I sold mine… regretted ever since. Thank you for the video reminded me precious memories. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I enjoyed your video on using the M8. Nice to see you taking advantages of the M8 ‘features’ (some would say limitations) and having fun and being inspired to do some very good photography with it.
Thank you!
Very nice photography Justin. Loving the nostalgic look.
Thanks!
Glad you are playing with the Leica. I picked up a “beater” CL that’s been a joy because of the size and ability to use M lenses.
Your street photography has gotten better by leaps and bounds the past few months! Great to see your style really starting to grow...I totally agree, I took up street to improve my cinematography skills, and wound up falling in love with street. Currently shooting on a medium format GFX 50R and don't think I'll ever stop loving it!
First: Thank you! And that is awesome about Medium Format. I would love that
Great video Justin. And even better photos. Nice work. 📷
Thank you! 🙏🏼
i'm a huge fan of these street photography videos, and yeah this got me looking at the M8, and also yes! cameras like these are definitely instruments!
I’ve just rewatched this video, and there’s absolute bangers in there and colour and tonality to die for. Kudos.
Thank you!
Love the shots, Justin! Really interesting moments captured here!
Thank you! 🙏🏼
@@JustinPhillip My pleasure!
As a snapper all my life, your worst day shooting would be my best day ever.
Totally get where you're coming from so I'll forgive you for going over to the red-dot side. 😊
Keep 'em coming.
Best of luck from me in the UK.
The replaced sensor is also the Kodak CCD sensor. You can also just replace the low pass filter as well.
I thought they aren’t replacing the sensor? Just the glass cover that does over it? I could be wrong
Sensors replaced back in the day, definitely still the kodak sensor. Dude in the video had that wrong. I think they replaced whole sensor? Not 100% tho now I'm wondering. I know there were different options...
Glad you’re enjoying the camera. Thanks for the video. Ernie T
Yeah, Dude!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Beautiful pictures man! Love the colours from the M8! That Kodak ccd sensor is 👌🏽👌🏽 I have the Olympus E1 which also shares the same Kodak ccd sensor and colours/images from it are amazing. Hope to get my hands the M8 one day!
Thanks!
The ccd sensor on the M8 is the sweet spot between analog photography and digital. The files it produces both in color, and black and white, are in a genre of their own. I did some of my best photography to date with that camera. I’m currently shooting with a Q2M. Great video!
Awesome! Thank you
@5:24 I bought the 7Artisans 75mm F/1.25 from you Justin :) I calibrated it using my own tools. It's an awesome lens on my M240 starting at f/1.8ish, not so on the M8, it is too soft until f/4. It is definitely large but I kind of like it. I use it to hold the camera and since the focus ring is a bit stiff it does not de-focus by accident while composing. All in all, I think it is a great lens and renders very nice. Love your videos! Keep up the good work!
Hey thanks! Awesome, glad you’re enjoying the 75mm. Definitely a cool lens!
I loved watching your video. A M8 was my first rangefinder with the 40mm Summicron that I loved and wish I had kept. It’s a camera that makes you connected more with what you see around and those colours and BW files are truly beautiful.
Thank you! everyone who uses that 40mm Cron loves it, maybe i should never sell mine!
I have shot a Leica m3 and M4 for years along with a Nikon D700 and Sony A7. The M8 is a whole different experience. It is like "digital film". The more I use it the less desire I have to shoot film which troubles me as I love my M3 and M4
Hey Justin, really like your photos with this camera. I never gave a thought for the M8 once the M 240s came out. But the results you’re getting with the M8 are really reminiscent of film right out of the camera.
thank you! i thought so as well! that Kodak CCD sensor really was a gem! Unfortunately, the M8 was a slippery slope for me! I ended up swapping over to the M6 AND the M10!! 😳
“Is that the Sigma you sold?” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Thank for the video. You were at my home away from home, Union Station...I've seen you around.
Nice!
Ohhh I loved 🥰 listening to that shutter during your video
Glad you liked it!!
dude ! this is great !
Love some of the results.
6:50 works great, one of my favorites from the ones you showed here.
BTW, megapixels do not matter. You can print as large as you need to with this kind of genre photography. No sweats. You're not shooting landscape, architecture or wildlife with this camera.
Thank you 🙏🏼
@@JustinPhillip Hey Justin, your photography is noticeably improving every time you post, every time after you've gone somewhere to photograph with dedication since you've picked up the M8, forcing you to think, not relying on camera capabilities to take the shot. It really shows. The M8 already is an amazing investment into yourself and your skills! Can't wait to see what you'll do with it over the years!
Any time you're up in Seattle area, do a shout out, we got a great local photography community up here, someone (me including) will point you to the good photo opportunities here. Cheers from WA!
@@weisserth Awesome! Thank you & would love that!
Great video, really enjoyed it.
Thanks for sharing

M8.2 shooter here…. Is the 90mm a hassle to focus…. I just have a 35 and 50…. but sometimes would like something longer.. that usually when I head to my xt3… great video…
75mm f/2.5 is my go too for portaits as of late! Its excellent & still small. Voigtlander
Great video and many good shots! Thanks!
Many thanks!
Truly great and inspiring. Thank you 🙏🏻
Awesome. Thank you!
Interesting video, very nice and clean shots 👍.
Thanks Jay!
Leica M8, my fav by far
i sold my M8 a few years ago and i regred it, your Video just has given me back what I was feeling shooting with this camera. You maybe understand what I do next ..... Thank you
Hi Justin, thanks for the great review. How do you achieve the great green and blue color rendering? Do you have a special preset? Regards Frank
Thanks Frank! I just use Lightroom and a preset made specifically for CCD sensors. Check out One Month Two Cameras, she has an awesome lightroom preset for CCD
@@JustinPhillip thanks Justin for the quick reply, will check with one month two cameras, also a channel which i like very much. By the way just received my first M8, already enjoying the X1 and digilux 2 :-). Br Frank
I have owned both the M8 and M9, ultimately settled into the M9 as it's still got much of the CCD magic, no IR issues, the extra 8mp really helps with a mild crop, an extra stop of usable ISO, and no focal conversion. All of that said, the M8 colors are SO unique and the 10mp files are INSANELY sharp. I also truly adored the top led shot counter. The M8 felt like a prototype, it's a weird half working compromise, but that's also part of it's charm.
I agree. Recently saw an M9-P that looked awesome. But there is something about this M8. I also like it for a poor mans infrared camera. The results are very interesting with the right filter & conversion.
@@JustinPhillip honestly shot without an IRcut, and desaturated, it's the best monochrome M outside of the monochroms, by far.
Great video, I found your comment to be so true. "This camera will remind you how bad you suck" lol. I did a recent video where I contemplate selling my motorcycle for a Leica. Been trying to find a good M8 for all the reasons you mentioned.
😆 Thank you!
Congratulations, you will love that camera! I have owned one 3-4 times already (and might get one again at some point) before switching to M9 and then, eventually, to the M Monochrom. Black and white files are excellent from that sensor, and colours do look like old Kodak. I never bothered with IR filters myself, never thought the lack of them affected my images (plus, i was converting most to B&W anyway). I tend to shoot mostly my MM nowadays, or an RX1 I had converted to monochrome, an M8 would give me color options (I carry a Ricoh GR for that) with M mount. By the way, the sensors in the M9 (and MM) never "corroded"; the issue was with the glue used to attach the cover glass to the sensor, it eventually started to detach when exposed to moisture. At the time Leica replaced it on both my M9P and my MM, no longer an option today. M8's sensor is exempt from that issue.
Are you the one selling the monochrome rx1 on ebay right now?
i do not believe there are other ones out there, so , yes! @@trels203
M8 is an amazing camera. Only issue is the battery drain and the banding that happens after awhile. The use of IR cut filters and the 1.33 crop never bothered me. It's a little monochrom beast. I've owned about 6 of them.
why u even own 6 of the same camera ?
@@mitismee It's my favorite daily camera and have backups for different use cases: casual, weddings, travel, etc. I have them in black, silver and the M8.2 version. Got them while the prices were low.
The filter size is 40mm. Get a B&W 43mm UV/IR plus the 43 > 40 stepdown ring and you are in business. That's how I did it.
For the 28?? Thank you!
@@JustinPhillip You help me, I help you. ;o)
I got a M8.2 due to the same hunger for less perfection and more chaos one week ago (using Sony A1, when I need technically perfect, but boring photos...). At the moment, I go through the same stages, so I really enjoyed watching your video.
I like the colors, you get right out of the camera, especially the much more differentiated and rich red and blue tones. May I ask you for the additional processing making your photos look even more "vintage" and even closer to Kodakchrome?
Thanks! For this video I just use LightRoom & always shoot RAW. Just basic adjustments. I dont go too crazy with actual color adjustments, other than saturation and exposure levels.
Good for you. I think you are 100% correct about that M8 sensor. FYI: I just received my Leica M11 Monochrom and thus far loving it. By forcing myself to think Monochrom I’m able to see things I simple did not previously.
The M11M gets you a usable 100k ISO. It’s truly an amazing camera. I plan to speak to this point over on my channel if you’re curious.
Awesome! Most def will
i just been shooting more digital now and enjoying my olympus ep 3 a poor mans ricoh gr. Im enjoying all of your street photography videos
Thank you
Cool Video. A lot of nice pictures. Inspiring.
Thank you, Thomas!
Beautiful images, man! Did you shoot dng or are these jpegs?
RAW, always raw. Thank you 🙏🏼
“I for one want more chaos in photography” Brilliant‼️Me too✌️🇦🇺
Can you recommend an ir cut filter?
bhpho.to/3oljfsA
@@JustinPhillip thank you
how is it with the framelines using the 40 summicron-c?
I found its better to jump to the 35 frameline for better accuracy. But that does get annoying having to flip the framelines every time. But at least you can still do that with the M8. The newer Leicas like the M10 & M11 did away with the frame line selector, so may be even a bigger hassle with those, unless you use live view
I confirm the leica m8 is incredible with its kodak ccd sensor
Did you edit all photos on this video or it's SOOC and you post it? thanks for your video
no i have my own look applied. (i have a hue deficiency so don't mind the weird color shift if there is one 🤣 )
@JustinPhillip it looks great! I'd like to buy a leica but i hesitate between the M8 or the M9
Does the M8 have a BW shooting mode or did you convert to BW in post? Thank you!
If shooting in joeg it does have B&W mode.
Nice and honest Leica video, much appreciated.
Thank you
All images in the video are original images from the camera or have been edited, with beautiful classic colors. Thank you
Nice work Justin.
Thank you! 🙏🏼
Sensor corrosion on the M9 is not exactly the sensor that is corroded, but it is the IR-cut filter on top of it. When you have it replaced (or you do it yourself, like I did) it is not the sensor that is replaced, but just the filter. So you keep the original sensor.
I bought it cheap (900€ or 940$), because of the corrosion, ordered a chinese replacement filter. I took of the bad filer and glued on the new one. Now I have an good working M9 for less than 1000$. A good advice: If you DIY, you should be a bit handy :-)
Love my m8 I’ve used it almost every day for the last 12 years still going strong
Awesome!
Great video. Really leaning into this M8. What would be the 1 lens you recommend getting first?
The 24mm or the 28mm. Still have framelines, and the 24 is FF equiv. of a 32mm or 28mm is the equiv. of a 37mm
Were you shooting b&w jpegs or converting color shots in post? You got some great pics on your day out.
Thank you! No i just always shoot in raw
👍
Hey, how do you like the camera in terms of infrared photography, and did you perhaps try it with a Kolario Vision filter? I looked at your other videos but saw nothing about infrared :(
I havent done a full video on it yet, but yes i did take quite a few photos with the filter. It’s still not the same as a true converted camera but it does do better than other digital cameras ive tried the same filter with. Perhaps i’ll do an infrared video soon.
Here’s some i put on instagram a while ago: instagram.com/p/CrjWTfcy7qI/?igshid=YjVjNjZkNmFjNg==
What do you shoot video with?
Sony & Red
I wish you add the original sound of M8 shutter reload 😁
it's in there
How much did it cost? I'm trying to get one on Ebay and the prices seem insane for such an old camera, so just curious!
I paid 1800 for this one, only had 648 exposures on it. And then i sent it to leica for CLA
Great video!
Thank you!
Leica M8 fantastica .
I love this vlog ALOT i almost cry tho. Idk. It’s exceptional
Wow. Thank you! 🙏🏼
keep both eyes open.
I know its so hard for me, im left eye dominant, so i think my brain is forced to close my left eye as if it’ll make the right one stronger! 🤣🤣 but good tip!
Beware that 1/8000 shutter speed. It is unreliable and can cause the entire shutter to fail. On the M8.2 it was eliminated, and most users suggest forgetting it is there and stopping at 1/4000 lie the later cameras.
yea, most definitely. I rarely shoot that high. But am aware of this fault 🤙🏼
I trust that your LA street photography will be strictly curated in order to prevent naïfs from understanding the collapse taking place.
The Leica replaced the original M9 sensor. At some point that sensor also will fail. Cost about $1200 to replace the sensor to a non corroding sensor.
Leica already replaced this sensor
@@JustinPhillip yes but the replacement sensor also corroded.
I have never heard of the M8 corroding. I dont see how it would. The M9 corroded because of the way it was designed. The only issues with the M8 is the IR pollution.
@@JustinPhillip I have never heard of an M8 sensor corroding and mine was fine. It is the cover glass on the M9 sensor that corrodes as the wrong cover glass was used. The first Leica replacements were just more of the same flawed CCD sensors up until mid 2017. After that Leica used a CCD sensor with the correct cover glass and thy should not corrode. You still get the CCD sensor and look. Kolori Vison can replace the cover glass on these sensor in many cases, again, preserving the CCD sensors.
I watched your short video here at youtube you told someone that you are using a film. But here you clearly mentioned that it's not a film camera
It’s the Leica M8.
@JustinPhillip I'm confused, you said on your short video at miami beach that you're using the M8, and you told someone that it's film. But here on this video you said it's digital but close to film with it's 10mpx sensor
Picture at 15:20 is gnarly. Great video
Now I want to buy this camera , what have you done 😂
🤣
Will never part with my M8, best out of cam colours and easiest to edit raw files. Love it!
💯
It is not the M9 sensor that is bad but the sensor glass That is what corrodes. The sensor glass can be replaced leaving the original sensor in place. I have the factory replaced sensor glass plus circuit board. Same great color. Both my M8.2 and M9 do great color. The M240 is close but not quite the same. The M240 can be goosed in post to imitate the M8/M9 colors. The M8 does shine in B&W.
Kind of regret not getting the M9, just for full frame.
Привет. Сделай видео по колоргэйдингу.
Can't justify buying film stock anymore, way to expensive both to buy and develop. even if these photos are beautiful it's just not worth it for me
Are you going to hype this for 9 months before letting it go because of a fatal flaw? 🤞🏻
😂😂 Probably!! No, idk, i’ve actually tried to stop liking this camera, but its weird, i just cant stop using it
I dislikestreet photography nots treetphotographers... boring concrete, people mstlydresed thesame, jeans etc.
no oetry , past masters of the leca, had more interestng envronments for their 'mreasurng vieewrfinder', as leitz used to call it. cameras are tmr machines, one needs to step off ones local street for inspiration, prthaps.
👌🏼
haha Sorry but man is that m8 so bad! Glad it's getting you to shoot tho!
"Yeah? Well, you know, that's just like uh, your OPINION, Man!"
5d classic > m8 , price , lenses choice.
