This week I had the incredible opportunity to ride the new triumph speed 400 and scrambler 400x in the beautifully sunny Valencia, Spain. the mountain roads were an excellent place to really get to understand this motorcycle.
This bike really is good fun, whether its around town, in a city, on the motorway or out in the twisty turns. It's a really good allrounder and offers extremely good value for money. the new 400cc single cylinder engine is very impressive and feels miles ahead of the 350cc Royal Enfield alternatives.
In this review I discuss in detail the handling, performance, stopping power, suspension, comfort and more...

It's great to see manufacturers starting to take the small/mid size bike range a lot more seriously. And it's great to see reviewers review these bikes for what they are. The horsepower/top speed game has been run and done. Now it's time to see who can build the best motorcycle.
Totally agree with you!
Very well said. I purchased a blue speed 400 this past week. Absolutely incredible machine. It is my first bike, but I do love the contrast of the forks, lol. Idk why, but it is appealing to me. 🤷♂️
The black variant of this bike looks stunning...
@West2WesternGhats even in the showroom the blue stole my heart. But they did have all three. The shimmer in the black seemed like it would look gorgeous in the sun.
A couple of years ago I bought an RE 350 Classic. Riding home the heavens opened and yet after a few miles I realised I had the biggest grin going. I’m test riding the Triumph 400 tomorrow and your comment regarding the grin factor is spot on….😀
I bought this bike a month back & it's my first bike. I'm enjoying the ride very much .
Thursday I did buy one after a test drive, made my mind up in five minutes. OK it's not like my Trident 660 or the FZ1 Fazer or any of my other bikes but it drives really relaxed.
Good brakes and handling, engine dose not disturb, just doing his work and that I found it dose excellent. Has the same HP as my 650 Mash Xride and it's 7kg lighter. Ordered the blue one because here in France at Triumph Tours you can order a red one but there is no certain delivery date. They had a blue in in stock so I took that one, a black one was coming but that took again some time and blue looks good.
Awesome, enjoy 😉

Thank you very much, we are glad you have you onboard!
India and quality do not belong in the same sentence 😏😏😏 I lived in India for 12 months starting up a massive chemical facility. To put it in perspective in China same size facility would take us 6 months tops, india 12 months due to such poor construction quality….
@@colingoldthorpe5918 Construction delays were caused, perhaps, by communication bottlenecks, I suppose 😁
I just bought one of these for my wife. I’ve ridden a rocket for the last few years and I was pleasantly surprised with power and handling of the little speed 400. It’s a well built little bike that can well stand its own!
Did your wife not ride your rocket?
As someone who is beginning to get arthritis in his hands the light clutch might be a welcome feel for someone like me.
Absolutely it would be perfect
Your on board mike set up sounds top class..... really captured how good that bike sounds. Great review.
Thank you kindly!
Yup by far one of the best sound setups on youtube.
I bought a 400x and will getting it in the USA next month
Congratulations!
This owner remains
impressed with how well controlled engine vibration is. I hear a single, but I am not getting the sort of vibes I always associate with thumpers. It is uncannily refined for single!
Yes, mine has prompted me to recalibrate my thinking related to singles.
Ive ridden both back to back. At 6'1" i found the scramble bike quite a step to get into the seat. I dont have good hips anymore. That and the high ish bars didnt feel that comfortable for me. A switch to the 400 street and what a difference. Easy to get on, and handled very well. Do you really need anything bigger...probably not. And the fact not mentioned is, the 400s fall into the cheap tax bracket .
It should fare pretty well on UK roads, I ride mine in India and the roads here are much worse at some places, this bike has one of the best suspension setups to deal with bumps and undulations.
Worse than the UK! Surely not?😂
Great review as always, seen plenty of Triumph 400 reviews but you two always know how to hit the nail on the head.
Much appreciated!
Top notch review Darcy, really well presented thank you. Looks like Triumph have produced two winners with these bikes. 🙂👍
Thank you! I think they certainly have 👌🏻
Excellent review of this fantastic little Triumph 👌
My 👍 as well as comment are well deserved for your restless top quality work, Darcy 🤝
Much appreciated!
@@MrDarcy-OlManU R most welcome, mate 🤝
As a RE Fan boy I have to say the Speed 400 looks stunning & certainly looks more than £5k! Oddly I think the gold forks make it look better especially with the red&black tank! Is it better than the Hunter? Hmmm! Jury’s out!
I am more of a sport bike guy, and I totally agree with you about the gold anodized forks. I know looks are subjective, but IMO that gold color just looks out of place on most street bikes. It has just become associated with performance suspensions. While I'm on a rant, I'm over the flat paint as well. And I've got an aviator (flat) grey Ducati Monster. But I had to get that to get the red wheels. Some day I'll give it a custom paint job. Great review. Some of the super pros are fun to watch, but you represent 99% of most of us riders.
Much appreciated, and great points!
I agree with you 100%. Dark grey forks would look better. And all paint should be semi-gloss or gloss, except for the exhaust pipe which could be flat grey or flat black. I hope that at some point Triumph or a third party offer a softer seat, maybe one inch thicker. Hopefully, someday someone will offer an instrument option with twin round gauges. I am 71 years old now and most often ride in town so this 400 looks like a much better fit for me than the 900 or 1200. I have loved Triumphs since I was 16 and this newest one has re-ignited my passion.
The ugly gold forks is most likely a deliberate choice to make customers opt for the more expensive speed twin. Companies are notorious for doing this with other products as well.
It's true that tastes differ... Personally, I think the GOLD suspension gives this bike its whole look, I love that part!
I have a Hunter 350 and I would be interested in a comparison between Speed 400, Scrambler 400x and Hunter 350. Maybe you could do one in the near future. Thanks
What a beauty… hope it becomes very popular.
👍✅😎❤️
I think it will 👌🏻
Looks ideal for an older rider with dodgy knees but I prefer the styling, riding position of an Enfield Meteor or classic .
I will wait for a proper double shocks Bonneville 400, Valencia and surroundings stunning as always.
Good review Darcy, thank you. Have seen these on the roads in the south east UK already, both types. Looks like its going to be a good seller for Triumph
I think it’s going to sell very well!
Should be a perfect bike for Switzerland, where the max speed is 80 km/h except for the highways.(120)
I can definitely notice the video quality improvement. Great review!
Thank you! Used my usual camera, riding shots were done by triumphs film crew on some TV grade cameras!
Having not been riding long (I've only had my Royal Enfield Metor 350 for 8 months and my A2 Licence the same amount of time). I went to my local triumph dealer and tested the speed 400 and scrambler 400X. Needless to say, I've part exchanged my Royal Enfield and decided to go for the speed 400. I'm also 6 ft 1 , but I found the speed more comfortable and stable than the scrambler. But I think that's just down to rider preference. It was the extra power that really sold me. On the meteor, you really have to plan out your overtakes in advance, whereas the speed has a lot more pull and exudes confidence. Loved the meteor but think this bike will be mine for the forseeable.
My speed 400 would not start the first day that i got it. Got it to the shop and they i guess fixed it and now it is doing it all over again and it is back in the shop again. I made a video of what it is doing on my channel. I would turn the key to start and and got nothing, i would then turn it off and turn it back on and it would fire right up. It does this ALL THE TIME!!
Thats odd. 🤔
@@MrDarcy-OlMan If you look into it there are a lot of other people having the same problem. Triumph even made a new soft ware update because of the problem thinking that was it and would solve it just to find out that is not the problem, lol.
It thinks the kickstand is down maybe, the sensor ?
looks like a fun small project bike.
used to see the single cylider honda hawk tricked out.
lower the chassis narrow drop bars with clip mirrors sport exhaust retune the engine better air breather tear out the restriction ecu/ better fuel delivery, cool lights chop up the seat to a single.lighter smaller wheels..a wheelie machine.
Well done D’Arcy - another cracking review. Your enthusiasm shows how much the bike impressed you. I have to agree that as an entry level bike Triumph have absolutely smashed it.
Many thanks! 😊
Looks like a fun bike for commuting and a bit of weekend fun, would be a nice second bike to accompany a Bonneville.
Definitely!
All that glitters is not gold. The long term finish and residuals are yet to play out and there may be much disappoint in 2/3 years
@@the.communist I broadly agree with you. However people will be buying this thinking that they are buying a Triumph product of superior quality. The reality is they aren't. This is a Triumph in name only (TINO) So the point being is the expectation will be high thus leaving buyers disappointed in 2/3 years time when they realize they have been sold a pup.
Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought the forks looked like they were out of left field. It's definitely a part's bin part. They could have painted something else to match it, or done the seat gold something.
That's made in india , now in India big competition in 400 cc range , yesterday Husqvarna svartpilen 401 launched which is even .modern looking than this.
Stunning bike at a great price. Even if you load it up it’s only going to cost you around £6.5k… I love the look of this… in my view, currently best in class.
Nice review too. 😊
A superb review, thank you very much. I completely agree with you on the gold forks
love your channel... made me fall in love with the speedmaster and v7. I'd love to see you review the Guzzi California.
I think the ideal engine next to my Harley would be Fatbob 114 for the small roads?? Greetings from Belgium, you are doing a great job by the way!
Thanks for roughing it in the Spanish sunshine for we brits freezing at home, good to know its a bit more economical than my car, though. i would appreciate it if you could flesh outinformstion on accessories as i can see the radiator getting clogged up with mud from our bumpy country roads PDQ, i had a brief but very cold test ride recently and only saw 60mpg so was concerned about its proficiency as a commuter given Honda 500cc bikes can easily do that you made it sound fun though.
Looking forward to having a go on one of these puppies - great video as ever!
thank you very much! I’m sure you’ll love it 👌🏻
Well done. Good wffort getting out for the lauch. Channel is growing nicly. 👍
My wifes got one on order, should be here next week !!!
Awesome 😊
good to see this channel going global
My clutch hand is wrecked by arthritis so a light clutch sounds appealing.
It would be great!
Great value. When they black the engines why dont they use black bolts? forks look terrible and it needs a tail tidy but spart from that I'd consider one.
Looks a nice sensible bike... well done Triumph
You mean done Bajaj, it is a Triumph only in name.
Great video. Bike looks amazing. Great review. Cheers from Canada
I actually think this bike will do more damage to triumphs bonneville sales than RE’s. The triumph looks a great bike for the UK roads. The right price, light and economical. Well done triumph! (And just imagine if they release a spoked wheel retro version….)
Was looking forward to this. Thanks darcy..!
Dear Darcy Excellent Review you have done and Triumph 400 Speed and Triumph X are my favorite motorcycles because of their quality Design,Height and comfort while riding.i liked your video🎉
Thanks very much! The review of the scrambler will be coming soon
@@MrDarcy-OlMan I'm interested to hear your opinion on Triumph X
Also, go for the black variation . looks much better than red one
How does this fare, feel and drivability wise to Royal Enfield's Hunter 350? I will be taking my MSF very soon and one of these will be my first bike. My gut tells me the RE, being $1k less would be a better "knock around" bike to learn on and take advanced rider classes with it, rack up some miles and experience and then snag the Triumph a year later once riding has become second nature, and just own both of them. I like them both, after all. But maybe that would be a redundancy, and I should opt for plan B: go for the triumph 400 learn all the important rider skills on that over a year or two, and hopefully in that year or two Royal Enfield finally builds a classic 650 and I get that for a second bike. lol Thanks for a great run down of this beauty of a bike! Triumph and RE's are the bees knees, for sure!

Really enjoyed your video Mr Darcy .... Pressed the like button and have subscribed
Welcome aboard!
Great review Mark, it looks like you have found the perfect bike. I still haven't managed to do that after 52 years of searching.
Thank you! Not sure where you got the name Mark from though 😂
Sincere apologies, I will explain how I came up with that name. Just before watching your video, I had seen a review by Mark Pulling. In a strange way, that name stuck and I used it in my comments.
@@andrevanduren9045 I see that makes sense haha, no worries at all! Glad you enjoyed the video 😊
Is this better than my 1978 RD400 that was my first bike? That thing was crazy as f$ck. I'm jealous all the cool kids get all the good things nowadays like brakes and stuff....I bet you don't even have to take the top end off to de-coke the piston every week too.
Just ordered a caspian blue😊
Can't wait to See your 400X Review!
Its coming on Tuesday 👍🏼
Great review!
Glad you think so!
Thanks for this, most people are reviewing the Scrambler but that is too high. This one might tempt me to do my DAS.
I have reviewed both but thought I would edit this one first, I think this bike is a great reason for you to do your test and is very accessible and easy to ride. But also would be more than enough bike once you’ve gotten used to it!
@@MrDarcy-OlMan thank you
The scrambler version of this bike, is along with the RE 350 classic and Honda CB/GB 350S/RS on my tight top 3 bikes to buy list. Which one will it be, will depend on the current prices once i make the purchase. They all have something unique to offer, and the price-to-pleasure and price-to-value ratios will the be key (as prices sometimes do vary from country to country. Of course the CB/GB 350 is yet to arrive in Europe, so i'll be waiting for the reviews on that too.
I'll stick with me 350 meteor... She's does all I need. Love it ❤
I would like it in blue with the seat from the scrambler I prefer the seat hight with my limited mobility and spine issues. Normally would go for the scrambler variety but it’s harder for me to ride these days. I’d have to try both seats but I like the look of the split seat on the scrambler
Great review. As with the "BSA" l wouldn't lay out my money for a bike when l don't see it as what it's name on the tank suggests it is. I actually live 1 mile from a Triumph dealer but l've not seen one on the road, but very recently l've seen them in Cadiz, Las Palmas, Alicante, Seville & Malaga so they are certainly resonating with younger riders there. 👍
170km using 6.5L = 74mpg (I know the use was estimated). I'm also not a fan of the gold forks and have been surprised at all the reviews praising them so highly.
Nearly 60 years ago the Honda CB450 was putting out about the same horsepower/litre. And we’re raving about the power from the Triumph?
Excellent review! I would love to own one of these bikes.
Only a moment before your video popped up, i had just finished watching a review of the same bike by UserNameKate. Were you both on the same junket for this?
Cheers and happy Easter, Glyn
Thank you 😊
Yes we were both on the same launch 👍🏼
Yep , at 6 '1". I could use more info on the scrambler.... Probably can't put nobbies on the street bike... ? Can you get nobbies , for the scrambler size wheels.. ?
Review coming soon 😁
I think that Triumph have got it right with the introduction of these new 400cc models. My preference is the Scrambler, and that is just because I'm 6'2".
I’m exactly the same, the scrambler was more comfortable at 6’1”
Cool to see you looking at this, but it is not for me. If I was to get a 400cc single, I would get the new Himalayan, which has a bigger range of road types.
Can't beat the Himmy.... I rock a meteor 350... Ticks every box for my location.... Quick enough., looks great, extremely comfy over long hauls and near 500 km a tank...
*BARRY* 🎉 Enfield Fanboy
The stock exhaust sounds pretty good, love the deep tone. Seems super smart, but I'm more interested in the scrambler version. I'm thinking of a sets of wheels one with knobbies and the other with normal street rubber.)
Watch out for the scrambler version coming out on Tuesday 👍🏼
Excellent video! I was wondering if you noticed any vibrations at higher speeds, which I’ve heard from a couple of viewers.
I didn’t find it to vibrate much at all
I think with all these great reviews on the 400s, the price is only going to go one way, and that's up. Better get your orders in quick.
What’s it like in comparison to the Enfield 650 twin?, my guess is it’s better finished, handles better, brakes better and is just as quick due to its lower weight?, am I right??
I came for the same question. Thinking of moving up in HP from my Meteor 350, was thinking a 650, but this is very tempting
I think performance wise it’s pretty similar, this is of course lighter so is very comparable. I think it really comes down to style, price and whether you prefer a single or a twin
What's up with manufacturers putting the chain on the exhaust side?
The gold anodised forks stands out in the black color variant 😊
"...and a lot of them don't know how to drive." Also New York, Nevada, urban and suburban California, Mexico City, and a number of other places.
You could wrap the forks
Great review thanks , after watching your scrambler 400x and trying it definitely not for me maybe I’ll test this one out and it might get me off my speed twin . Being 75 in April something lighter maybe 😊 regards Fred
Is It possible to compare it to the Eliminator? Whould be happy your toughts about It.
Defo 👌👌surprise of the year
great review....... all best 👍
Thanks 😊
Looked at a blue one today. Nice little bike but those gold front forks are awful to look at.
I agree, on a retro style on top of it , it's out of place.
Sounds like a great (and decent-value) bike, but I suspect if you included the KTMs / Huskys, Fantics and the Japanese 400/500cc bikes in the comparison (rather than just the Enfields) you wouldn’t be calling it the fastest of all the options.
Fastest of all the options for this category of bike which is a modern classic. Those ktm, husky’s and Japanese bikes aren’t really in the same category of bike apart from engine size.
Great looking wheels fitted
Nice aren’t they 👍🏻
Sounds pretty good for a single.
Would this be a good bike for someone looking to get into occasional track days or should I get an R3 instead.
Not really a track day kind of bike tbh. The R3 is hideous so that’s a non starter from our perspective 👍🏼
I'm not even a biker, but I want one !!!!!!
I am interested in buying this bike but worried I'd be too tall. I am 6'1" (185.4 centimeters). I was curious how tall you are, the guy making the video?
I am also 6ft 1" 👍🏼
Is this bike good for a absolute beginner rider? Or should stick to buying a 125cc? .
It's ok, if you keep the revs at the lower end, it's fairly docile 👍🏼
Lots of positive comments ,always enjoy yours& Oi,Mans videos, is there a centre stand for these bikes? for chain maintenance? there seems to be no information on various videos!
Thanks very much! It doesn’t have a centre stand I’m afraid
Mufflers in the way for that too .
@@MrDarcy-OlMan 🤥🤔Thanks for reply
Ok thanks something elce to think about!
All that sunshine, litter & graffiti-free environs with plenty of perfect roads….what’s not to love? Makes Britain look depressing. Anyway, great little bike, beautifully styled (imho) and seems to have the riding dynamics to suggest the price is very reasonable. Must contact the dealer for a spin……
Nice looking bike ... prefer the scrambler but waiting to see if they sort the "Cutting out" issues ..... Rose tinted Triumph glasses off and remember it's a Bajaj ! No matter what the badge says 😉
Never had it cut out, I know it’s Bajaj but they have made 2 new factories specifically for these models and triumph have of course been very specific on quality.
I am having trouble deciding on which Triumph I want. My wife has rode with me for about 350,000 miles, but she is crippled and can no longer get on or off a bike. I hope to work with her to get her stronger so she can ride again, but I am afraid the seat on the 400 might be too small. We are not large people, just average size. But I like what I see in the 400 and it would do me just fine. However I like the exhaust note of the Speed Twin 900 a lot better, If my wife does get stronger where she can climb on and off a bike I think the 900 would be the better choice.
I just can't make up my mind, the speed 400 or the Speef Twun 900. Should I save miney and buy the 400, or should I spend twice as much and buy the 900? Please help me make up my mind. I know you know Triumphs better than I do and I will value your opinion.
Ride safely and enjoy every journey.
From what you’re saying, probably the 400. It’s still got plenty of oomph, and would be ok with a pillion. If money is no object, The 900 is better.
Question:
Can you install lowering links on these?
I’d like to be able to lower it by just an inch so I can flat foot it for extra confidence. Thank you.
Im not sure but I would assume so
Reality check. A good effort from Triumph even though it's YEARS too late I said when the RF Interceptor came out "Told you to remake something like the Daytona 500 but it fell on deaf ears at Triumph and the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 has comfortably established itself as one of the UK’s favourite full-size motorcycles since it was launched in 2018 and has remained steadfastly popular in the face of newer opposition and I don't own one.
Back to these two new bikes I have seen only one GPS check on the speed 400 result 88 MPH it needs a tooth on the front sprocket and also until I see a petrol station to petrol station check people need to stop saying it will do 80 or even 100 MPG. So yes a good if late effort but it doesn't ride over water or fly!
What is with this Triumph and BSA bringing the people singles when the staple of success with both of these traditional marques is the twin cylinder. A 500 twin would be a far greater machine for the customer and the BSA with that retro single while a 800 twin would have poised the brand to make some impressive appearances . Where it's largely a brand focused clientele stemming from good performance historically.
Instead of being a commercial for the Triumph Speed 400, how about addressing some of the issues others are writing about? For example, there’s supposed to be a stall issue. There’s an oil leak being talked about. I also want to know if you experienced anything like those? Or other problems?
No I didn’t experience any of the problems you mentioned.
@@MrDarcy-OlMan
Glad to hear that
I know they’re for different types of riding but does the old man like this one as well as the Classic 350?
Yes for sure, apart from the gold forks 👍🏼
Another terrific review mate. How do you rate this against the Harley Davidson 500x?
Thanks! Unfortunately we can’t get that Harley in this country :(
When you say 'torque assist' clutch, is that the same as a slipper clutch?
Essentially yes
I think that'd be a great bike for me
