Gerry was 48 at this show and his performance is more energetic than most 25 years olds provide today. He was a driving force in their visual aesthetic on videos and it shows in live performances also.
To this day, Bob1's guitar has a large crack in it from throwing it at the end of that solo. He showed it to an interviewer many years later, described the Lollapalooza incident, and said, "It's on UA-cam." He claimed he was trying to toss it to a roadie, but as you can see from the video, he didn't look where he was throwing it, which is something he has a long history of doing after the Mr. DNA solo.
I think the specific incident was actually a different show (but also on UA-cam). I think it was this video from 1997, where Bob throws the 2x4 into the amp stack: ua-cam.com/video/CBfX52Cccvw/v-deo.html
The guitar solo at 2:38 should put to rest two things: any argument that DEVO was just a novelty act and that G&L guitars couldn't deliver with any Gibson or Fender. DEVO is immortal.
Agreed. I love those early G&L SC-2s. They have such a great chime to them. Everyone in Devo is a multi-instrumentalist. They write about human de-evolution and a lot of people don't get it. Point well made, DEVO. Point well made indeed.
My favorite Devo song. Everytime they do it, it's amazing! This band is so fucking great, everything from their noisy and repulsive garage blues rock of the early 70s, to their sublime Post-punk and New Wave of the late 70s and 80s, and even their new stuff is awesome. Duty, now, Spuds!
Yeah, maybe it's the quality of this video, but this performance of the tune seems like their best. It's crystal clear and everyone is totally in sync. I think it might be the fact that they were playing for people who aren't really fans - it gave them a chance to blow away some fresh ears with their jarring and awesome music.
Their whole set at this gig rocked! Check out "Gates of Steel" and "Blockhead" and "Whip It". I'm sure Metallica was influenced by DEVO as the guitar riff in "Enter Sandman" is similar to "Secret Agent Man".
I was at this show. The ONLY reason I attended this show was to see Devo. They are without a doubt my favorite band ever. I was hooked when my cousin played me Uncontrollable Urge back in 1980, but Lollapalooza 96 at Irvine Meadows was my first time seeing them live. I've rectified that situation since then, attending countless live Devo performances. I even rationalized flying to New York City to see them play the Are We Not Men and Freedom Of Choice albums in their entirety. This set at Lollapalooza was electrifying. The bonus was seeing the Ramones one last time, as they played their final show later that week. I fell asleep during Soundgarden and left during Metallica, but I didn't care. I got to see Devo and the Ramones.
Devo have an image, a schtick, a gimmick, etc., but don’t be fooled. These are consummate career professional Artists of the highest order. This accounts for their longevity and status.
I took my dad to see his favorite band, whom he'd never seen before, as a Father's Day gift. He thought they were done touring when one of the members passed away, which meant he would never have another chance to see them in his lifetime. Sure enough, they weren't done touring because we just saw Devo live for the fist time. Easily the best show I've ever seen, and I've seen AC/DC, Alice Cooper, Rob Zombie, Steve Miller Band and Steely Dan all live.
I know how your Dad felt, I only have seen them twice, once on 1/27/1981 in Wellington, New Zealand, the 12/18/2012, in Auckland, New Zealand. The local news paper music critic said that it was as if DEVO had an opening and closing band. DEVO played 2nd up. A band called The Church played first, then DEVO, then Simple Minds. Simply the best concert....
Had no idea what they were listening too or who Devo were/are, the 'hip to be square' gens of today just didn't get it, suburban robots that monitor reality.
Having lived through the 90s music scene, the fact that this performance is considered “meh”, should give you some insight as to how awesome all the music was 😉
Used to roll my eyes at my best buds inclusion of DEVO as one of the greatest live shows,,, saw them live, and the 1st show in early 80 put this Punk Metal dude in his place. I agree , the best unknown Rock band ever , they win.. In fact they offered their synth heavy songs on radio, ,,then BAM!, right hooked you and kicked your ass with this type of Guitar Heavy set list and just blew my perception out the door
Lol can't believe Devo actually played Lollapalooza in '96, it had to have been predominantly a grunge/alternative crowd and here are these guys who were probably best known as the super-nerdy dudes who made "Whip It"
If I had to choose only 1 of their greatest songs as the best, it would be this one. The interaction and energy expended when played live is more than any other in their shows. It's usually left near the end of their live sets for a reason...We are Devo.
Saw these guys in Detroit in 96 for the lollapalooza tour and they totally stole the show with some big names there. Still the best live show I have ever seen to date.
Mr. First Call - Josh Freese !!! [DEVO; The Vandals; touring for Sting, Replacements last couple of years, wrote Chinese Democracy title track when he was in GnR, was orig drummer for A Perfect Circle, has played with damned near everyone, it seems.]
Any guitar teachers out here? Anybody ever come in to see you, wanting to learn how to play, and when you ask what kind of music they like, they point at Bob 1's riff (and solo) on "Smart Patrol"?
This is fucking fantastic!!! Why aren't my homeboys from Akron in their back yard museum called the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame yet??? Rest In Peace Bob 2 and Alan Myers :(
Devo rocks in this one. was there, and all the bands in the backstage including the crowd were stoked to see Devo in the're old Yellow toxic suits. they rocked hard , and I didnt stop pogoing until they finished,, just awesomeness people:P

Jerry, Mark and Bob 1 are all pushing 70 now and they're still as intense on stage now as they were here. Age really is just a number to them, I guess.

That guitar solo on "Smart Patrol" still makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Bob was playing from another realm. Just stunningly powerful.

There's a better version on UA-cam. They are dressed as skate boarders. It's even better than this.
