My grandmothers favourite actress. My grandmother died in 1944. I never got to meet her, I was born in 1960. For some reason Mary Astor has a special place in my heart because of my grandmother that I never got to meet. I loved her in Dodsworth, great movie.

Lilyan Tashman died just 2 years after this film at the young age of 37.
She started out as a young vaudevillian teen performer & a star at 17, she worked on the Broadway stage in the Ziegfeld follies for 2-3 seasons. Her happy last marriage was to actor Edmund Lowe who survived her.
I only recently found Ms Tashmans films on UA-cam & found her really an interesting actress.

Wow that's young and such a great scarlet woman here but not 100% hateable...I believed her when her face is in awe of them standing up to her bully husband who cheated on her dishing it out but couldn't take it. Her mistake was stalking just him and should've went on cruises to Europe or has a dance instructor like they did in so.manu films hehe. 37 way to young thanks for sharing.

Wow, Astor's expressions when he lied to her starting @42:39 was incredible acting. One could see and feel her disappointment that she knew the man she loved and trusted was lying. All actresses and wannabe actress should watch and study her movies. My only problem with this film was the constant music. To me it was distracting during dialog between the actors. I love classic movies, but this is the first I've seen whereas music was constant throughout and it annoyed me. Perhaps because Mary didn't need background music. The role she played didn't need to be enhanced!

What a great movie, I thought I'd seen all pf Mary Astor's films. If you read her life story it's heart breaking like this film without the happy ending. Torn apart in court and so much scandal in custody fight over her daughter I believe. "In 1936, Astor's career was nearly destroyed by scandal. She had an affair with playwright George S. Kaufman and was branded an adulterous wife by her former husband during a custody fight over their daughter. But you have to dig deeper because she kept a journal of her love affairs and yikes!!! Can you imagine it being blasted around the world. She had such depth. She lived til 1984 so good for her, so many things can you imagine? Thanks @PizzaFlix for a Supreme pre-code slice 🍕

Hearst was a married man messing around with Marion Davies. She broke it off years later though

A bit slow and predictable. Thank goodness for the female performances. An unsympathetic role for Tashman but she handles it with her usual style. In movies with more glamourous actresses, like Lilyan & Jean Harlow, makes Astor seem matronly. I begin to understand why Hollywood relegated such a fine actress down to second tier.

Puh-leez, Lilyan. What a hack. Myrna Loy masterfully portrays the seductrous in "Animal Kingdom," a PF pre-code gem. And, Lilyan, Jodhpur boots without socks?

Well there's no way to sell you on Tashman as a great actress if you were only interested in her footwear.
