I honestly think its just my m8 specifically. A few diff comments out there mentioned it happened to their m8 but also plenty of people saying they never had that issue. It’s honestly sensor failure and kinda sad but ima ride it until the wheels fall off
@@MarcusLloyd Ahhh bummer! Well I guess it's luck of the draw then if I pick one up used then huh? I know the M9 has corrosion issues but I haven't heard about issues with M8
I believe you have a sensor issue as I also own the M8 and use it almost daily with my Q2 Monochrom and never once experienced anything like that in my images. I'd personally send it in to get checked as its a fabulous camera.
Hi thanks for a great video! Would there be a chance to try your preset from Leica m8? The colors are amazing. I would love to see how it would work on my m9. greetings!
Its close, but the M8 images are (more) devine. Like you say its a reliability thing with the M8. I did side by sides with the M8 and Q when I had it them and Q looked nice, but just didn't have that organic feel to the files. M8 I would barely have to adjust the files colour wise, they just looked great.
This is a dope video! Got my m8 this year and i have never been so in love with a digital camera before! And your vids def help with the process.. That CCD sensor is something we have to cherish while its around. If i had to shoot with cmos sensor, i'd just use my SL2-S. Anything past M9 i feel like all the same to me.
@@MarcusLloyd i have been using my m8 more than any of my camera's, i must say it's worth investing. I may pick up another one since these are getting harder to find and i think the price is steadily increasing as well. It's something to keep in mind esp on your copy acting up sometimes.
Great Video, but the m10 is not as bad as everybody thinks. Comparing both pictures without knowing which one is which might be interesting. I own both and love the m8 for its mechanical feeling but i think i sell it and keep the m10.
I think it very difficult for us to see differences in resolution over an entire image at 4K on a monitor so colour and lightness/balance will be the things. But obviously dependent on any processing. It would be interesting for you to also share the raw files from each? I chose the M8 about 3/4 of the times. When I didn’t it was because the M10 photo seemed better exposed. It was interesting then to hear you mention problems with the M8 as they related to exactly those M10 winners. I also wonder if auto white balance differences were at play? But, pleased to find another video where someone likes the colour and rendition of the M8. There really does seem something film like to my eyes, after using film for most of my life; something I didn’t find with Sony or Fuji
Yea it’s hard to truly do a comparison but for me it was about seeing the photos from my own style and taste and deciding from there. Ya know? I want to see each shot exactly how I would shoot it and edited exactly how I would edit the shot. That way I can make my own real conclusions
@@MarcusLloyd Yes, I appreciate your thinking but if it wasn’t too expensive of time or money it would be good if you could do a short video with a couple of raws from each so we can gauge starting points. Or maybe add a link to a couple of images viewers could download to compare as quite a few UA-cam photographers do. A lot to ask I know, but if you don’t ask. . . !
I have a couple of questions. First of all nice Video!! enjoyed it. What lenses did you use on each camera? The may have put a huge influence on the results.
I saw the failed photos from the M8 and thought if you have tried underexposing the images and editing in post? CCD pixels can somehow bleed the whole row. I have the same problem in my M Monochrom (CCD), where either dropping ISO or underexposing fixes the issue. It's good until around ISO 1000 or so. After that, I may get these vertical pixel rows with different exposure. Most of the time, however, these won't appear, and I can shoot ISO 10000 without problems. I have set up the camera to underexpose either 1/3 or 2/3 stops all the time, which is helpful also for protecting the highlights, which I cannot recover like I can with a colour camera.
Nice comparison Marcus. I really prefer the colours of the M8 over the M10. I didn’t catch which lenses you had on both cameras. While technically the M10 has a more modern look the M8 reminds me more of film which is what gives it its character.
Just picked up the voigtlander 28mm f2 ultron, excited to start shoot with it on my M8! Your photos are amazing, do you do any post processing for the images or are these mostly raw?
Currently saving for my first m, and had me thinking about my choice to get a typ240 with this video lol. Ultimately I’ll need better low light performance than the 8/9 ccd sensors allow if I’m going to drop that much on a body but this really had me thinking that in the future I might get an 8 for environmental/product work. I think the red was a bit too saturated for the skin though.
Hi Marcus, what an intresting experience ! Thanks alot for sharing your thoughts and your images with us all. Are your photos JPEG's or DNG/RAU's ? I also use an UV/IR filter on my Voigtländer 35mm 1.4 Nokton. Thanks for the Zeiss Tip you gave in an other video. Up to now, I do not have the sensor problems you showed us on your pictures ! I also enjoy the quality and the simplicity of the M8. Frequently, I swap the M8 with the Q. Take care, Greetings from Antwerp, Roger.
Hey Marcus...great video man.....i have to agree the M8 is a gem...its also a 10 Meg camera...goin up against the m10 it holds its own. Im bummed about your sensor man...I have an m8 and I never run into the issues you have with those streaks...how many click are on that shutter....maybe she's goin out soon brother 😪....I hope not...love your content man....also if you can maybe share your presets....im curious on how you work those files. Thanks again for a great video man.
Love your images. Is it me or are your M10 images darker than the M8 shots? I wonder how they would compare if their exposures were more closely matched?
Well, that wasn’t what I was expecting. I thought the M10 would be better especially if you processed the images, though as a recent M8 owner and lover I am biased. I wanted it to ‘win’. So I had my son look. He’s not really into photography but loves the image quality in tv shows like Better Call Saul and the first series of Breaking Bad. He chose the M8 images nearly every time.
@@MarcusLloyd To be honest, it didn’t surprise me. Not a photographer but has an “eye”. Could easily see the difference in cinematography between series of Breaking Bad (it dropped off for some reason; maybe went from film to digital?) and loved the image quality of the new Batman movie.
I think her skin looks way more natural shot on the M10. On the M8 her skin looks a bit too red. This could be because the M8's colors get a little funky with less exposure. This is similar to my experience of shooting with the M8 way back, sometimes skin tones were good, sometimes they were too red especially in darker shots. I do see more of a color shift going on in the shadows of the M8 which can be a good look or frustrating depending on the situation and might be part of what people like about the CCD look. Also, failure is not a small thing! For me it's pretty much a deal breaker. Not being able to trust a camera means I probably won't take it on a trip or a big job. So then what's the point? I think you could easily match the richness you like from the M8 files by boosting exposure, contrast, and/or saturation on the M10 files that you think are lacking. The difference on the pancake shot was about 1/3 stop of exposure and a bit of saturation. It's much harder to remove a color cast than it is to add one in post just like it's easier to reduce DR in post than it is to add it back when it's not really in the raw file. I had an M8 many moons ago and while there was a lot I loved about it, ultimately I found all the little quirks (IR filters, crop factor (having to use a 28/2.8 instead of a 35/2.0 or a 35/2.0 instead of a 50/1.4) lots of noise at iso 1600, small buffer so frustrating for portraits!) had me looking elsewhere for a more flexible camera with better user experience. I also went through phase of thinking that I could get a cool look by shooting with a CCD sensor Nikon D200 but after comparing the shots with my D750, I ultimately thought the colors from the D750 felt more natural (despite really wanting to love the d200).
I was hoping your conclusion would be the M8 as I thought it rendered the more interesting colors. That said, I seemed to like how the M10 handled skin tones in the portrait sessions.
Great video as always man! I also cant seem to let go of my M8, the ccd sensor just gives of such rich colors. Btw, what lenses were you using during the comparison, I‘d love to know
Thanks for this comparison. It is always nice to see how relevant the M8 still is today. I’ve never seen that type of failure from the m8, granted I rarely took mine over iso 640 or pushed the files much. Were the color issues due to pushing the files in post? Some of your photos were heavily back lit and would require pushing the shadows. Videos such as these remind me how stupid it was to sell that camera. Cheers!
@@MarcusLloyd Now that I’ve had more time to think about this sensor issue, I remember hearing of M8s doing odd things when they experience low voltage issues caused by older batteries. I know they are not cheap, but have you tried a new battery? Does the issue only occur when the battery is under 50% charge?
Man, I love your video. I now have a M8 and Fuji XT2. The image from M8 is just superior and more vibrant although XT2 is more versatile. BTW, In your future video, see if you can compare M8 and M9 ? That would be a fantastic comparison and not much youtube videos have it covered. Many thanks for your video again. Nice job :-)
It would be more adequate to use the LEICA M9 and M10 , instead of M8, to me. If you consider the LEICA M9 as the M8, but with full frame, ... it would be much better and closer comparisson between those two cameras. Basically: We have the two FF sensors of the such opposite breed but also with similar resolution.
Honestly, could have fooled me. Both look amazing and if you swapped the labels I wouldn't be able to call out the specific attributes or strengths of each camera like dynamic range, sharpness, etc.
I believe that the more advance cameras get, like the M10, the more we tend to admire the less advanced look such as of the M8. The M10 hat more details but I prefer the artistic look of the M8
The artistic look comes from your "printing" or post processing skills. Even when shooting film, your work in the darkroom or the type of printing press used largely determines the look of the image. Marcus used the same preset for two completely different file types so the comparison just shows how each file takes to his preset.
@@marcgabor9690 I disagree. The artistic look comes from the medium (mp, lens, film type) and it can be enhanced in post. You said it your self… how each file takes to his preset… shouldn’t they look the same then? So you telling me that a picture from my pin hole camera will look the same as from my m10 if only I give both the same post process???? Nope
@@j.k5654 Not at all. first of all comparing different lens effects is different than manipulating tonality. I am not suggesting that you can create the look of a particular lens in post nor am I suggesting that you can create the tonality of a large sensor from a small sensor. If I apply my (RAW) presets for Nikon to a Canon or Fuji file, they will look very different. But if I take the time, I can get the image from one to look like the other by using my eyes as I subtlety make adjustments. I've worked as a DIT, retoucher, and I spent years working in the darkroom, and I can tell you that great photographers are all either great printers or they employ great printers. You want a warm natural look, it's not about picking the right camera, it's about manipulating the color balance, then adjusting the hue/sat of individual color channels to keep the skin tones looking natural, bringing down highlights, dodging and burning, etc.. When you get it right it looks natural, like it just came out that way. The more information you have to work with the better (which is why a lot of commercial photography is shot on med format, it's not the resolution, it's the flexibility you are afforded by having more dynamic range and color depth).
@@marcgabor9690 What ever dude. It’s always the … I have been doing this for 30+ years guys who think they can just conjure up some ish and everyone will follow. Good for you.

@@patrickcazer the m8 is suppose to be the safe choice when it comes to sensor corrosion but obviously im not really in a position to say that confidently lol

Beautiful pictures from that M8, but that CCD corrosion is a bi***... On the other hand, you are lucky enoughh that camera still works at all. My Olympus C5050 died all of the sudden and there was nothing I could do to save it 😭

Yea its just my m8
Good to know I almost make me skip the m8
solid video bro! love seeing all work you’ve been putting out 😎
Thanks fam! One day we gotta go out and shoot and make a episode.
@@MarcusLloyd so down bro
Was the speed up to 8000 on the failed photos of the M8 ?
great video Marcus. The hue and saturation is more film like on m8.
Absolutely
I bought a m8 yesterday and I think it’s not too late when m9’s ccd have lots of problems
I've owned an M10 and M11 and always wondered what M8 images are really like....good looks
Hi thanks for a great video!
Would there be a chance to try your preset from Leica m8? The colors are amazing. I would love to see how it would work on my m9.
greetings!
I have both cameras. Not better, just different and for different uses. There is something about the M8 that just does it for me!
facts
Its close, but the M8 images are (more) devine. Like you say its a reliability thing with the M8. I did side by sides with the M8 and Q when I had it them and Q looked nice, but just didn't have that organic feel to the files. M8 I would barely have to adjust the files colour wise, they just looked great.
Perfect word man. Divine!
🎂 Happy B-day !!!
Thanks bro
I really love the M8 pics more that those from the M10. Colors are way nicer and they really pop. Thx, makes my decision easier😂
Yea m8 is better but the iso limitations is the only thing
Great video, thanks! Which lens did you use on each camera?
35 biogon zeiss on m10 and 28 voigtlander ultron on the m8
This is a dope video! Got my m8 this year and i have never been so in love with a digital camera before! And your vids def help with the process.. That CCD sensor is something we have to cherish while its around. If i had to shoot with cmos sensor, i'd just use my SL2-S. Anything past M9 i feel like all the same to me.
Very true bro. I have to decide what my next move will be since it seems like mine is dealing with sensor failure
@@MarcusLloyd i have been using my m8 more than any of my camera's, i must say it's worth investing. I may pick up another one since these are getting harder to find and i think the price is steadily increasing as well. It's something to keep in mind esp on your copy acting up sometimes.
@@john240881111 yea I might grab another one for sure
Puhhh… I am absolutely positively surprised by the M8!
It’s a bad boy
Great Video, but the m10 is not as bad as everybody thinks.
Comparing both pictures without knowing which one is which might be interesting.
I own both and love the m8 for its mechanical feeling but i think i sell it and keep the m10.
Very true
Zeiss 35 Biogon on m10 and voigtlander 28 ultron on m8
I have the M9 & M10. The greatest regret I have was not buying the M8 first when it was considered inferior to the M9's sensor size 😢
Thanks for the tips Toni
Great Video, beautiful location 👌🏼. Definitely agree with the warm/cool tones in the M8 and M10 looks more consistent, I thought a tad richer too?
Yea I agree
What camera did you use for filming? :)
Fuji xt30
Nice comparison Marcus. I really prefer the colours of the M8 over the M10. I didn’t catch which lenses you had on both cameras. While technically the M10 has a more modern look the M8 reminds me more of film which is what gives it its character.
Yes exactly bro. Well said
Just picked up the voigtlander 28mm f2 ultron, excited to start shoot with it on my M8! Your photos are amazing, do you do any post processing for the images or are these mostly raw?
I edit but very little
Hi Marcus, Hello, I just bought the m8 and the voigtlander after seeing this video! So inspiring. However, what filter do you use? A big thanks !
It’s the uv/ir cut filter
do you sell your presets? would love to use/see them as a reference point. you always pull out the best colors!
Thanks Michael. Not at this time but something I may consider doing.
great video thanks
Currently saving for my first m, and had me thinking about my choice to get a typ240 with this video lol. Ultimately I’ll need better low light performance than the 8/9 ccd sensors allow if I’m going to drop that much on a body but this really had me thinking that in the future I might get an 8 for environmental/product work. I think the red was a bit too saturated for the skin though.
I feel you bro….grab a more updated sensor for sure if you need it for low light situations
wifey just chilling hahaha. Great video!
Hahaha thanks bro
Hi Marcus, what an intresting experience ! Thanks alot for sharing your thoughts and your images with us all. Are your photos JPEG's or DNG/RAU's ? I also use an UV/IR filter on my Voigtländer 35mm 1.4 Nokton. Thanks for the Zeiss Tip you gave in an other video. Up to now, I do not have the sensor problems you showed us on your pictures ! I also enjoy the quality and the simplicity of the M8. Frequently, I swap the M8 with the Q. Take care, Greetings from Antwerp, Roger.
Hey roger, These were all jpg files. Enjoy your m8 for as long as you can
Hey Marcus...great video man.....i have to agree the M8 is a gem...its also a 10 Meg camera...goin up against the m10 it holds its own.
Yo thanks Rick! Yea it might be failing on me but I will probably just get another one tbh
I think sthose streaks came by lighting the file up . The M8 doesnt like that
But sharing your preset Marcus would interest me also
Is the M8 fullframe or APS-C?
Crop sensor
@@MarcusLloyd so the 28mm is x 1,5? around 40mm?
Love your images. Is it me or are your M10 images darker than the M8 shots? I wonder how they would compare if their exposures were more closely matched?
Thank you! It could be the metering because I basically kept it all the same
Well, that wasn’t what I was expecting.
Oh that’s really cool. I love that your son picked the m8
A few people have mentioned the skin tones being better for the m10. Great observation.
I was hoping your conclusion would be the M8 as I thought it rendered the more interesting colors. That said, I seemed to like how the M10 handled skin tones in the portrait sessions.
The m8 fa sho
Great video as always man! I also cant seem to let go of my M8, the ccd sensor just gives of such rich colors. Btw, what lenses were you using during the comparison, I‘d love to know
Thanks Marc, I used the 35 zeiss biogon on the m10 and 28 voigtlander ultron on m8
New shooting with M8 what the lens is you are using. 79 years old sold all Nikon.
Voigtlander 28 ultron
Thanks for this comparison. It is always nice to see how relevant the M8 still is today. I’ve never seen that type of failure from the m8, granted I rarely took mine over iso 640 or pushed the files much. Were the color issues due to pushing the files in post? Some of your photos were heavily back lit and would require pushing the shadows. Videos such as these remind me how stupid it was to sell that camera. Cheers!
Yo Steve I think I might have sensor failure coming soon. It’s sad to realize that now but I will ride this bad boy till the wheels fall off
@@MarcusLloyd Now that I’ve had more time to think about this sensor issue, I remember hearing of M8s doing odd things when they experience low voltage issues caused by older batteries.
Yea if I get my hands on a m9 I will definitely make that video
It would be more adequate to use the LEICA M9 and M10 , instead of M8, to me. If you consider the LEICA M9 as the M8, but with full frame, ... it would be much better and closer comparisson between those two cameras. Basically: We have the two FF sensors of the such opposite breed but also with similar resolution.
cant argue with that. m9 is pound for pound a better camera than the m8
why the m8 has so many colour bars in image
I love m8!!
Amazing camera
Great video, thank you! The M10 files do look really dead compared to the M8 files.
Hahaha
Honestly, could have fooled me. Both look amazing and if you swapped the labels I wouldn't be able to call out the specific attributes or strengths of each camera like dynamic range, sharpness, etc.
Love to hear this
Great Video!
🙏🏾
I just came to see some nice photos of paradise, but now I’m an accidental M8 fanboy.
CCD color is king
Yep yep
I believe that the more advance cameras get, like the M10, the more we tend to admire the less advanced look such as of the M8.
The M10 hat more details but I prefer the artistic look of the M8
You said it best right here
The artistic look comes from your "printing" or post processing skills. Even when shooting film, your work in the darkroom or the type of printing press used largely determines the look of the image. Marcus used the same preset for two completely different file types so the comparison just shows how each file takes to his preset.
@@marcgabor9690
I disagree.

What ever dude.
It’s always the … I have been doing this for 30+ years guys who think they can just conjure up some ish and everyone will follow.

what about the M9?
Never shot with one
@@MarcusLloyd gotcha! I only ask because It would be a sweet comparison against the m10 since both are full frame

@@MarcusLloyd i'd love to see it, i've always wanted an M8 or M9 but i was always scared of the sensor corrosion comments i'd read. I did test an M240 once it was a really fun camera
@@patrickcazer the m8 is suppose to be the safe choice when it comes to sensor corrosion but obviously im not really in a position to say that confidently lol
it will be great to mention clearly about gear since only ir cut filter makes m8 and m10 looking in the same color tone. it will be great for newbies. Thanks!
Yea I forgot to mention the ir cut filter in this video.
M8 Pls
Just love the M8 files.
The M10 files look mediocre.
2010, I bought M8 at rice of $2500, now I am waiting M10 Price to be same....
some how I don't like the 240s...
Asking politely, Is there anyone wanna sell any M8 here? I'm from Vietnam and my last wish in life is owned an Leica Camera, specially M8 model.
Beautiful pictures from that M8, but that CCD corrosion is a bi***... On the other hand, you are lucky enoughh that camera still works at all. My Olympus C5050 died all of the sudden and there was nothing I could do to save it 😭
M8 sensor doesn't corrode, it's something in the CCD getting overloaded temporarily. Corrosion would show up as the same in every shot. The M9 sensor did corrode (technically the sensor glass).
@@woutdezeeuw1604 Wow, I was misinformed. But it's sad anyway...
