I understand why people might want a Bodyssey Rack so you could add that easily to a behringer rack.
I need your 2600. Release it to us please!!
Behringer is making it a lot harder to not be broke lol
any idea when the modules and the cat are coming out?it also could be a good idea if you sold the crave as a euro rack module thats way itd fit in a case just leave the wooden side check off it and bottom of the case im sure you could do it and it should be slightly cheaper than the standalone crave
So my question is, if I wanted to buy that 110 module for my Crave synth, and I did not want to buy that huge "eurorack", is there a small "housing box" to put the 100 module in? Is there also a like an ac to dc wall "adapter" that powers the 110 module?
I'm just here nerding out on this shit, still don't fully understand but just enjoy watching this kinda stuff 😁🤘🏽
Modular/eurorack tutorial videos like this make me want to buy some eurorack modules. Makes it seem less daunting.
Wow, when the second vco kicked in, the sound started to soar. I am in the process of choosing a sequencer, no hury though.
I am curious how the keyboard arpeggio works, Is that caused by an Odyssey?
Just here to show love for that pimp my synth logo 😍
For my personal interest right now. I'm leaning the other way. I'm hoping Behringer will clone the Arp Pro-Soloist or Roland SH-1000, Yamaha SY-2 the Minitmoog something along those lines. Also the Solina which I think is on their horizon? A preset analog synth and a string machine is a wonderfully musical pairing. Sure it's fun to paint with every crayon in the box but it's sometimes also inspiring to just draw with an artist quality pencil and a fine piece of paper.
English native speaker: There is this synthesizer-themed store on South Street in Pittsfield, Massachusetts
Me: Don’t speak Slytherin
Wait, is there really a synth shop in Pittsfield??
The Sunshine Group That is exactly what I was wondering!
I googled it to no avail. Sure there are music stores with keyboards...but I'm not sure about synths!
Guys, seriously!? You didn't get the joke?
Americans cannot speak English like a native. They struggle with pronouncing any English word that contains vowels, i.e. that is most of them! 🤣
F.Y.I. I am a native Englishman. 😉
"You say to-may-to, I say to-mar-to, let's call the whole thing off." 🤣
3:20 man it sounds so beautiful
Unleash the CAT we ARE ready, and want to hear you. Lmao 🤣 🤣🤣
My Neutron and Model D have been entangled since day one to make one crazy big synth.
I'm waiting for the system 55 modules. When will they be available?
Hey commadore 64 shirt! I remember having to load my old c64 and type a bunch of commands to load games 😋
Cool C64 T-Shirt!
I just want to know when all the eurorack modules and complete eurorack systems in a case will be coming out and how much?
3:15 Chip tunes on analog, how did it come to this. Lol.
Thanks, great tips
This is what I was thinking of doing with a crave, if I could find some sort of very cheap oscillator module.
That full synth voice (the 110?) is only about 99 American though you still need a case - try the Nifty Bundle or just the Nifty Case by Cre8 Audio my personal choice for the best deal on Eurorack in the game right now
Awesome!
is the video footage "realtime"? I am wondering about the settings on the crave which should not sound as they sound here - see the cutoff frequency or am i missing something?
My ideal system: System 100 or Behringer 2600 driven by the sequencer in my Arturia Minibrute 2S.
Are the system 921B oscillator the same as the Model D ones? They are very useful for psytrance fm stuff but I dont wanna carry the model D around anymore...
Question, if anyone can help: I have a Korg Minilogue XD and wanted to know if i could use both, at the same time, by playing the Crave with the Korg's keys (yes) but also input the Korg's audio into the Crave's filter, effectively making the Crave a multi-oscillator synth. So specifically - I like the Crave's 3340 and ladder filter, but I'd like to add an oscillator or two by playing the Korg into the Crave. So example, a saw on the Crave plus a square from the Korg, all running through the Crave's filter, and being played using the Korg keys. Does that work or is there some snafu with say, the envelopes not activating correctly?
Hi guys, total modular noob here!
I just got myself a Crave unit, and I am loving it so far! I'd love to expand on it with one more OSC from Behringer System 100, but do I need some sort of external power for this additional OSC, or will it power itself via connection with Crave? I see the little wooden housing in the video, but I don't know is that just for securing it, or does it have power outlet? Thanks in advance! :D
yes, you will need a Powered Eurorack Case...... check Doepfer as they are the creators of the eurorack format.... Intellejel, Tip Top Audio, Doepfer, MakeNoise, and Arturia all have fine powered cases..... Behringer makes one now as well.....
An important module would be a polyphonic midi interface for 100 m , the original also had a polyphonic keyboard option , if you make your filters and osc double like you did it is the logical step
