  • A recent comment from producer & director Yoshi-P brings up an interesting topic of discussion: How big should a Final Fantasy 9 Remake be?
Is it possible that this potential remake would follow the FF7 Remake trilogy?

What are your thoughts about the possibility of FF9 Remake being episodic similar to FF7 Remake?

Not a good idea. Honestly stopped caring about FF7R after the first one. I don't want to wait half a decade to "finish" a story. DLC is fine if there is something to add, but the core game should come to a satisfying conclusion on it's own.

@@andrewshaw7762 hard agree. going from remake to rebirth makes remake feel unnecessary to even try to engage with. i just blasted through it for the story and took my time with rebirth instead. when part 3 comes out i'm positive it'll just be the same case. i play for story, not necessarily content/gameplay and this episodic release just makes both aspects awkward.

FF7R trilogy did a lot of stuff wrong for me that I don't wish to see in other FFs. The mulitpart thing is for sure a part of it. And I thought a lot about this. Ultimately my conclusion is as long as they keep it atb / turnbased I will play it anyways because turnbased gameplay never fail me to be fun. I hope though they do a lot of stuff different from what Rebirth or also FF16 did. Especially in terms of gamedesign as a whole. Never played games that bored or annoyed me so much as these two. Making worlds so big that they still feel empty even if they added a bunch of stuff to it is one example. Such a weird experience. Make it smaller. Add just a few things. But make them great and memorable.

I'm also in agreement that FF9 Remake does not need to be Multi-part/Episodic/Ambitious like FF7 Remake, as while FF7 Remake's structure does have some upsides with lore expansion and characters, and other positives gameplay wise especially coming from Rebirth, critical acclaim. It does have it's fair share of cons, as stated with diminishing returns, fatigue and padding, and stuff being cut for the sake of parts, with Remake being Midgar only, and Rebirth having not Playable Cid and Vincent, as well as how long this whole project will take to finish, ever since it was announced.
The Resident Evil Remakes, Dead Space, Persona 3 Reload, Super Mario RPG and even other Remakes from Square Enix (i.e Live A Live, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D, Star Ocean Second Story R, Trials of Mana and Romancing Saga 2 Revenge of the Seven etc), none of them are stretched into multiple parts, and yet are widely beloved and some have generated a profit in someway.
So there's more of a benefit for a FF9 Remake to be a one game, complete experience, traditional (close to 1:1 style) Remake. I do hope that TGA does announce it, as this game has been rumoured and leaked (TWICE) to death, with Square Enix currently denying or confirming it's existence among also other recent FF9 content that has happened, as it's currently their worst kept secret. Or if not at TGA, maybe, and it's a stretch if Nintendo does their big Switch 2 Reveal maybe this month (like Switch 1) and maybe a full presentation like in 2017, and FF9 Remake is in their lineup (like how Dragon Quest X and XI as well as Octopath Traveler 1 was revealed as part of their lineup).

I'm think it should definitely be along the lines of a Super Mario RPG sort of adaptation or pretty much all of your examples for sure. From everything we've heard it does seem to follow the original more closely than what FF7 Remake is currently doing, so I do hope that ends up being true. If Nintendo end up getting a deal to debut the title one their new console that would be absolutely huge for Square Enix.

i get this feeling that a traditional ATB final fantasy remake would bring a lot more fanfare. more than what they've been getting, which is what we now know as "unmet expectations" whatever tf that really means.
this is one of the more beloved final fantasy's. if they do some nomura bs with it again i'm actually gonna be upset. it does not need to reinvent itself to bring in new fans.

When It comes to the original games, It's best that they try to stick as close to the original DNA as possible. The episodic approach while trying to switch up the story along side exclusivity are the three things that are killing 7 Remake when it should be Square Enix's cash cow right now. I think they need to be as faith as they can with the original games while keeping it in one full game.

Oh trust me, this will be another FF project i ignore.
Ff7 remake was immediately put on "see ya later" status.
If they're so good, then ill pay attention when the game IS FINISHED.
i am NOT tuning in for 8-10 years waiting. All set. If 9 doesn't drop at once ill play FF7 LONG before i waste a second on 9.
Gtfo of here with this shit.

@@phant0mdummy While I’m totally with you, and having to wait for the full remake to release is annoying as hell, It’s important to note nothing is set in stone here.
If anything all the leaks point to this Remake being a lot more 1:1 to the original and being much smaller in scale.
I personally don’t see Square Enix doing another trilogy like the 7 trilogy. It just isn’t viable to do so.

@@MoreLimitless_ My view of the leaks is a little different. In the beginning, it was often said that it was very much based on the original. But then it was said that a lot had changed internally and that it would take a few more years. Then more and more things were added that were more along the lines of FF7R. Major story changes for individual characters. And now there's the multipart thing. I can't tell how credible all of these things are. And I'm not completely against new twists. There are a few things where I think it would be cool if FF9 had done them differently. But of course I'm also very worried that they'll go too far again.

@@Evidancer the way I see it, why wouldn't they split it into 3? Sell it once for 70, or 3 times for 70 each.

    • @Evidancer

@@phant0mdummy It is well known that this is more of an economic risk than a sure thing, as the number of buyers usually decreases with each sequel. And they also know that it was an unpopular decision to split FF7. I know there are many reasons why Rebirth didn't live up to sales expectations. But no matter what the reasons actually were, it proofed how big the risks are. Especially if the second part fails and they have to make a third one. If they split it again, they have to take into account that many fans won't buy the first part because they're waiting for the finished story. As well as that many casuals will lose interest after the first part. They can't run a safe business with so many unknowns.
