I’ve use waste oil as well or used to and never had any issues at all. In fact I swear it made my bar and chain last longer but I will admit most cutting was done in the winter so maybe that’s why? I started trying actual bar oil again but I can say I never had any issues with oil pumps or oil filters in the saw.
I thin my bar oil for winter use with kerosene, just like the old loggers did. I have seen where several youtubers have used vegetable oil for bar oil, so any oil is better than nothing ! That 340 is definately a home owner special. Runs good thogh !
Nice saw,I have a Homelite 54 same saw just numbered different for Canada and international saws. Its a German saw made by Solo for homelite.I have a 240 Homelite that really rips for its size also.
I run old oil in all my old saws I strain it through a paint strainer..looks like poplar it's good to get a fire going heats ok but doesn't last long..I'm not too picky I've burnt alot of poplar it beats a snowball haha
Hi Smitty!!😀😀 The tree looks like basswood to me. I ran drain oil for many many years!! I finally got sick of my pants and boots turning black from it when I was logged daily with a saw instead of a tree harvester. I never had a bit of trouble with extra wear while using it. It was just messy.
@@Smittyschainsaws basswood is even softer than popular. Dosen't make very good firewood. I call it gofer wood. Through a piece in and go for another. LOL!!
That does look like poplar. If is relatively green and you cut it, has a peculiar smell- kind of like fresh mowed grass or weeds. You should buzz some of it, just so you can see how it cuts! I ran used oil for years. I just found it was really messy, on me and the saw! Totally right about it being better in winter though. Regular bar oil is like motor honey! I am still not totally positive the 3/8 lp is right for that saw. .325 had an 8 tooth sprocket. 3/8 is 7. Everything seems to point to standard 3/8- but the stock bar sure looks like lp and the sprocket tip is for LP. Really interested to see how it cuts again with some tuning!
Leafs look like popler but bark looks like ash... that's a question for logger John I think 🤔 the true test is when you cut it, if its sorta Yellow n stinky it's poplar lol you can get heat from polar but it's not that many btu's and my gosh does it ever have a smell when it burns lol
Help me here, I don't really understand what LP chain is, is that like a 3/8" driver chain, with .325 cutting teeth ??? The 340 is not too bad if a saw, looks to be a little bit lighter than a Super XL, better for smaller stuff
Kinda yea. Same 3/8 driver but less cutting surface. It’s for the smaller cc engine that can’t pull the larger chain. It was cheaper to manufacture because one driver fits a lot more saws.
used motor oil from your car works great i use what i have for oil and never had a problem

I would buy new engine oil if it was cheaper than bar oil.
Poplar 👍 man she was cutting good! Nice running saw looking forward to watching this rebuild progress. Take care!
Thanks 👍 You need a hot saw!
Runnin good buddy can't wait to see it Smittyized. Love it man. Thanks for sharing. 🌲❤🌲🪓✊
You and me both!
I usually run ATF for bar oil when I first get an old saw. ATF is a detergent and cleans out the oiler if the old bar oil in it is hard and crusty.
Good tip! I need to remember that one!
Suprised it calls for lowpro chain id never thought that. Have a great weekend buddy.
You too!!

Great tip!
Hey smithy I'm back! Nice little saw you got there!
Welcome back! we missed you!

I have a 240 also! I should get it out also!

I don't like snowballs!
Looks like poplar to me…. Any oil will work, that little 340 is getting er done! 👍👍👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🙏🙏🙏🙏
Yes it will
Please do a video of you porting this saw.
I can do that!

How does basswood burn?

Everything I saw said LP.

Skunk wood!!
@@Smittyschainsaws lmao 🤣 that's %100 accurate
Looked like a Canadian or Gray Poplar eh?
I am leaning towards poplar.

ok, so what got chewed on??? ( low profile chain )
This was standard chain and I should have gone with LP.
I don't think it's poplar Smitty. Hard to tell from the vid
I might cut into it!
