I first started enjoying Sherlock Holmes back in 1965. And I have to admit watching and reading Holmes actually awoke a determination in me at a young age to be hyper aware of my surroundings. It was fun to amaze friends by saying things like how many steps they had in their home leading into their basement. Especially having been in their basement only once months ago. 😊 It is amazing how much we can see and remember by paying just a little bit of attention. Extrapolation can confound people by just taking a little thought. 😁

I agree that Basil Rathbone was the ultimate Sherlock Holmes. He looks exactly as I had pictured Holmes when I read the stories as a child. I appreciate Jeremy Brett’s performance and the absolute dedication that production had to Conan Doyle’s stories. But even though some of these movie plots are a bit hokey I never tire of them. I like how Rathbone looks as Holmes. His profile and build are perfect and those languid eyes when he plays the violin. Which he really could and did play. His every gesture and glance is Holmes. Which Jeremy Brett, God love him, over acted at times, and got shrill. Holmes was never shrill. I also, like many others love Rathbone and Bruce together, they seem to have a natural affection for each other or are just great actors. Yes Nigel Bruce plays Watson as a bungler, which he never was in the stories, but some how it works and I love it. Benedict Cumberbatch is a good actor, but that series lost sight of the feel of Holmes, even though they actually stole some bits of their absurd plots from these movies. I have the complete set of these movies and watch them again every few years or so and never tire of them I too grew up watching them in the 60s with my Dad when I was a teenager and I still love them. I even got my daughter addicted to Sherlock Holmes, although to her Jeremy Brett is the ultimate Holmes.

Quite a lovely girl playing Sheila, also something of a rocket scientist: Marjorie Riordan was "discovered" in Wisconsin in the early 1940s and became a studio contract player at Warner Brothers. During the 1950s she and another Warner Brothers player, Joyce Reynolds, decided that they found acting intellectually unsatisfying and the two of them returned to graduate school to study speech pathology.
Riordan's focus in graduate school was the psycho-dynamics of stuttering which led her, in turn, to study clinical psychology. Throughout the late fifties and first couple of years of the sixties, she pursued both her careers as a clinical psychologist and as an actress, but then gave up acting altogether.
While in graduate school, she met her husband Allan Schlaff, who was also a clinical psychologist. The two had a son, John Schlaff, who was born in 1959.
Riordan succumbed to breast cancer in 1984.

Some people have incredibly colorful lives his was certainly one of them.

    Dear Feature Film,
This is by far the best Rathbone Holmes I have seen, better even than The Hound. Steady pacing, the sub plot of the jewels and the girl, the tension and stupefying twist at the end. You could have knocked me over with a feather at that final twist, as they might have said.
And Watson's singing! But Nigel Bruce was very much a part of showbiz in those days - they all had to be able to act, sing and dance. And the girl had a truly fabulous voice.

As for Robert Downey's Sherlock, it had nothing to do with Conan Doyle's stories. Basically a vulgar martial arts movie aimed at a Chinese audience. Out of all the moments from the history of Sherlock, nothing gets me like a compliment from Holmes to Watson. Especially in the Rathbone series. He's so short tempered and condescending to him any other time. Bossy. The few times he compliments him or makes it obvious he cares has stuck with me more than almost anything. Him saying the guy that helped saved Watson deserved the reward at the end of In the House of Fear is the best example. And then the compliment here where you get the little giggle from Watson.
Holmes can't stand near anyone. But he spends hours upon hours with Watson. You know he has to care,it's just really something when you see it. I've felt that way about many different Holmes and Watson duos honestly. I would say this is my least favorite Watson,if he wasn't so charming. He works so well playing off him,the stupidity comes off as endearing. And he has his moments where it's plain he's not a punk or an idiot either. This man is a wounded veteran and a doctor. I never understood why so many played him the way they did. This would be a highly educated man. He wouldn't have the deduction skills of Holmes, because they are unrealistic to begin with...but he wouldn't be an outright cartoon either.
I do enjoy when they get close to the books but make something a bit different. The Sherlock series and some of the games, the Jeremy Brett series, etc. They are such good characters they can be interpreted a number of ways and still be instantly recognizable. They've made him everything from a complete leech and a drug addict,to kinder than Sir Arthur could have ever wanted. And a lot of it is right there in the material. Just depends on the person who sees it.
I was happy to look through the comments and see other big fans. Especially when they are younger or older. I like seeing the ones that say they saw them when they were little, and the ones that said their grandparents just made them watch them or whatever else. Not only Holmes, but the actors and ACD himself are immortal. It's crazy when you think about it. He created a character (really I should say characters) that is still loved like 125 years later. There's not many people or companies that can say that besides Disney/Marvel...and even that's not as old. I always wonder what these creators would think. Conan Doyle and Tom Clancy are ones I wonder about all the time. I always hope they would be proud, but one has to wonder.

This Shakespearean actor was so brilliant in everything he did. I think Americans in particular love this series because it shows the world as it was, with its history, culture and a sense of right and wrong. @@richardhincemon9423 I love those lines; had to scroll back and listen to them again. Then as they head through the door, Watson mumbles, "....should've brought the cat....".
Another one that cracks me up is in "The Scarlet Claw", at 9:12, as they enter a hotel, and Watson mentions getting something to eat. Holmes asks rudely, "Don't you ever think of anything but your stomach?" To which Watson replies, without turning a hair, "No, not often." I watch these for the humor with Nigel Bruce more than for a serious Sherlock Holmes story!

This movie is special in many ways. But the two things I like best about it are:
    - It's surprising and unexpected ending; and,
    - The fact that the Firesign Theater in 1974 made an album called, "The Tale of the Giant Rat of Sumatra." Now, this title was taken directly from the movie wherein Dr. Watson relates a Sherlock Holmes adventure to guests at a dinner party.
In all these years, I never thought that the Firesign Theater album's title was taken from an actual Sherlock Holmes movie!

    • @itzakpoelzig330
      @itzakpoelzig330 Рік тому +2

Firesign Theater may have taken their album title from this movie, or they may have taken the phrase "giant rat of Sumatra" from the same place that this movie did: Arthur Conan Doyle.
The giant rat of Sumatra is mentioned in the Sherlock Holmes story 'The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire'. The story of the rat is not told, but other authors have taken that evocative phrase and made their own works on the subject, pastiches, etc.
It's unknown whether Doyle knew it or not, but there ARE giant rats in Sumatra. One species called the Large Sumatran Bamboo Rat can weight as much as 8.8 lbs, And in 2015 a fossil was found there of a rat estimated to have weighed about 11 lbs in life, or the size of a small dog.
