Most people don't realize that DEVO were always a guitar band at their core. The Bob's (RIP Bob Casale) were creative and skilled players. Add Gerald (excellent bassist) and, Mark as the primary (fantastic) composers and, secret weapon Alan Myers - a formidable and, terribly underrated drumming genius - and, you have something mighty special (check out some isolated tracks...mind-blowing)
well said. That early stuff rocked hard.
@@brendantully8006 their first 3 albums were the best for me but I have to say that their 2010 album “Something For Everybody” was some of the best work they’ve done since the early 80’s ! 👍🏻
@@MrManfly Ah, so it's not just me. I thought TOTAL DEVO and SMOOTH NOODLE MAPS were "just okay" and I felt the same way on my first listen of SFE when I got up to about 4 or 5 tracks in. Then I listened to it from the beginning and all the way through a few days later and it got *really good* - I mean, up there with the best - from "Cameo" onward. Devo should have been getting, I dunno, maybe U2 levels of attention for SFE.
Solo on smart patrol, fantastic, my fav guitar solo 🎸
I get some pretty close tones using either my positive grid spark amp or my boss katana. Then I used either my Strat or my tele using an overdrive pedal with already a pretty overdriven amp sound.
I guess it's a trade secret; Devo is known to be secretive about many things. But Bob 1 is more talkative here than usual, you can tell that he's talking about his passion since he agreed to do an interview. Between him and Mark (who hoards synths and other odds and ends by the truckload) and Jim (who worked for Roland and built Devo's synth drums in the 70s), the Mothersbaughs have quite the gear obsession. They shove the poles in the holes.
Hee mayde aye faurt, butt eet cumes owt ov thee dock's but
Rock In Peace Bob Casale
Devo is criminally underrated as a band.
Why are every band on UA-cam considered as underrated?
@@gogoyubari366 You mean like Metallica,Arrowsmith,Led Zeppelin, U2 ? Seriously, I believe this accurately applies to Devo as many dismiss them as a novelty though the are very good musicians.
Devo is NOT underrated. They were revered before "revered" was cool. Ask David Bowie '78! Wahi' Valleys
I thought Devo was a novelty band for years until I read about the part they played in pioneering the punk and new wave scene. I reckon they were more misunderstood than underrated and they are certainly not underrated. And I didnt get Whip It until years later. Im a firm fan now and for me Devo has a place amongst the giants of music.
i dont think they’re criminally underrated, but they’re certainly not recognized enough in my opinion
Being a member of Devo, I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic in explaining the popularity of the Les Paul!
Bob Mothersbaugh is criminally underrated as a guitarist.
+devolve42 Devo=underrated in general. It's a crime against humanity that they're considered a 1 hit wonder. The SPUDOCASTER!!! :)
So very true
+Zenjedi99v2 only considered that by non-music people or the clueless.
Daniel Simon
Ineede-eh.
Anyone that isn't well versed in their first three albums should be considered musically illiterate; . I would consider Whip It to be one of their worst songs. Pity thats the one so many people know them by.
I had the pleasure of meeting Mark at a music store (won't mention the name) in Rochester NY and talked for 10 mins he was down to earth we talked about guitars and he signed one of my strats that i will cherish forever been a DEVO fan since the early 80s criminally underrated band and way way ahead of thier time RIP Bob2.
See, these guys aren't weird after all. Just a couple of good ol' spuds! Thank you for the music, Bob 2.
Rip Bob 2
So many players use a Tube Screamer, has to be the most popular guitar pedal on the planet.
“It’s my Mr DNA guitar. “
Interviewer: So what songs do you use this on?
:)
I know...cringe.
@@TheChristafershawn Either wasn't paying attention or didn't know "Mr. DNA" was a song. In any case - yes, cringe.
@@hubbsllc Yeah...I'm betting the latter.
I love the way the Bob's played together, two of my fave guitarists of all time
Bob Casale was a close friend of mine.... So sad he's gone..
I had the great pleasure of meeting three members of Devo at a bar after their show. Bob Casale was so nice, so down to earth approachable, we wound up carrying on a conversation about his recording work at the studio. He was just such a joy to talk too. I practically embarrassed myself approaching Bob Mothersbaugh (who had a beautiful lady chatting him up almost exclusively the whole time I was there). Mark, being the wild man you imagine he could be, was drunk and entertaining a big crowd of smitten fans. He was hilarious and a bit obnoxious at times. His brother Bob was just quietly sitting at the bar chatting with the lady. Two brothers, polar opposite behavior. I will probably never get to meet them again, and I'm so saddened by Bob Casale's death. He was easily the nicest famous musician I have ever met.
Cool to hear, thanks!
Great to see Bob 2 again. He was a solid, cool, very friendly, down to earth dude with a bent for culinary arts.
I was at this show when I was a wee lad. Lifelong fan of DEVO, amazing show.
Cute guys. Hard to believe my heroes have become eccentric old geezers. Man, you rocked my world when I was just a high schooler in the early 80's. Thank you for what you have done. Jason! Not knowing Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA was a bit of a gaffe, but they took it well.
Yep me also but I came out of senior high in 79.so I,m a good old timer of devo, talking heads, erithmics,
We're probably eccentric old geezers ourselves.
Amazing that Bob 2 uses only "two sounds," yet did incredible engineering work. It's a lot like the high end auto mechanic that spends all day optimizing everybody else's ride, then goes home in a Buick. He was a good guy; so unlike his brother.
I love how they are messing with the host. Can't blame them.
Rest in Peace To Bob 2 Robert Casale Rhythm Guitar Keyboards
I’m so happy that I’m seeing this interview now! Often in the old (and new) Devo interviews it’s mostly Mark and Gerry who’re Talking the most, either because of them being the co-starters or because of other personal reasons of which I am uncertain of, so it feels nice to hear both the Bobs talk a bit more :]. I find it very charming how similar they look/sound to their brothers!!
Good Bye Bob. You will be missed.
Love this, you dont often hear from the other guys in DEVO.
Its always Mark and Jerry out front.
These guys are as hilarious and weird as Mark in a few ways.
Bob 2 RIP
Jason doesn't know any of DEVO's songs, so 'it's the Mr. DNA guitar' was meaningless to him.
But he gave em plenty of slack I'd say.. so.. but man those bob's were so chill
8 years ago 😂😆
But WE know, eh, 👍
@@joejam3250 chill is right! I got to meet them one night after a show. I commented about how Bob 1 broke a few strings during Mr. DNA. His response: "Gee, ONLY SIX!"
Haha. The interviewer should’ve done his homework
Thanks guys, that was cool.
I love seeing the diversity of these setups and all the interesting personalities. Rock on.
I love all these reaaallllyyy cool people ripping on one of the most successful guitarist/musician/composers in music in the last thirty years, as if he's just some goofball. dimfucks.
He's been with the world
He's tired of the soup du jour.
The most surreal rig rundown ever.
Maybe you should look up Soundgarden's cover of "Girl U Want" or how about Nirvana's cover of "Turnaround" or Rage Against The Machine's version of "Beautiful World". No one cares? Really?
Devo are monsters of rock! I ve seen them live. What a great band! I wish they would do more industrial style rock like too much paranoias, jocko homo, ect
Should had asked if they still have that wine red Les Paul Custom with the reverse cutaway horn. I think it was in the musicvideo for Whip It.
rip bob 2
RIP Bob Casale. You can tell the Devo guys must have fun, which is the only reason to play music!
Excellent video. Fascinating, although Bob 1 was a bit secretive, it was still enjoyable to see their set-up. Thank you-very well done.
I feel like he is screwing around a bit here.
RIP
Bob 1 is perfect and I will fight to the death to defend his honor.
I love that Bob 1 sounds like his father.
wagg He really does!
that les paul's a beauty, love bloomfield!
Bob 1 is awesome. Stop hating.
Praise Bob!
Bob1 prefers to use the Line 6 PODfx. But since they're discontinued and he's down to one left, he resorts to the Fractal live.
Vote DEVO in the Class of 2021
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and
Thanks for your help you Spuds
Potatocaster?
Bob1 was played by Fred Armisen. Bob 2 was played by Al Gore.
Nice looking LP. Bob 1.
any chance doing a Wes Boarland run down?
RIP Bob2
Awesome.
wut s led paull?
Haha, bunch of crybaby haters in these comments. Don't be mad because Devo can sell more tickets with less ability than you (supposedly) have. Songwriting trumps skill every time. And if you don't care about their presets then why complain about them not sharing?
Weird, I thought Bob 1 would sound more like his singing voice, like on Smart Patrol and stuff.
Anyway, awesome video. Great for an aspiring guitarist and massive Devo fan such as myself.
Bloomfield Les Pauls are amazing. Expensive as hell
the AxeFX is absolutely the best.
Bob1 sounds almost exactly like David Lynch.
we love DEVO bob l & DEVO bob ll
I never realized that Fred Armisen was the guitarist for Devo.
hes actually their drummer occasionally
Great great great... gotta get me an AxeFX man...
Blondie and Devo on the same bill WOW
RIP Bob Casale
I agree 100%
love these guys but the les Paul never really went out of style. Its true that it was less prevalent in the 90s but it made a huge comeback in the later 90s.. aaaand regarding Jason S ,wouldnt u want to know a little about Devo + their classic songs before interviewing them ?
+Daniel Simon also : Fred Armisen ! darn someone beat me too it..
I believe he was being ironic with regard to the Les Paul....
Oh I am so glad you corrected Bob 1! You are more of an expert than he is in the music industry
j-a-p-a-n funny, bob1. rip, bob2.
bob1, doesn't sound like i expected. but then again he does.
Inarguably.
I love when people chew and smack their mouth when talking. Really adds to the character and depth of the conversation.
Man everyone is using those fractal amp modeling units. I bet their sales are through the roof.
Fred Armisen?
Holy shit yes.
RIP BOB 2 Bob Casale.
Holy shit I was at this show!
"spudocaster" love it when bands dont take rock too seriously 😀
R.I.P. Bob 2.
Hey if u wanna keep secrets DONT AGREE TO A "RIG R U N D O W N" lol
Wrong Bob he is still here.
Devo Rules!!
RIP Bob 2
These aren’t BM & BC are they?!🤔
Nice les paul
We are ALL Devo! Get used to it.
BOBCORE!
I miss Bob 2
Bob2 is looking like a founding father these days.
Next time, do a bit of research before you go and interview a band so you don't end up looking stupid asking what song they use a certain guitar on, when they've just told you it's named after the song...
oh how i wish i could see a mike bloomfield rig rundown...
Les Paul. Big fender amps on 11. That's it.
I kept hearing the words BOB,BOB,BOB.
Wonderful Wino Bobbacatto?
So, they won't give up their secret settings. I've got it! Maybe the FBI can force Apple to crack their codes.
Bob 1 already lives a life of danger for the FBI.
that spud guitar looks like a 'shit with strings on it'
"Les Paul?" "Japan?" Never heard of them!
That was so disrespectful, I should have done the interview, I can even play some of the devo songs, I would have freaked out at seeing the original MR DNA guitar, I bet Bob 1 would have loved my company,
Guys! It's just Devo's humour! It's all a wind up!
Notice one of the amps is tuned to the "Brown Sound." Hahaha
+Nichole Twiner well thats the van halen sound.. a standard guitar slang.
they were famous in the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and 21st century.............
Sometimes Bob sounds like Mark.
So, Bob 1 acts in Portlandia and can go on tour?? woo...
That's what I thought ha
Fred took the stage at Burgerboogaloo this past July. He rocked it on drums!
dEvO
I would have expected them to be way more nerdy about their gear.
I want a nickel for every time he smacks his lips.
They've got secrets.
bob 1 looks like a completely different person without glasses.
Mark Mothersbaugh wears the glasses.
hahahahaha "ahhh the sounds we are using are confidential...."
lol
Bob 1 Sling Blade Jr.
Did he really say the Les Paul stopped being popular after the 80's ??
