It’s also great to mention Bernie Bonvoisin, who is still active! Our list focused on vocalists with almost exclusive dedication to metal, but there are many talents beyond it. Thanks for your comment!
Is Bach really metal? If so, I'd put Michael Sweet in the top 10. But Skid Row and his solo work are more like heavy rock bordering on metal. Like Stryper.
@@AlexK-ew1mo Skid Row is certainly heavier than hard rock. Sure, they have brilliant ballads, but their early heavy stuff is great. It's not Motley Cure or Cinderella.
My top ten, for the moment: 1. (Absolutely, first and foremost, hands down!) Ronnie James Dio 2. Rob Halford 3. Steve Grimmett 4. Bruce Dickinson 5. Blackie Lawless 6. Ian Gillan 7. Tony Martin 8. Klaus Meine 9. Lemmy 10. Dee Snider I struggled with Gillan's placement on a metal list, but he's one of my all-time favorite rock singers overall, and he and Deep Purple are such acknowledged influences on so many metal artists. (I also considered including Robert Plant on the same grounds.) And hey, Gillan was officially with Sabbath for a sec! Lemmy was a tough one for me, too. To be honest, I never objectively considered him a great singer, but his style was so unique, and perfect for Motorhead's stuff. I really wish I could bring myself to include Ozzy, for sentimental reasons (really, who doesn't love Ozzy?) and/or on a "lifetime achievement" basis, but I can't quite do it. But he, like Lemmy, does get full credit for uniqueness.
Really liked your list! Dio at number one is indisputable, right? I also get the hesitation with Gillan and Plant on a metal list, but as influences on the genre, they definitely fit. And about Lemmy, he really had that unique style that made a difference in Motörhead! Ozzy is tricky, I'm also torn between loving the legend and critiquing the vocals. Thanks for commenting!
Great additions! Ray Gillen and Tony Martin really brought something special to the hard rock and metal blend. And I totally agree about Chuck Billy, his voice in Testament is unforgettable. Thanks for commenting!
Here is my personal top 12 best vocalists of all times : 01. Klaus Meine (Scorpions) 02. Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden...) 03. Christian "Zouille" Augustin (Sortilège) 04. Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) 05. Rob Halford (Judas Priest...) 06. Ronnie James Dio (Dio, Rainbow...) 07. Ian Gillan (Deep Purple...) 08. Biff Byford (Saxon) 09. David Coverdale (Whitesnake) 10. Eric Adams (Manowar) 11. Michael Kiske (Helloween ...) 12. Joey Tempest (Europe) Honorables mentions : 13. Axl Rose (Guns N' Roses) 14. Bon Scott (AC/DC) 15. Paul Di'Anno (Iron Maiden...) 16. Tim "Ripper" Owens (Judas Priest, KK's Priest...) 17. Chuck Billy (Testament) 18. Sebastian Bach (Skid Row...) 19. Brian Johnson (AC/DC) 20. Myles Kennedy (Slash feat. M. K. & the Conspirators...) I know Scorpions or Led Zeppelin aren't heavy metal bands but they are influenced a lot of metal bands. I'm not fan of the voice of Ozzy Osbourne, Udo Dirksneinder and King Diamond... 🤘
Great personal list! You included some classic and influential vocalists, no doubt. Klaus Meine at #1 is an interesting choice, and I agree that even though Scorpions and Led Zeppelin aren’t purely metal, they had a big influence on the genre. And it makes sense why you’re not a fan of more "rough" voices like Ozzy’s and Udo’s.
A solid list with iconic names! Dio and Bruce Dickinson are almost unanimous choices, and it's interesting to see Michael Kiske and Kai Hansen near the top as well. Eric Adams often doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Thanks for the comment!
David Coverdale, Geoff Tate, Dave Meniketti, Paul Shortino, Kevin DuBrow, Biff Byford, Rhett Forrester, James Rivera, Ralf Scheepers, Bon Scott...and many more...
Excellent! I fully support it. And special thanks for KD (it's a pity that they started to forget about him, and that's bad!). Well, Araya is wonderful too.
Glad you liked the list! King Diamond is really one of a kind, can't forget his style. And Araya too, his stage presence is amazing. Thanks for commenting!
My List: Ronnie James Dio Bruce Dickinson Eric Adams Tim Owens Dave Mustaine King Diamond Ozzy Osbourne Blackie Lawless Johnny Gioeli Rob Halford Honorify Positions: Robert Plant Ian Gillan Glenn Hughes David Coverdale Vintersorg Michael Kiske Chuck Schuldiner
Powerful list! Dio, Dickinson, and Adams at the top is a strong combo. And in the honorary positions, Plant and Gillan definitely left their mark, even though they are more tied to other styles. Interesting to see Mustaine and Gioeli on your list, that's a lot of versatility. Thanks for commenting!
Great list! Ian Gillan and Bon Scott are classics, Coverdale and Plant have amazing voices. But the list focused more on singers who dedicated themselves more exclusively to metal, so we left these giants out. Thanks for commenting!
Great list! You've included iconic voices like Dio and Eric Adams, along with Lita Ford and Doro, who are powerful female figures in metal. Bon Scott and Brian Johnson also represent rock well.
Klaus Meine is indeed an amazing and iconic vocalist with his unmistakable voice! He didn’t make it into the top 10 of this list, but I get your point. If you were to add him, who would you take out of the list?
Interesting list! I know it's all subjective, but here's who I would take out of this list and put in instead. Out: Tom Araya, Tim Owens, James Hetfield, Kai Hansen (and my hot take) Udo. In: Russell Allen, Warrel Dane, Phil Anselmo, James LaBrie and Floor Jansen.
Great perspective! Valid swaps for sure. Russell Allen, Warrel Dane, Phil Anselmo, James LaBrie, and Floor Jansen are fantastic vocalists deserving of recognition.
Dio was just gifted. Awesome vocals, distortion, control.. and healthy style. He's my personal #1. Dickinson deserves to be up there too. His power is just incredible. Running around the stage like a madman and keeping that sound up is a lot harder than he makes it look.
1- Michael Kiske (Helloween) 2- Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) 3- R.James Dio (Rainbow / Black Sabbath) 4- Ian Gillan (Deep Purple/ Black Sabbath) 5- Steve Perry (Journey) 6- Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin) 7- André Mattos (Angra/Shaman) 8- Klaus Meine (Scorpions) 9- James Hetfield (Metallica) 10- Blackie Lawless (WASP)

Missing many names, but surprisingly (because it's YT) I think it's a decent list. Not sure about Hetfield or Araya (I love Slayer, don't get me wrong), but the rest of the list is quite good.
I agree, some names will always be missing in lists like this. Hetfield and Araya are controversial for some, but they earned their spot because of their impact. Overall, I think it's quite balanced. Thanks for commenting!
@"best frontman" is not equal "best vocalist". I agree that Udo Dirkschneider is one of the best frontmans (maybe the best) and very good vocalist. Не can be nominated as the best frontman but objectively he was not the best vocalist (sorry). One of the best vocalists with his original style but not the best (as for me).

Haha, dude, I loved your list, but confusing Kevin DuBrow with Kevin De Bruyne was epic! 😂 Dio at number one is a classic, hard to argue with. Thanks for commenting!
@moderndayheretic No, I am sorry but Bruce Dickinson doesn't have the vocal extension of Rob Halford. You can prefer Bruce but Halford is undeniably the best vocalist
@@69lucyfer Bruce objectively has a more powerful voice. Not even debatable. It’s more operatic and full. Halfords is tight and thin in comparison. Halford just screams more and uses more falsetto, thats literally the only reason his fans rank him so high. Bruce also has way more stamina and control and better diction, better singer overall just in general. Just not as good of a screamer and doesn’t sing in as high pitched a voice.
@@moderndayheretic No, I used to be an opera singer and a vocal couch and always loved metal and I can confirm that Halford is not screaming at all. Halford's voice is absolutely superior to Bruce Dickinson.
@ if you were actually an opera singer you’d acknowledge the objective fact that Bruce has a more operatic and powerful voice than Halford (even if you want to still claim Halford is better in other ways) but setting that aside, my comment keeps getting deleted when I post a link, so look up “ask a real musician: metal singers” it’s an article written by an opera singer/coach and she had higher praise of Dickinson than Halford, despite her listening to Dreamer Deceiver (Halford’s best vocal performance ever) and Number of the beast (not even a top 10 performance from Bruce) so that really tells you something. And yes obviously Halford can do more than just scream, my point was the only way he’s better than Bruce is in terms of screaming and falsetto singing. Bruce is better in every other way. Control, stamina, etc. Try listening to the isolated vocal track for Where Eagles Dare and try telling me one song where Halford is that operatic or powerful sounding. I’ll wait.
Remembering musicians who have passed away is important and should always be respected. Warrel Dane, the vocalist of bands like Sanctuary and Nevermore, is an example of a great artist who has sadly left us. Thanks for commenting!
Good to see Michael Kiske on the list. Also Klaus Meine seems to be missing. My top 5. Ronnie James Dio Bruce Dickinson Rob Halford Michael Kiske Klaus Meine
Nice to see Kiske in your top 5! About Klaus Meine, I think he is more associated with hard rock. If this was a rock list, he would definitely be in the top 5. Thanks for commenting!
@@BackingTrackCenter Scorpions seem to straddle the line between hard rock and heavy metal. I always think of them as a heavy metal band, but that’s me.

Tony Martin is a great addition! He’s truly underrated and made a significant impact with Black Sabbath. Dio, as you mentioned, is the absolute number 1 for many. His voice is truly divine. Thanks for commenting!
Ralf Scheepers is an amazing vocalist and definitely deserves recognition! He has a powerful and technical style that many metal fans admire. Who else do you think should be on the list? Thanks for commenting!
Rob Halford at the top is a choice many metal fans approve of! 🤘 He really is the Metal God, and the list is packed with legendary voices. Thanks for the support!
Tate is fantastic and brought such a unique vibe to metal. The list wouldn’t be complete without him, though ranking is always tricky. Thanks for commenting!
What are we considering? Technic, power and style? The choice is completely wrong. This is the correct one: Matos - Lione - Tarja (ex-equo), then Kiske, Dickinson, Sebastian Bach, Soto, Axel Rose, Coverdale, Dio, Ozzy,
Each of these singers really brings something unique, and the choice can vary greatly depending on the criteria used. Matos, Lione and Tarja are fantastic names, without a doubt, and could easily be on another version of this list. Thanks for commenting!
The idea of this "the best vocalist" is wrong. It's difficult to compare Blackie Lawless., R.J.Dio and Udo Dirkschneider (for example. Everybody may add many others great vocalists.). Everybody of them is the best but in different context. I think it's more correct simply to hear them w/o comparision.

It’s also great to mention Bernie Bonvoisin, who is still active! Our list focused on vocalists with almost exclusive dedication to metal, but there are many talents beyond it. Thanks for your comment!
Biff is always overlooked!
@@jor-el1298 Slave To The Grind is definitely heavy metal.
My top ten, for the moment:
1. (Absolutely, first and foremost, hands down!) Ronnie James Dio
2. Rob Halford
3. Steve Grimmett
4. Bruce Dickinson
5. Blackie Lawless
6. Ian Gillan
7. Tony Martin
8. Klaus Meine
9. Lemmy
10. Dee Snider
I struggled with Gillan's placement on a metal list, but he's one of my all-time favorite rock singers overall, and he and Deep Purple are such acknowledged influences on so many metal artists.
Two extra singers from the borderline of hard rock and metal: Ray Gillen and Tony Martin. Chuck Billy from Testament also has a very memorable voice.
Great additions! Ray Gillen and Tony Martin really brought something special to the hard rock and metal blend. And I totally agree about Chuck Billy, his voice in Testament is unforgettable. Thanks for commenting!

I know Scorpions or Led Zeppelin aren't heavy metal bands but they are influenced a lot of metal bands.
Bruce Dickinson, Klause Meine(Scorpions), Rob Halford, Ozzy Osbourne, Brian Johnson, and Tim" The Ripper Owen" are my favorites.
Great choices!
Im a die hard maiden fan since 1981 but nobody will ever come close to ronnie james dio RIP.
Dio best ever rock voice
I agree, Ronnie James Dio truly left an unmatched legacy. His voice and stage presence are unparalleled. 🤘
@@BackingTrackCenterAnd his personality, by all accounts.
Удо Диркшнайдер был и остаётся для меня лучшим вокалистом металла . Его голос как напильник сдирает кожу до самого сердца
Удо, без сомнений, обладает уникальным голосом, который оставил след в металле!
This is literally the best list of the best metal singers I've ever seen
I'm really glad you liked the list! It's always great to see opinions that align with ours. Who are your favorite vocalists from this list? 🤘
@@BackingTrackCenter Well Halford for me is always the number 1
Hansi Kürsch!!
Phil Anselmo
Hansi Kürsch and Phil Anselmo are excellent additions! Both have a significant impact on metal. Thanks for mentioning these talents!
Hansi is a good reminder! Thanks...
R J Dio for me is number one.
I agree, Ronnie James Dio is a true metal icon! His powerful voice and unforgettable performances really put him at the top of the list for many fans.
My top 3:
1Dickinson
2Dio
3Eric Adams
🤘
1. Dio
2. Michael Kiske
4. Kai Hansen
4. Bruce Dickinson
5. Eric Adams
A solid list with iconic names! Dio and Bruce Dickinson are almost unanimous choices, and it's interesting to see Michael Kiske and Kai Hansen near the top as well. Eric Adams often doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Thanks for the comment!
Dio-лучший. Как его нам не хватает.
Абсолютно согласен, Дио был уникальным и незаменимым. Очень не хватает его голоса и энергетики.
David Coverdale, Geoff Tate, Dave Meniketti, Paul Shortino, Kevin DuBrow, Biff Byford, Rhett Forrester, James Rivera, Ralf Scheepers, Bon Scott...and many more...
Great list! These vocalists truly have a significant impact on metal. Each of them brought something unique to the scene.
Can't argue with #1 Rob Halford is awesome.
I totally agree, Rob Halford is awesome! His impact on metal is undeniable. Thanks for commenting!
Bruce Dickinson, Dio, Kiske, Joe Lynn Turner, Tony Martin and many others are way better than Halford
I suggest also Byff Byfford,my friend 😊
Great suggestion! Biff Byford is an iconic heavy metal vocalist and deserves recognition. We’ll consider him for future lists. Thanks for commenting!
My List:
Ronnie James Dio
Bruce Dickinson
Eric Adams

King Diamond
Ozzy Osbourne
Blackie Lawless
Johnny Gioeli
Rob Halford
Honorify Positions:
Robert Plant
Ian Gillan
Glenn Hughes
David Coverdale
Vintersorg
Michael Kiske
Chuck Schuldiner
Powerful list! Dio, Dickinson, and Adams at the top is a strong combo. And in the honorary positions, Plant and Gillan definitely left their mark, even though they are more tied to other styles. Interesting to see Mustaine and Gioeli on your list, that's a lot of versatility. Thanks for commenting!

Robert Plant bien sûr ... et de loin.
Bruce, the first ❤
Absolutely! 💯
Ian Gillian, Robert Plant, Bon Scott, Coverdale, ….

My top:
1 Dio
2 Eric Adams
3 Udo
4 Bon Scott
5 Brian Johnson
6 Dan McCafferty
7 Ozzy
8 Lemmy
9 Doro
10 Lita Ford
Great list! You've included iconic voices like Dio and Eric Adams, along with Lita Ford and Doro, who are powerful female figures in metal. Bon Scott and Brian Johnson also represent rock well.
Biff Byford, Bon Scott, Brian Johnson, David Wayne, Jon Oliva, Blackie Lawless, James Rivera, Ralf Scheepers

RJD forever!!! 🔥🤘🔥
Rip master, we will remember. 🙏
WHERE IS KLAUS MEINE OF SCORPIONS?? At least he deserves to be in the top 10!!
My all time fave is Dio! ❤
Dio was just gifted. Awesome vocals, distortion, control.. and healthy style. He's my personal #1.
Dickinson deserves to be up there too. His power is just incredible. Running around the stage like a madman and keeping that sound up is a lot harder than he makes it look.
1- Michael Kiske (Helloween)
2- Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden)
3- R.James Dio (Rainbow / Black Sabbath)
4- Ian Gillan (Deep Purple/ Black Sabbath)
5- Steve Perry (Journey)
6- Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin)
7- André Mattos (Angra/Shaman)
8- Klaus Meine (Scorpions)
9- James Hetfield (Metallica)
10- Blackie Lawless (WASP)

Eric Adams deserves WAY more from this list, I would refer y'all to Manowar's 1st two albums to hear what this guy can really do- Gates of Valhalla and Bridge of Death are nothing short of incredible, dude belongs in a "best ever" debate honestly
For sure, Eric Adams has an insane voice and deserves way more recognition! Manowar's first albums are a masterclass to understand his vocal power. Thanks for commenting!
Rob Halford Judas Priest Number One the second Bruce Dickinson Iron Maiden the best frontman........
Can’t argue, they’re absolute legends!
Dio maravilhoso faz muita falta 😢
Missing many names, but surprisingly (because it's YT) I think it's a decent list. Not sure about Hetfield or Araya (I love Slayer, don't get me wrong), but the rest of the list is quite good.
I agree, some names will always be missing in lists like this. Hetfield and Araya are controversial for some, but they earned their spot because of their impact. Overall, I think it's quite balanced. Thanks for commenting!
Udo Dirkschneider for sure ! 80´s best frontman to see him live in 80´s !
For sure! Udo Dirkschneider was one of the best frontmen of the '80s, seeing him live back then must have been amazing.

1.Rob Halford, the one and only metal god
2.Ronnie James Dio 🤘
3.Geoff Tate, unique
No Dickinson? Seriously? He has a more powerful and full voice than Halford.
I’ll wait.
What is wrong with memory off those who have passed? Does anyone remember a guy named Warrel...?
Remembering musicians who have passed away is important and should always be respected. Warrel Dane, the vocalist of bands like Sanctuary and Nevermore, is an example of a great artist who has sadly left us. Thanks for commenting!

Ронни Джеймс Дио - настоящая икона и мастер вокала. Его талант не имеет себе равных и является примером для многих. Спасибо за комментарий!
Blackie Lawless. C'mon!
Blackie Lawless is definitely a legend!
I agree with 1 through 5 but you need to add Sebastian Bach and Jack Russel just to mention a couple
