Looks like a fun bike and it’s good to see a review from an experienced, well informed journalist who actually knows what he’s talking about. It’s especially pleasing to hear someone comment on how the bike actually feels, rather than only list the facts and figures. Top notch camera/editing work too and Mufga’s calm authoritative style is the icing on the cake. Anyone predicting the death of proper journalism in the age of the influencer needs to watch this. Give yourselves a pay rise.

Could not agree more! The Internet is a wasteland of wanna be amateurs who babble on incessantly about inconsequential trivia. .Glad to find a big boy pants reviewer who is pleasant to listen to and gets at the essence of what the bike is about when you are riding it. Concise, measured journalism that delivers what I am looking for when considering purchasing said vehicle. So happy to have found an adult reviewer. Subscribed and awaiting your next post. Continued success. (An 80-year old rider who started out at 27 with a brand new fastback '69 Norton Commando 750 CC dream handling 428 lb rocket. The most fun bike I ever owned. Still regret selling it. Currently riding a comfortable 2003 Triumph Bonneville America with a factory big bore kit (dealer installed) and shorty tuned pipes that bark when you crank it...and pleasant rumble when you don't. Like riding a big couch that handles beautifully. I'll probably add a sidecar when my future personal balancing issues warrant it.
Of the Valencia reviews I've seen this is the most informative and well considered one so far.

Seen one in my local triumph dealer a few wks ago amazing build quality and finish.
Small is the future. Less and less places to open up big bikes. More A i to catch you speeding. I've got a quote from my local dealer for the scrambler with a couple of extra bits. Just lining up some to perches my Z900rs.
Probably the best review I’ve watched so far. I still can’t get my head round the price. Seems too good to be true. Next level quality compared to the royal enfields.
Like the Triumph Street Triple family, never watched a scathing review yet of the 400 single. Looked over the speed 400 at the Alicante dealership a couple of weeks back, first time seeing the bikes in the flesh so's to speak... was impressed by the fit and finish of these bikes...Triumph are , in my opinion on to a winner..... Spanish mountain roads, fresh tarmac, sunny weather. Stop off for Cortado and Tapas ....
Love the price and seat on the speed, but the scrambler’s colouring and styling is lovely.

I’m a big Triumph fan from the USA, specifically the Speed Triple (I’ve owned 2) and their Speed Twin. The thing that really bugs me about modern Triumph is the exclusive ride by wire fueling on all their bikes post 2016. I’ve test ridden several and I cannot stand the feeling of ride by wire.
I would give them money for a new bike if they released a model with an actual cable and speedometer.
Excellent review, these bikes seem to be brilliant additions to the Triumph lineup. Looking forward to seeing them in the US!
I’m a royal enfield classic 350 rider since 2013, learnt riding on a yamaha rx100 2 stroke, the dream was always about owning an RD 350, but they were discontinued way before, test rode a triumph speed 400, and the power to weight ratio was similar to a 2 stroke motorcycle! Checked the Indian RD 350 specs, Triumph speed 400 replicates totally! Astonishing power for a 4 stroke single, great build quality 👌🏻😍 this is a winner hands on !
Now let’s make a serious adventure/ rally bike with this motor 🤟
Well articulated and elegantly described review of these two new stunning little 400s; thank you for posting. They look to offer excellent value for money and great to see wonderful smaller capacity little bikes that are much needed both for the industry and riders’ looking to get in to motorcycling. The equipment, build quality, riding dynamics and ergonomics, for the price point, look amazing value.
If I were to buy one (which I shan’t, due to my ownership of a lovely classic 600 SRX Yamaha single), it would undoubtably be the Speed. Why? Better on tarmac riding dynamics, great ergonomics, and simply better value than the X, for my riding style.
The only visual negative for me, which somewhat detracts from the overall excellent looks, is the over-the-top Triumph logo on the petrol tank….should have offered a classic colour style for an extra £100!

Loving these new entry level bikes. Even more amazing you were riding on roads which I've done miles and miles riding push bikes during my youth. Definitely you've got to pick the right roads to enjoy the bikes to their full potential! ❤
I haven't ridden for 40 years but I'm back. I love Triumph and i love scramblers, but the 900 and the 1200 were too big for my experience. As soon as i saw this i knew it was something i am very interested in. Hopefully i can test drive next week, but they aren't here in California yet.
Take another look. Here in Texas, my dealer has a 400 Scrambler and a few Speed 400 in stock.

Good review. This is about the 5th review I've watched ... I guess the Triumphs have done a good job of attracting my attention. 🙂 As the the affordability despite the high quality appearance ... I'm pretty sure that lower labor rates account for that (I hope our Indian friends are being fairly compensated). As for the concerns about the Triumph not actually manufacturing this bike ... can't that be said of the Thailand production as well? Maybe it has tighter oversight by Triumph UK? Enough for the geopolitics ... these bikes are a great addition to the sport!
The Scrambler 400 with a set of spoked wheels & a bashplate, looks like it would make an epic small capacity flat-track bike...
I have a brand new Moto Guzzi V7 so not looking for another bike but I have to say I could be seriously tempted with one of these especially at that incredible price point.

Purchased This in India after Selling Ninza 300 due to back issues and After driven this for 400km i can say that with 176Kg it is fun to drive this machine in city traffic.
Only thing I don't like is the stamped edge on the lower part of the gas tank and the gold forks.
They just came out with a 250 MX bike so this is not the smallest 😊 I bought a 400x sight unseen.
Looks like Triumph are onto a winner with these. It was always going to come down to price and build quality, and on both fronts they’ve done very well. Stiff competition for Royal Enfield - the prestige and history of the Triumph name is probably greater and it seems like you get noticeably more for not a huge amount more. I don’t see the KTM 390 Duke as much of a competitor as the styling and aggression is aimed at a different type of rider.

I like the Speed 400 for a couple of reasons. One, I'm short legged. Two, I only ride on blacktop roads, I never go off road. I live in the states where we have divided highways with speed limits of 70 mph (in my area). I am concerned about the vibrations at highway speeds. How are the vibes at 65 tp 70 mph? I am 70 years old and most of my riding is 60 mph or less, but sometimes we ride the highways to get where we want to go.
Also, my wife has ridden with me for well over 300,000 miles. She has some serious health issues and might not be able to ride any more, but if she can I am concerned with her confirt. So, how comfortable do you think a passenger would be on the back of the Speed 400?

Why does every single review compare this bike to the KTM Duke 390, and nobody compares to the Honda CL500? The Honda CL500 is within £500 of the scrambler, looks the same style and within 8hp so basically similar performance.

Interesting - the Honda didn't even enter my mind. I guess because the 500 is a cruiser, more chilled, laid back, heavier, etc. Different feel, ergonomics, attitude, dynamics. Whereas the KTM is also made by Bajaj, and the new 390 Duke has identical bore & stroke, close on price and weight and performance etc. Thanks for the feedback though, will bear it in mind in future.
I rode a CL500 and disliked the riding position - the bar to seat position made me lean forward more than I like. The footpegs are too high up and too far back for a scrambler style bike so my legs (31") were too cramped, its also 20kg heavier than the 400X. I suspect Honda used the same peg position as the rest of their 500 twins. I know preferred riding position is subjective but last week I rode a Triumph 400X and promptly ordered one.
I am generally a fan of Hondas, but I have to agree with the negative comments on the CL500. It looks and feels like a parts-bin special. Ungainly, uncomfortable, heavy and clumsy.
By contrast, the 400 Triumphs look and feel like they have been built as they were designed, not cobbled together on a budget.

Notice any vibes esp at a steady dual-carriageway speed?
At 70mph in top the engine is smooth and well-balanced, but short gearing means it does feel busy (7000rpm). Above that you can feel some tingles.
How well does it handle with nobbie tires? Say, for off road.
The wage packet of the people putting them together, is where the savings have been made, great looking bikes
Hopefully these models will entice new riders to motorcycling, who would have otherwise missed out because they couldn't decide on anything else.
Have been looking for a medium capacity lightweight for local work and less pre ride prep than my bigger bikes, and it was the Hunter 350 that was tempting me except for one thing, it's anemic power! I mean come on, 20 bhp from a 350 in 2024, it's just not enough and by the time you've modded it with intake, exhaust, cam and power cheat ecu to reach maybe high twenties bhp, it's not such a bargain. So this Triumph looks like it's ticking all my boxes, especially the price, that's amazing😊. Just a couple of things that weren't mentioned in this otherwise excellent review, does the speed have LED lights, a center stand, a clock and a fuel guage? Answer those questions please and I will have a 😊 on my face! If it has those things I will almost certainly be pulling the pin on one.

Hi Martin nice to see you joining your FEC compatriot on the Bennetts tube. What are these like on dual carriage ways and motorways given they are small capacity singles? Similar to the royal enfield scram etc? Ta for an excellent and well considered review 😊
The motor is smooth, vibration-wise, at 70mph - mirrors clear, no nasty tingling or thumping through the bars or pegs or seat. But the gearing is short (approx 7000rpm at 70mph in top) so the engine does feel busy at speed. Thanks for watching!

@@903lew Yep, I'd guess gearing it up could help, at the usual cost of acceleration. Some quick sums suggest it might need to be quite a big difference in sprocket size to produce a substantial drop in rpm though. Be interesting to try.
@@Mufga81 Aye, 7k rpm is quite high for 70 mph. One does wonder why they’ve geared it so short.
@@903lew Nearly all small capacity bikes are geared short so that they are in their happy spot at cruising speed. I currently own a 2014 CB300f and recently sold a Kaw Versys 300. The CB was at 7000 revs at 70mph, whilst the Versys was at 7500 revs. You get used to the revs and it doesn't hurt them.
Read your written review on BS and I agree that they should have made the tach analog and the speedo digital. Also I wonder if they geared it so low for the Indian/SE Asian market where traffic is hectic, but not exactly high speed. No reason to make a torquey 40hp single with an almost useless 1st gear or stack the gears so close together... bit of a miss on Triumph's part on an otherwise awesome little motorcycle. Thanks for a thorough review Mufga!
Thanks for watching and then reading! I think normally you'd gear for top speed and then spread the other ratios out. Personally, I think these bikes would be better served with taller overall gearing - first would be more useful (and perhaps less abrupt), while sixth would feel less busy at speed. Hopefully that'll only take a new sprocket or two.
I would be interested to try the Scrambler. I recently had the 900cc but changed it for a Tiger. The Scrambler 900 was great in many aspects but had a gutless power delivery at anything past 60mph. I know the 400 is down on power, but I wonder if it delivers it better?
I rode a Scrambler 900 a few months back and know what you mean about the delivery - it's tall geared and low revving. For me, I found the 400s more enjoyable and engaging in "spirited" riding, even if they are down on outright performance.
I found it interesting that the speed 400's 40 HP and 375 lbs wet weight are very similar to the legendary 1969 Triumph T120, whereas the current t120 is 520 lbs wet and 79 HP.
I love my Duke 390 although I prefer the look of the speed 400 with a more classic look.
yes I had a 1972 T100R and it made IIRC 41hp and weighed 350 lbs, this is the closest thing (despite only one cylinder) I've found (other than buying a fully restored '72 for as much as $15,000 in the US) I have been looking for restorable Daytonas from that era and this is less money and, well, modern, and brand new with 0 miles on it. And still a Triumph. VERY close to buying one and they have one in stock at my local dealer.
I read somewhere they’ve had electrics issues with the Scrambler in India.

I think the historic comparison would have to be the Oil-in-frame T25SS and T50SS that were BSA/Triumph’s swansong in the early 70s.
I was going to bring up the 1968 TR25W Trophy, as it wasn't built by Triumph but by BSA... but there's only so much nerd one video can take.

The TR25W and T25/T50 were all badge-engineered BSAs, granted, but their engines were developments of the C15 lump, that in turn was a re-engineered Tiger Cub/Terrier unit. The oil-in-frame chassis of the T25 and T50 continued with the Meriden era Bonnevilles too… so there’s links going the other way as well.
That’s almost certainly enough nerdiness now though. 🤣🤣

Did you get a sense of the real world fuel economy the bikes might achieve here in the UK? I am expecting it to be quite economical as Triumph are going to make the big sales in Asian and Indian markets as a gateway to the brand.
Good point, didn't cover that. Officially Triumph claim over 80mpg. I didn't have a chance to test or measure this on the launch, but back at the hotel my Speed's clocks were claiming 75mpg. Hope that helps.
When referring to the motorcycles frame did you mean to say tubular or tubeless? 😅
Excuse me if I was mumbling. I think I said "tubular", but perhaps I'm evolving a Fen accent which made it come out as "toobla" and it got rolled it into the s of "steel". Apologies. I can confirm the frame is not tubeless ;)
You missed the obvious competitor for the speed 400 - the Honda CB300r. The scrambler 400x seems aimed at pinching sales from the Honda CL500 by being cheaper and lighter
I tested a CB300R several years ago. I guess it is doing a slightly similar thing, but the Honda is quite a bit down on power, and not nearly as nice to look at up close. That said, the CB is a huge amount lighter (around 25-30kg), which could be really important to some riders.
The specs look pretty damn close to those of my Fantic Caballero 500, which is a cracking little bike.
Am I the minority that thinks this medium capacity engine should be a twin, considering how much heritage is important for Triumph? Surely it wouldn't be that much expensive. Having said that, good for them for trying new markets. Let's say their American competitors are in a bit of a pickle with their stubbornness and lack of vision.
I did ask Triumph whether they considered developing a multi-cylinder 400cc platform instead. The answer was that a twin would have less character than the single. I suspect it would also have made the bike wider, affecting standover height, as well as more expensive. I would have guessed heavier too, but a Kawasaki Z400 is only 167kg, so...

I agree but it's gotta be cost. I'm pretty certain this engine is based on the 390 engine by KTM.
Heritage? The smaller bikes like the Tiger Cub were singles. A twin engine is far more expensive, try thinking about the differences.

Are the Svartpilen 401 and cl500 not comparable to the 400x? I'm not being sarcastic. I genuinely wonder if the Triumphs have "no rival" as stated. Also the Vitpilen 401 looks like a heads on rival to the Speed 400...
The Husqvarna 401s, like the KTM 390s, are a similar size, capacity, performance, weight, price etc. But I don't think they're trying to offer the same classic/retro style that the Triumphs are, that's all. Honda CL500 seems quite different to Scrambler 400X - more money, more weight, less off-road intent.
I thought Triumph's were built in Thailand so the fact these are built in India shouldn't be such a shocker!
Triumph has factories in Hinckley, Thailand and Brazil, so I agree, I don't think the 400s being built overseas is a shock. The interesting bit, for me, is that some/most are being built by a different company.
I was under the impression some of these were going to be made in Thailand and the bajaj bikes were a manufacturer take down/crate deal.
Triumph say they'll be built primarily by Bajaj in India, but also by Triumph in Thailand and Brazil. When I asked where all UK-market bikes would come from they were non-committal, implying bikes could come from either India or Thailand but all would be made to identical standards.
@@Mufga81 the take down/crate deal refers to final assembly. lots of countries tax the heck out of anything imported. if the final assembly is done domestically, they avoid massive taxes, so they ship everything in by crate to be assembled and often use domestic sources for fit and finish components (tires, seats, substitute gear, etc) to further cut costs. i guarantee you the brazil bikes will be a brazil crate version and i was under the impression the bajaj bikes would be also. the actual manufacturing is international. no matter where the final assembly takes place and where it's sold, it's possible any individual bike could have components from thailand, hinkley, or india. for example, the motor and gear box could come from country A, the frame and tank could come from country B, and the lights, electrical, tires, and seats could come from country C, and then final assembly could be performed in A, B, or C. i know triumph announced a delay in the UK and USA scrambler arrivals, because of suez disruptions, but suez disruptions wouldn't entirely explain that much of a delay of just delivering completed bikes, unless the parts supply chain to assemble them was also disrupted. all the videos i see and comments under them just write this off as a rebranded bajaj bike, but that does not appear to be the case. these are internationally sourced and assembled triumph designed and branded bikes.

I believe the Scrambler comes with a radiator guard as standard; the Speed doesn't.
There is a grille over the radiator. On the scrambler anyway.
Very nice bikes, but a shame about those awful yellow/gold fork legs. Gold anodized fork legs never look right, and these must be the worst ever.
Get them vinyl wrapped to your preferred color.
Getting them wrapped is a good idea if you don’t like them. Personally, I think they look great. It would be a boring world if we all thought the same…

My friend came back from India just before christmas and told me about these bikes which have been on sale in India a few months now. Great little bikes if you pay what they are worth ? Why in the UK are we expected to pay virtually double what they cost in India .Is my mate wrong on the price or are we in the UK being massively rippled off as usual. Import tax ? Transport from India ? As I said , great bikes but way way overpriced for what they are and resale values will be terrible just like all the Royal Enfields. But hey , it's got a Triumph sticker on it . Great review,shame about the price.

Watch the Indian reviews by Lads who have parted with real money for them and not been on a holiday to Valencia to ride them . Cheap bike , low tech not a Japanese bike and definitely not Japanese reliability. Just my opinion - ride safe. rant over
