    Rest in peace, Alan Myers. Josh Freese, the drummer in this video, says that Alan was his motivation to learn the drums. How appropriate he ended up behind the Devo kit. I saw both in concert with Devo, Alan in '81 and Josh thirty years later. Two very different but incredible stick men, and both Spudboys to the core.

    I was here! Devo wasn't on the bill and I saw what I thought was just really rabid devo fans walking around in devo outfits only to find out that it was actually Devo!!!!! Fucking lucky to be me!

    I saw this Lollapalooza tour, back when it was an actual national tour. I was blown away by Devo - I already loved them but they secured my DEVOtion during their performance.

      monkeyboy4746 it was lollapalooza in the mid 90s. Of course it's gonna have a more grungy sound

      This is the way it was intended. They released a couple of indie singles before the album was released. The singles were guitar driven and rocked. Eno produced the 1st album and changed the songs from being guitar driven to synth driven. He really watered their sound down. This is the way the song was originally (actually it had even less synth). The original version of Jocko Homo rips.

    • @Uglatto
      @Uglatto 6 років тому +8

      not true, most of Eno's contributions to Q:?A:! were removed from the final mix by Devo. The only tracks where his production was left in tact were on "Space Junk" and "Shrivel Up", plus some backing vocals on Uncontrollable Urge. What you're referring to is Ken Scott's awful production on Duty Now, which absolutely castrated songs like this and most egregiously, gave us the completely toothless version of "smart patrol" that ended up on the record. Jerry can't stand to listen to the album to this day for that reason, as well as the inclusion of solo tracks written my Mark that approached the esoteric as he and Ken started working alone, such as "S.I.B"

      @@Uglatto it's Gerry btw and your absolutely correct about Eno's keyboards being removed and most of his vocals I saw an interview with Mark where he said when they were mixing Mark would wait for Eno to look away and he would slide his sliders down on the board without him seeing hahaha

    I’m sure some of you have had this same experience…you go to a DEVO show and there are two factions, spuds and ninnies/twits. The ninnies/twits have heard whip it and have no idea what’s about to happen or how heavy DEVO can be. By the end of the show they’re converted into spuds. Perhaps some of you were at one of these DEVO conversion camps and that’s how you were saved!

    The beat is just isn't the same without Alan on drums. Saw DEVO live way back when, and they were the tightest! Alan could keep a beat like a machine. This live performance kept slightly speeding up and slowing down. Don't get me wrong, it's still DEVO, but it doesn't quite *feel* like true DEVO without that exact back beat.

    Sometimes I think this song is derogatory, but at other times I think it is complementary. I guess that is how art is. Is he trashing the blockhead or praising him? Is DEVO the blockhead, or are non-critical thinking people the blockhead? He also mentions L7 at the end.
