I've been using used motor oil for over 30 years in my saws and never had any issues with bar or chain wear because of it. Never had an oiler go out either. In the winter I've added used transmission fluid to thin down the oil without any issue. The one reason I've heard against using used oil that makes sense to me is that you are spreading used motor oil around the forest. I only cut about 10 cords of wood a year, so I don't think the amount of oil I'm spreading around the forest is significant and I choose to keep using it. I know a guy who uses used fry oil (filtered) as bar oil and swears by it. There are a lot of options out there to save money on bar oil that people around the world have used reliably. Some are probably better than others, but I love it when people are able to use what is available to them. Choose what your conscience will allow you to do based on your own experience. I just discovered your videos today and have loved watching them. As someone who spends a lot of time in the Colville National Forest, I love watching your experiences in similar conditions to what I face and I'm learning from what you do. I especially love watching the videos with your family; you have a great family and I love that you are teaching them to work hard and have fun. Keep passing on your experiences and what you love doing. It is fun to watch.
It's a strange argument that motor oil pollutes nature. In large amounts I agree, but seeing that oil comes from nature surely means it's ok putting it back. In Israel I heard that they used oil to fertilize the barren land when they settled back there.
Rural King has Bar Oil All season Hi-Tac $8.99 gallon Sometimes on sale for $5.99 or Tru-Flo Winter Version Less Tacky for $7.99 , Walmart Super tech use to be Cheap but it's like $15 gallon Now , I have ran used Engine Oil but ran it through Coffee Filters First and add some STP Oil Treatment to make it more Tacky so it will stay on the Bar Better
With the price of bar oil here in canada going through the roof i am definitely going to try out the used motor oil. Definitely going to be a game changer. Thanks David appreciate you sharing these tips.
I filter my used motor oil through an old T shirt. Been doing it that way for over 50 yrs with no problems with any bar or chain wear. In the old days they didn't make bar oil.
i generally only use my own used oil which is not dirty and black , just brown and i leave it in a gallon jug where any heavy stuff will settle to the bottom of the jug . if i thought it was a problem i could always filter it but ive never had a problem
You can get paint filters pretty cheap, or an old worn-thin t-shirt, after you've put it through the screen. And crank up the oiler volume to compensate for the throw off.
Boy you were sure organized on your bench when that you were talking about your Toyota truck and working on it that's an awesome saw working area hell to complete it all you need now is a good chainsaw grinder
It’s those microscopic pieces of metal that kill bar oil pumps, and they do cause some pretty good wear issues for the bar rails and chain. Regular bar oil also has special tackifiers that keeps it from slinging off from the tip so that it can lubricate the bottom of the bar wear most of the time the pressure comes from for typical use in your cutting. I’m sorry David, I’m gonna stick with my regular bar oil.
However technically correct. I worked with an old school logger (he was the company owner) for three years he and consequently all of us ran the used oil out of the skidders. No one ever had to replace an oiler and no one excessive wear on tips or bars. It’s to thin for me to run on long bars in the summer months but it’s no problem on the shorter one. I run pro select in the summer but that stuff is too thick for winter use. No problem running bar oil on everything all the time though. Where I’m at there is no do all, all season oil.
It works great ppl over think it and have this myth made up in their heads that it will damage saws lol I had one guy tell me he burnt up a bar and messed up the oiler using it one time haha yeah ok buddy 🙄
If you’re not comfortable with using 100% motor oil, maybe do 50/50 or 25/75 mix of bar/motor oil so there’s some tackifier in there. You’re still saving some money but getting more out of the bar oil. 🤷♂️
You as well buddy yeah it needs to cool down but I have a giant freezer I got from our local store it was a ice freezer for holding bagged ice and the only thing that was wrong with it was the door wouldn’t shut all the way but I just turned it shut
Thanks for another tid-bit of info. Does this recycled oil flow differently than what bar oil did? I mean does it cause the oil tank to empty earlier or last longer than regular bar oil? How do you get the used oil that you run through the screen. Do you get it from an auto shop, friends, etc.? Once more thank you.
Hey Buddy l got this same league l ride motorcycle and the oil is the best same with my truck and car.I used to recycle all of my oil.past years ldo the same thing you been doing.Save money and use some great economics .awesome ldea .The screen thing as well its like an old wampanog lndian trick .That's what I am bet you didn't know that brother TTYL Cliff
I use used motor oil off of my car before I change it I put a couple STP's in the crankcase and let it mix up good select gives you the tackiness and then I drain the oil and that's what I basically use in my chainsaws I'm not a commercial guy soul I don't use that much but gallon 2 gallons a year I have five cars to change oil on so that's no problem had no problems at all price is right money is money more for me
I only use about 2 gallons of oil a year and I get my oil for about $7-$9 a gallon. I always get it on sale. I just cut wood for myself. I can see where you are coming from that's a lot of oil that you use.
@@mountainlifewithdavidkelsie hey David, I've been running neotec 872 chainsaws I have two of them. They seem to run pretty good. I let my sons run them.
I don’t buddy I usually never filter it but the last few buckets had some sludge… the fine stuff don’t do much… some ppl over think it and act like it’s going threw a motor lol
Curious about your combo jugs, did you mod them with those short neck spouts with the screw caps? Never seen them before, look like they are perfect for the pour compared to the long yellow spouts most came with.
ive tried alot of (clean) everything for bar oil, except used motor oil... worst was cooking oil, worked fine, but cleaning the saws was insane. Leads me to believe dirty motor oil would be just as bad. Got alot of carbon in it. My cheap bar oil comes from tractor hyd oil combined with a tackifyer. I dont commonly change tractor hyd oil alot, but when i do its dozens of gallons, and its clean. The tackfyer aint cheap but one gallon will last for a hundred gallons easily. I figgerd it costs about .50 cents a gallon.
Appreciate all the tips, These days every dollar counts big time. Thank you!
Thank you friend for your support

Some places Like Natural Forests you have to use a Biodegradable Oil like Vegetable Oil

Used motor oil works for me too! I also use clean motor oil that’s mismatched weight that I find laying around.

Let’s say u had to replace the whole bar and oiler…. 200-250$? Still cheaper IMO it’s not for everyone and I totally respect that ✊🏽

Bar oil is cheap tractor supply on sale 5 dollar a gallon
@@tylercritelli587 not cheaper than free, though.
Maybe pump the used motor oil through your used oil filter. If it's good enough for engine timing chains, probably good enough for chain saw chains!
I strain my 15-40 skidder oil back in the jugs with paint filters after oil change and then mix it 50/50 with new bar and chain oil.
Just found your channel couple days ago, like everything about it!! Keep it coming! What do you sell a cord of wood for??
Here in Newfoundland, Canada we are not allowed to use used motor oil, however a lot of people do and as far as I know there are never any issues.
Wow that’s crazy and yeah ppl over exaggerate stuff they “heard”
you're not allowed only if they catch you haha ;)

Try used Transmission oil from people that work on Transmission.
I have a oil pump with a filter I pump the oil thru it and that’s what I been doing for 45 years
Not buying the high dallor crap

When I was a youngster dad would run used oil in the winter time. I'm wondering if he had to adjust the oiler summer and winter?
I’ve never touched the adjuster on my saws yet
My dad always used old motor oil but I haven't used it much but I'm thinking a lot about it. I spose a guy could filter it more if he wants.
Yes sir
It's the only kind of oil I've ever used.
A dollar saved equals 5 dollars by the time everything counted , if you know what I mean !
good tip
My thought. Is one more filter after that but just me. Be safe and be careful
Thanks buddy for all the support
Am gonna try it
