As the wife of a retired Family Doctor, this movie reminded me of the times my husband fought insurance companies and bureaucracies on behalf of his patients. Also, the times he missed school plays or recitals because he was holding a patient’s hand while delivering bad news or watching them pass. People don’t understand how much of their patients doctors carry with them, day after day, year after year. The secrets and fears they shared with him are with him even now. Most folks leave the office and don’t give it another thought until they return in the morning. Doctors don’t have that luxury. Their patients become part of them. Their lives are forever inextricably intertwined. Their pain, his pain. Their fears, his fears. Their secrets, his secrets. Even though he now suffers from dementia, I’ll make sure he watches this movie later today. I know it will bring him joy.
Hello Nancy I see happiness all around you, can I please share from it❤
May God bless you both. And thank you both. For your humanity 💙✌️🙏🕊️
I am sure his patients all rose up and called him blessed, for such a doctor is worth his weight in gold.
God bless you both.
He must have been a wonderful doctor, a rare to find. And, you are such an understanding wife. Its not easy to be the spouse of a good, sincere, caring doctor. You sure are one. My prayers for both of you.

I worked with a Family Physician for many years as a nurse. He was also my physician. I remember patients who were elderly or people who had no insurance bringing in skinned chickens and rabbits to pay on their bill. He always accepted it as payment.
Fabulous
This movie and it's messages about health care (and overly sterilized food) are even more relevant today than when it was made. Great movie.
EXACTLY
And hilariously Grants prediction came true. Doctors today ARE electronic. you go to your GP, they input your symptoms into a computer and the computer spits out what you may have and what tests you should be given
Say what you will about the credits of famous actresses. Margaret Hamilton earned hers with her portrayal of the witch in The Wizard of Oz, overshadowed of course by Judy Garland. However, Ms. Hamilton in this movie, professes the highest example of an entertainer that I have EVER witnessed in Hollywood's history!
She has, thru these many years, so underestimated, that she truly belongs among the greatest!!!
May she rest in peace as she has left an indelible mark in Hollywood!!!

Hello I see happiness all around you, can I please share from it ❤?
Cary Grant never disappoints
Exactly!
That’s true.
He is miscast in this film because few can see Cary Grant as a medical doctor and professor. He cannot act the part.
@@jean6872I don't totally agree with you. He is very good actor.
He was able to play whoever, whatever.I love him the best of actor.

He is perfect.
Such a wonderful movie and the writers of the script hit the nail on the head when talking of how doctors would devolve into electronic healers with no personal interest in the patient. 😢
They are that NOW 😬
I made a note of that electronic doctor comment! so poignant for our times!
My doctors are great. They face me and we have a conversation, they listen and never look at their watches. I think we had a couple of "better living through science!" generations, but that trend has definitely started to fade out, thank God.
@@carbine090909 My doctors are great too. Its just that for certain ones, my GP for instance, he sold his practice to a big corporation like so many doctors are being forced to do today because of all the paperwork both government and insurance. He is still excellent. Its GETTING to him that's the problem
You deal with staff who are not medically minded but corporate minded and never bear in mind they are dealing with sick people. They max out the appointments for profit so if you have an emergent need, you cannot get in. Case in point. I caught a breakthrough case of Covid last week. I have numerous preexisting conditions so I called my GP. The ignorant corporate staff member said 'if you have Covid they DO recommended you come in and be seen. The next available is January 23rd!' I said 'my good woman, one of TWO things will happen by then. I will either be better, or I will be dead!' She then said 'then we recommended you go to the emergency room.' I said 'so instead of spending fifteen dollars for a copay for my doctor, I can spend three hundred dollars in deductibles for the emergency room to get the exact same advice. Lovely.'
A very high moment in the film to me especially bc it’s what we are experiencing now, 2022, before & after. Are going to continue to repeating ourselves forever?
Mr Shunderson's story is whipped cream on this great story.
It is! Great way to put it.
Based on the German play by Curt Goetz, which was made into a movie in Germany (Doktor med. Hiob Prätorius, 1950). I didn't know until today that there was a film version with Cary Grant and only knew the German film version. I am very happy to be able to see this wonderful version now.
Didn't know this either.
A story that wouldn't ever come out of Hollywood now. Beautiful story of life being respected.
Cynical balderdash! Sure it could.
♥️🙏🏼
Also a story of all kinds of boundary and ethical issues between doctor and patient, lol

I love the scene where Dr. Praetorius (Noah) talks to that elderly sick lady who doesn't want to live any more. "So you'd rather lay around in a coffin all day, doing nothing?" 😄 Cary Grant was so funny!
En que minuto es la escena ?
Gary Grant wasn't funny. Script was written by someone you don't want to acknowledge. Someone who was funny. Grant only read his lines.
@@camouflageartist8897 You're clueless. Grant was known for having a quick wit and great comedic timing, so directors and producers frequently let him "enrich" the script with his ad libs. Stop blabbing ignorance.

This movie has been on my favorites list since the first time I saw it many years ago - it has Cary Grant who never gave a poor performance in his entire career and has a messagefor all to heed ..... Love thy fellow man
Watch “The Bishop’s Wife.” You’ll love it, especially this time of year.

He was so versatile and great in every genre - it's insane that he never won an Oscar.
There is a different message in this film. It is more about forgiving your neighbors, especially for Germans after WWII.
I can see yoiur message and will ADD it to my take
Ha very first character is the woman that plays the bad witch in the Wizard of Oz! What a great actress 😄👍
She was the housekeeper who stole from him in his story later...it explained her sneaky behavior. Great actress ...
Margaret Hamilton is her name. I was lucky enough to see her summer home one day day in Southport Maine, she lived near my mother in law.
I knew when I saw that first scene that we were in for a good movie!
It's very oddly directed. The characters act out of character.

Technology dominates today. No talent. No better stories to inspire all family members.
And oddly, it was not well received when it came out! I really think this is a fine movie!
Anything written by Joseph L. Mankiewicz is a pure delight. I can't believe I can watch this here free! All About Eve and A Letter to Three Wives are two similar films with sophisticated dialogue like in this gem. In any film written by Mankiewicz, a character will mention "Wilkes-Barre," an homage to the Pennsylvania city where he was born.
Actually this movie is based on a play by Curt Goetz and the play had a far better ending and also the Cary Grant movie has a very goog beginning, the one of Goetz is even better, in the Goetz version Praetorios and his wife die in a car accident (and yes, Curt Goetz can make even this funny in a nonoffensive way!), Too bad Grant did not another Goetz movie, one of his other plays "Hokuspokus" is even better.
Oh my gosh, I was leaving this comment to thank you for educating us about Mankiewicz. Then you mention Wilkes-Barre PA I was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre. There was a time in Wilkes-Barre’s history where it was wonderful to live there. I loved growing up in that old town. There were a lot of kind people. I have the sweetest memories of adults (strangers actually) being kind to me. When I was around five years old. I would get the bus at the corner where the firehouse was. And I remember there was this one man and he used to hold me up in his arms and we would watch out the window for the bus to come so I wouldn’t have to be outside cold all by myself. What a sweet man! My father wasn’t around & that man made me feel so special. It was loving and innocent and pure. It’s sad to think today that the same situation. they’d be so worried about the guy being a perv. Sadly you do need to be that way, so super careful, but I believe because of the way I am that there are still some good kind adults that love children and it’s natural for them to be loving and kind to kids in general.
Thank you so much for your post !
Hope you have a merry Christmas ! 🎄
Yes, didn't know about the " Wilkes-Barre connection. Thanks V
Thank you for indicating where I can find more of this man’s work!

Fine fun film. Finlay Currie as "Mr. Shunderson" plays a phenomenal part and his story at the end is told so flat and direct with only the slightest embellishment that it should have been given a best supporting actor Oscar award. His parting words to Hume Cronyn as Prof. Rodney Elwell are so well said with both the strangest bit of grace and humility that I just can't describe how magnificent Elwell's well deserved comeuppance was given.
Margaret Brainard Hamilton, who plays Miss Pickett here, was best known for her portrayal of the Wicked Witch of the West, and her Kansas counterpart Almira Gulch, in Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's film The Wizard of Oz (1939).

This is a favorite movie of mine. It's rare to see it. This is quite unique. Cary Grant plays a doctor who is frankly ahead of his day, practicing holistic medicine. Our American doctors have become even worse than they were back in this movie, with MacDonald's fast food medicine 15 minute in/out, impersonal HMO medicine. The profession has devolved. American medical profession is devoid of soul. Doctors gripe about being rushed and not making enough money. Nobody put a gun to their heads to force them into this line of work. They need to care about individuals, and they need to have heart and compassion. They also need to stop investing in Big Pharma on the side. Our physicians were complicit with Big Pharma and pushed opioids on their patients without shame. Bring back humanity to American medicine.
There still actually are physicians who care for rhe whole person and give them the time needed. I worked for one who spent one day each week in a very poor, rural community. He wasn't Christian, but he'd say that his pro bono cases out there were "AFJ," all for jesus. I discovered he made actual house calls one day in our city, for a fragile older lady with no social support system.
"Your a little man and now your even smaller than before " great movie line.... very good and unusual movie for its time.
What a remarkable movie! Perhaps the most obscure movie ever, and decades ahead of its time. No wonder it's been lost to cinematic history - the people of that day probably couldn't make heads or tales of it. I've never enountered a denser and more thoughtful script. Shunderson (Findlay Currie) delivers one of the best soliloquies to shut down The Bad Guy.
Hume Cronyn started with three great roles: as a murder mystery fan in Hitchcocks' SHADOW OF A DOUBT; the most evil prison guard boss in BRUTE FORCE (1947 vs. Burt Lancaster, a real battle of little evil man vs. Big Convict Burt), and this in PEOPLE WILL TALK. The COCOONs and BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED are great bookends for his life in film.

Dr Noah is the epitome of love for humanity.
An unusual, thoughtful film. Cary Grant is always a joy to watch, so good looking too. Noah's style of empathic medicine has rather been lost to us now, so the film is quite prophetic in that regard. Much of the film could be called light comedy, but it is quite philosophical too and would have seemed unusual in its day and thought-provoking.

Jeanne Craine was really good at playing characters in movies that dealt with socially taboo topics. Underrated actress. Interesting movie. Love Cary Grant!
What a fantastic movie indeed!! Carry Grant, debonair as ever, did a fantastic job together with the cast of great actors! Enjoy!!
Perhaps one of the characteristics of a great movie is whether it can still stand over time - which , for me , this movie represents such.
it seems a light comedy but has certain circumstances and dialogue which make it much more . For instance , I loved the part after the train wreck incident Deborah is crying - " ...I put all those candles on your cake and you're really only 9 years old" - very funny!!
Yet, the comment of Mr. Shaughnessy to the professor , who instigated the "trial " , ( You're a little man...} was priceless.... and touchingly loyal to Dr. Pretorius. Cary Grant and Jeanne Crain were great, as usual - in fact the whole cast did a great job to make this movie very entertaining. Thank you

What a beautiful film.....compassion.......something today's films seem to lack. Some people have a charisma, not many, but some have a light when they walk into a room, not necessarily looks but the sound of their voice, personality, a light within.
This film is highly unusual, and it is also highly prophetic about the medical profession. The play, the script, the direction, Cray Grant and others are exceptional. Nobody will ever be able to make a remake of it.
Most prophetic in the mention of automated or electronic doctoring ,with robotic surgery now in its infancy.

I 'm German and there is a movie the "Dr.med . Hiob Prätorius" which has the same plot! The leading part played by Curt Goetz who fled Germany and was working in Hollywood and after the war he returned to Germany with his wife Valerie von Martens.
When was that movie made???
@@catherinelw9365 The German movie was produced in 1950! It was a bit of a scandal in those times, even in Europe, mentioning "abortion" and unmarried mothers.
In the American movie they didn't mention it directly. Only when the nurse said"She knew what she was doing, she is old enough" and he got angry at her!
If you google "Dr.med . Hiob Prätorius," German movie, it is possible watching it on youtube, I suppose!
The opening titles for this film clearly indicate that the screenplay was written by the director, based on the stage play by Curt Goetz. So its a play adapted for film and the "System" at the time didn't care if different production companies from different countries did the same IP. In some ways, there's cultural artifacts which probably won't translate well directly. This is also why there were so many foreign films being "rebooted" in 1960s Hollywood.

Hello Julia I see happiness all around you, can I please share from it ❤?
Love this movie every time I see it. Got something else out of it this time. Nothing new under the sun. All doctors, et al, should have this perspective. It's not about business, but all about the patient and getting him/her well. Bravo!
Superb film. I've watched it a number of times. And I'll watch it a number of times again. Cary Grant is just great in this film as he is in every film.
An unusual, but great film. Empathy is what is lacking in modern medicine.
Seeing this for the first time (I am 66) it`s was good, better than 85% of what I see in the last few decades.
A fantastic film. Four stars and more!!!!!❤️🙌❤️
Thank you so very much for uploading this film. So witty, elegant and wise in every way - and still so very much current in every way. I longed for a film with Cary Grant, but I never heard about this one.
Hello Helena I see happiness all around you, can I please share from it ❤?
Fantastic production...so happy to stumble across this wonderful story, music, actors and screenplay after all these years. A great Christmas gift which I plan to give myself and view every year.
What has this movie to do with Christmas?
@@retroguy9494 gratitude
@@cyn2480 Gratitude? For what? To God for the birth of our Savior?
@@retroguy9494 for a roof over one’s head , ya know, the simple things...
@@cynthiaennis3107 Yes, I agree. We should all be grateful to God for a roof over our heads, clothes on our backs and food in our stomachs. But again, what has that to do with Christmas?
One of my favorite movies of Cary grants. He is such a wonderful actor in does such a great job.
Wow! What a great picture!
