I was in college, at record store when this, a just released album, came blazing from the sound system. Needless to say I left with the record. Brilliant.
Sometimes I think "Man, I wish autistic robots from the future would time travel back to the 20th century and try to disguise themselves as a rock band and make music I could really enjoy" and then I remember that all that has already happened.
As the story goes, a young girl depressed about her demise and family troubles, was in her room high on drugs, and contemplating suicide, when this Video came on. MARK MOTHERSBAUGH seemed to actually be speaking to her directly, as he started spitting the lyrics. She goes on to say that video completely changed her mindset as Mark, by looking almost directly at her,, which at the time was completely out of the ordinary for a video. I mean in the video all musicians were looking to the side, or looking in your direction, but not communicating to you directly. Mark seemed to know at that very moment what she was contemplating , according to her view, by letting her know in the opening of the video,, I. KNOW WHAT YOU DO. and so by the perspective of the delivery of their message, contributed to her thinking twice before ending her life. There is an interview of Mark telling the story.
I just can't understand how someone thinks this album is not great. This is peak spud performance at its peak. Laugh if you want to, and say you don't care. So put your hands on your face, and cover up your eyes. Of what's about to happen. 100 years ahead of everyone.
Wow, I haven't seen this since my college years! I remember laughing my head off at the "Ha, ha, ha, haaaa" part when I first saw this back then on MTV, because it was so clownishly funny. And what advanced video graphics for the time (1982 or so)! And it's typical of that era's blend of New Wave, Punk, Funk and Techno Rock that merged into an apocalyptically scatterbrained expression of the uncertainty of the times. Thanks for posting this!
They were nominated in 21 and 22 not 23 though. They are literally going against music heavyweights every time....might be very difficult for them to get in.
A shame whip it gets all the attention, there album greatest hits and misses has far better songs, like this, mechanical man, were through being cool, etc.
Didn't need any cids to enjoy these guys. They created their own chemical atmosphere. Saw the B-52's on acid around the same time. Bought a scalped ticket, and went right back in to see the second show. Still flying on those days!
I loved this Video.....Devo - peek a boo,Black Sabbath-Trashed, Graham Parker-local girls, Pete Townsend rough boys were my favorite video's in early 80s Mtv.

Devo's videos look exactly like their music sounds. They're geniuses.
