This is such a lovely film. Recently I left. Netflix, so tired of the violence, or unoriginal offerings, sword bearing nuns and super heroes without character (except for Thor, sigh). 90 percent or more of today’s films simply do not hold a candle, in my opinion to gems like this. Thank you so much for uploading them!!
Don't forget the reality shows and abusive sex movies like "365". Awful. I'll be quitting Netflix soon.

They make me feel closer to my mom who has been gone for 20 yrs now. I just wish she was here to watch them with me.
One of the things that holds interest is the actors. While some of the stories or construction of the movies may have some awkward moments, the actors managed to carry the picture. That was when you had dedicated professionals.
Rathbone projects and delivers his lines so beautifully. He shows elegance and genuine unaffected culture.
Honestly, I would have married him!

Love these fine old movies. Art deco is fantastic. The clothes were sooo pretty. Two of my favorite actors. They knew how to act back then without the dirty words they had real class back then. Constance was just gorgeous. Basel was first class in all of his acting. They were quite a couple in this movie.

Consider the men and women we call actors today. Hardly "Men" nor "Women". For Margaret Mitchell, Basil Rathbone was the original choice for Rhett Butler. She said she wrote the book specifically envisioning him as Rhett. - What an elegant, talented man. Most don't know that he was a renowned stage actor long before films. He played Romeo opposite Catherine Cornell' as Juliet. - He was also considered the finest swordsman in Hollywood.
He was ' a weak man' to his wives.... Read his biography on the internet. He worked very hard for his money, his wife was a spendthrift, loved partying! He blindly loved her. As an adult, moved from England to America to improve his acting career. His family are of a prominent American descent. Basil's own family lived in S. Africa, they moved to England when he was 3, they left due to financial problems. He had 3 children. Born: 1892 - 1967.
The actors of today are horrible, and disgusting.
He also served as a spy during world war I , he volunteered to dress up and go behind enemy lines because he considered it playing a necessary role! A wonderful man and actor!

They were no better nor worse than the actors today. The only difference is, they had handlers who paid to keep their business out of the news unless it served a purpose.
Basil Rathbone is the key reason I wanted to see this movie. I certainly wasn't disappointed.
May we never forget costumer, Edith Head - her brilliance and mastetful art is in my opinion unmatched.

Edith Head wasn't the costume designer for this film. Gwen Wakeling designed the costumes, and Eugene Joseff designed the costume jewelry.
I simply adore Basil Rathbone he was a wonderful actor and that voice!

At one time Constance Bennett was the highest paid female star. She was mainly known for her beauty and being the best dressed in films.
In her private life she was quite 'daring': one annulled teen marriage, having a child while not married, living with lovers, marrying a marquis that she 'stole' from Gloria Swanson, She had 5 marriages in total!
Constance died suddenly at age 60 and she is buried in Arlington Cemetery w her last husband.
Wow! Just realised that this is 93 years old! Still passes muster though. Love these old films. 😊

I read that he volunteered for particularly dangerous and raids so he could kill more Germans after his brother was KIA.
Not only was he a veteran he was awarded the Military Cross.The MC is granted in recognition of "an act or acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy on land". It ranks bellow the Victoria Cross and The Conspicuous Gallantry Cross.

You really have no idea of the games we women play to get the man we love. She was always in love with him but she couldn’t let him know. She needed to make him fall in love with her too . Love games. I played them too. Every man i have ever wanted I always got. And more marriage proposals than I could even tell u. I married my friend. We had a lot in common. And after 17 hrs we are still arguing and still together.

Somehow it seems women are supposed to bare a lot of skin when dressing up. Personally, I think they look much better in clothes that cover them up.
Constance Bennett is radiant, and letter perfect, as a gloomy Cindererella bringing very nuanced life, along with the ever urbane Basil Rathbone, to this excellent romantic fairy tale. I always love the 30s society ambiance, doubly so when it takes place in Paris and/or ocean liners.

She refuses the Prince in favour of the Beast {and not in a Beauty and the Beast way either where the Beast actually becomes a better person - He's still the piece of shit he started the movie as!}.

This is my second time watching this film I first saw it several months ago. The fashion alone is worth watching!
It is rather sad to see in retrospect how flippant many take the most important decision of ones life.
It could easily make a sinic out of the most gentle of Disney happily ever after dreamers.
Just once in my lifetime I hope to read about a true love story that beats all the odds and inspires the world to believe in the impossible..Actually marrying and being happy and content with no strings attached with God Himself in the center of the three strand cord that is not easily broken when it is understood what making a real vow is all about.
A promise for better and for worse..no matter what.
Yes, this is reality, in what you wrote. I believe in that Reality, and ' till death us do part'. No boredom every happens.

Wonderful Art Deco. Interesting that there's a shot of the Eastern Columbia building which is in Los Angeles, which had just opened when this movie was shot, when the movie is supposed to take place in New York City!! Basil Rathbone is amazing!
Kenneth MacKenna seems to have been a real star in the early 1930s. But, he had a 30 year period in which he didn't make movies. He resumed again in the early 1960s. Hollywood seemed to be preparing Basil Rathbone as a romantic leading man at the time, but his career trajectory changed by the mid-1930s.

Glad I'm not the only one to become so involved as to be very concerned about the dreadful choice of husband (or should that be choice of dreadful husband?). It's very touching that Mark Nostrant and Richard Holman have accorded deep respect for Basil Rathbone's military career. The family history is fascinating! As a South African, it's of particular interest to me that he was born in Johannesburg in 1892. His father was a mining engineer, subsequently accused of being a British spy in the Transvaal Boer Republic at the time of the Jameson Raid, a botched attempt by the Administrator of the British Cape Colony to gain control with the assistance of British immigrants involved in the gold mining industry. The Rathbone family would have hopped on a train to Cape Town, then boarded a lovely old passenger liner, not quite as luxurious as the one in the movie but which got them home to
resume a more orderly life in England all the same!

How wonderful to have lived in the 30s as a movie star
When a man loves you after he's seen you without make-up and says you're beautiful, in your flannels,with messed up hair, seen you angry for a stupid reason, is worried to death when he can't find you, wants to be with you all the time even if it's just to sit beside you and watch a silly very old movie, loves to see you laugh, values your mind and opinions, this is the man I loved. This is the love I knew. Very disappointed in the ending.

He was what you call a cultural minority. - Please note: prejudice comes in all colors and flavors. It isn't singularly anything blacks have suffered from. - Still, black Americans were married and raised wonderful generations of children, - nothing like the sad, illegitimate kids today. There was prejudice and poverty all around the country in "those days", but all Americans had a better America to live in.

The sets are gorgeous. Did ocean liners really have quarters like that back in the day?
That was one of my favorite parts, too. From books I've read about that time, they were very nice. Lalique ashtrays on the Normandie, for example. But it is thrilling to "see" one in a movie, even if it may be a set.
There were elegant oceanliners, not many, smaller sizes though. Also, the Train... Orient Express... was also beautiful. Still working.
Oh yes. They did, in the upper decks, for the richer passengers who could pay. Lower decks, less opulence, and then there was steerage, the cheapest and most miserable., but if the boat didn't sink you still got to your destination.
They did...but dimes and nickles were more common.

A surprisingly good movie. I expected scratchy video, but it was excellent quality. Interesting and good plot and it held my interest and moved along. Very good acting. If you like old movies, you will like this one.

But she had always been in love with Gaylord . Reggie is not even good looking. And creepy . He seems like the kind of man who would roofie a girls drink. Nah she made the right choice.

This is a fun flick! Constance and Basil have brilliant chemistry (and a surprise ending). All the acting is great. And seeing 1930 NTC and Paris are positively quaint. And the screenplay's whole precept is a hoot. (Be warned, this movie has 1930 sound issues, using stag mics, etc.) Thanks for posting. Take a look.
This is my second time watching this film. I love everything about it - the fashions, decor, acting and superb way people spoke without vulgarity. Constance and her sister Joan were topnotch actresses. Joan is excellent in "The Woman In The Window" and "Scarlet Street," both I highly recommend. Basil and Kenneth were equally impressive as well. The acting all-around was great. Thank you, PizzaFlix!

She was in love with her boss, dreamed of his attention, and the worst fate of all to have him want her only as a tool smashing her dreams of what she'd imagined being with him would be like, crushed she rose like a phoenix from the ashes and to her he was drawn, she'd have her fantasy come real. . . . and that's why she didn't pick Reggie! Oh, I so understand!
I understand why as well. I just wished they would have cast a better advisory for Basil. Her boss was such a wimp.He was miscast.
He's still not interested in her as a person - He only sees the expensive clothes and make-up!

Not a real marriage. Powerful message even for today. To sell your vision for your future for ease and comfort. It would not be easy and comfort at all because to not be right with oneself is never comfortable or easy. For the man to not understand that this was a horrible thing to say to her is also a sad thing that shows the sickness of selfishness. I haven't gotten through the movie yet but I certainly see that this could happen in so many ways and that it does happen to so many people even today. I hope there is a happy ending lol.

Some good art deco in this. You rarely saw it in ordinary homes in movies but it turned up in penthouses and expensive hotels.
I know that it is all part of the plot, but damn, are the guys in these movies dumb not to notice the nice girl right in front of them. :)
Such is life. The opposite holds true as well, ladies who don't see the perfectly nice, ordinary guy right in front of them, always being attracted to the more exciting bad boy type.

Love Constance Bennett and just adore and in love with Brasil Rathbone! He looks so much like David Nevine - both British export! I also love the look of Rita La Roy the lover of Kennet MacKenna character, gorgeous, sultry, seductive and what an eyes! Astonishingly beautiful dresses and accessories, look how slim those girls used to be - very elegant and classy, no vulgarity of implants! Every woman of the era tried to stay as slim and lean as possible, many taped their breast, because those "flat chest" boyish looking body looked very elegant! One of my favorite movies, watched so many times never get tired of it!

My grandfather E.B. Derr was the producer of this movie. He and Joe Kennedy came to the west coast to invest in the fledgling movie making business. (which I'm very grateful for, as I was born in Cali during a fun time ). BUT......
I really hate the title of this quaint little film. They thought a sexy title would draw more folks, I guess.
My grandfather had a "plot list " which was very simplistic! Pick one from column A one from column B and one from C .
Bingo, a movie !
Wish we had asked more questions about this time in his life, but he didn't like talking about it as he and Kennedy had a falling out . ....

That was funny that Reggie (Basil) had to ask the Stewart to find out what her name was. I liked her hair more at 40:15 plus she wasn't an ugly duckling n' she should of picked Basil Rathbone whose character was Really in love with her.

In these movies the actors had to actually memorize lines and such for 4-5 min a scene. Now-a-days "actors" need que cards for scenes that are 1-2 seconds a scene.
+PizzaFlix I'm always amazed at how many watch your posted films and don't click like/or dislike. However, I've come to the conclusion that most of your viewers (a) watch the film and move on; and (b) don't want to acknowledge 'like' because UA-cam will assume they know their tastes and will bombard them with things they (YT) assumes will be of their fancy; or (c) which I'm guilty of sometimes -- I just forget!!
Which brings me to my next point: I really appreciate the fact that you -- moreso than not -- provide a synopsis of the film - without giving an entire plot away (especially the ending!! grrrrrr). You allow me to decide whether or not I want to watch it or not - right off the bat.
Additionally, those who comment on your films (as well as you at times) give the backstory about actors, directors, the genre, producers, the period in which the film was made or shown. I like that. Some of the commenters either knew or are relatives of the actors -- how cool is that??? And I like that you draw intelligent, thoughtful commenters. I learn so much from so many of them. Yours and their love of the classics not only entertains, but educates me at the same time.
This is supposed to be a comment and not a book, but I just hadda' express how meaningful your uploads are to me (and probably many others). Not just nostagic, but educational and entertaining. If I see the same films posted by you and others -- I always click on yours because I know it'll have a feel of like minded people who engage in classics with thoughtful and knowledge filled comments.

A lot of people watch on their TV sets via Firestick or Roku etc. You can't rate or comment using those. I watch short videos on my computer, but I usually mark the longer movies for "watch later" and then watch them on my TV through my Firestick.

Basil Rathbone was 9th in line for the throne when 2 people mysteriously died who were in front of him making him 7th. He was run out of England and went to Broadway and then Hollywood. I have always liked his movies.

Everyone always raves about the clothing in these old movies, but, c'mon man, a tuxedo hasn't changed much in over one hundred years. I'm guessing they are loving the women's clothes? SPOILER ALERT: This is the MOST UN-Sherlock Holmes one will probably ever see Basil! LOL.
It’s also the fact that people are generally wearing nicer clothes all the time in these older movies. The 60’s ushered in t-shirt culture.
I was very disappointed with how it ended. It just felt wrong.
Basil Rathbone is the Sherlock Holmes in my mind.
