How Big Can You Print With The Leica M8

- The Leica M8 has a small sensor size by modern standards, so just how big can you print from a 10 mega pixel sensor, I put the camera to the test.

The detail on the chair print is incredible
LOVE the chair image!
Your pictures are so full of soul that I can literally feel it. I’ve been a fan since the early days of your UA-cam videos and you still have that magic touch. It’s a privilege to be able to view and soak in the mood. Thanks
Privileged to have you along for the ride, thanks Izzy!
DUDE! That chair print! That image was amazing. They were all great, I'm so jealous of the fog you get down there! But the chair - what a special shot. Amazing man.
Yea I love this image, cheers mate! Fog and NO snakes!!
Glorious work, love the M8 and the rendition of that amazing sensor.
Thankyou!
I have to say, it's absolutely excellent! The mood you created throughout the video was exquisite, capturing a unique and captivating atmosphere. The soundtrack complemented the visuals and enhancing the overall experience.
I was particularly impressed by your distinctive creative approach and attention to detail were evident in every frame, making each shot a visual treat. It's clear that you have a keen eye for aesthetics and a talent for capturing beauty.
Your video stood out to me because it had a certain tastefulness and elegance that is often lacking in other works. The way you composed each scene and played with light and shadows added depth and a touch of artistry to your photographs and vids.
I’ve been shooting with a M8 Elmarit combo for about 5 months now and love it! Thank you for this, those prints are beautiful!
Thanks so much for sharing this video. As a fellow M8 shooter, I am constantly amazed at the performance of this beautiful little machine. Others still scoff a little that I am using such an “ancient” camera, but I love it and the images that it captures. Kudos on those beautiful prints!
Great vid Paul, impressive shots and prints.
A genuine thirst and love for creating and photography. Loved this Paul! A lot of what you say is a lot of what I think. The final prints, class 👌
Thanks Mali really appreciate it!
Exceptional images Paul. Love your enthusiasm and excitement! Those are amazing prints. Congratulations.
Cheers Rolf
Shot on Leica/Kodak. Great image. Epic print. Filmic and digital. M8 is undervalued. Win-win for us.
Well Paul, excellent work. The image with the dramatic sky was fascinating.
Paul, let me start by saying thanks for doing this video. You seem as excited as I am that you did this and got the results that you did. I knew the M8 could handle a fairly large print but I had no idea that it could go this big and hold together the way it did. Your shots are incredible and the printing company did a fantastic job. Congratulations on the photos and thanks again. Ernie
Thanks for the initial request Ernie. Yes it definitely held together and could be pushed a bit further I feel. Take care!!
Far out, great prints and images!! Perfect size! Well done Paul and PCL!!
Thank you!
Outstanding, Paul. As you say, printing is what it's all about.
Like you, I have a Leica M8. I took it to Paris and ended up making a 11x14" book from the photos, including plenty of double-page spreads (14x22"). They're all razor sharp and look beautiful. It's a little powerhouse, that camera. The only one I'll never, ever sell.
I've got access to up to 200mp if I want it, but it's amazing what the M8 can do with good glass and a compelling subject. Your pics prove that, time and again.
And congrats on the collaboration and kudos for the way you've executed it. Having watched your channel for a few years, I know you would have thought about it for a while. It's worthwhile story telling. No complaints from me.
Hi Steven, yes long thoughts on this one but time to move forward. Glad you enjoyed and I appreciate the continued support. Long live this little camera!
Great video! Thanks for taking your time on making this review. Really appreciate it. Keep up the awesome work 👊🏼
Your welcome!
Excellent work!
That Chair image - Outstanding Great video
One of my favorite images I shot is from more than ten years ago, shot on a 12 megapixels Micro Four Thirds E-PL1. Thanks to AI based upscaling (like you've shown) and AI based noise reduction I managed to produce an astoundingly brilliant 30 by 40 inches print which I had professionally framed. There is not a spec to criticize when looking at it from a reasonable viewing distance, you will have to step so close to it to lose perspective of the whole scene to see it fall apart just ever so slightly. The sizes you printed from the M8 are not an issue at all.
Damn that is an amazing shot, absolutely love it. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers Wally
The audio in the first 3 minutes doesnt justify a Leica Shutter sound. It was the most characterised camera shutter sound, comparable to a Hasselblad.
The M8 shutter is not just a click, but like a door open or and keylock open. Also the rewind sound is very mesmerising.
Ever newbie hearing this sound will know this is not just another camera.
Fantastic video Paul. Really helpful and informative. Thanks mate.
Cheers mate
That chair was seriously awesome! Love unusual finds like that, the colors are spot on too!
Thank you
Great images and wonderful prints, thanks for sharing. I completely agree that there is nothing that compares with printing your photographs; it completes the creative process. Now I am going to check out the Enhance tool in LR. Cheers, Chris
Cheers Chris
Paul thanks for this video, very informative.
Your welcome
Wow, and that’s just a 10mp camera.
Great job my friend
Very good job!! Indeed, 10 megapixels are enough for fine artish photography, where some noise is acceptable (artistic wise). And in the case of M8, don’t forget the lens factor! Leica M has the best lenses out there. But I thing for landscape or cityscape photos, 24 megapixels should be the bottom end. I am using a 24mp APSC camera and I am able to print up to A2 sizes without visible noise, but for really big prints you need north of 32mp. And the results are very dependable on the print quality.
Oh no.. I missed on those prints. Hope you take more fabulous photos to sell online! Great job !
Great Video Paul, I love your Channel and your Photography, thanks for sharing
Thanks Tony really appreciate your comment, take care!
Looking at Your photo i think you could take good picture even with cheep camera.... You are amazing
Great print on that chair in the woods. Did you use an infrared filter for the shot? I recently bought a M8.2 and was able to get some good color images without the filter.
Thank you. Very inspirational.
Thanks David
Some lovely photographs, Paul. I used to have a Nikon D200 which had a superb 10MP Sony CCD sensor, it was APSC of course. I could print up to A2 with no issues from the NEF files generated by the old D200. I have to be honest that I always used base iso, Nikon AF-S lenses and quite often the camera was solidly mounted on a proper solid tripod.
Thanks mate! The shot of the chair was shot on a tripod, I was blown away with the sharpness and detail.
Hi mate, they are absolutely beautiful shots, especially the chair in the forest, and the printing is magical !! I’m really surprised, from a 10mg sensor and not even FF ! (Makes some kind of comment about Leica’s M11 60mg sensor…). Congrats Mate, that’s Art, that is !! )
Man alive, that chair in the forest picture is a stunner - what a terrific find!
Yea special
Top work mate that chair was an awesome find I have a two seater in that colour might go grab it to complete a set. Love prints all round top team w
Ta mate
Hi Paul another fabulous video. Your new book arrived here yesterday beautiful work. .You’re absolutely right photography should be seen it should be shared. So projects like a book, zine or print is what we should be doing. You’ve inspired me and put a fire in my belly I’m going to produce my own book!
BTW it’s such a shame there are only three prints . I’m sure more subscribers would love a copy. maybe you could consider a limited run of smaller copies.?
That's great news! So glad something I have done has inspired you to go on and do the same, that's what it's all about... giving back! Go DO IT!!
Love the image of the chair in the forest!
Thank you
Great video. Answered my question as I ponder a M8, and brightened my day with your lovely images. All the very best, cousin - from a cabin in a swamp in a rain-forest in Taranaki.
Good onya mate
@@PaulCSmithPhotographer And u too for being up early. Hope you've got better light than we have this morning! Go well!
I was curious about that new enhance feature. Good to know that it works well! Awesome photos :-)
Thanks man!
Great print that chair.
Wow - that opening shot of the hill made me think I had gone into some Hollywood movie by accident ... great stuff!
Yea cost me a lot of money to shoot that scene
Great video you are so enthusiastic..Fab prints.I have messed around with enhance recently and you can crop like hell (if that's ok for you).Just another tool in the box, cheers.
Cheers mate
I like the idea of you making a video for each of your prints and attaching a link to each print when you sell it. It will tell a unique story to each print you sell, I think it will also increase the value of your prints. Good luck! I bought one print from you today ;-)
Thankyou Thomas, really appreciate the feedback and support!
Incidents of isolation was delivered on Friday to me hete 8n Ireland
I have your previous one also.
Looks great thanks Paul 📷👍
Ps I totally agree about looking for local images
Great shots here and inspiring
Hi Eltin thanks for the update, take care!
Brilliant images! Thanks for enlightening viewers on the workhorse that is the M8! If you don't mind sharing, which lens did you shoot with? Thank you - cheers!
Hi Danny the square shot of Mount Kahu was with the 28mm Zeiss, the other 2 were the 50mm Summicron
Great video! Do you use m8raw2dng? and you shoot without an IR-Cut filter?
Hi there, no straight from camera into Lightroom. The IR filter is sitting in the cupboard gathering dust I never use it, bit naughty really 😊
Great job! Love the m8!!
Hey Alan did you get the books I sent?
@@PaulCSmithPhotographer yes thanks!!!! Lovely!!!
A3 with my 8.2. Stay safe! Hope to meet you in the future when I travel to NZ again.
Cheers
The statement at 3:00 is a little funny, considering the location you shoot at 😄..
Considering that your location is some peoples Iceland, it really doesn‘t feel „true“.. but i agree that in principle a photographer should be able to find good shots anywhere..
Depending on the location, the difficulty of finding these shots will vary dramatically.
Some places just are incredibly unremarkable, which especially at the beginning as a photographer will make the barrier to entry a lot more difficult to overcome.
Some places are so unremarkable they are truly remarkable, it's just how you frame it.
Yes - the chair image is awesome although I couldn't help wonder how an extra image with your very regal dog sitting in it looking off to the side or straight into the camera would have looked? An additional trip back to the chair maybe? (Note: I am a dog lover so to me all images with a dog in it are fab 😀)
Now you'll have to pay for framing aka triple the price of the printing - which always cripples me. Lol
It’s pretty bonkers what the M8 can produce, I’ll have to check out the enhance feature on Lightroom 👍🏻
Nice! What File Format do you use for Transfer to the printshop?
Raw file DNG to Jpeg
Absolutely beautiful images. I think Gregory Crewdson left that chair for you! Trouble is you’ve just convinced me to scratch a long term itch and do a second bid on an M8. I can’t afford!
Oh, and a print. Couldn’t resist and amazed one was left. As excited as you were to see it!
Thanks mate appreciate your support, I don't quite have the budget and crew that Greg has lol
@@PaulCSmithPhotographer But a higher hit rate!
Your too kind
This is a serious question and I apologize if it sounds ridiculous but I have been away from studying the current image enhancing programs available for photographers. Family life has even killed my time doing photography for the last six to eight months. The question: Is what I heard about the Lightroom Enhanced program function to double the resolution from the ten megapixels to a twenty megapixel image correct?
10 MP can be enough for these prints if you don't need to crop. I crop a lot because 75mm is my longest lens and 24 MP is ideal for me. Great images, would appreciate to have fog here.
Great pictures. Incidentally what lens did you use?
50mm Summicron
Great video. I have got to say I love the fog!! And I have to ask… did you sit in the chair? 😂
Thanks Dwight. First rule of photography... never touch your subject! 😉
A little bit of fog photography ... hmmm, have Adrian @aows fog shots inspired you ?
Only kidding Paul, those fog shots are great as always ......👍 👌
Photos always look better when in print form.
Thanks John!
Great images and prints - love the pylons in the mist the best - is it split toned ?
Hi Ivor, no this is a colour image, and from memory I may have tweaked the colour balance a little.
What size was the print and what would that have cost if you or I paid for it?
What are the specs of the paper and uprez size
Specs on my website, go check it out over there
Paul, you live in a kind of a photographers paradise, always foggy. …Or is that you wake up very early? 😉 Great video, thanks!
Yes I don't make enough use of our fog here there is plenty of it, sometimes till after noon.
Kind of d3000 + 30mm sigma results on screen - but then WOW
what size are they Paul?
Printed on A1 the large prints and 600x600 for the cropped image
Thanks..I assume 600x600 is mm? Cheers from Victoria, BC
amazing, beautiful, love it... to much times. Man, the pictures is great, but fill the speech with content. Listen to Jeremy Clarkson maybe, how he speech
Thanks for the tips!
The music sounds like an India raga ...
I thought the back of the chair looked as interesting
you can print with anything even 10 year old point and shoot with 12Mpix , as large as Empire state building , becase no one will watch it from close up counting pixel , so it is irrelevant , by the road side you will find Adds and banners that are not even 1 Mpix , not even 200x200 pixels sometimes . So there is your answer , you can go as big as you want , the bigger it is , the further away you look , so its pointless question .
Thanks for sharing your wisdom
You can print 10m wide using your M8 - it all does depend on what you are satisfied with. Many people are happy with their shitty smartphone images, it's just how low you set your personal quality expectations!
Your chair image shot with the SL2 and a prime lens would blow away the very same image shot with the M8, according details, especially if printed large.
sorry but its a no go to touch prints without gloves. you did that at the first print.
Yes I know my excitement got the better of me
😭
Great video, thanks a lot. I took a quick test and compared LR Enhance + Resolution to Topaz Gigapixel AI. The results are mixed. Some areas managed better by LR, some areas are better via Topaz. The biggest challange is handling the bokeh. You can see the results here: drive.google.com/drive/folders/1TlGW3OwASfiWW6VBZ82XHIrrgl2KeG8g?usp=sharing
