Gloria Swanson!! I’ve only ever seen her in Sunset Boulevard. Her role was really the motor of this film. She really transcended the limitations of the medium. I really couldn’t take my eyes off her. She had an otherworldly quality that took each scene well beyond the limits of the writing and direction. She put the drama into dramatic. Wonderful work.

@BLAIR M Schirmer There is a name for it - age! I wonder how Marlene Monroe would look at around 60? Her last pictures at age 36 clearly showed lots of wrinkles around the eyes and general "heavy" feeling in the eyes and everything else associated with age! No one immune! Did you see pictures of old Elizabeth Taylor? You can also say "such a pity"! She was a great beauty! Or still with us Sofia Loren? She was smoking hot when she was young! Remember that number "Mambo Italiano" in "Scandal in Sorrento"?

This was Gloria Swanson's (1899 - 1983) first talkie film (a silent version was also produced for theatres which didn't yet have sound facilities installed) and she got her second Oscar nomination, the first being in 1928 and her third in 1951 for her famous role in Sunset Boulevard for which she did win the Golden Globe, She was hugely popular in the 1920s but her popularity waned in the 1930s and later and she turned to TV.

Gloria was nominated for an Oscar for both of these movies Robert Ames was married 4 times had 2 children. Was found died in a hotel room. He was trying to stop drinking. Was taking some medication to help him stop drinking. They believe that was the cause of his death. Such a good actor he was. So sad

David, there's SO MUCH wrong with People today, one wouldn't know where to begin.
We've abandoned Morality, Scruples, Respect, Family Values and Religion...
Yes Religion! Not so much for who believes in what God, or believes at all. The Bible, Torah, even Koran - were Stories of Faith - but also about Reason, and how to ACT in Society! How to treat others, how to respect Elders and People who have earned Respect. How to Learn and how to Teach.
Even besides that, an entire Generation of Latch Key kids in the late 60's through the 80's, were the worst parents in the History of Civilization!
      *Myself Included*
We had Laws changed to make our lives easier. We took power and authority out of Schools. And we stopped putting limits on our own children. Now they're raising kids.
*There ARE exceptions, just too few to make a difference.*
Who knows what the future holds..... I'm just glad I won't live long enough to see it.

What a wonderful yet sad movie. Thank you so much.
Feel free to delete this part if you wish, as my commentary is unnecessary.
The wonderful part was the unconditional love and sacrifice for our children. The sad part is that stuffed old shirts (money, power, and greed-driven people) don't watch movies like this in order to be able to learn how they are destroying peoples lives because of their inflated egos. After 90 years of this movie's debut, America still has a caste system: called the rich class/caste; the upper class/caste; the middle class/caste; and the lower class/caste. One day, hopefully soon, that will all end on this Earth because we will have evolved and no longer have the need for caste systems, money, power, war, and control. I hope I see those days before I die.

I would like to see that happen too, but I'm not optimistic. Do you think it might be in the nature of human beings to try to dominate and overpower others? I'm not sure that tendency can be wiped out of the human race. Maybe it can, somehow, but I tend to think it might be necessary to modify ourselves, I mean, change the characteristics of our own species, to get rid of that kind of behavior.

    • @RalphDratman
      @RalphDratman 5 років тому +2

@Eddie Turner I am thinking more about human self-modification. It seems possible that we might be able to change our DNA to decrease the tendency of people to be angry and destructive. Of course that sounds like a blueprint for tyranny -- turning people into contented cows -- but right now we are too aggressive and bellicose for our own good.

I much prefer this version to the remake with Bette Davis and Henry Fonda, surprisingly so since it's BD. Loved this ending. The father Merrick was quite obnoxious, good acting. Gloria Swanson was great and particularly touching with cute, little Jacky. Thanks for the upload.

Great movie . Thank you for uploading it. Many twists and turns. Great acting by all, especially Gloria Swanson. They don't tell you what happens to Jack's wife. I guess they want you to surmise that she died. A very happy ending otherwise.

Well, from a psychological point of view leaving the kid with his mum and parents, who love each other, is the best; as well as giving up a man, who doesn't love you, is also an honest thing to do.

As for the plot of this movie. One that displays the antique values and soul crushing social standards imposed on people in a world 91 years ago. “What will people think?” ruled people’s lives whether they were members of the lower classes or society elite. So much deception and shame suffered by people who failed to live up to what was called leading a respectable life. From the perspective of the 21st century and a new millennium we can look back at this kind of story and see how wrong it all was.

A lot of these movies from the 20s and 30s are just brutally tragic: they rip your guts out and toss 'em on the floor! I love them! Today's movies are complete pussies compared to films like "The Trespasser".

Edmund Goulding is well known for Grand Hotel. Attention to a very young William Holden, 19 years later he'd work again with Gloria Swanson on Sunset Boulevard.

Not the same Holden. William from Sunset Boulevard would have been 11 in 1929.

Just read in the comments this was the first "talkie" for Gloria Swanson. I haven't seen her in any other movies but I noticed that she had quite a presence on stage, a lot of physicality, the other actors seeming still and not as real. She spoke her lines like she really meant them. All the actors were good, the script very good, despite the story being so timeworn and and rather tawdry. The performances were so authentic that the story became one of values and how it shapes people, that humbleness and true love were more important than selfish interests. The women compromised and sacrificed for the greater good, they all acknowledged that nothing was finer than a son, and their love prevailed. Jack was so lovable and sweet, but not the core in him that was in the women. His father, representing the patriarchal and elitist rules of the wealthy, is the one who doesn't shine so brightly. !929, pre-code, so much better than after the Hayes code.

I also watched one of Ms. Swanson’s interviews in her 60’s or 70’s; she denied NADA! She will always be my heroine & my idol.😘💕🙋‍♀️

Although having heard of Gloria Swanson - I’d never seen her act in a movie. But the one thing I could not believe about this movie was that on more than one occasion I was tempted to delete it from my collection of movies I’d saved on UA-cam to watch later. And although finding very enjoyable the scene at 4:00 - 4:53, I felt the movie would not get much better than that scene. Boy was I wrong. As I sat and watched it - all thru it I was thinking to myself - I can’t believe I was about to delete and not watch this movie. A good one.

This was in the period when Swanson was a major star, big enough to make her own pictures (with financial help from Joe Kennedy, then part of the then-new RKO's executive team). UA released it. There was an extra player named William Holden; he ended doing OK as well.
